  • I've been waiting for this moment for a VERY long time, and I can't believe I'm finally able to bring you the first BIS sampled organ!
Away from BIS, I'm the Assistant Director of Music at Romsey Abbey and I get to play this fabulous 1858 JW Walker Organ on a weekly basis. It's a glorious instrument, and I have tried my absolute hardest to capture everything about it as faithfully as possible.
Everything has been done manually, and the processing of each pipe has been kept to an absolute minimum to retain the integrity and character of each pipe.
All noises and idiosyncrasies have been left in (for example, noisy pedal pipes and variable chiffs on the Nave), and all additional noises such as stops, keyboards, ambience and blowers are present.
There is also a secret Easter Egg somewhere in the interface for you to find!
A huge and heart-felt thanks to my friend Jerry Martin who is the mastermind behind the coding part of the sampleset. Without Jerry, this sample set wouldn't exist. Thanks also to Sam Sleath for his advice at the beginning of the project.
I truly hope that you enjoy this organ.

Making money is not my primary objective. After expenses are taken into consideration, remaining revenue is invested back into BEAUTY IN SOUND. Audio and visual equipment is expensive, and I also pay a fair fee to all recitalists who appear on BIS. This is why I regularly ask YOU to help, and I’m sorry for having to do so. I hope that you can all see the tangible improvements being made to BIS along our shared journey.

Just caught up and watched this. Amazing precision here as we have grown to anticipate around anything BiS related. Well done Richard and Jerry.

Hi Richard. A very ambitious project indeed! Great that you saw fit to provide an extended version. We're all a bit spoiled with what is available on most of the big samplesets, and it's nice that we'll be able to play Romsey without feeling like we're wishing for something which is not there! Kudos to you and Jerry for what looks like a terrific job!

Brilliant work! So nice that personality of the instrument was captured (percussive barker lever slap, mechanical stop action sounds, diatonic placement of pipework clearly discernible between C and C# sides). Very charming effect overall that is clearly different than digital tone generation in a turn-key instrument. A big plus is that Romsey Abbey has access to an excellent replica should an accident like what befell Notre Dame happen. One hopes that congregations that have instruments that are historically listed capture their essence via sampling for insurance purposes, let alone to have their musicians be able to practice and register music from their own homes instead of having to commute.

Fascinating and VERY CLEAR introduction to this impressive achievement! Congratulations, Richard and Jerry. I'm glad you included the mechanical noises in the samples; they give a sense of a unique playing experience. Looking forward to hearing it in recital.

stumbled across this and am captivated. The keydesk setup itself is worth an hour's discussion. Well Done, well done! You can bet your Rohrchalter I have subscribed and my next stop is the website. Thank you so very much.

Very nice! I have been wanting a sample of an English organ. When I helped my organ teacher tune organs we also tuned the celeste stops flat. I know there are people who say they should be tuned sharp particularly with string celestes, but my teacher told me he preferred to tune them flat so they sounded a bit more mellow.

@jerrymartin79 @RichardMcveigh I am sorry I could not join in live today, but this sure looks like an amazing set! Great work! I am looking forward to playing the BiS organ myself coming week and am anxious to hear what Ms. Massey makes of that Elgar Organ Sonata, my favourite piece! I believe that is the first time the whole thing is played on BiS, is it not?
