When I am working on the PC, I put my headphone on and your music. I turn the volume down and it is really calming while I try to think. Better than medication to lower BP and stress! Thank you.
Such lovely memories. Years ago we sang evensong at Romsey Abbey as a visiting choir and my dad played the organ. Three manuals, one more than he was used to. It terrified him but no one would ever have known given his performance even though I had to mop his brow at the end. He is one of that breed of self-taught parish church organists who just do the stuff Sunday after Sunday. He and his type won't be around for long but I think people will miss them when they're gone perhaps without realising that they were ever there.
It's really a real blessing to have a church organist in the family. My grand father who is now gone was a devoted church organist and at my old age of 53 I still remember some of those wonderful hymns we used to sing together as a family choir when I was only 7.
I absolutely love it when you demonstrate the different stops! I have never seen any organist go into the amazing detail you do . . adds immeasurably to our appreciation of THE KING OF INSTRUMENTS.
What a blessing you are to us with the gift God has given to you to share with us all. The photography was extra special as well. It would be wonderful to sing in that church... Wish we had them here across the pond. I'm writing this before the voluntary. Bach's my favorite!

I love this program. Seeing the lovely place, hearing the wonderful organ so well played, the discussion which I love, and the selections. @@janemazzola4454 Good morning, Jane. I lived my first 57 years in Northern Virginia so I know exactly where you are. Not that I'm going to stalk or anything. Wondering if you know the organ at Washington Cathedral. It's been in my life more than 50 years, almost half the life of the cathedral. Whether you do, or not, I commend to you the cathedral's Annual Independence Day Organ Recital. Always wonderful, always standing room only. It's available in person (restrictions?) and on the Washington Cathedral TH-cam channel.
@@janemazzola4454 Jane, it seems that your profile mentions the, "Bible Project," and I wonder what that is. I had a major Bible project as part of my deacon's school program. If you'd like, I'm at lje1518202@gmail.com. Peace.
@@lawrenceelliott350 Dear Mr. Elliott, How thoughtful of you to respond. No, I am sure you're not a stalker, nor am I! Yes, I am familiar w/the organ & the Washington Cathedral. I have spent some wonderful moments there, of spirtual & musical refreshment, especially Evensong programs, tours w/family/friends, & several times, a guest at the charming teas held up in the bell tower. All this was before covid 19. Since then, I have frequented virtual programs + a little shopping at the gift shop (another fave stop!) I, however, am not a student of the organ, sadly so, but it has such wonderful memories from youth, choir, & church; & brings such joy to attend concerts in real time or virtual, as the wonderful programs here by Richard & Caroline & baby Hugo & sometimes graced by a kitty or two. Thank you for the info @ the Independence Day Organ Recital. I'll not attend in person, but enjoy through TH-cam. You mentioned your long association w/the Cathedral. Have you been on staff as an organist, choirister, educator, or clergy, if I may ask? Or a dedicated parisioner, who is SO important... Blessings, Jane Mazzola
@@janemazzola4454 Hi, thanks for your wonderful note. I was never on staff at the cathedral, just a frequent guest. I was never able to be a parishioner because the cathedral had no congregation then, as it does now. I suspect I've been to more than 100 organ recitals, many other musical programs (Berlioz Requiem, Duruflé Requiem, Mahler's Eighth Symphony, The Play of Daniel (Medieval)). I was at an organ program the night before and again the following morning for the consecration of the cathedral. Who ever gets to go to such things?? There was a recital one evening of the organ and a second person on an electric synthesizer. They spoke of the huge electrical storm the night before while they were rehearsing. The stopped and walked to the crossing and watched as the lightning illuminated ALL the stained glass windows. How magnificent that must have been. My parish was St. Paul's, K Street, and very well known high Anglican church. Oh, my, what they did there. Liturgy done perfectly, to the glory of God and to take worshipers to another place. Such fond memories. I even saw a ghost there. I was organist/choirmaster at St. James' Episcopal Church in Potomac, Maryland for some years and it was a very wonderful experience. More recently, I was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church and I have some thought that serving at the cathedral or St. Paul's, even once, would be more than I could stand!
Good evening здравствуйте большое спасибо очень интересный музыкальный видео рассказ мне очень понравилось всего вам самого доброго и хорошего очень интересный видео рассказ thanks very much goodbye
Memories of a visit to Romney Abbey in 1949 as a choirboy from Gosport this is a delight. Thank you for this opportunity for worship. Brockville,Ontario.
Thank you for bringing me to Romsey Abbey, what a wonderful Norman place. The oh-so-English organ and your playing remind me of my teenage and later years as a bass in our Methodist church choir. Hymns were important to us young people, and we regularly had hymn-singing sessions in someone's home after evening service. Now unable to attend church, I reckon it's the hymns I miss most. As the opening sentence of the preface to the 1933 Australian Methodist Hymnbook proudly asserted: Methodism was born in song. Thank you again Richard and Caroline, and C S Lang! And the Tuba.
Bravo Richard for a wonderful Service in such a beautiful Abbey - which yr whispered commentary showed yr considerable respect in such surroundings... hymns were great as usual & yr Anthem was really inspirational 🙏🏼thank you 🙏🏼
What a THRILL to be such an accomplished musician to play that magnificent organ in such splendid worship environment! Blessings to you Richard: you fill the "bill"! It's my blessing to watch & listen to this performance via modern technology!
So beautiful , Love Divine was plAyed at our wedding 39 years ago , 40 th anniversary 2022. We were married during our Holy Communion service Sunday 24th January 1982 , a huge congregation in Darwin Christ Church Cathedral N.T Australia
Thanks for the demonstration of the Stops & for this beautiful concert in a beautiful church. Sound id superb. More of this type of concert pls. Enjoy the rest of Fathers Day.
Thanks so much for playing my request, Richard! ("Here is Love""...a Welsh hymn set to a wonderful, 19th century American hymn tune. A very recent, but happy marriage of text and tune.)
Wonderful hauptwerk is, there is nothing like a good English church organ for congregational hymns. Loved registration. Thought you managed superbly in a ‘strange’ organ live performance esp with what appears to be a ‘straight’ pedalboard.
Good afternoon! Can I put in an early request for "Lord of the boundless curves of space" (NEH 405) please? Inspired by today's psalm, which was The heavens are telling... Will be listening with family, Clare.
Hi Clare - today's VC has already been recorded (we did it on Friday) and I'm very excited about it because it's the first VC from another location! I hope you enjoy it :)
I have really enjoyed watching this episode, especially the Bach piece at the end - very impressive. I wondered if you know the Larghetto in F# minor by S S Wesley? I can imagine the melody soloed on the choir Cremona. I also noticed that you do all of your registrations by hand, but have read that those old-fashioned looking stops are fitted to solenoids.
Regarding your shoeless feet, aren't you afraid that during a fast moving passage, you could get your big toe caught between pedal keys and dislocate it? I would have that fear.
Ah, the controversial Choir Dulcileste (DCC tuned it sharp to make an undulant/give a purpose to a not massively useful stop. This did not go down well.)
Why are you pressed for time.? Nothing's happening in there.? This is what's killing the instrument. If they want you out, what chance has 12 year billy got.?
Because I'd arranged for the Director of Music to let me out at a certain time. Plus it was his wedding anniversary so I didn't want to make him late....
Could someone provide me a track list with all the hymns and timings?
Amazing work, and done really quickly! Thank you
