I just wanted to echo the gratitude of the others here. I was stuck on this job with my 1957 tbird, but you got me moving forward again! The seal with the spring was stuck, but your screw trick got it out. Luckily in my tbird it only has the first spring seal so it doesn't have the washer and second (innermost) spring seal. Your assembly video was also very useful. Thanks a million!.
It's actually very quick and easy to take out the seals. just wipe the ram rod clean with an paper towel , put an piece of masking tape on the ram rod push the rod in until it gets stuck in the seal, pull the rod back out and the seal will come with it. You have to remove the tape every time a seal comes out but it save a-lot of time.
My rubber washers had the groove pointed towards the cylinder instead of out like yours. Mine from a 69 Mustang Fastback (Base 302). Thought you would find that slightly interesting. My plastic piece was also white like yours, and everything from my original looked exactly like yours except facing of those rubber washers.
It's always a little tricky to assume that the way it was when I disassembled it was how it was intended to be, but that was the best evidence I had. The shop manual doesn't really clarify which way they go on.
Your method of putting in a screw to pull up the rubber seals worked, but is there another way to do this? The bolt in your kit seems much wider than the original. you get alot of credit for attempting (and doing) this job. all the best!
I can't get the washer out cover the last seal. Any ideas on how to remove it? I have the area cleaned out and soaking with ATF now. The washer will move slightly but can't manage to remove it. Thanks.
@@MustangResto i managed to get it off. Removing the boot end was pretty easy. For the other end i had to turn the wheel to get it out of the way of the sway bar, and barely manage to fit a puller between the rubber on the cylinder and the arm it was attached to.
Carlos, according to my catalog, the -1A is for 1965 and 1966 model years, the -2A is for 1967 to 1970 model years. The cylinders are different in different years.

It's a seal, so it doesn't come out easily. You can try using a pick tool if you have one, I don't so I used the screw.
The manual recommends blowing them out with some compressed air, I tried it and it worked like a charm
should have used the steering pump to push out the ram

Did it. Clean the wall with 0000 steel wool, plied air, lubricated again with ATF and it fell out. Thanks!
Glad you got it out. Those are the frustrating parts of these jobs sometimes.
What rebuild kit was that? I can't find one with all 11 pieces

I don't have one. Our cylinder was in a box when we bought the car.

In NPDepot there are 2 kits, 3a541-1a and the 2a, do you know what is the difference between the 2?
