If this is your car which I assume it is. then I must say that this car is fantastic. I love the engine and the way you have made the exhaust. One could mistake them for split rear pumpers from a distance lol but wow fantastic work, inspirational.
This is exactly the kind of exhaust I want, but I want the tailpipes to point towards the back, not to the sides. Anyway this Bug sounds great, I love this chopper-type motorcycle-ish sound!
The sound comes from the cooling fan inside the housing. Many or should I say most bugs sound like that, but the sound gets unnoticed when you install loud tailpipes. If you'd see a stock Mexican bug from the late 90's with the single-tip exhaust, you'll hear that sound clearly.
@usdmarket inside the stock peashooter exhaust theres these two ice cream cone shaped sound diffusers that give you the crickety exhaust sound. the turbo sounding whistle comes from the fan shroud pushing air through the oil cooler.
Thanks for your suggestion, Cal63look. I live in Mexico and brands like Kadron, Empi and all that (I don't know if Bugpack is a brand like those) are found in very expensive prices because they're imported. Nevertheless, your suggestion is good for me because I can find the model of the exhaust on the net and ask for it with local manufacturers that use to craft legal, economic and grat quality replicas of such exhausts that Kadron, Empi, Bugpack (if applicable), etc. have made so popular.
CONTINUED If no one ever whas given you an answer is because many people take it for granted since the standard VW engine is too noisy. The EFI Mexican engine has hidraulic valve pushers that make it a whole lot quieter (zero clattering from the valve rockers) and the sound you hear is even more noticeable.
@cal63look Nice, i have one with 2 carbs, but runing at Etanol (100% etanol, not E85). The compress ratio is 11:1 as standard. I'm with a idea of get it higher to 14:1 and install my new valve command that hopfuly will make it goes at 7000 RPM. Amazing car you have.
No worries. I have never seen such a Ghia w/ Suby conversion but I do think that would be sweet indeed. I digress. 1835 is a good motor, that's the best way to build up one of those cases IMO. A suby conversion is pretty easy (wirings a bitch!) and yes, it eats tires! more vids to come!
I have the same exhaust on my 72 beetle also lol! And it sounds awesome! I personally prefer the sound over a stinger, it gives it that choppy harley kinda sound. Nice bug btw and dude the color is awesome ,it's something u dont see everyday. Keep up the good work and dont ever sell that thing! (unless u sell it to me lol)
The whistling sound is normal on any VW bug engine, at least it is for me. The whistling is not because of a turbo but because of the cooling fan. I remember when I was a kid my father had a 1985 bug (here in Mexico) and after certaing high revs, the whistling sound was pretty much the same from here.
Look up the GDown VW exhaust system, they have a web site... similar design to what's on this car (a pair of two-into-one, unequal length exhausts for each cylinder bank). They have video on their web site. Sound just like a Subaru...which also utilize unequal length tubing on their exhaust system.
Ive got this same setup on my 67 bug. Cammed 1600 cc but i took the glass packs out of the tips and it sounds mean as hell. Vids are on my channel but ive done more to it since ive posted it
thanks r33. Actually i liked more the model that cal63look said (dual zoom) because they look like the ones he has. Megadual are cool, though, but I don't like the look they have, since they look like some sort of trumpets.
@cal63look You do realize that it's not the opposed motor that gives a Subaru it's 'boxer' sound, it's the unequal length header design. Put a normal equal-length header on a Subaru and it sounds like any other four-cylinder car.
I was referring to and answering tabasco77's post on the Subaru engine for 1/2 the price noting that a type 4 engine can be built that would knock a Subaru socks off. He proposed a SUBARU 2.2, THESE engines headgaskets blow headgaskets. Are there even stock Type 4 2.2's? But thanks for not reading carefully ;) Keeps us all on our toes.
@usdmarket Exhaust Leak, Fan shroud, Fan could be lots of things. But i know when im going through gears my exhaust leak makes it sound like a turbo lol
I have a question and I would really like an honest answer on it. Is a stock beetle, with an average amount of mileage and wear and tear, reliable? Because if I'm going to spend money on one, I wouldn't want to be on the side of the road, trying to get it running again. Thank you in advance!
the left is a little higher then the right sounded good but i had a the hideaway system with a early flowmaster and boy oh boy did it sound sweet wish i would have had made a film about it but that was a long time ago anyway the left is a tad tad tad bit higher but nice.
Even with terrible audio quality, it still sounds amazing.
I like how you can see the throttle slides moving when he blips the gas!
I know this is a late reply, but the turbo sound is actually the cooling fan inside the doghouse behind the engine. I love the sound of it.
Probably the nicest looking and sounding VW ive seen.
I've found the model that you suggested me and yes, it's exactly what I want. You're so good at this, dude!
I like the pulley on the crank, It is so cool!
If this is your car which I assume it is. then I must say that this car is fantastic. I love the engine and the way you have made the exhaust. One could mistake them for split rear pumpers from a distance lol but wow fantastic work, inspirational.
I put a header on mine and then welded 2 zoom tubes like this one. It sounds and looks awesome :)
This is exactly the kind of exhaust I want, but I want the tailpipes to point towards the back, not to the sides. Anyway this Bug sounds great, I love this chopper-type motorcycle-ish sound!

That car is stunning! The engine bay looks amazing! I hope one day my beetle will look a bit like that, well when I get the dosh for it that is lol
Nice looking engine compartment, Sounds nice with the dual carbs..
love the exhaust! kinda looks like a TVR
Sounds great and looks beautiful!
well thats a 4 cyl boxer too. they are fun to pull appart and put back together
Had the same exhaust on my '74.. Nice choice.. Don't see many VDubs with that exhaust system in place..
nice exhaust. sounds good
A thing of beauty!
its the cooling fan. its tied to the timing belt. when you rev it, the fan spins faster.. thats what the sound is

Amazing car you have.
@usdmarket The blades in the pulleys make the whistling sound, its like the turbo compressor but obviously doesnt compress the air
Looks awesome!
I have this same exhaust sounds like a hot rod exhaust system. It's loud as hell to.
No worries.
I have never seen such a Ghia w/ Suby conversion but I do think that would be sweet indeed.

A suby conversion is pretty easy (wirings a bitch!) and yes, it eats tires! more vids to come!
thats a nice engine man!
Wheres the best place to start for getting more power out of a 1300 beetle engine?
Sounds like a beast!
I'm so stealing that exhaust idea!
Awesome ride! Good job!

I also like the piant color you chose
Suena muy bonito el vochito🙋♂️
@usdmarket I think its the fan that cools the engine mate
What type of exhaust is that? I love the sound, do you know if they have anything similar sounding for the Karmann Ghia?
Thanks
@usdmarket it could also be the air filters sucking in the air too.
Look up the GDown VW exhaust system, they have a web site... similar design to what's on this car (a pair of two-into-one, unequal length exhausts for each cylinder bank). They have video on their web site. Sound just like a Subaru...which also utilize unequal length tubing on their exhaust system.
nice work, it sounds greate!!!
Nice exhaust and kadrons
@usdmarket Not sure but im guessing it could be the cam gears.
awesome. where did you get the green pulley and fan cover?
How much power you reckon your getting? That sounds great man.
JC Whitney carries that exhaust.
that sound is so amazingly good :p:p
That exhaust is bad ass, i looked on thesamba and they aren't that expensive :)
yeah real unique, i bet you dont see a lot of these about any more, can iask you how much youve put in to it if thats not a rude question?
@usdmarket I think it's just what boxers sound like. Some (non-turbo) Subarus and Porsches make that sound.
Esse som é música para os ouvidos !!
I belive the exhaust is called Thunderbird SP Crossover (Google it)
vwheritage sells them!
sounds like a subaru boxer engine! nice work, awsome bug!
for a min i though your exhaust was your rear bumper aha nice set up
Ive got this same setup on my 67 bug. Cammed 1600 cc but i took the glass packs out of the tips and it sounds mean as hell. Vids are on my channel but ive done more to it since ive posted it

@usdmarket The motor is air cooled. its the fan.
how do you like the dual carb, im thinking about getting them
Outstanding!
@cal63look You do realize that it's not the opposed motor that gives a Subaru it's 'boxer' sound, it's the unequal length header design. Put a normal equal-length header on a Subaru and it sounds like any other four-cylinder car.
Kadrons are carburetters and pretty sure they make exhausts aswell
sounds and looks great :D

Keeps us all on our toes.
God that does sound good
LOL I love it - sounds like a go-kart :)
cool custom pipes
very nice,good work
gorgeous
Where did you get that exhaust. I love those but I have never seen them anywhere.
@usdmarket Exhaust Leak, Fan shroud, Fan could be lots of things.
But i know when im going through gears my exhaust leak makes it sound like a turbo lol

Because if I'm going to spend money on one, I wouldn't want to be on the side of the road, trying to get it running again.
Thank you in advance!
No, its because of their engine design. Flat four, apposed cylinder design. The pistons move from west to east instead of north to south.
I like the exhausts where can i get that?
the green part of the engine looks like if it were made for a gerbil spin in to power the engine.
sounds delicious
with an engine like that deck lid optional=D very nice beetle
Das ist echt toll...
Where are you guys located? look like the bug is in awsome conditions
Get a stinger, doesn't stick out to the side, but to the back :D
@petrol4d i think its your intake i have a short intake on my car and it was that same sound when i get on the gas
model ? Nice sound and car :-)
im about to put this exhaust on my super beetle:)
u musted been exhausted building that
NICE!
Which exhaust brand/model is that?
@usdmarket its the air cleaner sucking in air
do you all live in ceres or modesto C.A or did at one time? off of centrel ave?
@karlmallia DYNO-TUNED DUAL-HEADER EXHAUST, that's the name on Jc Whitney
mesinnya Rapih :)
the left is a little higher then the right sounded good but i had a the hideaway system with a early flowmaster and boy oh boy did it sound sweet wish i would have had made a film about it but that was a long time ago anyway the left is a tad tad tad bit higher but nice.
It's the cooling fan.
he likes acelerating
i got a 1º966 vw with a 1600 engine but it doesnt sound as good as this one, i need some help so mine could sound as cool as yours, thank you.
@cal63look
Yep VW is the original with the boxer engine not the subaru. The subaru is the copy.
what sounds better?.....
I think it's the cooling fan for the engine....... Mine used to have that sound too.......
But this engine is not the regular 1600 vw is it? It looks like the porshe version..
do you have a serpentine belt on here? those make a little whine when new.
Awesomeeeeeeeeee
@cal63look are there straight cut gears on there?
nice
