Trump looks at Nato membership like a membership dues to Mar a Lago golf club. That money is a PLEDGE on a percentage of a country's GDP that is allocated to defense spending, 2%. It isn't mandatory. What the US has over there in Nato countries isn't costing anymore than what it would cost if the US forces were in the US. The land the bases are on is provided by the host county, rent-free. The troops get paid wherever they are. The equipment has to be maintained wherever it is. The training costs are the same wherever they take place. The "riding" on the coattails is pure BS. The US troops being there act as a deterrence to Russia. He can't force a country to spend more of their money (budget) on defense. It is after all their money.

I find this view to be short sighted. Firstly, Trump agrees with Putin that the EU needs to be minimised/ neutralised. Both of them want this to happen at any cost to the peoples of Europe. I agree. Agreements to help defend what is left of Ukraine won't be worth the paper they are written on if previous agreements are anything to go by. Few in Eastern Europe will feel reassured, and Russian interference in the political narrative of Europe will continue. The price in Russia is being paid by the average person and until they, or the Oligarchs, have had enough of Putin's regime this imperialist expansion will continue, in Europe, in Africa and in the Middle East. Russia is on the verge of losing this war. They are running out of the equipment to wage war. Within a year or two, their ability to wage war will be exhausted, and their economy will be in shreds. If we want to end this quickly, we should supply the Ukrainians with the equipment they need in the quantities they need and stop putting restrictions on how they should use it. Do that and Russia will cease to be a problem for several generations.

What you are forgetting from the equation of Ukraine seceding territory are the vast natural resources in those areas. Also, while Ukraine might not be able to liberate the occupied territories militarily, Russia might collapse internally due to economic and other problems, and Putin himself surely is not going to live forever. They might lose their interest in Ukraine if more acute, domestic problems surface and their mastermind himself dies.
It would be awesome if the EU would have it's own weapons industry and stop buying 16% of American manufactured weapons. If everything is transactional then why still buying US-bonds. if you watched Ben Hodges videos and opinion, there is no point in wining if international law is left broken and a precedent is created. It is important to send the message that might does not make it right. Of course once the territory returned, hostages liberated, reparations paid, investments in Ukraine can take place, integration in EU and Nato will make ireversable the whole. One of the first points on the schedule is secure the border of course.

Trump looks at Nato membership like a membership dues to Mar a Lago golf club. That money is a PLEDGE on a percentage of a country's GDP that is allocated to defense spending, 2%. It isn't mandatory. What the US has over there in Nato countries isn't costing anymore than what it would cost if the US forces were in the US.
The land the bases are on is provided by the host county, rent-free. The troops get paid wherever they are. The equipment has to be maintained wherever it is. The training costs are the same wherever they take place.
The "riding" on the coattails is pure BS. The US troops being there act as a deterrence to Russia. He can't force a country to spend more of their money (budget) on defense. It is after all their money.

I find this view to be short sighted. Firstly, Trump agrees with Putin that the EU needs to be minimised/ neutralised. Both of them want this to happen at any cost to the peoples of Europe. Secondly, any failure to help Ukraine to "win" plays straight into Putins gradualist ratchetting takeover of the whole former USSR. It isn't a question of Russia "not winning". It's a question of Ukraine not losing. And Ukraine will never stop retaking Crimea, whatever the interviewee feels is "one of those things that happen".
Absolutely. What seems to be lacking in all these 'views' is what the Ukrainians want to happen with their country. It's up to them what they will accept- not us, not NATO and not the USA. They will not, ever, cede territory to Russia, even if they have to fight with sticks.
The sensible view now is for Russia to be granted the land it feels to be rightfully its own, and for the slightly smaller Ukraine to obtain the democratic freedom it apparently wants.

What you are forgetting from the equation of Ukraine seceding territory are the vast natural resources in those areas. Also, while Ukraine might not be able to liberate the occupied territories militarily, Russia might collapse internally due to economic and other problems, and Putin himself surely is not going to live forever. They might lose their interest in Ukraine if more acute, domestic problems surface and their mastermind himself dies.
