Hey, I was on that ship....for a grand total of about 45 seconds. Back in the summer of 1986, when it was still home-ported in Norfolk, I was on vacation in Virginia Beach with a good friend and his family. His older brother was an Air Force doctor, and was able to get us on to the Norfolk Naval base. We parked over by the piers, and the Nimitz was moored on a pier with the USS Iowa, which was still in commission at the time. We walked up the gangplank on to one of the big aircraft elevators of the Nimitz and were almost immediately told we'd have to get off because they couldn't give tours that day. But the sailor suggested we try the Iowa, so we did and were able to get a great tour of that battleship. But for a very brief period of time, I stood on the hangar deck elevator of the USS Nimitz.
Omg i can't imagine the planet Earth without United States of America we are blessed having this country with these Heroes who protect our homeland and protect the whole world thank you for your service everyone and God bless and the United States of America
All I have to say is I am so proud of the men and women that does this day and night on those aircraft carrier God bless the USS Nimitz fantastic everyone that's doing their job I'm such a proud US citizen just to watch you guys unbelievable and the training that you have and receive
Thanks for the video! I was on the Nimitz from 77-81 on operation eagle claw sent to rescue the american hostages from Iran. And injured along with 32 others when an aircraft crashed on deck. We lost 4 men that night I salute those men who died for our freedom so we can sleep in peace. President changed the drug usage policy because of the incident.
I love watching US carrier flight operations . It never gets old . Another awesome video . Thanx mang . It will not be long before we see the F-35C flying off the flight decks and trapping .
Served onboard USS JFK CV-67, 1975-78.. Worked on the flight deck often.. C&E (catapult & elevator) electrical shop .. The flight deck was an exciting place to work!
Having grown up watching "The Final Countdown" starring the Nimitz in the early 80's, it feels strange not seeing Tomcats on her deck. Still great to see her going strong all these decades later though.
I remember a flight I had at night, it was uneventful until a severe storm rolled in, it was the worst. I didn't think I'd make it back alive. It took all the skills I had, couldn't talk to anyone, all I had was static, voices breaking up. I could barely see the deck, but I got back on, it was rough. Strange, it looked like first light, I looked at the sailors around me, not talking, just staring, somethings wrong, this isn't my ship, it's an old WW2 flat top all old and dirty, I got out of there fast on full burners, all of a sudden, it's night again and I land, plane's wrecked, it's calm and I exited my stricken craft, I still don't know what happened. They said they thought I had crashed, I disappeared from radar and was missing for 3 days and they were ready to give up the search. Thing is, that after this, they wouldn't let me fly anymore. What's their problem?
Missing the EA-6B Prowler greatly... Also the steam from the catas is amazing they should keep it as a special effect on the new carriers! Only thing I don't understand is why are they using the barriers which lift like that - 5:21
Go to 7:27... Imagine being behind a jet in afterburners and getting blasted and roasted or having a tiny pebble hit you at that velocity! The Jet Blast Deflectors are exactly that... deflectors. They are water cooled with seawater and are lifted each time to protect the people and equipment/planes behind it. It still gets mighty hot back there but it isn't a blast furnace to the face.
That is the CAG Bird. Usually, each squadron will have one. They are usually flown by the squadron commanding officer and will carry the number 00 or 01. I happened to be lucky enough to see a CAG Bird on display (F-35B Squadron) and its number was 01.
bitethedevil CAG birds for airgroup commander not the squadron co (co xo names grace ac #01- typically) Air group and the aircraft carrier are two seperate command entities managed seperately. There are several other high ranking officers who work for the CAG. Wether its CAG actual or his cronies CAG is used to refer to them all Each squadron maintains ac # 00 also known as Nuts as the CAG bird. CAG bird trys to incorporate the old squadron colors from back when the Navy flew white ac. CAG is offered to take Nuts flying when CAG flys as a guest of the squadron. We were just a few years into tactical gray and no colors. Late 80s we started sneaking a little color onto Nuts. The CAGs had flown white airplanes untill tac gray. They liked the color. The idea caught on in other squadrons like wildfire. I think the trend started about 1989. It was just a little at first. Now its just crazy. I believe VA72 Desert Storm CAG bird (google its the a7 wearing desert camo) is the first Naval aircraft to have a total CAG paintjob . The Navy needs to go back to white airplanes with bright colors imo.
USS KITTY HAWK CV 63 1979 to 1981 (too) V1 Division ABHAN :) Ele ops, Flight deck control, crash and salvage, tractors.... and yes ABH also stood for Aviation Broom Handler.
haha "fat plane"! The pilots of that plane would rip their mustaches off if they heard you say that. Actually, BC, that is an EA6B Prowler (electronics/jamming/radar/etc) that goes out and F's up everything electronic that the opposition owns including their walkman cassette players! It is replaced by the Growler, which is an F-18 Hornet packed full of nasty electronics! FYI, the planes that launched before and after the fat plane are FA18 Super Hornets. Eagles is an Air Force reference to their venerable F-15 fighter. The Navy does not have those.
Why are there already planes on the carrier at the beginning? I thought its Air Wing didn't join the ship until it was out at sea and they leave before it returns to port.
That's a very important aircraft. They are always up grading that aircraft. China and Russia always watching and Studying our way of operation. A-6 is always go I g in first ahead of the bombers. so they must keep changing the signature. Star war games.

Not to sound stupid but why @ the 5:00 mark, was that plane colorful?
