    I remember being shown this in seminary when I was in high school. I occasionally come back to watch it and it regularly fills my eyes with tears. I'm so grateful for Jesus Christ and his Atonement for us.

    I think I read in one of the comments that asked: "So you mean you have to repay Jesus Christ now?" NO. You can NEVER repay Jesus Christ no matter what you do. But now, Jesus sets the terms and conditions like faith, repentance, etc.

      Exactly. My parents basically paid for my first year of college out of pocket and from my dad's hard earned GI Bill. They have never asked me for any of that money back because their intentions wasn't to get their money back, but for me to grow and prepare myself to be a good man, have a steady foundation in life, and set myself up for the future.

    Rick Macy. The creditor who handed the quill pen was my High School drama teacher. What a great man! I'm so glad to have met him and see him in Church videos.

    "What I shall say I could say much better if we were alone, just the two of us. It would be easier also if we had come to know one another, and had that kind of trust which makes it possible to talk of serious, even sacred things. If we were that close, because of the nature of what I shall say, I would study you carefully as I spoke. If there should be the slightest disinterest or distraction, the subject would quickly be changed to more ordinary things." I've always loved this intro to the parable.

    So God is the collector. He wants a full payment so that justice will be served.
    Children of God are all sinners, therefore
    God requires a mediator and that is Jesus Christ.
    Jesus Christ had to suffer, bleed and die so that justice will be served.

    So, the debtor just took on a 2nd creditor. Nothing changed. He is still in debt, the 2nd creditor still requires justice eventually.

      Nope. In LDS theology Jesus is a helper and the LDS church is not the true church. The true church is those who have trusted alone in the finished work of Christ. The thing is we just don’t always know who those people are.

    I never liked this analogy. Guy wants a farm, gets lured into a predatory loan scheme, can't pay so creditor seizes his farm. The Lord pays the debt (to whom? Is God the loan shark, or does Jesus buy off Satan?) The concept of religious debt was explored by David Graeber in "Debt: a 5,000 year history." The Lord's atonement doesn't work this way, and most of history concerns predatory loan practices that trapped people in debt peonage. To present the atonement in a depiction that belittles the farmer and validates the loan shark...geesh

    • @spencer8530
      @spencer8530 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @DaveCannon Thank you for posting your comment it really got be thinking. Here are some of my thoughts about this that help me understand this analogy more.
      I think if you look at the analogy in that way it does seem confusing and Aaso your questions regarding who Christ is paying off is also a great question. I think the answer to that question helps me better understand the analogy. Christ isn't paying off anyone he Is "paying off" justice. With each choice we make certain consequences follow, so for example if we partake of drugs we run the risk of becoming addicted. Justice is the force that requires those consequences to happen. Christ suffered and felt every single thing, so that he could step in. He is the mediator the one who allows us to be forgiven. So instead of thinking of it has a predatory loan think about it has the choices we make wether good or bad. I also don't think it is referring to Christ has a loan shark. If it was to show him has a loan shark he would have said I will pay off your dept but now your loan is 10 percent more in interest. Instead it shows him satisfying the laws of justice and providing a way for us to come back and live with our heavenly father again. The other important thing to realize is that we choose to come this earth. We knew that we would need a mediator. We also knew it was the way for us to grow. If you never let your kids out of the house they will never be able to experience being on there own and making decisions on there own. However with that we know that will make mistakes and so did out heavenly father. Sorry this is so long and hopefully this was worded in way that made sense.

      It is an imperfect metaphor, to be sure, but it resonates with me deeply. It's something we can all understand. It's easy to place ourselves in the shoes of the young man and imagine the fear and hopelessness followed by the deep sense of gratitude toward your redeemer. In this video, the 'loan shark' is not Satan. The 'loan shark' is simply justice personfied. The creditor represents the unfeeling and unflinching demands of the laws of God. They must be satisfied for without justice, God would cease to be God. I very much enjoy this metaphor, even if it isn't perfect. (But, by definition no metaphor is...)

  • @gfree4244

    Romans 4:4,5. If you are trying to pay back the creditor (Jesus) you will never be able to pay it back, your not trusting in Jesus who is the Savior, not the helper; after all he is the one who proclaimed while hanging on the cross “it is finished”, meaning paid in full!

    • @annabuttimore6819
      @annabuttimore6819 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think you've misunderstood the video. Jesus isn't the creditor. Jesus is the one who pays the debt in full to free the debtor.

    • @gfree4244
      @gfree4244 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Anna, the point of the video is after Jesus pays the debt, the debtor, that is us, isn’t free anymore, Jesus changes the terms of the debt and places us back in bondage, thus becoming the creditor once again. The true gospel sets us free; that is why Jesus says “paid in full” while hanging on the cross.

    This video is blasphemy. At 8:02 the Jesus figure says he will pay the debt IF the debtor accepts Jesus as the NEW CREDITOR (Jesus then says the debt will be paid back to HIM, and it will NOT be easy, but possible). Jesus Christ died for the sins of the world (John 1:29). There was NEVER a deal made that people had to pay JESUS BACK. The Gospel is NOT what is shown in this film, it is is 1 Corinthians 15:1-4.

      It is EXCRUCIATINGLY erroneous to believe that our sins nor any of them will be forgiven if we keep doing them. Plus eternity never ends so paying the debt back really has to be a inevitable part of our eternal growth and preparing for our eternal roll

      @@lux-creteranch1122 7:52 "You will pay the debt to me, and I will set the terms." And the debtor wasn't unable, just careless and foolish. This is a parable, after all; you might just have the wrong interpretation. In this case, his debt was voluntary and probably not identifiable with life.
