    Thanks for uploading. I'm not a member of the LDS but my understanding of David Whitmer's position was that he did indeed remain true to his assertion that he witnessed the plates and the angel. However he left the church because he disagreed with the development of Joseph Smith's doctrine such as that of the plurality of gods and polygamy. Whitmer said that these doctrines were completely inconsistent with the original book of Mormon of 1830 and that he remained a believer in the doctrine of one triune God the Father Son and Holy Ghost. In short he regarded Joseph Smith as a fallen prophet.

      A few verses had to be changed in the book of Mormon from 1830 to the 1837 edition. One example is in first Nephi chapter 11, and the another in first Nephi chapter 13. They both referred to God & Jesus as one being, or Mary being the mother of God, the eternal father, obviously these things need to be corrected in order to align with the final version of the first vision released in 1838 and eventually published in 1842.

Dad checking these out of the ward library to watch at home for Family Home Evening. Three incredible men who were witnesses to one of the greatest miracles of our time. The coming forth of the Book of Mormon. Another Testament of Jesus Christ. Then there were 8 more witnesses of the Golden Plates.

We all laughed because his eyes, brow, sharp square jaw were quite different from his joyful playful mood. Brother Chamberlain told us about a movie he was in, the title, and what the movie was about. The three witnesses. He bore his testimony of the divinity of the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith. Now after 40 years Brother Chamberlain's testimony rings true again. I love the testimony of the three witnesses & the testimony of the twelve men who saw, hefted, the gold plates. Its truth.

    Was the scene in the courthouse when Oliver Cowdery as prosecutor was challenged as to his own character authentic or from the scriptwriters' imagination? It certainly seems irrelevant to the trial taking place. Nice piece of drama, though.
    More importantly, from historical accounts Martin Harris seems to have been already given to supernatural experiences, but it is impossible, I think, to tell whether David W, Oliver Cowdery and Joseph Smith were fraudsters, deluded or (which I doubt) witnesses to a supernatural event. A lawyer character in the film, remarking on there being not one but three witnesses, then says one witness in a court of law is enough, but what he didn't add that the credibility of witnesses counts for a lot. Three witnesses whom the jury didn't believe and the case would be lost.

      @ce collie Bullshit. You are a classic victim of gasslighting. Every church document up to the 90s, at least, has pictured Joe intently staring at the plates.

    Why don't you tell the rest of the Oliver Cowdery story? Tell how he was excommunicated for speaking out against Joseph's affair with a teenage girl named Fanny Alger. Funny, 'official' Mormon history never mentions that, does it?

    • @wiremuwiniata1216
      @wiremuwiniata1216 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Perhaps you would like to read the book "Saints". It is mentioned there in detail. Joseph Smith did marry Fanny Alger as a second wife by commandment of the Lord (and I might point out that it was not unusual at the time for teenage girls to marry). This was a commandment Joseph obeyed very reluctantly as he loved Emma Smith with all he had. It is true that the doctrine of plural marriage was introduced to the saints and that many if not all struggled with the doctrine at first. And yes many like Oliver Cowdrey could not understand or accept it and eventually left the church. But this was not the first time God had commanded a man to take another wife. Even the great Patriarchs like Abraham and Jacob were commanded or allowed to have more than one wife yet they remain uncomdemned. Joseph Smith had asked the Lord about the Patriarchs and their wives and that was when the Lord began commanding him to follow their example. Plural marriage is not a principal all need to follow, only those that have been commanded by the Lord for a specific purpose.

    • @havegottogitgud1864
      @havegottogitgud1864 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Nah, that's not the reason Oliver was excommunicated. The actual reason why he, David Whitmer and a few others from the church leadership in Missouri were disfellowshipped was that they mishandled church funds and used them to buy consecrated properties in Far West.
      Oliver Cowdery then moved to Tiffin, Ohio and was pressured by his peers of the Lawyers' Guild to repudiate his "Mormon past." Especially true when he run for State Representative for Ohio, election that he lost by 40 votes.
      He ultimately didn't repudiate it, and ended up rejoining and being rebaptized in the church and passed in good standing.
      As for the accusation about Fanny Alger, Joseph never denied the claim, but insisted it was not adulterous.

      It's almost laughable that your bring up Fanny Alger. It shows you haven't done much research, or understand the rules of hearsay. The documentary record of the relationship between Joseph Smith and Alger is fragmentary and contradictory. And, when one studies Joseph's letters (ones he actually wrote) and those of Emma Smith (his wife), there's absolutely no indication of extramarrital activies and completely uncharacteristic of his adult life.
      Joseph Smith, Jr. was "sealed" to many women, but there is absolutely no record or accounts of his ever having consumated any of those relationships.
