      +RubyOpheliaQuinn these seriously are the best. I just read a talk by one of our church leaders that basically said "You're doing better than you think." I have 4 young kids and sometimes at the end of the day when the kids are crying, the house is a mess and I am just tired, I feel discouraged. But then I remember...we are doing more good than we think. Anyway if you like these videos, and you want to know more about what our church teaches about families you can go to mormon.org/chat to ask any questions you may have. Just thought I would throw it out there! :) God bless!

    When I saw this video, I was touched to see how much this person was willing to give to others. I also felt saddened to watch this person give up over and over on her own needs. I would like to tell this person that her needs matter too, just as much as all the people she served that day. There were times she could have asked the people she was serving for the support she wanted. I'm sure they would have been glad to help. Please never give in or give up on yourself, you matter too. The friends she served would probably have felt hurt to find out how her day turned out and have wanted for her to be considered too. It's okay for your needs to matter too. It's okay to ask for the help you need. If you know someone who behaves this way regularly, please give them a hug.

    I have felt like this so many times, in my past, especially raising 5 children alone in the Gospel (my dear husband is not a member). I learned the vital importance of saying something like "I am sorry, but that won't work for me right now." or "I am sorry but I can't today." And I don't sign up for everything!! I sorted out once that I was putting my name on that sign up sheet so that I didn't look "bad". Your health is important. You DO have to put your "oxygen mask" on first so you have enough "oxygen" to help others. AND, be prayerful about when you say YES I can do that... we cannot do it all, and Heavenly Father does not expect us to "walk faster". He just expects us to walk. :) ♥

      @@AMBERLARIOS-qz2lq My mom died about 8 months after returning from my mission. I was so angry at God. When she was in the hospital we prayed and fasted for her to be healed. We gave her blessings. I prayed, "there are so many rotten people in the world, if you have to take someone, take one of them! I served a MISSION for you and you're letting this happen?!" Watching her get worse and worse, then finally die was not something I'd wish for anyone. The Spirit whispered that it was her time and gave me comfort. I know God loves us and in eternity He will make up for all the suffering and crap we go through in this life. I pray you can find peace and comfort in the atonement of Jesus Christ if you haven't already. God bless you!

    What I love about this video: President Hinckley's quote. The realistic messy house. The mom who is having a tough day. The cameo by Al Fox Carraway.
    What concerns me about this video: My first impression was that the video portrayed an already overwhelmed mother who over-committed to others and neglected her own needs. She encouraged similar behavior in her sister when she asked "who would help them if you left?"
    I believe in serving in the kingdom -- I'm currently the compassionate service coordinator in my ward and have been so touched by the responses when service is needed. I also believe that you need to put on your own oxygen mask first.
    I love the idea that sometimes our day doesn't go as planned, and sometimes we disappoint people, and sometimes we don't complete our checklist. But I believe that this concept could have been presented in a healthier way.

    One thing that really stuck out to me is when the kid was praying at the end and said, "Thank thee that we could get all the things done that you needed us to do today."
    There was one word in there that changes the whole meaning for me.
    "Thank thee that we could get all the things done that *you* needed us to do today."
    I think sometimes we beat ourselves up because we didn't cross off everything on our to-do list, when in reality God has a different list, full of opportunities to do good and help people. Doing good is not about how many errands you can stuff into a day. It's about taking the opportunity to do what God needs you to do.
    Christ went about helping people, not doing His own work or serving His own will, but His Father's work and His Father's will. And if Christ is the author of everything that is good, if all good things come from Christ, then to do good means almost by definition to do as Christ did. To not run your own errands, but to "get all the things done that God needs us to do today."

    Cried for minutes after watching this even though I'm a man. It was a much needed catharsis. I feel intensely the pain of sacrifice that is so often required in the raising of children (4 here) and the giving of service to others. Often and without even thinking about it, I repress the feelings and pain in order to provide support and relief to my wife. Just feeling these emotions and letting the tears come has increased my strength and I feel enabled to willingly go and do the dishes and sweeping and lunch making so that my four young children and wife will have a good start to their day tomorrow.

    Thanks, I have seen this video before but it really hit home and helped me tonight. People don't always value the little things that pile up on us, that we do to keep things moving, and sometimes what we think we should be doing gets completely pushed aside. We just need to pray for strength that the things we manage to do are the ones the Lord wants us to achieve and trust that he is guiding us in our hearts.

But the best way to deal with this is to appreciate what you accomplished that day, count your blessings and move on! These Mormon messages are made with a lot of thought. Many people have been talking about the negatives in these different videos. Yes they may not all be perfect in every detail. But the truth is many people out there watch these and receive inspiration and it uplifts them. We can find negativity in ANYTHING. How about stop criticizing and see what you can apply to your own life. This has been hard for me because I used to criticize more, Now I am really trying to be a disciple of christ and sure things can seem silly or I may not fully agree but I see what I can apply to myself to help me become better. Please think about that.

    I am a single mother right now. I am battling to get back to church because it conflicts with one of my jobs. My husband was deported to Mexico because of an expired visa and down in Mexico he self medicated himself with adventure and then cleaned up and got baptized. However one day he told me that he did not love me the same anymore. And that was when I just knew in my heart there was someone else for him. We have a four year old boy who is adhd and I struggle everyday with college, keeping him calm, and here recently with my faith. I feel like things are never going to get better, although I know one day they will. I am exactly like this woman in the video. I never say no to nobody and I always aim to make people happy. I realize now that even something as simple as prayer can begin to give me hope for a better change in mine and my sons life

    I thought this was a beautiful message.
    To those criticizing the video: I believe the point was to show that living a giving life through service can sometimes be hard and that it is not always immediately apparent the amazing difference small acts can have on others lives (hence the title "You Never Know.") I think anyone criticizing this video should watch again, trying not to judge the mother because you do not agree with her antics or her parenting, or wonder where the father is/if there is a father. Imagine, instead, that you are the mother who needed your friend to babysit while you went to the doctor- where you are going to hear the results of your recent biopsy. Or the family who just birthed a little one, who has been clinging to life for the past 6 weeks, and you have finally been able to bring your precious one home. How grateful would you be to the woman in this video for lightening your load, if only for a moment?

    • @AshleyRomney
      @AshleyRomney 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I'm SO glad you wrote this! Well said. I'm having a hard time understanding why there is so much criticism What would life look like if we all judged and criticized a little bit less and served just a little bit more!

    • @hagamapama
      @hagamapama 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Ashley Frederickson The criticism is based on a perception that the mother overburdening herself the wahy she is here, is somehow a good thing. It isn't, and that's not the point of the video to say it is. She's making a mistake by committing to do too much. But the lord still accepts her sacriofice and she's doing some good too -- before the inevitable mommy meltdown sometime in the next 4-5 years if she doesn't learn to find time to chill.

    Love what I believe the intended message was, however, not being kind to ourselves will have an impact on our ability to serve. We need to be able to create better balance, accept service and even set boundaries that may result in sometimes saying I can't do that. Alternate endings: 1. If this is a single mom, her VT arrives to babysit on time, finishes the dinner and takes it to the family while the mom meets her cousin. 2. If married, dad adjusted his schedule weeks ago and is home to actively preside. He finishes dinner and takes it to the family while mom meets her cousin. In family prayers gratitude is expressed for mom, even though she is not there.

    This is a good reminder! It’s true it’s always great to lend a hand, big or small because obviously it blesses others. But it’s important to draw the line if you will struggle hard by volunteering when you really don’t have the availability (it’s important to remember this idea, but you can’t feel like someone’s life depends on you when you won’t be able to do it all…you have your own life to take care of as well). God bless you!

    This is an important message, that we will never know the good we do when we make sacrifices to help others. God sees our offering and accepts it and we can feel good about that. But we can also serve and love and sacrifice without sacrificing much needed activities for our own mental health. It's important as women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to serve and love and sacrifice AND make time for self care and even some of our wants so that we can continue to serve and love and sacrifice. Please know that it is OK and necessary to say no sometimes too. You get to decide and seek the spirit for those times, but know that there is still an incredible amount of good you do that you'll never know even when you need to say no to take care of your own mental health.

    Been there, done that! Makes me see what really matters. The son's prayer was a bucket-filler. A person has to have something in their bucket to be able to give to others. May we each fill each others buckets that none go empty. Alan Jackson has a song about "if everybody every where had a lighter load to bear and a little bigger piece of the pie, we'd be living us a pretty good life. One hand does wash the other.

Many of my friends have shared this video using social media, hoping to receive a much needed pick me up I watched it. This video is so unhealthy! Yikes! This poor mother portrayed needs to learn boundaries and self care. I wept for her at end not because the message was touching my heart but because I was so sad for her. I honestly feel like the same message could have been expressed in a much more healthy and positive light. I hope no mother feels she needs to sacrifice herself for some unseen benefits of others. We, as women, can still be powerhouses for good and take care of ourselves. An empty pitcher can not give water to others until it's full.

    We are often so focused on what we wanted to do we forget that some of the things we skipped were because the Lord needed us for something more than that. We should be open to help those around us because often the Lord sent them our way. When you feel that you failed just remember that you are helping the ones who need you most and the Lord is grateful for that. So what I'm trying to say is you *don't* _fail_ you just set something aside for the Lord

    I think it's kind of funny how the parents depicted can never really be shown losing their tempers like a normal person would. And even when they just calmly say "Go to bed!" the kids immediately obey. :D If only life was like that!
    This was great, though. It's hard sometimes to feel like you're doing everything you can, but as long as you're doing your best, blessings come!

    • @leannelaw2973

      +Abelhawk I was raised in a family like that and I have tried to create a family like that. We did lose tempers at times but we also had plenty of times when as a child with siblings we were more obedient than not and as a mom there were plenty of times I could have lost my temper and didn't. Just letting you know it is possible and worth trying to make it happen. I wonder if its one of those things on the list that we don't always acknowledge when it is happening. Keep trying. I appreciate your comment at the end. By the way, I am a mother of 12 children and we have lots of fun memories including (and maybe even most of them) days that didn't go as planned.

    "Many Mormon women do not have clear boundaries for themselves. They feel a sense of confusion about who they are, because many competing voices lay claim to them and they try to accommodate them all. For example, when I became a member of the Relief Society general presidency, I was appalled at how many women were tormented by guilt about their responsibilities as mothers. They seemed unable to see a boundary between themselves and their children. If a child deviated from what was expected, it became a burden that the mother bore. . . .
    It is a strength for women to be able to cross their own boundaries easily when they are meeting the needs of their children and serving others, but it is a great disadvantage when they feel every call for service as an imperative which they are obligated to meet. Remember, a boundary has “yes” on one side and “no” on the other. A woman who never feels that she can say “no” is lacking an important element of personal identity and, hence, personal safety.”
    -Chieko Okazaki, Boundaries, p. 5-6

In order to remain happy, healthy and not become overloaded and resentful it is so important to take time for ourselves. Its not selfish. I am so grateful for the sacrifices this mother gave for others that day! Life is difficult, and it rarely, if ever goes as planned. But when you sacrifice for the Lord, you will bless the lives of others. And even though she didn't get what she wanted in the end of the video, the Lord will still bless her. Her needs will still be met, and the things she cares about are still important to the Lord. She is loved, and she felt that during her son's prayer at the end, when she was able to remember what she did do that day.
