    A Springfield rep in a video regarding the RO series upon its intro, stated they use a lightweight firing pin in their 1911 pistols. He stated Springfield tested on prototypes by dropping on muzzle from up to either 8 or 12 feet (can't remember which) without causing it to fire (without pulling the tigger). That said, dropping to "half cock" for carry, would be a dangerous manipulation without the block. Also, it could be an issue if primer isn't set fully or if primers are soft...so, probably best to use factory ammo. Manual recommends against +P, but 4" barrel offers plenty velocity potential with standard pressure ammo versus a shorter barrrl utilizing +P. These are slick production 1911s, reliable, and run like clocks. Ramped barrel and specially designed mags with anyi-tilt follower enhances reliability. Great pistols, slim, light...feels nice to carry.

    My understanding is the EMP uses a titanium firing pin and heavy firing pin spring to pass the typical drop test. They are approved for sale in California, which means it passed a 40" drop onto concrete test.

    Thank you very much. Nice review. I just bought one of these suckers a couple of month ago, and like it so much more than my regular carry 9mm MP Shield. The barrel weight makes so much difference. Recovery time is almost instant. Great little shooter, and very accurate. One question though, you shoot without eyes, and ears? I'm half deaf because I didn't know any better back in the day. Oh the constant ring of tinnitus. The gift that keeps on giving.

    It’s fun watching a 1911 hater review a 1911. You bent over backwards like a 14 year old Russia gymnast to find a gig, I carried a 1911 as a secondary weapon for 5 years in the army and for 20 years as my primary carry as a civilian. Never had an ND, EVER.
    Comparing a series 70 and 80 trigger? You can’t tell the difference because you’re used to the half mile creep of the Glock.

      Note: got my EMP4 out of DROS jail last week, ran 250 rounds of mixed 124gr ball and 124 gr Critical Defense, no issues and inside 15 yards POI matched POA exactly. Also, my gun new in Jan 2020 came with 3 10 round magazines. I’m seriously loving it.

    Update to earlier comment: Today I had problems with extraction and stove piping using standard pressure Remington "green snd white box". No modifications, abuse, hand loads or +P. I'm discovering now Springfield might have taken shortcuts on installing the extractors on these and this is a common problem. Still like this pistol in all other aspects IF this problem gets fixed. Yes, it shouldn't have been a problem. I'll be calling Springfield ASAP.

      Within a week of reporting the problem to Springfield Armory warranty, they sent me a prepaid shipping label (good considering how busy manufacturers are right now trying to meet high demand). I'll be sending it to them this week.

    Easy to take down. When locked back on an empty mag you place a little L shaped tool in the recoil pin, drop the mag then pull the slide release, remove the slide, remove the recoil spring then barrel. Assembly is reversing the process.

    • @mickmcloughlin1646
      @mickmcloughlin1646 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't really even need the take down tool. It comes apart like a regular 1911. Just hold onto the spring so it doesn't end up in the atmosphere somewhere.

    Nice review. I really like my EMP 9mm. Easy to carry (for a Commander size all-metal handgun)...decent trigger, quick, accurate follow up shots. I've CCW carried it cocked and locked in full confidence for more than a year now. My only issue is the front sight. The fiber optic rod on mine flew off during a qualification shoot, not the best time for it to happen, although I did finish the course just fine. Actually, this is the first time I've ever owned a defense purpose firearm with a fiber optic sight, and unfortunately, it reinforced my belief that they are too fragile to depend on. I wish Springfield would offer a tritium option front sight in the future. I'll be on the hunt for a replacement tritium sight that also has good full daylight characteristics, if anyone has suggestions. Thanks!

    FYI.....There is a take down rod / tool that ships WITH this EMP4 CCC model in the box. There is also a hex wrench for the top sight as well, plus 2 extra rods of fiber optic. So you DON'T NEED a paper clip to remove the guide rod and spring assembly.

    Great video, thank you. Blessedly this firearm is Massachusetts legal, but due to the fact that it doesn’t have a firing pin safety (not drop safe), it it a less desirable choice for concealed carry then a modern striker fired pistol (I don’t like Glocks, but i’m issued one for my part time security job) or a modern hammer fired pistol like a HK P30SK. Massachusetts limits magazines to 10 rounds unless their “pre-ban, 1994 manufacture). The 9mm S&W Shield is the least expensive, new, pistol that i’d be willing to carry. Thank you.

    • @pinkiewerewolf
      @pinkiewerewolf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SuMtOnE I like the EMP 9. I still carry it. Mine is the 3", smaller than the firearm in the video. I'm in California, so I can't purchase the 4" model. wish I could...
      Pros:
      Its a shooter! Fun and accurate and it has been totally reliable. I shoot 124 grain defensive rounds and 124 FMJ for practice.
      For a smallish pistol its heavy enough to tame recoil. Its only a 9mm which makes it fun to practice at the range. Like I said, its been super reliable. No feeding or extraction issues. * see my con regarding grip issue.
      The night sites are really nice to pick up and acquire the target.
      Capacity, it isn't just a 5 or six shot baby 9mm.
      Its a freaking gorgeous handgun. Lets be real here, that matters to some people.
      Cons:
      It's an expensive firearm.
      Not for me but for some, its heavy for a smallish pistol. I don't notice it in concealment on my hip. I suppose if someone were to try something like ankle carry it might be an issue.
      Real cons:
      You have to pick the right holster because the wrong holster will allow the safety to move to the unsafe/fire position. Clinger holster is the only holster I've found that safely covers both of the ambi safeties so this doesn't occur.
      * this one might just be personal to me and my hands, I had to change the way I shoot this pistol compared to a full size 1911 with thumb safeties. I usually rest my thumb on the safety after flicking it off. I can't do that on the lil EMP9. My hand won't reliably engage the grip safety. Wasn't a big deal except it took more training to erase that muscle memory. Now I don't rest my thumb on full size 1911's thumb safeties either.
      The grip is long. So it isn't super concealment friendly in comparison to other smallish 9mm pistols. But it helps capacity.
      Long winded, I hope that helps.

    I carry an Emp 4 occasionally. Can't shoot accurately with less than a 4" barrel. It runs reliably when clean. For some reason I am able to shoot it very well. Like the 1911 grip angle. Don't like the Glocks for the same reason.

    Why all the hate for single action cocked and locked hammer fired pistols? Most striker fired pistols are single action cock and unlocked. Yes the Glock is sort of like a one and a half action. Yes the Glock has a finger dongle that unlocks the trigger. So the Glock is somewhat unique. But most other striker fired pistols are single action. They are cocked with no manual safety. Sig P320, Cock and unlocked. Sig M17, Cock and can be locked. HK VP9, Cocked and unlocked. Unless you count the trigger dongle. In Europe you can buy a VP9 with a manual 1911 style thumb safety. So in Europe you can buy a VP9 that is parked and locked. You should do a video on what type of trigger all of the popular striker pistols have. Nobody has done one. And very few people understand that striker style pistols are single action and double action.

    • @exotericidymnic3530
      @exotericidymnic3530 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      most striker fired pistols use the same trigger type as a glock, trigger safety and all. It's the "pre-cocked" (single action) striker guns that are the outlier. I don't personally consider any single-action pistol to be safe to carry without a manual safety engaged, I just can't trust a grip or trigger safety to keep the trigger locked 100% of the time. I also don't consider striker action guns like a glock to be safe for most people to carry and would instead recommend a double action gun.

    • @38north15
      @38north15 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@exotericidymnic3530 Call I knew for sure that the Springfield the Smith and Wesson and the HK are all single action. They are all pre-cocked. All you do is release the seer. On a Glock you have to partially cock and then release it so it’s not a true single action but it’s also not a true double action it’s kind of a 1.5 action

    I definitely disagree with your stance on 70 series 1911's most people that like 1911's prefer the 70 series because they are less complicated which means more reliability. Some manufacturers like Ruger do make safe 70 series guns with extra heavy firing pin springs and titanium firing pins.

    Which 1911 clones operate the firing pin plunger with the grip safety?

    • @handiediver
      @handiediver 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kimber 1911s have a firing pin block but their system is called Schwartz (sometimes spelled Swartz). Also note, he complains about the slide bite he received from the Gov't model shot previously but that is because you can't hold those like you hold a Glock. Standard grip safeties (non-beavertails) are fine if you grip them as intended; which is also how keeping one at the half-cock position was intended. If you can follow Jeff Cooper's instructions, you will be fine, but most people don't bother. In Jeff Cooper's book (To Ride, Shoot Straight, Speak the Truth) he talks about only keeping it at the half-cock when it is on the night stand beside him. It used to be that even Massad Ayoob had something to say about that but we are talking +thirty years ago. Springfield doesn't even offer those kind of standard grip safeties anymore; everything they make has a beavertail. I do agree with him on this though- it is not a beginner's pistol. If you didn't grow up with 1911s, if you were born post Glock, be careful as you begin your path down the single action highway. Single actions have great triggers but they are not for everyone.

    • @landnnut
      @landnnut 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@handiediver Thanks for the the reply. On reflection Ruger's approach with the titanium firing pin seems best to me. My first centerfire pistol was a Colt Combat Commander it came used with an aftermarket beavertail grip safety. In my limited experience I have never had slide bite. The serial number prefix is 80, but it does not have a firing pin safety. Glock was still that weird plastic gun in the late 80s and early 90s when I first started learning about firearms. I'm 50 odd years old so I have a foot in Cooper's and the modern plastic fantastics worlds. Never owned a Glock. I have never used half cock. If the Colt is loaded its cocked and locked. Just always seemed the correct way to operate the pistol to me, and it has never seemed dangerous or scary to me to have the hammer cocked with the safety on. And that was before I heard: "Cocked and locked the way John Moses Browning designed it". Still need to get Col. Coppers and some of Massad Ayoob's books.

      @@landnnut Yup, I think you and I are on the same page. Since leaving the Navy thirty years ago I carried mostly a Gov't model but sometimes an HK on my belt; always have a Baby Beretta on my ankle. In the above video at the 7:40 mark he shows the difference between the series 70 and 80. I don't think it has anything to do with the serial number prefix. The Colt Commander I have is series 80 and is a model 1991. My Springfield Gov't model is a series 70, 1911. The double stack is called model 2011. It's only the past couple years that I mainly carry HK on my belt. If I am headed to some sort of class where I have to shoot a lot, I'll use a P228. I know what you mean about the tactical tuperware, I got a mod 17 back when it was Gen 1 but never really took a liking to striker guns. The modern gun that has really grabbed my attention the past couple years is the P30SK, now I carry that thing around almost always. Great to live in such a great place where we are free to experiment so widely. This channel is definitely one of the best; I hope he keeps on making videos.
      One thing really worth looking at in the new guns, including the Gen 4 Glocks, is the progressive recoil spring. I think he has a video about that on this channel. That feature is in new models from many manufacturers; it is a big improvement. There is a company called DPM Systems that makes one for 1911; it is a really game changer.
