Oda and sanderson are probably the only 2 people who can just write for 20+ years and I have full faith in them. Unlike Martin, if either of these 2 took a 13 year break before their next book/chapter I would happily wait.
I have subscribed to you 2 years ago when you started One Piece and this is the first time you have uploaded about a non-manga book that I have read lol cant wait to watch this
I'm over an hour in and I'm thoroughly enjoying every moment of this. Szeth sweet boy I never did anything wrong. It gets me every single time and I actually laugh out loud😂😂
I'm 3 minutes in and I have all intentions to listen to every minute of this. But I had to stop and comment about Shallan... She's one of my favorite characters even though a lot of people don't feel the same way.... BUT now I'm really excited to see how you feel about her after the next book. ❤❤❤❤❤
Amazing review, loved the investment into the characters, and the passion. Listening to you experiencing the story reminded me why I fell in love with this series.
You should notice all The "oh you are so witty" phrases come from people that are below Shallan station. Jasnah actually talks about it with her. Characters flaws are not bad writing when is clear that are wrong things that a character has to improve. Just like Szeth doing everything that he is told by the master, Kaladin focusing only in negative things, Dalinar preaching behaviour, Jasnah being rude etc. After way of kings, Warbreaker is a good read before Words or Radiance. Palate cleanser and some things that you see are related with things that you find with words of radiance
Yeah, the "Shallan is so witty" bit is all about classism. She's a relatively privileged noble and it's not uncommon in the real world for lower/working class people to play up praise for upper class people to safeguard themselves in their interactions, even if that praise is entirely unwarranted. Shallan's utter lack of wit and charisma is meant to evoke dissonance in the reader when confronted by people saying Shallan is witty and clever when she's objectively not, and it's a commentary on the disparity between light eyes and dark eyes and the different realities they exist in.
I think people can also tell she's trying to be witty and clearly is failing st it. But random people aren't going to call her out. Jasnah directly does so.
Just finished and i am SOOOOO invested in your reactions. OMG. Sooooooo good. Can't wait for you to finish the next book. Aaaaaaaaah!!!! Makes me want to reread it. I heard someone else say they wish they had a coppermind and be able to reread like its the first time and if i could, i would reread for the first time. I miss that feeling of the end of way of kings. What a big payoff that was. Words of radisnce though. Ah! I hope you like it!!!!!!!
This is my favorite book of all time! (But book 4 of Stormlight is a close 2nd). I love the quote from the end of the final Kaladin chapter: "He'd finally managed to save someone. For now, that was enough."
10:55 The fact that you remember Kaladin's name is probably the best foreshadowing that you'll like his story! (I'll just ignore the few times you called him Kelsier. xD) 12:30 I still don't understand how the bridges work like how do they push them across chasms without falling?? xD 31:50 You should definitely read the epithets again if you have the time :D 37:15 At least your rational side is telling you not to trust Sadeas xD 41:00 Kaladin surviving the highstorm is such a main character moment and I'm loving every second of it xD 54:20 I didn't see Kabsals betrayal coming at all, but now that you quote him, it's kinda obvious xD 1:1:30 F*** Amaram 1:10:10 You're finished it at work?! I could never concentrate at work again xD 1:12:25 Kaladin finally reaches the goat status! 1:17:50 And this is the moment Dalinar becomes the goat too! Great recap! I had a blast listening to all your theories and seeing how close or how astronomically far away they are from the truth :D Is this how everyone felt when you first read OP xD If you want to read other Cosmere books in between Stormlight, you should check out Warbreaker. It's not mandatory, but it would be useful. Other than that, the only real must-read books are the two Stormlight novellas and the Mistborn Secret History novella :D
The bridges have hand holds out to the sides that they push and they hold the back part of the bridge to keep it from tipping into the chasm there's an animation someone did off what it should look like
I've only seen the review part, but I'll check out the rest later, but honestly it makes me so happy that you love it so much (+Yay for the trope discussion)! Kaladin's winning Bridge 4 over combined with the rescue will always be one of my favourite book arcs of all time! :D Now that I've finished Stormlight 5, it's actually crazy how much foreshadowing there is already in WoK that isn't revealed until book 5, and even things that aren't answered yet. Sanderson has his flaws, but the sheer amount of planned world building is really impressive! :D So, has your copy of Words of Radiance arrived yet? 👀 You've already mentioned it, but I just want to reiterate that WoR is even better :D
Glad you are enjoying the journey. Shortly before I started reading WoK I heard someone describe it as a book about a character having to make a fateful choice except the whole of the book shows that character would always make that choice because of who Kaladin is and all he has been through.
My favorite trope of this series is something I also like in Berserk - dour and brooding protagonist with carefree playful faerie creature trying to get the protagonist to lighten up. Anyway I just finished Words of Radiance so I can't wait to see that video in the future
the dark and brooding protagonist with a sunshine playful faerie is always fantastic :) I got my copy of words of radiance ordered and I can't wait to start it :)
Apologies if I end up comment spamming, and honestly I am usually a non-commenter... But wow! Is it so interesting to hear des after finishing the fifth book. No spoilers, but it is definitely interesting. So interesting. 😂 I just subscribed so that I can watch your reaction for the other books. No idea if and when you will, but I'm here for it. 🙂
I just got into the series. I’m on book 3 and I love it honestly. I’ve watched TH-cam videos were ppl breakdown the world and characters. It’s my first series in the Cosmere so it’s a lot but I’m in.
I’m about 580 pages in right now and I cant lie I’m struggling with the Shallan chapters. Jasnah is at least making them a little more interesting but I’m only hear for Kal and Dalinar currently
I’ve finally found a moment to start the second book! :) Shallan suggested being lowered from a moving ship to look at a turtle, so I’m liking her a lot more now But Kaladin is still my favourite as well :)
I am subscribing to your channel because this reaction was awesome!!! You are doing the rest of the series the same way, right? Can't wait to share in your emotions as you go through it!!! 😊😊😊
You finished just like that?! I did something similar. I chipped away at the first thousand pages over months, mildly interested. Then the last 200 pages in a few hours. So good!
“If I should die,” Dalinar said, “then I would do so having lived my life right. It is not the destination that matters, but how one arrives there.” “The Codes?” “No. The Way of Kings.” “That storming book.”
Hard Agree on Shallan's Characterization is not very kind on book 1. But it is on the Second beek that it really comes out. Shallan my fav character of whole series btw.. i know know, minority but.. even after wind and truth.
I personally prefer this book to the next book, but the next book is still almost as good as this one and has an even better flashback and you'll probably like Shallan a lot more in the second book.
hoid was the same name the informant that kelsier and later vin tried to talk to had happy that you finally started with stormlight archives. btw when is the next berserk video coming ?
33:00 Wit/Hoid is commenting on the Shard of Odium held by the vessel known as Rayse. In this context, Shard refers to pieces of Adolnalsium, the creator God that was splintered into 16 "Shards" long ago. It's where the plate and blades get their name.
I haven’t had the time to film that one, Sadly I didn’t record myself as I was reading it so it will just be me talking about the story I want to go into more detail about the individual story arcs and themes… so I can’t just ramble of the top of my head like I usually do
I feel like you misinterpret other character's commentary on Shallan's wit. It's more a veiled insult, they're saying she has wit like the King's Wit i.e. she's just insulting everyone, i.e. she has a sharp tongue and not a clever one. But they make it sound like praise, because she's light eyes and thus above their station. As for why she has that bad habit, you have to read and find out. At the very least it makes sense why sailors would like that, since there's some novelty to a young Noble girl insulting everyone for little reason. edit: in any case you're right to be annoyed by her in this book LMAO Kaladin and Dalinar have such amazing journeys across the Way of Kings and I love the feeling of destiny as their two paths finally cross and they each basically save the other's lives.
The beginning before it switches to a vlog should be spoiler free/ spoiler light Then it’s my thoughts as I read the book (I’ll add a note in the timestamps when the spoilers start) I don’t consider how I talked about the characters in the beginning a spoiler but some people don’t want any information that’s not in the synopsis and I go into a hair more detail then that (hence spoiler light)
Fandom loves to excuse Shallan. Some arguments are valid. But yeah I think it was Sanderson more telling us she's so smart and funny than showing us. Sanderson humor is bad (middle aged Mormon man is bad at humor, who woulddve thought), so maybe it's for the best he told us more than showed us. Shallan does get better. Sanderson finds her voice after a bit. Idk if you read Wheel of Time. Sanderson finished that series for RJ. Well. Matt, a funny character, was also Sanderson weakest writing and it took him like 3 books to get him right. Anyways, besides that, the series is AMAZING. Welcome. The characters are great. Sanderson specialty is action scenes and emotional gut punches. You'll love it 😂
Welcome to the Cosmere, interesting how One Piece and Stormlight Archive fandoms overlap!!!
Oda and sanderson are probably the only 2 people who can just write for 20+ years and I have full faith in them. Unlike Martin, if either of these 2 took a 13 year break before their next book/chapter I would happily wait.
They have similar scope and appeal and a lot of the TH-cam people who talk about Sanderson have branched out into OP in the last 5 years or so.
right i begin with one piece then i find the cosmere
It's official. To quote WIRED, Brandon Sanderson is your god 😂😂😂
I have subscribed to you 2 years ago when you started One Piece and this is the first time you have uploaded about a non-manga book that I have read lol cant wait to watch this

Aww your critiques of Shallan are valid but its hurts to hear cuz she's my fave - hoping you like her writing more in the next book! :)

So glad you are reading the stormlight archive, its so good, good.
I’m loving it so far :)
Amazing review, loved the investment into the characters, and the passion. Listening to you experiencing the story reminded me why I fell in love with this series.
At last. Its time to be radiant
I am soooo here for this, 1 1/2 hours, jippie!! Very excited for this

I didn't expect "Man runs carrying a bridge whit the boys" to be peak fiction but here we are
✋🗿✋
Also regarding Shallan: *_I AM A STICK_*
But you _could_ be fire...
I love the smell of a new Stormlight fan on the morning.
@39:30 "Surprisingly I made a decent amount of progress by reading at work"
AHAHAHAHAHAHAH so relatable
We got another one, boys and girls! Welcome to the fandom, ma'am.
This a very interesting. I love your take on this. Very excited to see you read this without reading his other books
Journey Before Destination ❤
Strength before Weakness.
These words are accepted
This is my favorite book of all time! (But book 4 of Stormlight is a close 2nd). I love the quote from the end of the final Kaladin chapter: "He'd finally managed to save someone. For now, that was enough."
Some of your comments are really funny, having finished book 5, and The Sunlite man.
10:55 The fact that you remember Kaladin's name is probably the best foreshadowing that you'll like his story! (I'll just ignore the few times you called him Kelsier. xD)

37:15 At least your rational side is telling you not to trust Sadeas xD
41:00 Kaladin surviving the highstorm is such a main character moment and I'm loving every second of it xD
54:20 I didn't see Kabsals betrayal coming at all, but now that you quote him, it's kinda obvious xD
1:1:30 F*** Amaram
1:10:10 You're finished it at work?! I could never concentrate at work again xD

-epithets- Epigraphs. An epithet is an insult, the more shakespearean the better. And yeah, there is so much juice in the epigraphs of these books.

sadly the mail is really slow, I forgot canada post is on strike so thats probably why, WoR set to arrived on the 20th :)
Glad you are enjoying the journey. Shortly before I started reading WoK I heard someone describe it as a book about a character having to make a fateful choice except the whole of the book shows that character would always make that choice because of who Kaladin is and all he has been through.
Kaladin is an amazing protagonist.
Oh welcome, I watched your AOT videos, and now I'm excited to follow you on your Stormlight Journey.

But Kaladin is still my favourite as well :)
@booksandtropes I really enjoyed that moment too. Shallan grew on me a lot in Words of Radiance.
Szeth-son-son-Vallano truthless of Shinovar is now officially: Szeth, with z, my sweet boy, done nothing wrong in his entire life

mummy makes senses,
I'm wondering if there's some kind of paralyzing power or poison... maybe she shot something at him
Agree on Shallan. But even with this, it's an amazing series. Can't wait for you to get to the rest of the series.
“If I should die,” Dalinar said, “then I would do so having lived my life right. It is not the destination that matters, but how one arrives there.”
“The Codes?”
“No. The Way of Kings.”
“That storming book.”

just think about it this way. Everyone is carrying around glowing marbles in their pockets lol
I’ll deffo save this and come back when I’ve gone thru the first read
Welcome to the Cosmere!
"19:34-40" oh wow, yes, and i hope you remember that should you read book 2 or 3 i need a reread. And welcome to the Cosmere!

I've listened to the entire series - I haven't read a page 😂
