      My grandfather served during WWll and after he passed I got a box that has some odds and ends that belonged to him! There is a ring with initials, a date, and Manila on it that he found while there! It makes you wonder could he have known the person who wrote that letter as we only live a few hours from where you are! If he was still alive he would have been 102 this past year! I was in my young teens when he passed 19 years ago, but the stories I know he could have told about things he seen! As an adult I wish my grandparents were still here as they have all passed away, so I could ask them about things when they were younger and some of the things they have seen and done in their lives!

    Great find. A while back I found a nearly 200 year old family bible in about the same condition or a little worse that had been abandoned. It had the whole family births and deaths up until the 1940's in it. I scanned all of those pages to document them. Was sad to see how it had just been abandoned and forgotten, but I saved it and at least keeping it from totally disappearing.

      @@Karl-Hungus Thanks. I'm deep into my family genealogy and I do a few searches every two weeks so much is getting digitized all the time. Label it well, and maybe use some key tag words. I don't just use Ancestry. I search Google Books regularly because it searches everything inside the book and not just books, so I can do a search for "Jennnings, Berkeley County, West Virginia History" and if Jennings is in some book it will find it. I had a 89 year old patient who told me her father was born in a jail. I figured that meant her father was the Sheriff and the family lived in back of, or above the jail. I got the county, did a search for her grandfather's name in that county in Illinois and it came up with state bookkeeping records that showed individual payments made to him for traveling to "bring a criminal for justice. " So I contacted the current sheriff of the county and asked him if he knew of her grandfather and he said yes and sent me info for her and he also mailed me his own Sheriff's hat to give to her. She was thrilled!

    This was such a wonderful thing Robert. I hope you find a proper conservator for the Bible, what a precious object to find. I hope you can do some research and find out more about the people in the letters too. Were they Byrd's?
    Folks wonder how things come to be in such strange places?! Well I can tell you! When I was doing elder care for my father in-law, an ex-Navy officer and Pearl Harbor Survivor in his 80's, he told me one day he wanted me to have all of his military papers and letters. I was told to go to a certain place in the garage of their old house, and take down that portion of the wood pile I would find there. Inside the wood pile were hidden box after box of his papers and WWII letters, as well as pictures and maps. He also told me where he had hidden his WWII side arm and webbed belt, (which was inside a hidden compartment in a tall closet), and to take them as well and give them to my son. I went and found things just as he said. I don't know what would have happened if he hadn't told me?! About that same time, my mother in-law told me where to go and get her jewelry and take it. It had been put inside the base of their hot tub. A space had been specially built that opened by pressing spring loaded tiles. If you didn't know just where to look you never would have seen it. When I think of how many times I used that bathroom and sat on the facility looking at those tiles, never knowing the jewelry hoard behind them, and thinking how we sold the house after they passed, and it could all still be there, I still shudder.
    My grandmother was the same way, always squirreling things away. One time back in the early 1980's my husband and I went for a visit. My husband was a lover of old guns and we were talking to her about it. My grandma got up and went into her bathroom, but left the door open. We thought it a bit strange, as we could hear her making a lot of noise and banging about, so we went in to check on her. And entire back wall of closet shelves had been taken out by her, and behind a panel she had removed, she began to take out rifle after rifle, all wrapped in oil cloth. We took them carefully and laid them out on the couch in her living room. Six in all. They dated from the 1800's up to the 1940's. She told the history of each one and who in the family she wanted them to go to. I was floored! I grew up never knowing my grandma even owned a gun, let alone six. If something had happened to her, we would have never known anything about them. Once again, the house has long been sold, and it makes think, what if she'd never said anything?!

      Easy enough to find out. Go the the county extension office and ask to see their older plat books. They show who owned what parcels of land in a County. They still make them. Our County just had their newest one come out a week or two ago. Once you know who owned it, it's just a matter of looking them up in County records. Also, that letter from William, if he's passed on you can write to the national archives for a military & pension records form, fill it out and send it to them and for something like 20 bucks if I remember right, you can get their place of birth, war records, service records and pension records from after the war. I did that with a Great-Great-Grandfather and discovered quite a lot about him. Everything from where and when he joined the army to his height, weight, hair & eye color. Discovered after the war between the states, he divorced his first wife after 11 kids with her because "she wouldn't perform her 'wifely' duties" and re-married to my Great-Great-Grandmother and had 4 children with her! He was born in 1847 and died in 1923 and his last child, My Great Aunt Edna was born in 1903 and died in 2007 at 104. I knew her back then but never thought to ask her about her Dad much.

      Old bibles are common. The words themselves are the priceless treasure

    • @dwderp
      @dwderp 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ingeborg M The words would not have been lost long ago if this Bible disappeared. I have a Bible on my shelf that has the exact same words in it. It is the Word which is valuable. The physical book is meaningless. I'm not trying to be difficult or rude, but we have got to live in reality. Mass produced Bibles are practically worthless. Even old ones.

    • @rosesrred5074
      @rosesrred5074 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But it isn’t the actual Bible that is valuable. It’s the history of that family Bible and the people who held it in their own hands that make it valuable. I have my old family Bible that was my great great grandfather’s. He was born in 1825. When he was 17 he went hunting in Iowa, from Indiana, but he got caught in a blizzard & froze his legs. They had to amputate from below his knees. Twice. Cannot imagine how he suffered. But he went on to marry twice, teach school and own a store in Birdseye, IN. He even platted out a town, New Louisville, which didn’t get far because the railroad by-passed the town. It’s mostly Hoosier National Forest land now. And he was musical. I know because I have his metronome and autoharp. And I have his chair that was made at the Birdseye, IN chair factory. (At least, that’s what I was told by the county historian) , and a big, framed portrait taken in Eckerty back in the day. Lewis B Walls was his name. His daughter, Nancy Lillie Fanny Walls was my great grandmother.

    Incredible find! If I may...My brother has dealt with paper preservation, and anytime I found an old book, he said to put it in a ziplock bag, and put it in the freezer to kill the mold. I would also take any other relics out of the book and put them in a separate bag, and put those in the freezer as well. Even though you can't see any mold on the letters and other items, it is probably there. Since paper is porous, mold spreads easily. You might want to check into getting the letters hermetically sealed. That way they can be viewed, but not damaged by handling. :)

    I know you are from the south and I am too. I am a writer and recently talked to a highschool friend who is a retired teacher. I happened to mention to her that "Calvary" and "cavalry" were two different things. She was astonished as she thought - a teacher - that they were both the same word! Mt. Calvary was where Christ was reported to have been crucified and cavalry are those soldiers that "save the day" in John Wayne movies. It's a southern-thing to use one word interchangeably, but you might want to tuck the idea away when you decide to use one or the other meanings.:) You may be able to go on the internet and find those soldiers in a census. Many military records of this era were destroyed in a devastating fire in St, Louis after the war. Aside for your own nostalgia, preserving the Bible professionally will not add any monetary value. If it were a Gutenberg Bible it would be worth millions but even a bible from the 1700's has little monetary value.

    Loved the video. I hope you take good photos of each item you found while they are still legible. I can remember many a farmer here in Alabama sitting on his porch, reading his Bible on a Sunday afternoon. Could have left it there, then became sick and never made it back to his favorite chair on the porch. And as the porch deteriorated, the Bible just slid into the remains of the porch and remained there all these years. Do you have several old pictures of the house from that time? Do you know what family owned it or the chain of ownership? Might could track down some family with old pictures.
