That Tess channel was set up so I could post a video when Daisy was a pup. Tess was my other lab. Amy was helping me get a TH-cam name and everything we tried was already taken so we set it up as tess99991. Got that one. It was an impossible name for people to remember. ;-)

I am extra specialty glad bcuz like you I am Canadian, only I live 45 minutes East of Vancouver, in a City by the name of Maple Ridge! I was born and raised here on the lower mainland. I am a jewelry designer/artist. I have just received for Christmas from my husband the Raytex Tumble-Vibe Tumbler andI am so in LIVE with the whole process from Rock Hounding to cutting rocks, making cabochons. This I am just starting. My whole life I have been artistic in every sector of my career years, until I got sick almost 15 years ago.
Chronic Lyme Disease & Chronic Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (Pain Disease). For the first 8 years I was on so much medication I was not coherent then with the help of My Lyme/ Pain Dr she and I made a plan to get off the meds that I did not need, which that was March 2020 just as the Pandemic broke. Now that my mind was a lot clearer, not foggy I could then get back into my heading that I have done in my teens, I am 58 now. Then I watched a few of your videos and some of Matt’s Crazy Rock Jewelry here on TH-cam. I visited my rock store which you probably know of the store. Great bunch of people MarkOnRock Lapidary Supplies in Abbotsford, BC, about 20 mins from me, which is great and a curse at the same time, lol. I was buying cabs but the. I was watching how to cut rock, supplies needed, how to shape and polish etc...
MarkOnRocks has a Band Saw which is perfect for cutting up my slabs and cutting out cabs that would be perfect for me but of course being on Disability I don’t have a lot extra to spend, but I manage.

Pretty neat finish on those pieces. I might have to look at getting a tumbler once I have sufficient good material to make it worthwhile.

Everything about this video was so wonderful, but somehow the way the ivory soap grated into those little curls was especially satisfying, maybe because it was so unexpected!

I also have a 12 lb number, but it takes quite a bit of rock to fill it. If I was to buy again, I would get a dual 6 lb (runs one or two 6 lb barrels) and also buy an extra 12 lb barrel which will fit. That gives options. ;-)

My previous lab loved raw potatoes or potatoes skins too. Daisy won't touch them unless cooked and covered with butter. She has never missed a meal, so can be picky. Spoiled.

I think I had one Montana in there. I have a shopping bag of them to tumble soon. I am just hoping for some somewhat decent weather so I can cut outside.
We have had many discussions on tumbling over the years and regardless of method it is an amazing idea someone had, reproducing the method used by nature, transforming Rocks into pebbles, gravel, chips and finally sand, but changing it slightly so it would enhance the beauty and retain that look of a stone you find on the seashores.
One idea I didn't run past you was using less water which would created a slurry or paste much faster and adding a little water every few days, this was just another theory for speeding up the process, although tumbling takes about thirty days, in reality it takes nature millions of years.

It is a pain in the butt to open a tumbler barrel and try to clean it to run again. I would not want to open it to add water. To speed things up, the pros use a vibe tumbler for stage 3 & 4. Much faster. I have it on my wish list.

So in your opinion it is quicker if you tumble stages 1 & 2 for smooth round edges and finish in the vibraory tumbler.
There are varied opinions on vibraory tumbling, from don't buy one to get one they are the dogs.
I made a vibrating table for large flat pieces, that was easy enough once I had located an outlet for vibrating motors, the design changed several times and I found the best method was suspending under a flame using rubber bungee, for the final polish I used round baking tins lined with thick felt, three fitted perfectly once I had made two small flats on each rim where they touched.
Only used it once, if I don't have enough room when I relocate it will be scrapped, shame really.

I actually have one but broke it trying to polish silver which I am guessing was too heavy. It is on my work bench and I hit a snag trying to take it apart. I set it aside and should take another look sometime soon.

Quality rock helps. Otherwise, pay really good attention in the polish stage to ensure your barrel and rocks are clean. I am liking 2+ weeks for polish and longer with smaller tumblers.
Rocks turned out great! You should try the Aluminum Oxide 8,000 grit polish from the Rock Shed.

Thanks! I just did my first two batches of agates to use as gifts. I found that burnishing in borax didn’t work. Refurnish in soap did work. Unexpected. Happy new year!

I reuse. But I never move media from stage 3 to 4. I don't want any prior grits in my polish

I have 2 questions if you dont mind? When I cut a brazilian and it has a pocket I wonder if it could have been an enhydro? I wonder if theres a test or light? Where do you get your findings? I like drilling mine as well? thanks and love the vids!
I have read that agate from Rio Grande can have microscopic water in the agate and sometimes other debris. I haven't noticed it. One test when the inside hollow is large is to shake it. With most of the agate I have seen, the vug is somewhat open to the outside, so no water.

Were you using cutting oil? If so, were you wearing a mask to preventing the mist of the oil from being breathed in.

I was using the oil that came in a saw I bought used. I need to drain it and add my own. I am suspicious that it might have been olive oil, which is better than nothing but not right
@@meMiner probably mineral oil. There is a lot of types of mineral oil though. I use water because I have no cover when I cut and do not want to inhale the oil mist. I drain the reservoir every use. Looking to upgrade with auto feed and/or cover as well. Blade increase would be preferred as well. Thanks again for the video.
How long do those 1lb containers of grit on average last you?
It depends on what machine(s) I am running. The 3 lb barrel uses about 6 tablespoon of each grit for stages 1-3 and half that for stage 4 (polish). I am cheap, so try to get away with less, especially on softer rock. My 6 and 12 lb barrels eat the grit up quickly, as the suggested quantities don't change - 2 tbsp for each pound of rock for coarse, med. and fine stages. 1 tbsp/lb rock for polish. You can reuse polish if you clean it, but I don't bother.

@@alexw0121 All of the disks on my flat lap are original. I don't use the lap often. I have extra disks but haven't had to change them up yet
@@alexw0121 Probably 5 minutes or so. The coarse girts, I do until I have the shape I want. The later disks to remove the small scratches for the polish.
If I have a small tumbler do I still stumble for two weeks
Size of the tumbler doesn't matter. That just affects the quantity of rock processed. The beginner advice is one week for each stage and then burnish. But time in each tumble really relies on the hardness and shape of the rocks going in. Softer rocks take less time. Rocks that are already rounded take less time. Longer in earlier stages tend to mean somewhat less time in the next stage. At the end of the day, the rocks will tell you when they are ready

Very cool invite. Canada border is closed right now and not sure when they will open it. I was planning to drive out west (from Ontario) next summer and Montana would be a great side trip. It depends. I like about 2 table spoons in a 6 lb tumbler but can always go more but at some point it is a waste
