      Glad it helped. What type of deck do you have?

    Any recommendation for replacement bearings for the direct-drive motors on a Revel kit?

  • @prone4life

    Thinking about doing a direct drive diy build. Do you have any suggestions/thoughts on what motor kit to go with? Torqueboards DD kit is kinda expensive but prolly well built. With cheaper kits I worry about the quality of other motors. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions about a good quality DD motor that comes in at decent price? Thanks and I appreciate your content.

      I have heard that TB has top quality DD assemblies. I've never ridden them. Here is a thread you can check out.
      forum.esk8.news/t/torqueboards-direct-drive-motor-kit/6898/346
      Elofty seems to be out of business. Boundmotors are on double kingpin which scare me.
      Revel Kit is the lowest cost path to DD. It won't be as fast as a TB DD assembly but the Revel Kit is no slouch, especially with 4WD. The Revel kit complete cost for a 2WD setup including swappable battery, wheels, ESC, remote is about the same cost as the TB DD assembly. The Revel Kit is pretty durable. Some riders are over 2000 miles with no motor problems. Check out posts by @joeeskate on this thread.
      forum.esk8.news/t/revel-at-the-brand-new-competitor-in-the-direct-drive-esk8-race/1374/2029 I think he's close to 3000 miles. He's a former Boosted board ambassador-- now a Revel Kit rider.
      One reason to go with the TB drive assembly would be if you want 6 inch pneumatics and a massive fixed battery. Another reason would be if you want to travel over 50KPH or if you want to win races against high performance DIY's or top tier units like the Lacroix.
      I've been really interested in substituting the TB DD on to the Revel Kit just to see what it could do. Its just a lot of money.

    What is that blue stuff? Is there another name for it? I'm not American and I'm trying to find an equivalent of it

      Lots of different versions of poster mounting putty are out there. Some are blue. Some are white. Here are a few brand names: Elmer's Tac N Stik, Loctite Fun Tak, Scotch Mounting Putty, Duck Brand Removable Poster Putty, Lepage Fun Tak. Look in the glue area of the stationary section of most retail stores or search on-line.

    What about electronics specific WD40 'contact cleaner'?
    Seen people use that to clean hub and outrunner motors.

    • @subarufamily
      @subarufamily  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you search you tube for how to clean BLDC motors, you will find that the consensus is to not use wither WD40 or Electronics cleaners. Both contain high concentrations of Alcohol which can damage the thin plastic coating on motor windings. This is the advice that I've seen from people who seem to know more than me. I've seen others use WD40 and electronics cleaners to flush out the Revel kit motors and the motors have work immediately afterwards. The concern is what happens over the long term. Plastics are highly vulnerable to chemicals. If there is a reaction, the plastics can crack and fall apart.
      The Motor bearings have a thin plastic dust shield that blocks grit from entering the bearing space. Its just one more piece of plastic that you would not want to subject to chemicals including alcohol.

      @@subarufamily true, although it does clearly state some are safe for rubber and plastics?

    Do you happen to know if a 4WD set up would fit on a 34" deck? I don't see the length measurement on the Revel site (just the weight and truck width). I should say that I don't plan to do battery swaps, so I don't really need the extra clearance to slide them in and out.

    • @subarufamily
      @subarufamily  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The exact measurements are here:
      forum.esk8.news/t/revel-at-the-brand-new-competitor-in-the-direct-drive-esk8-race/1374/510
      You need about 25 inches between the closest pairs of truck mounting bolts if you want to slide the batteries out. About 20 inches if if you want the batteries fixed in place with an inch of clearance to access the charging ports.
      The length of the deck is not as important as the bolt hole spacing. If it's tight, you can always drill new holes to add an inch or two of clearance.

      @@subarufamily Thank you for the link and precise info. I'm not sure why it isn't listed on their website... you would think such a detail would be useful for customers.
      Based on your info, I am now hunting for decks with a 20 - 24 inch wheel base. I prefer shorter decks and find them stable even at higher speeds.
      For example, I currently have an electric board that is only 31" and I feel comfortable at 25 to 28 mph. Short boards feel more controllable to me I suppose.

    • @subarufamily
      @subarufamily  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Revel Kit is faster than most causing me to prefer longer decks. But if your weight and height leaves you comfortable traveling at electric skateboard speeds on a short wheel base, then I'll assume you've got skills and know what you are doing. If you were a manual skateboarder making assumptions about electric then I'd have different advice for you. People who go fast on manual skateboards tend to do so on perfect roads. They can be in for a surprise when they try to combine top speed on an electric skateboard with imperfect pavement and a shorter wheel base. Whatever length deck you choose, if you plan to go fast, the first thing you need to do is upgrade the pivot bushings for venom or riptides that match your weight. The stock bushings are not for speed. If you are ordering a revel kit, order pivot bushings on the same day so you can make the change immediately.

      @subarufamily  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A 20 inch wheel base won't have 20 inches between the inner bolt holes. Wheel base is measured from axle to axle. the inner bolt holes are closer together than the truck axles. So maybe do a bit of measuring and math to convert the measurements that I gave you into wheelbase. I would guess you would want to add an inch.

    • @Mr-E.
      @Mr-E. 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@subarufamily Ah I see, thanks for the correction on the wheel base. As someone who weighs 200 pounds, more resilient bushings is important. I'll definitely take your advice on that (probably will order the venoms). On a side note, after you sent me the esk8 forum link I went through posts going back several months, and found one where you mentioned top mounting the Revel kits to a dropped deck. I really like that idea for all the benefits you stated (water splash prevention, lower center of gravity, possibly less vibrations/play on the kits. I had always admired the Carvon direct drives with the Landyachtz Evo deck... so if I can find something similar to that, perhaps something that isn't sold out... I might go that route. Extender plates and all... Thank you for your advice, I'll keep you updated after I find the right deck. Also Happy Thanksgiving!

    Why not just take it apart?

      Weekly disassembly of the drive assembly for the purpose of lubrication? That would be very time consuming. Or are you suggesting disassembling the motors to remove the bearings for cleaning and and oil bath. That would require melting the permanent loctite. It would be a lot of wear and tear on the motor screws. A special press may be required to remove and re-seat the motor bearings. I am interested in attempting a motor bearing replacement. I've been looking for videos to illustrate the process. Let me know if you've seen one.
