90+ percent of the time, the sensors are killed by letting the gauge "warm up" the sensor before starting the engine. Nobody tells you ( except me ) that "warmed up" means GLOWING ORANGE HOT 1200F. AND that the sensor element, inside, is CERAMIC. So, turning the ignition on and letting it set there for a few seconds, before starting the engine causes the HOT ceramic element to get hit with a rush of cold exhaust ( and, usually some condensation water ). This causes fractures in the ceramic element. The cracks grow on every heat cycle, like windshield cracks. First, the sensor loses accuracy, because of air leaks. Then, eventually, the cracks hit something REALLY important. And, the sensor will just show FULL LEAN, 14.7, or FULL RICH. They usually start out being finicky about EGT.
@@awautoworks4426 Just follow the normal installation. The trick is to never leave the ignition on for more than a few seconds before starting the engine, As soon as the WB gets power, it starts heating the sensor. Original equipment ECU WBs know when the engine is running ( Because they are in the ECU ). So, they don't start heating up until after the engine is running. Aftermarket WBs, generally, don't know if the engine is running, or not, until it is too late. If you have left the gauge on, for more than a few seconds, without starting the engine, power it off, for at least 30 seconds, to let the sensor cool down to just scalding hot, before starting. If you see an AFR number, or " - - - -" , the sensor is, generally, already at full temp.
Turbo Grocery ...or you can wire in a switch so that you can turn it on yourself a short time after starting the engine. I turn mine one around 20 seconds later. AEM Fuel Ratio is the worst. I'm having the same problem in my 1970 Nova SS . AEM sent me a sensor but before they did I had to take a video of me cutting the harness as close to the sensor as possible. I installed the new sensor they sent and what else, the same problem. Now AEM wants me to take a video smashing the gauge before they send a new one. I told them I tested the gauge and it is working properly as per specs. It fails only when sensor is connected to it. It is doing exactly what the last sensor did to it. I asked for a new sensor and the guy said that it's not the sensor because we replaced it with a new one. I told him that just because it's new doesn't mean it is good. As an aircraft engineer with 40 years of experience I trust old parts that are proven to work correctly, then a new part. He told me that he is the expert on this AEM part and he is not supporting me. I told him to go jump in a lake and put the Guage kit on my wall with a note to all customers not to buy or trust anything made by AEM.

I have the same gauge in my evo 8. Car is barely driven. Maybe 5000km on the sensor/gauge and it’s gone to shit. On start up it goes from 14.7 to off the dial lean. Contacted the place I bought it from and was told it’s a wear and tear item so nothing can be done. Really annoyed cause it’s not a cheap setup.
Smeedia, I’ve been running E85 in my 2015 FRS for 5 yrs. delicious flex fuel tuned. Went from my sprintex supercharger 287/232 Trq back to N/ A to learn better car control at track events. My son surprised me with a current SBD turbo kit. I’m finishing up my supporting mod purchases before my install myself next month. I’m retired Air Force aircraft mechanic so I’m up to the task. I’m adding an oil temp gauge and of course boost gauge. Now I’m all screwed up in so much as adding a decent AFR gauge. I know I’m damn sure not going AEM. I’m asking you which gauge/ sender kit do you recommend now, which ones are compatible with E85. I damn sure don’t want to go through this headache 3 , 4 times. I was initially thinking pro sport gauges due to their electronic box as easy access. Need help here amigo. Thx in advance.
So I love the AME gauge itself but the sensors are trash. For me I used the AEM pig tail with a Bosch sensor I bought off of amazon and spliced the two together. Used it in my STI on E85 Nd had no issues with sensor failure. I use thr same Frankenstein of a sensor in my turbo BRZ and it handles the heat very well. If your using ECU Tek for your FRS you can monitor oil temp from the app on your phone as well. 🙏
As for proportion ive never been a huge fan of them, I like guages that stand out and are quick to reference when driving. But prosport has a good reputation, not too sure on what sensors they use though
Smeedia thx bud as always, I’m running the delicious flex fuel app for ethanol content and presure on my I phone. So that screws me up for having my phone tied up damn it. I wish I could find away to add an ethanol permanent gauge to the delicious flex fuel set up without the Bluetooth operation. Without having to but a complete different E85 kit. My problems ha ha I’m rambling. But thx sir
Smeedia I’m Ecutek tuned but not via the blue tooth I’ve got the old cable set up and update it every other month. I guess it’s time to update more money spent 😁
So on my boosted GSR fully built Turbo E85 flex fuel I was having the same - - - - - issue but noticed whenever I Pressed and held the window up or window down button it would read correctly within range as soon as I let go of the button it would Go back to - - - - - I have not really troubleshooted yet since I have aem cd7 dash and can get accurate readings from the can bus it's using.....FWIW
I feel your pain, I have the same issues with a grams performance A/F gauge. I believe it might be a bad sensor, was working fine and now it just read lean, even when driving. Any updates on what caused it to do this on your end?
It was the sensor, I ended up buying a generic sensor off of amazon and using the Pig tail from AEMs sensor, spliced them together and its worked great ever since. I know the frustration though of getting one and it not working though 🙃
so I have an issue with my wideband guage maybe you can help. It doesn't display all the digits. example 14.7 as 14 and a part of the digit. Any suggestions?
I know this is a late response but my afr gauge isn’t even lighting up when i start my car. But once i press the right button on the gauge itself it’ll start reading “O2, afr” and something else i forgot, then when i press the left one it’ll read “donE” and shut back down I’m not sure what the problem is. But my boost gauge seems to be working fine
Hey man, I’m just curious if you’re her figured out the issue. I just installed same wideband and idled then drove for 10 minutes working normal then all sudden went to 3 dashes. Works for a few seconds on start up then goes back to the 3 dashes. I’m assuming o2 sensor bad?
I bought a brand new one, tested it out before install it worked. Installed it all, now it flickers once before turning it on and that's it... power and ground are good
Arnaldo Graceski you can calibrate it like you said or aem has pre tuned it from their factory ready to go its either way... They make it have a calibration test if you have issues with it or if its dirty and you re clean it and the gauge is not showing the numbers accurately etc...
Ended up swapping to a Amazon O2 sensor. Even today AEMs sensors are still poop. Last time I talked with them they said they had a revised sensor in the works. IMO it's not worth sending the unit back. You'll get another sensor that will kill itself. And 5 pin Lamda 4.9 LSU Sensor off Amazon should work
I called them and told them I put new sensor in new gauge in still don’t work they were insisting that it’s the gauge and to send it back to them and by a new gauge and harness
what the hell is wrong with AEM if this is a consistent problem..I just got one installed on my bike and its doing the same exact thing..Im going to write to company about getting a replacement sensor and take it from there.
Glowshift black series 7 is good not e85 supported though... Innovative or Apexi or Apex then... I have a x series and its good for me... Really sensitive on the numbers but its weird that your going through that... Just a thougt if you have a no cats run the ls9 sensor on the rear passenger o2 and delete it just the bk rear... Worked on my mustang but on subi not sure hate the bung weld crap and its just a thought if you haven't tried it... Good luck on that subi sounds good.. If you do the delete have the rear passenger o2 turned off or check light will be tossed on... Just clear the code or codes and turn just that one off.. Again maybe where the location of the ls9 is at? Hope it works....
The link to the gauge should be in the description, but it was the sensor, ended up having to buy one off of Amazon and splice the pigtail from AEM sensor onto it to get one working
Hahaha, this is funny.............I had an Innovate AFR gauge, it worked for 9 months. Warranty had run out so I just bought the AEM unit without a sensor knowing the sensors are the same for both. Guess I was wrong. Gauge goes to full lean when you turn it on, which means no sensor is connected. Different sensors......Edit... no no no, I just put a lighter to the sensor and it works. The problem I had was there was a bung extension and the sensor wasn't reading.
@@chuckheinch mine has done the same thing, worked perfect for like 10 min, then 3 dash, hondata says its pushing 3.9 volts entire time. weird thing about mine is that it starts at 14.7 while warming up im assuming then it actually ticks through all the numbers nearly to 3 dashes. my bung was the same the entire time so I dont think its the bung or it wouldnt have worked perfect for 10 min imo
My boost gauge is flat lined tried different fuses. The connections are good and it is sharing power to the afr gauge...idk about aem I really wanted to stick with aem since I want everything to be the same... pretty pissed haha
My original Bosch sensor worked for about 8 months before it started reading incorrectly and not reading at all. I replaced it with an Amazon equivalent which worked for about 3 weeks but started doing the same as the old one then one day it repeated the heat cycle multiple times completely. My sensors about 24 inches from my turbo at about a 9 o'clock angle.
The problem is maybe the sensor location. I've got inovate AFR Gauge and the sensor right back after the turbo (Invidia Cat'ed downpipe). I've already replace 3 sensors. I install a switch to power the gauge and heat sink bung but i still have issues with the sensors. I was thinking of change for a AEM afr kit but i see you've got the same issues. (Sorry for my bad english i'm french)
I have used Inovate afr gauges on other cars without any issues but my sensors was more far from the turbo. What downpipe are you using? Are you still catted?
The STI was catted at the time of this video, had the exact same issue with a brand new gauge on my BRZ and the sensor was farther back. Ive heard of people installing switches to them with mixed results. And no worries at all!
When it stays 14.7 no matter what means the sensor isn't connecting btw. Innovate is cheaper and way better, it has error codes and you can actually cal
innovate is as big a POS as the AEM, I have an innovate and its been garbage out of the box, multiple sensors etc, still junk, STAY AWAY FROM INNOVATE! Look online there are pages of complaints, count yourself as one of the few lucky ones,
@@WolfHausMotorwerks you probably did something wrong or bought it from some kid named Eric... Just by looking at your channel you don't seem to be a tuner so you're experience in tuning probably isn't any good
They shoudlent go out in the first week of using them, have had multiple sensors from AEM do this, always replaced with $30 Amazon Bosch sensors that have worked for 2+ years
I posted as Goldie to explain the setup I used if anyone does the o2 idea you will have to tune it everytime the engine light comes on with a tuner or just weld the bung 18"in from the cylinder head but, you might have pinched or kinked the harnesses that might be messing with it or a bad sensor then....
My issue ended up being the sensors that AEM kept sending me, eventually ended up just buying a sensor in Amazon and splicing the harness to the new sensor to make it work lol
Smeedia do you have a video or wiring diagram which color Aem sensor wire splices to the new sensor you got from Amazon have a replacement coming but not confident on the replacement either, thanks
Did you make a video splicing the sensor to the AEM gauge? I'm experiencing the same issues and want to try what you did but I can't seem to find a video. I just want to be able to splice the two together correctly! Thanks for any input!
I'm having the same problem with mine. Two consecutive sensors lasted 10 seconds before the went bad. Same shit, 14.7 and then all dashes seconds after start up. Going with another company besides AEM. Their sensors are junk! When they still used Bosch Sensors they were great. Now its Chinese Junk DOA sensors.
@@Smeedia Why did you have to splice the wires? It looks like the sensor should plug right up - The Amazon add says it's supposed to fit the AEM. Each 4.9 sensor has a calibration resistor built into it's connector, so the connector that comes on the sensor not supposed to be eliminated. Just trying to understand where you spliced things??
LMAO yo i dont mean to laugh but IM GOING THRU THE SAME SHIT, and.. my gauge did the sAME SHIT. like itll start at 14.6-7 and then BOOM - - - and then u rev it, itll go down like it works, and u let it idle, 18.2-3-4 and then - - - again lol. Thanks for the help this sensor also worked for me! 👊🏼
@@Smeedia Mine just died as well, just ordered this sensor.
@@Smeedia what bosch sensor you get? I just ordered an aem gauge with a bosch sensor

I just cleaned my sensor… it worked for a bit &’ then stopped working. This is bunk af right in the middle of logging back and forth w my tuner
Had mine for 3 years no issues
Just installed mine first day was working fine for a day and stays stuck on 14.5
Newb question here. Why would you run a AFR gauge, doesnt the AP give you that information already?
The accessport reads upstream AFR off of the header compared to the downstream on the downpipe
@Smeedia I'm learning still but isn't it also becausethe aem uego is a wideband and the stock is narrow band?
Stupid question but what’s the point if the STI already have a boost gauge in the middle screen just curious
A direct feed or source is more accurate, the ECU doesn't have to decode data or information then said it to the OFD
so I have an issue with my wideband guage maybe you can help. It doesn't display all the digits. example 14.7 as 14 and a part of the digit. Any suggestions?
Which gauge did you get? 🙏

I know this is a late response but my afr gauge isn’t even lighting up when i start my car. But once i press the right button on the gauge itself it’ll start reading “O2, afr” and something else i forgot, then when i press the left one it’ll read “donE” and shut back down
I’m not sure what the problem is.
But my boost gauge seems to be working fine
I’m having the same issue
Were you able to fix the problem?
I’m having the same exact problem with my AEM sensor I installed a couple weeks ago. Pegged out to lean
Bad sensor. Annoying problem but an easy fix
Its thr O2 sensor, one one of my more recent videos with my BRZ i had the exact same issue
Smeedia sweet, thanks for the reply man. Hopefully they replace mine as it only ran for 10 mins
Same thing happened, 10 min and the sensor died 🙃
Smeedia gotta love aem
Thwyre going to make you send the whole gauge back to which is the annoying part. 🙃
My AFR reads 8.08 for roughly 15 minutes after initial start up, reads correctly for about 10 minutes then goes back to 8.08 😅
Mines reading exactly like yours. What did you come up with?
Swap the sensor 🙏 replaced mine with one off of Amazon

Happened to me as well. Was a bad sensor
Did you end up finding the issue? I have a brand new aem afr then was good then - - - :(
Bad AFR sensor out of the box 😭 ended up getting a replacement off of Amazon
@@Smeedia Forsure bro thank you 🙏🏻
Did you try and run calibration settings
I bought a brand new one, tested it out before install it worked. Installed it all, now it flickers once before turning it on and that's it... power and ground are good
Make sure the electrical connectors are fully seated on the backside
Gloves? For electrical?
I thought that when using a new gauge you had to leave the sensor out, let it cycle, then install it
Arnaldo Graceski you can calibrate it like you said or aem has pre tuned it from their factory ready to go its either way... They make it have a calibration test if you have issues with it or if its dirty and you re clean it and the gauge is not showing the numbers accurately etc...
@@goldieberry9693 you can't cal the aem uego, it is what it is
I’m going through this right now did you ever resolve this his problem or did you just get a hole new unit
I figured it out on mode keep Clicking till it says recal and click sel and then switch back to afr do it few times and Boom 💥💪🏻 Hope it helps u all
What if ours have no damn buttons on the gauge ? LMFAO
@@poohnay16then we’re fucked
Would you try the pro sport gauges? This video making me scared of getting aem ones lol
It was just the sensor and ive never used prosport before so I'd have to read some reviews
Yeah they are pretty fool proof just run a good Bosch wideband 02
i never have problem with PLX ones i change to AEM on my rex and the problems start
what the hell is wrong with AEM if this is a consistent problem..I just got one installed on my bike and its doing the same exact thing..Im going to write to company about getting a replacement sensor and take it from there.
On start-up mine will only say "test". No numbers. nothing else.
Can bad fuel be the source too for not reading it? All I get is 3 dotted lines but my AP says otherwise.
9/10 times it's thr sensor bad fuel wouldent cause it to read 3 lines
mine is doing it now, did you get any results? stays on full lean.
Ended up swapping to this and been going strong for 3 years 💪
amzn.to/3lWlYDZ
Mine is doing same thing but it worked great for a week are these sensors just garbage or what
Glowshift black series 7 is good not e85 supported though...
Wtf r u even talking about
Yup just one of the many commenter here.. installed worked for 3 days than permanent lean when car runs but brake clean and a rag reads full rich
I've had pretty good success with Bosch replacements on Amazon.
Did you figure it out the problem? What’s the part number of the AEM?
The link to the gauge should be in the description, but it was the sensor, ended up having to buy one off of Amazon and splice the pigtail from AEM sensor onto it to get one working

Hey man , my boost gaige just stays in " sens" and i bought another sensor and it still says " sens " what could it be ??
At that point I'd contact AEM whenever I see that it's normally a gauge issue
@@Smeedia thanks man , im always learning things in your channel , keep it up 🤙
T was the sensor the entire time. Bosch sensors are junk
Is there any replacements for it besides Bosch?
Hahaha, this is funny.............I had an Innovate AFR gauge, it worked for 9 months. Warranty had run out so I just bought the AEM unit without a sensor knowing the sensors are the same for both. Guess I was wrong. Gauge goes to full lean when you turn it on, which means no sensor is connected. Different sensors......Edit... no no no, I just put a lighter to the sensor and it works. The problem I had was there was a bung extension and the sensor wasn't reading.
Meaning the sensor wasn't deep enough? I may grind my bung down. I had to weld it
@@chuckheinch mine has done the same thing, worked perfect for like 10 min, then 3 dash, hondata says its pushing 3.9 volts entire time. weird thing about mine is that it starts at 14.7 while warming up im assuming then it actually ticks through all the numbers nearly to 3 dashes. my bung was the same the entire time so I dont think its the bung or it wouldnt have worked perfect for 10 min imo
@@pitbullhaven it was a bad 02 sensor. Had to pull it completely out and send it all back.
My boost gauge is flat lined tried different fuses. The connections are good and it is sharing power to the afr gauge...idk about aem I really wanted to stick with aem since I want everything to be the same... pretty pissed haha
Had the same issue with my last car it's the sensor 100% really annoying to have to deal with. They make you send the entire gauge back to them 🙃
Smeedia it really sucks bro paying all that money and have problems... but when it works out the feels is almost unbeatable lol
My afr eam worked only a week and stuck on 10.6

Just the sensor everytime, probably to close to the turbo or placed wrong, I've done about 4 sensors in 6 years bosch lsu 4.9
Mine is doing the same thing, haven’t had it on the car 6 months yet.
Seems to happen fairly frequently with the AEM Sensors 😖
@@Smeedia did aem send you replacements for free or did they still charge you?
I bought a replacement off of Amazon and it's been going strong for 2 years. I've had multiple AEM ones go out so I have up on those sensors lol
I have a problem also , always worked and now it works couple of seconds and than it goes to three dashes ? Any help...
Sensor is bad, 🙃 had the same issue with 3 sensors
@@Smeedia Brz Catted also?
Catless on the BRZ
@@Smeedia the sensor you've used on the BRZ was a brand new sensor too?
Mine does the same thing. New install can't get it to work.
Those AEM Sensors seem to just have some quality issued out the box
When it stays 14.7 no matter what means the sensor isn't connecting btw. Innovate is cheaper and way better, it has error codes and you can actually cal
Good to know, AEMs customer support was pretty quick to fix the error but still had to go through 4 sensors lmao
@@Smeedia ouch, yeah I've had innovate for like 5 years and only had to change sensors, buy one from oriellys with a lifetime warranty lol
innovate is as big a POS as the AEM, I have an innovate and its been garbage out of the box, multiple sensors etc, still junk, STAY AWAY FROM INNOVATE! Look online there are pages of complaints, count yourself as one of the few lucky ones,
@@WolfHausMotorwerks you probably did something wrong or bought it from some kid named Eric... Just by looking at your channel you don't seem to be a tuner so you're experience in tuning probably isn't any good

I get "L1.84" on mine.... should have bought an autometer.
Has nothing to do with AEM bro sensors go out on all wide bands its normal if you have it long enough or if you go e85.

It’s usually the sensor.
music makes it hard to focus on what hes saying
I posted as Goldie to explain the setup I used if anyone does the o2 idea you will have to tune it everytime the engine light comes on with a tuner or just weld the bung 18"in from the cylinder head but, you might have pinched or kinked the harnesses that might be messing with it or a bad sensor then....
My issue ended up being the sensors that AEM kept sending me, eventually ended up just buying a sensor in Amazon and splicing the harness to the new sensor to make it work lol
Smeedia do you have the wiring diagram for splicing
Smeedia do you have a video or wiring diagram which color Aem sensor wire splices to the new sensor you got from Amazon have a replacement coming but not confident on the replacement either, thanks
I dont 😪 i need to make another sensor though for the STI so ill make a video on it
Did you make a video splicing the sensor to the AEM gauge? I'm experiencing the same issues and want to try what you did but I can't seem to find a video. I just want to be able to splice the two together correctly! Thanks for any input!
After my motor swap, my gauge reads only Sens...
Typically I've seen that if the sensor harness is not fully plugged into one another
Why not just change the obvious thing first? THE SENSOR.
Hi if i'll go to autozone/o reilly's what should i say for the sensor? Coz they asked me what kind of car? Lol
I would order one off of Amazon, nit sure the quality on theirs but it's a lambda 4.9LSU
