Why does nobody realizes how important was the gesture of Hatori Hanzo? He didn't just "came out of retirement". He broke a promise he made to himself out of regretting his creation being a tools to kill.
Thats true
It's true. "Coming out of retirement" is such a belittling and, frankly, Western way of viewing it. Breaking an oath you made is nowhere near "coming out of retirement".
To be fair, they said that before he revealed he made that promise and they didn't add their reaction to that scene is this video.
True it’s was obvious he didn’t make that decision lightly
I mean people break their words and vows all the time over here and you expect them to fathom the depth and meaning of a blood oath? 😂
As a few people have mentioned, the chef is played by legendary Martial Artist and actor, Sonny Chiba. Sonny Chiba's son, Mackenyu Maeda, is currently starring on Netflix's live action adaptation of One Piece as Roronoa Zoro.
Whattttttt!! That’s insane
really this is a diamont fact .
How far the apple has fallen from such a respected tree
El Paso is a big ass city im from there lol it’s way more than tumbleweeds
@@MarioBario the one piece series on Netflix was highly acclaimed and very successful.
I was roughly 9 years old when i watched this. It had changed my life from there, it’s one of those movies where you put it on and enjoy , no matter how many times you have seen it. I’ve watched these movies roughly over 50 times by now.
... 9?!
@@Chromium457 I had a weird childhood and not enough adult vision 😭😂
@@Chromium457 9's fine. My parents took me to see Terminator 2 when I was, like, 4. Bought me the Mortal Kombat games, too. They were a-ok with me seeing graphic violence, but they always covered my eyes during sex scenes.
Sonny Chiba is the weaponsmith. He was a Kung fu action star in the 70s. The yellow jump suit is iconic Bruce Lee from his last film that came out after his death. Quentin loves that periods cheesy over the top gore lol.
his son Mackenyu plays Zoro in One piece tv series
Gordon Liu, another Kung Fu action star (The 36 Chambers, Master Killer, Fist of the White Lotus) plays the head of the Crazy 88 and Pei Mei (the villain he fought in Fist of the White Lotus) in part 2.
Sonny Chiba from “The Street Fighter”! If you know you know!
karate, not kung fu
Kung Fu is Chinese, Karate is Japanese
The black and white fight scene was cause he needed to to keep the movie rated R. Unrated version is in full color
But the blink to re-initiate full color is really cool. If you have to be censored, that's a rad way to do it.
The yellow jumpsuit was an homage to Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon which is why even when this movie first came out people had a familiar feel about how she was dressed during that entire scene.
Sorry, but got it a tad wrong. Bruce wore a similar suit (different shade of yellow/orange-ish) in his unfinished movie "Game of Death", not in Enter the Dragon. Unfortunately, he passed away during the filming and that suit was the last on-film costume he wore before leaving this world. Rest in peace, Lee Jun Fan.
Yeah, wrong.
There's nothing like a good 'ole revenge heist (complete with a hit list) to make this film one of Tarantino's best.
You are right. It’s nothing like a heist.
Well, there’s a reason why she has a hit list on those people. Can you blame her?
Quentin Tarantino is one of the rare directors. He is not people pleaser. He makes films way he wants and if people don't like them, he doesn't care. He is uncompromising visionary and Kill Bill 1 & 2 are incredible Master pieces when it comes mixing style, music and east with west. This I think is Tarantino in his purest form. My personal fave is Once Upon time Howllywood but this is my personal #2 in Tarantino films.
This was originally intended to be a single film but the length prevented it. Part 2 is not as violent but you get more backstory. The Sushi Chef is Martial Arts Legend Sonny Chiba. The head of the Crazy 88's Johnnie Mo (bald head with black Kato Mask) is Martial Arts Legend Gordon Liu. Gordon also plays Pei Mei in Part 2. We finally get to seew Bill in Part 2. I have met Uma Thurman twice (Woodstock, NY and Rhinebeck, NY). A tall and beautiful woman. I asked her about Kill Bill. She said that she was hurting and badly bruised during much of the shoot. She did most of the stunts except for the most dangerous ones. Those stunts were done by the great stuntwoman Zoe Bell. Zoe did the dangerous stunts for Lucy Lawless in the Xena TV series. She is many of Quentin's movies including Django Unchained and Death Proof (where she plays herself).
Thank you for posting this. I was about to write the exact same thing.
Part 2 does have a violent bit with the fight between the two women in the caravan
I often forget that Uma in real life isn't an action martial arts type of person. So it took a lot of courage to take on such a physically demand role even if the more dangerous stunts were done by a stunt woman. No actor accept for someone like Jackie Chan does all the stunts. I think I read that finally fight scene took over a month to film.
part 2 might be my favorite just for the Pai Mei scenes
@@swish007 So true! His scenes were the best of the entire series.
this is LITERALLY my favorite movie of all times, I must've seen it over 50 times
Really glad you hit on Uma Thurman's phenomenal non-verbal acting in this movie. She should have been nominated Best Actress.
4:40 "That's awesome" proceeds to pull out a matching drink
Thanks for your reactions! Btw, the actor, Sonny Chiba, who played the sword maker-sushi chef, "Hattori Hanzo" (as others have mentioned), in his prolific career also played the historical/fictional Japanese samurai character Hattori Hanzo in the 1980 Japanese TV series, Shadow Warriors, and Tarantino knew all about that.
Also, the scene where 'Black Momba' is fighting the Crazy 88 yakuzas, and when most of the rest are dead is left with a young boy who she spanks with her kitana and tells to go home to his mother, that scene is a homage to a pair of scenes that largely bookend Akira Kurosawa's classic jidaigeki movie, Yojimbo (1961) - that was remade by Sergio Leone as A Fistful of Dollars (1964), the first of his spaghetti Western trilogy (that, A Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly). Another crossover from Japanese sword movie to Western, as was Kurosawa's Seven Samurai to The Magnificent Seven. So Tarantino is mixing them all together (a Western samurai gangster movie with anime in Kill Bill Pt 1) rather than having just the one genre inspire another in a different genre. And when it comes to cultural genre mixing and homages to past iconic moments, just wait for Kill Bill Pt 2!
If you ever take a trip to Japan, the restaurant that they modeled the Crazy 88/ O ren fight location from is in the Roppongi area of Tokyo and is called Gonpachi. There is a sushi restaurant upstairs and a bar/ grill restaurant on the ground floor where they have everything from pizza to soba and yakitori. The scene was shot on a sound stage in China but Tarantino had visited Gonpachi on a trip to Japan (it may have been a location scouting trip for this movie) and liked the look so much he made his own version for the movie. I got to eat there earlier this year and even though it was busy, it was worth the wait time. They play O ren's intro theme "The House Of Blue Leaves" over the PA system when one of the guests has a birthday and they bring out a piece of cake for them. They didn't have the roof access open so I can't confirm if they have a garden on the roof like you see in the film or not but my bet would be that they don't.
The band playing in the scene is a real Rockabilly group from Japan called the 5-6-7-8's . Tarantino heard them playing when he was in a shop in Tokyo just before jumping on a plane back to the states and asked the shop owner if he could buy the CD so that he could hear more of their music and also be sure to remember their band name so that he could contact them for the film. Apparently, the CD wasn't for sale at the store but the cashier was nice enough to sell him their own personal copy that had been playing in the store.
Yo, Flash... you mentioned you already watched Reservoir Dogs and Inglorious Basterds. How could you possibly skip Pulp Fiction?! You need to get to it immediately!
This one is a masterpiece as far as I'm concerned. It masterfully combines spaghetti western with martial arts.
I've never seen a movie like this where it felt like there were truly no scenes that could be skipped over.
Loved your reactions, very authentic! I wish I could see this movie for the first time all over again. Brace yourself for Kill Bill 2, you won't be disappointed, I promise!
Same
I love this reaction. It's a favorite movie of mine. Strongest woman lead, and earned thru out the movie
Volume 1 and Volume 2 were actually meant to be one longer film. Watch Volume 2 as soon as you can.
Also add Pulp Fiction and Django to you list of Tarantino films to watch.
the D is silent...im here when he shows up :)
Inglorious Bastards needs to be on the list too but those two are my preferred watches.
The sushi chef was played by Sonny Chiba, who appeared in Storm Riders and Fast and Furious 1 and 3. Get to Kill Bill Vol. 2 quickly! 🤣
Sonny Chiba is one of the most popular Japanese actors. He starred in a myriad of Ninja and Samurai films back in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, portraying the likes of timeless Japanese folklore heroes like Miyamoto Musashi and Hattori Hanzo, among many others.
Sonny Chiba was only in F&F 3: Tokyo Drift. Was not in the first one.
The inspiration for the 88s crew came from Sympathy for the Underdog. So good!
This movie is soooo good! It completely changed the way I look at movies as a young teen.
Yuen Woo Ping is the guy who did the fight choreography for this and the sequel. Tarantino was a huge fan of Woo-Ping’s work in Hong Kong and specifically wanted one of the best Asian action directors to make Kill Bill feel authentic and cool. You might recognize his fight choreography in the Matrix.
I think the reason these are my favorite Tarantino films is because of the score. The storyline is amazing, but the music combined with it is as close to perfection in a film as you can get. The music fits perfectly with every scene, which is really hard to do.
i love these movies. i love how the exposition never feels like a plot dump, and the music is iconic
It's not the pain of a sword wound that is bad. It is that it tears. An expert swordsman can slash precise muscles and parts of the body so that when the wounded warrior moves the wound tears like paper and grows more severe.
Woah
Yeah, Sonny Chiba was the sushi guy.. Very Famous Marshal Artists in his own right!!! An one of my All time Favorites.. A true marshal artist.
Quentin Tarantino allways choses the film music from his private vinyl collection😎
I saw this in the theater the weekend it came out. I was working road construction in Wyoming at the time after my divorce had just started. What shocked me, being Wyoming, I was one of only 5 people in the theater watching this. Half of the other four were blown away and the other two were oblivious to the subtilties of this film.
The katana ass slap is also one of my favorite scenes lol
With how gory this is, I loved every cringing, clasping of hands and looking away from the screen you guys did. Great reaction!
I remember the first time I watched Kill Bill Vol. 1 with my family, it was still back from the physical movie rental days. We only rented the first movie, and as soon as Bill revealed the plot twist in his last line, we rushed back into the movie rental to grab Vol. 2!! Lol good times
All the violence and drama keeps you at the edge of the seat, and then that twist/cliffhanger (Twisthanger?) about the kid at the end slaps you so hard you fall off it. Probably the best Tarantino-moment for me.
This is my favorite movie since I was a child. It never gets boring
Oren's origin story was pulled from The Story of Lady Snowblood. It's a tragic story about a lady assassin. It's definitely worth a watch. I loved the music such as the music when she when The Bride is flying to Japan (The Green Hornet theme by Al Hirt, the tie- in music is from the 70's show Ironside)
The actor you didn't recognized is late Sony Chiba, legendary 70's japanaese martial actor.
This is my favorite movie tied with It's a wonderful life❤ thank you!!!
Adorable, cute, beautiful, fun is how I describe Agor.
Oh and Kristen too.
😂❤
@19:32 there is an advertisement for Red Apple cigarettes, the same brand Butch asked for in Pulp Fiction. I’ve seen Kill Bill dozens of times and never noticed that until today.😁
The actor playing Hattori Honzo was Sonny Chiba (RIP)
Loved your reaction. So excited for you to watch Kill Bill 2 especially the battle between the Bride and Elle
Uma apparently didn't get along with Daryl Hannah, but she loved working with Chiaki Kuriyama.
So their fights were authentic
I can believe that 😢
If you pay attention, there are 3 types of blood stylization throughout the movie. An interesting mix I think.
I loved this movie back when I first saw it ..... but now I think I can appreciate this cinematography better
Tarantino loved Japanese cult Gangster and 'Pinky Violence' films of the 60's and 70's. Many were great revenge films and that's where the fountain spurting blood comes from. Tarantino also loves Spaghetti Westerns. Kill Bill 1 & 2 pays homage to both genres and some of the songs are straight from so some of those films.
I live in El Paso Texas!!! Born and raised! It was cool hearing you were born in El Paso :)
This is one of the greatest films ever made. I've watched it a dozen times, both parts.
The sword smith, is the real life father of the Mackenyu, the actor of zorro in One Piece.
I saw this in the theater and it was an experience! Watched it so many times over the years so I know it by heart 😂
Uma Thurman & Quentin came up with this concept of ,The Bride, during the filming of Pulp Fiction (she was in that as well)
Quentin Tarantino is a master!!!
You two were perfect reactors to this movie. We got the excitement and the disgust haha. I'm looking forward to volume two. You should see Pulp Fiction for sure. I missed Kristen's translations of the un-subtitled Japanese.
My favorite Tarantino movie, the animation part is my favorite also the music is so so good in this movie
Kill Bill is my favorite too! It's the first Tarantino film I saw as a kid and it had a lasting impression on me. The music is amazing and I love Uma Thurman so much as The Bride.
The yellow suit is homage to Bruce Lee in Game Of Death
One of my favorites. I can't wait to see your reaction to Volume 2.
Remember, just walking into this movie theater because the actual movie that I wanted to see was City of God but it was sold out and so we picked this movie only because it said it was from Quentin Tarintino and I remember watching that last part when he said your daughter still alive and I said no don’t ended there…. Then having to wait for volume2 for it to come out. That yellow outfit that the bride is wearing, there’s an homage to Bruce Lee’s Game of Death.
The Producers with Uma, matthew Brodrick and Nathan Lane. It's great.
All of Tarantino's films are great, but my favorite will always be Pulp Fiction. I was 20 when it was released, and it absolutely blew my mind like no other movie I had ever seen before (or since, really.) I definitely recommend watching that one after KB2.
I was 14 when I saw it in the theater. Next to my parents, who knew nothing about what we were about to watch other than it had John Travolta and Bruce Willis. Talk about a mind-blowing experience… I lost my shit after Pumpkin and Honey Bunny when Miserlou hit, but I wasn’t sure if I was even allowed to laugh. 😂
Great reaction. You externalized what I was thinking when I saw this movie.
16:50 Sonny Chiba ❤❤❤
It’s great the you two don’t have a prejudicial idea how Quentin Tarantino makes movies. Looking forward to any other QT films you react to.
The Western music in part 2. This one had some music from Japanese cult films of 60's and 70's.
O-Ren's sidekick, Go Go Yubari (the girl in high school uniform), was played by Chiaki Kuriyama. Prior to Kill Bill, she was also in the first Battle Royale movie (which you guys should do a reaction to).
The best thing about this movie & Tarantino "comic book" way of doing movies.. if u go back to pulp fiction Uma Thurman character was playing the wife who show about being part of 5 person team killing force & her character was deadly with knives & swords..low & BEHOLD.Kill Bill..that dude Quentin is A BEAST n da movie world
It's only after Vol 2 does the "Trix are for kids." line make a lot more sense. That its not just a random refernce.
Trix-Kid
BeaTRIX KIDdo.
16:01 In John Wick 3 there is a character who is an homage to Hattori Hanzo.
I watched this film like 5 times....can't believe you never watched it. Good thing is, Tarantino's films are timeless.
Great reaction - my memory of watching this is special - I saw it in an arthouse Hong Kong cinema, near the Stanley Kubrick bookshop - in the HK version, the black and white sequence was actually in full color, and at the end Uma chopped off that French lady's OTHER arm, too - in the cinema lobby, on the TV screen, I saw for the first time the first trailer for Return of the King, which we were all still waiting for - that trailer that combined all 3 films, and I stood there frozen in the lobby for half an hour, watching it play over and over again - the sensory overload of the film merged w my memory of HK
- re the pastiche, I especially got a strong sense of 70s Japanese cinema - Sonny Chiba-type movies, w that flowing choreography and camerawork (plus of course Chiba's cameo here), all those fetishized samurai swords in a modern setting - and the spirit of Tokyo B-movie queen Meiko Kaji hovers over this film like a Greek muse - she sings the closing song, which is from her Joshu Sasori Female Prisoner series, and O-Ren's kimono look is clearly modeled on Lady Snowblood
- this film was a jarring experience - seeing the first images of it about a year before, it was hard to envision something like this played straight - the colors and film-making scream camp - and then the tone plays directly against that - what Gary Oldman might call "a delicious cocktail" - and the jumbled timeline really feeds into that - yes, it was almost like a Pulp Fiction-like momentous experience, tho that came more from the combination w the environment, whereas w Pulp it was the film alone that generated that impact
- my favorite moment is O-Ren's entrance into her club - the way that's shot, I got the sense that all Tarantino's films are in some way re-playing his own high school experience - I think he was bullied in high school, and navigated his way out of it via his verbal wit - and grew to idolize the bullies, wishing he was like them - and so in his films we see these glamorous thugs who act like they're in high school, w the very specific social codes and dynamics of high school (the surly indifferent slouch of O-Ren's entourage, even the bubble gum!) - the capacity for force is what makes you "fit in" in his world; it's what counts as "cool"
- I will say I didn't like the way that schoolbus child sequence was handled - Tarantino was aiming for some ambiguous quality that rang false for me
- Uma Thurman is quite a phenomenon - I saw her chatting w the audience after a stage performance, and she has a spectacularly beautiful use of language that seems to come effortlessly to her - I'd love to see her writing or directing something - in this film I actually felt Daryl Hannah seemed more suited for the lead role, but in the sequel I realized the unique quality Uma was bringing - also, Uma is greater than any other actor at playing a character who envisions herself as existing in a frame, like in a portrait - her greatest performance is in Henry and June, just magnificent - she's also the best screen Aphrodite, and this quality is very well used in Pulp Fiction
My favourite of the Tarantino films, including Vol 2! Great movie choice and awesome reactions ❤
Absolutely amazing stunts in this movie from Uma Thurman's stunt double, Zoe Bell.
Other Quentin Tarantino films include Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill Vol 2, Death Proof, Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. His writing credits include True Romance, Desperado and From Dusk til Dawn
Hatori Hanzo was played by Sonny Chiba. He was a great martial arts star himself and now his son stars as Zorro on "One Piece. "
GoGo was also in Battle Royale. So rough childhood.
Still remember watching this as a kid. The animated portion really awaken/reinforced my love for anime.
That Daryl Hannah from splash and steel magnolias.
The Kill Bill films are my favorite QT movies!❤
This was such a great mivie, one of my favourite, also , Volume 2 ❤
The "Trix Are For Kids"™ thing makes more sense after you watch volume two.
What does it mean??
@@liiziegarcia2360- Trix and Kid are part of The Bride’s real name. If you pause and look closely, her name is on the airplane tickets.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that randomly talks about how much they love Lucy Liu for 5 minutes whenever they see her in a movie
Watch every film by Quentin. They are all amazing in their own ways. I used to not like Jackie Brown, but now I love that one too. He is true filmmaker, and sadly he's one of the last.
Many Texans would deny that El Paso is part of Texas, since it is closer to New Mexico than any city in Texas. That said, it is definitely more than tumbleweeds. The part I've seen is mostly city and spread over a very large area.
The yellow outfit was from Bruce Lee in Game of Death. The music from that scene with the trumpet was from the Green Hornet TV series with Bruce Lee
Love this movie! Hope you do part 2!
My favourite movie
❤❤❤same
o-ren told the bride she wouldn't last five minutes in a fight. the entire fight scene was 4:59
One of my favorite films
The best cliffhanger ever! 😁😁😁
That chef is...Sonny Chiba! Look him up!
I remember seeing this film when I was 17. It was the first time I saw a Tarantino film I could see on my own.
Then I had to wait a full ass year to see part II. 😂😂😂
But I might be biased for that reason. This film (and I include part II as part of this film. Some madmen will tell you I and II are different films 😅). This is his best film. Andrew, you are spot on with the writing in this film. Yes!
Kristin, I love that you knew when the translations were off and also you pointing out the color pallet. You guys are GREAT! Gonna watch your next reaction right now. ❤
I'm excited for Part 2!
I really wanted to see their reaction to Lucy Liu's speech after she cut dude's head off.
There’s a lot borrowed from everything like The Psychic to Goke Body Snatcher From Hell, but the biggest well this draws from is the EXCELLENT Lady Snowblood.
Oh and the “Name’s Buck” line is from Tobe Hoopers misbegotten little scuzzfest Eaten Alive and Buck is played by none other than a super young Robert Englund.
The Sword Maker names, the guy you recognized. Gordon Liu
(36 Chambers) And Sonny China. Both Legends
in pulp fiction uma talked about Fox Force Five as a movie she tried out for . kill bill is fox force five
Great movie, the bride vs the krayzie 88, the Bodyguard, and the school girl GoGo was 🔥 🔥 🔥 I liked the switch from color to black and white and that's kuz it would've been too much Rated-R. The kool yellow and black Bruce Lee leather suit was 🔥 🔥
I love the Kill Bill: Volume 1 soundtrack and bought it after watching it.
Go Go was played by Chiaki Kuriyama, who wore the yellow jumpsuit in Battle Royale. The iconic yellow jumpsuit was worn by Bruce Lee in Game of Death.
To appease the movie rating gods, when The Bride fights the Crazy 88, Tarantino switched to B/W so as not to get an NC-17 rating,
Btw, Sonny Chiba, actor for Hattori Hanzo has a son, who's playing Zoro in the Live Action One Piece. Phenomenal talent.
4:25 - That's Beyonce's car (from Lady Gaga's "Telephone" music video).
Love the reaction. Love u both.
Ok 2 things. About the sword on the plane. It wad 2003 and she was flying out of Okinawa to Tokyo, not the US. There were different regulations. And about the suit, it is a tribute to Bruce Lee "Game of Death". He wore a similar one in the film. It did not originate from this film.
She also has it on the plane at the end, when she is presumably flying to Pasadena to kill Vernita Green. It’s just a stylistic choice by Tarantino. You could not really carry a functional katana on an airplane in 2003. You cannot even possess a sword in Japan without special permission.
24:30 if only the TMNT live reboots would been as bloody and violent as this movie, those woud made billions on theaters 🤪👍👍
