Since the unprecedented deluge started last week, at least 85 people have died and more than 150,000 were ejected from their homes by floods and mudslides in Rio Grande do Sul state. The rains may have abated, but floodwaters continued their assault on southern Brazil, with hundreds of municipalities in ruins amid fears that food and drinking water may soon run out. The disaster, which experts and the government have linked to climate change, has left the state resembling "a scene out of a war," according to the state's governor. Should Brazil gear up for more such freak weather? Palki Sharma tells you.

As an engineer here in Brazil, I can say that no amount of maintenance on the dikes could have prevented this disaster. If there's enough water to overflow the dike, it will inevitably break. They released the water before the rain started so it could hold more and delay the flood, but it was just too much water in a really short period of time. The only viable option would have been to evacuate earlier as Scientists not only predicted this weeks agobut also the rise of water level in Santa Catarina in a 2015 report, which was reiterated in 2019.

@paulocembranelli5514 I'm not lying, but these are 2 different things, the flood prevention system could have helped, but it wouldn't have kept this from happening. And dykes, bridges and dams structures can't hold when overflow and water goes over them, it can be brand new, it will fail.

Climate change not only rise the ocean water level, it also increases the weather catastrophes and make it more regular. Rio Grande do Sul is one of the states that has not preventing plan for decrease the effect of climate change, but it will be the first one to suffer from it.

The situation got a point we have never seen before. A huge part of the Rio Grande do Sul state is underwater including the 1.5 million inhabitants capital Porto Alegre where even the airport and the downtown are underwater.
So that foreigners understand, this all happened only in a Brazilian state that has an area of 281 km2, our country has more than 8.5 million km2, and the strange thing about all this is that it didn't rain on the border with our neighbors Argentina and Uruguay and in neighboring state of Santa Catarina, some theorists say it is the work of HAARP.

As this hot tropical air advances south, an explosive combination of abundant humidity and a very heated atmosphere is formed, which creates successively strong to intense areas of instability, with excessive volumes of rain.
In addition to these two conditions, El Niño, a meteorological phenomenon that, despite weakening to give way to La Niña in the second half of 2024, still influences the climate in the Southern Hemisphere.
“It is losing strength, but it is still valid. And one of the consequences of this is the high frequency of rain in southern Brazil”, explains Desirée Brandt.
