Great advice! I decided to use a pen name when I self published my first novel. I thought R.B. Willis (initials :)) looked better than using my legal name or my nick name.

Thoughts on using a pen name when more than one author is writing the story? I’m already published under a pen name (which includes my maiden and married names) but I’m working on a separate fantasy fiction work with my friend as a co-author, and I feel including my current pen name along with her name would be too many names to work with 😅 I’d be inclined to use a joint pen name together (as this book will be part of a series), but then that would, as you say, mess with the algorithm and not allow previews fans to find this new work as quickly.
So either way it is a lot of work. Having two authors on the cover can make it look a little busy, but then you can easily promote these books together to your existing audience. Having a joint pen-name could be fun and give you a chance to start fresh. I would say about the partnership, make a plan now when you are super excited and love working together about what will happen when the partnership ends. What happens if one of you passes first? Who gets the rights to the joint books? If you decide to go separate ways will you pull the books for all platforms or let them exist without support from either of you? (Its not as fun to think about this but important to iron out the details.)
I think if I had the opportunity to co-write i'd let both our names be on the cover unless it was a totally new genre for both of us, then I'd do a joint name.

I am thinking about using my maiden name as my pen name since I have been divorced for many many years and don't want that name on my creative material. It's been over 50 years since I used my maiden name. Would that cause any legal issues. I tend to think not but would be interested in your feedback.
I don't see why it would be a legal issue to use your own maiden name as a pen name, unless it is also a famous person's name.

One more thing, I have been searching for someone to format my book. I am writing it in a software called Papyrus Author. I haven't used many of the features , just been writing. Not sure I am confident in my skill level to create a finished product to submit to Amazon. Do you provide this service or know of a legitimate company you could recommend. I have come across a couple that had questionable reviews and I backed away from doing business with them. I'm in my 70s cyber world is sometimes challenging. It can be difficult to know who can be trusted.

No you can start one later. Better to do it sooner rather than later
