    What worked for me is I got in through those matriculant internships, luckily the ASD of the department I was in was not into favouritism but hard work. 8 months later I applied for clerical position that was in my department and got it, a year later my supervisor who was the state accountant left and no one wanted to stay after work to authorise payments I volunteered and the ASD taught me how to do it. When the post became available I applied and because a manager of people who had been there for plus 10 years. In everything if you get an opportunity don’t follow the ones who complain do your best and you’ll go forward

      This is so true, the ones that complain don’t get anywhere. Hard work and putting yourself out there helps in career progression.

      I have been applying for SA jobs for more than 10 years. Updated my CV more than 10 times thought it was the problem. All I get is people said I need to pay them R15k to get the job. These guys from government called me more 5 times to say I need to pay them in order to get the job. The entire system is corrupted based on my experience.

    Hey Jenn… I remember watching this video at the beginning of the year after graduating and aspiring to get a government internship for the year 2023.
    This is definitely one of the I’d watch over and over to rectify and try and follow these steps to help me prepare and lend that internship.
    I’ve now secured an internship at one the government departments I’ve been aspiring to be in and all thanks to God and you Jenn for these videos.
    I’m now preparing to apply for an entry level/ permanent position and I’ll definitely watch these videos to refresh and prepare for what God has for me in 2024.
    I’d like to advice anyone to watch this ladies’ series on landing a Gov Position and interview prep series. I def recommend.
    ❤️❤️
    I will come and edit this comment once I’ve got my permanent position in 2024😂

    Thank you very much. Very informative. I learnt a lot.biggest lesson is that of quality over quantity. Applying for everything being all over the place is draining and will end up destroying one's confidence to apply for jobs be it public or private sector.
    Thank you again sisters

    • @JennNxumalo
      @JennNxumalo  ปีที่แล้ว

      So true, it does something to one’s confidence to be applying for so many jobs but get called no where. Having focus helps a lot.

  • @kekethekoeng
    @kekethekoeng ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Interesting video Jennifer ♥Applying for government posts can be draining sometimes. We're being told to not use our degrees/ diplomas, we will use them to apply once we're within the department. Also hearing that people want bribes and sexual advances is discouraging...
    I got jobs at 2 different departments a few years back, I had handed my CV at the department of labour

    • @JennNxumalo
      @JennNxumalo  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Please use all your qualifications when applying, don’t ever listen to anyone who tells you otherwise. There is no such thing as being overqualified for a job. Focus on putting yourself out there those departments who see your value will open their doors.

    I remember my friend went for an interview and was shocked when people had interview questions with answers

    • @JennNxumalo
      @JennNxumalo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Some people ask around for possible questions when they are called for an interview, but it does not guarantee anything because questions can be different because they are based on the post and are decided on the day if the interview so no one can really know what the question will be before the interview including the panel members.
      The questions that people normally have prepared are just possible questions based on the post and they get them from people who are doing a similar job, but it guarantees nothing.

    Hi Jenn! Lovely content sisi, kaaade siyidinga into enjena. Siyabonga maZwide❤ Question: how do I find out what units there are in a particular government department?
    You made an example that Administration is a core function, so you will find it everywhere. What sources can I use to find out what *other* functions there are? Please help if you can.

    • @JennNxumalo
      @JennNxumalo  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Nomzamo, in departments this is how it’s broken down I’ll start from the top to the bottom, Branches within branches there are Chief Directorates and within chief directorate you find Directorates. The function of each Branch is dependent on what that department deals with. There are common branches in all departments like Corporate Services and Finance here you find HR and Supply Chain, Salaries, and so on. The to understand each department is by going to their website it will have information on each Branch. Also in government as much as we all administrators but it differs with our professions, there are people with Financial background working in Finance, Supply Chain working procurement, Law working in Legal, there are social sciences people, sport science people, economical scientists, strategists and so on. Basically you find every profession in government.

      It’s all about how you write your CV, you must make sure you highlight the important duties you did in your previous job that make you a good candidate. Look for jobs that do not emphasise on relevant work experience to the qualification or to HR.

    Hi Jen
    Do you think people that have connections are more likely to be considered than those who do not have connections in the puplic sector, coz when I think of this it kinder like discourages me to send out my applications sometimes.so is it true ukuthi it's all about who you know?

    • @JennNxumalo
      @JennNxumalo  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As far as I heard in Municipal level yes this may be true. But everyone I know whom I work with did not know have any connections to get into the public sector especially in National departments.
      It is not practical to get in based on connections in National departments because of the recruitment processes. Don’t be discouraged to apply because of street talk that is not true.

      Hi! In a perfect world you are supposed to do an internship or graduate program after your qualification to gain experience in your field. But that is not the reality for many graduates because of unemployment.
      As a graduate focus on applying for entry level positions.

    • @JennNxumalo
      @JennNxumalo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are at the right stage of setting yourself for success. Yes Yes Yes, if you can volunteer anywhere do so, when opportunities come up at your university for student jobs take them, it does not have to be relevant to your qualification, so long as you are exposing yourself to work opportunities that will take you further in future.

    I am a third-year student doing BA in Public Governance with Public Administration and Politics. So I want to ask about what is the possibility of getting a job with a degree only not with Honours because a lot of people said to me I must do an Honour so that I can get a job. I'm really confused about what I must do after a degree.

    • @JennNxumalo
      @JennNxumalo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don’t need honours to get a job, but it does help to stand out a bit, but it doesn’t guarantee getting employment. You can get a job with your degree, just build on your skills while you are studying.

      Hi! Mfundo, how old are you? I would advise you to get in through internship because as much as the post says no experience, the people that normally get shortlisted are people with experience mostly someone with atleast 1yr experience.
      However this is not to say do not apply continue because you may never know when it’s your job. Having an admin certification would help as well.
      But honestly the job market has been crazy I know a lot of people with degrees in Public Admin and experience but they are struggling to get jobs, its hard these days but don’t give up.

    On the experience section, on my first year they gave us a task/Assignment on how to volunteer for 1 day at the shops to gain experience and be able to answer questions based on the assignment that we were given...so is it okay to write it down on my CV?
    In Primary I was selected as a Prefect I was in Grade 7 and to be able to watch grade 3 kids when the teacher was absent or in a meeting. The kids liked me very much much as their class prefect can I add that too.
    In Grade 10 I was selected as a classrep and unfortunately I didn't like it because I was not well confident enough and they disrespected me but I did it until the end of the year. Should I write that down too in my C.V ????

    • @JennNxumalo
      @JennNxumalo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lets say a post needs leadership skills, then you can use that period of your life as an example to show that you have led.
      For your assignment if the job needs report writing skills then you can use that part of having to volunteer and that after you wrote a report, this will go a long way if you did well on the assignment.
      If I may ask are you currently applying for experiential training (internships) or you have passed this stage?

      No it does not matter, so long as it’s a valid qualification in terms of being accredited. But this is something they check if you passed the interview and they do it for all qualifications public or private university.
