    I got mine yesterday. Absolutely in LOVE with it. I just left Nikon after a very long time. Eye AF sold me as I am mostly a portrait photog.

      that and the fully customizable layout sold me. You can hold this camera however you want and still shoot depending on how you set up your buttons.

      Agree EYE AF is a game changer for a portrait photogs. Enjoy your new beast of a camera. Keep getting more to switch to Sony. Once they see/use one they will never go back

      Be sure to also add the Face Detect people and order them on your shoots so that the camera will prioritize focusing on your model/bride/subject 1st even if there are others in the scene. Eye AF + Face Detect ON is amazing, great feature.

    Another superb Sony video covering all the questions one may have. Wish I could afford the A7R3 but still love Sony and all they do. My a6000 and NEX7 are still my main cameras when I go out and shoot. Keep it up Mark! You are one of THE best around.

      I wish I had never sold my NEX7 - loved the tri-navi system and it revived my love of Street Photography after years carrying big heavy DSLRs - it was my Intro to mirrorless. Hell - I even loved the box in came in - such a great way to package a product that showed me the company loved their product as much as they hoped I would love it. :-)

    Traded in my most of my Nikon kit, still got the D5 so thinking a head to head comparison ;) The A7r3 is amazing, mine arrived this week. Already think the Sony is a far better camera system, Eye Af, Gmaster lenses.
    EVF is excellent. The video quality is really good to.

    Hey mark!
    I have been thinking about moving up to fullframe in the future from my Sony A6000. Will the camera still be able to handle high iso,focus fast for birds & such if I use it in APS-C mode with the lenses I have for my Sony A6000 (Sigma 16,Sigma56 & Sony 70-350)? Mainly looking for it to be better than my A6000 until I can afford Fullframe lenses.
    Thanks in advance for any help! :)

    Very informative Mark, thank you. I wondered if you could provide your views on the weather sealing (or lack thereof) and how nervous you are about using it in light rainy conditions? Do you recommend use of a rain cover, or do you feel that the camera can withstand light rain showers?

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I have used A7 cameras since the original A7 and A7R in light rain without problem. I would not use them in heavy rain or on a beach with salt spray without using a protective cover. I have never used cameras that are waterproof in my 30 years of Pro photography. I have never lost a camera to the weather but one from a fall from a motorcycle :-)

    Hi Mark, I am trying to find a good sony full-frame mirrorless camera in my budget (7RIV, A9II, and Alpha 1 are way out of my budget). What would you recommend for a good camera for print material and low light events specifically? If it could also do astrophotography and portraits, that would be great but not necessary. I am leaning towards the 7RIII. I currently have an A9 for sports and an A6400 for video. Thank you.

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the new A7IV offers the best bang for buck in terms of high ISO performance, dynamic range, fast and reliable AF tracking + modern menus and the best movie recording performance of the cameras you mentioned. Check out my A7IV review to see what I think of this camera. If you need higher resolution for very large prints the A7RIII has an excellent sensor but with the older AF Tracking algorithms.

    Hello Mark, I have an A7RIII camera and I was thinking to move to the A7III, most of the time, I usually take portrait and landscape photos, do you think it worth to move it? Is it a huge different between both autofocus cameras or doesn't sense?

      The move to an A7lll from an A7Rlll would not result in any noticeable AF improvements. The move to an A9, however, would be significant.

    Regarding that little grip extender, you can actually just loosen it a few turns and then spin it to the side a little to access the battery, without completely removing it. But yes, like you said, the battery last a long time anyway, so is it really that big of an issue even if you did need to remove it to replace the battery? No....

      Short answer - still subjects, landscape, heavy crop, better lcd screen, 18MP in crop mode (A7R3A)
      Better autofocus tracking, video, even landscape, 14 MP in crop mode and in general everything (A7IV)
      I own A7R3A as I don't do video and I like the leverage of cropping extensively.

    Hi Mark, love you're video reviews very informative, I'm switching from nikon to Sony and don't know too much about the Sony lens line and was wondering if you could recommend a few lens.
    I mainly shoot landscapes and street.

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For landscape look at the two FE 16-35 zooms (f/2.8 GM and the f/4 Zeiss)> if you like shoot ultra wide-angle then look at the FE 12-24 G (you will need a separate filter kit from a company such as nice as this lens does not take screw-on filters. My Favourite lens for Street is the FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA. It is the smallest FE lens Sony makes and is pin sharp from f/8 to f/11 which are the apertures I mostly use for Street.

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you prefer to travel very light when shooting landscape look at using an Ultra Wide-Angle prime. Sony do not make an ultra wide angle prime (yet). I use the manual focus Voigtlander 15mm (although using filters with this lens is problematic) and the Batis 2.8/18 which can take up to two screw-on ND filters without clipping the corners.

    Thanks for the video Mark. One thing that many reviewers have omitted to comment upon and thus I’m not sure of the benefits of having it on this camera, is the ability to pair the camera with a smartphone. Is that feature merely to be able to control the camera remotely via the PlayMemories app, or is it there as a method of transferring images from the camera to the smartphone once again via the PM app?

    • @geekdomo
      @geekdomo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the GH4 and the Sony version is absolutely fantastic for sending to the phone. As far as controlling the phone. I have not found it yet in the PM app. For what I see it looks like it only transfers photos, which it does incredibly fast!

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Some of the options I did not have time to cover in this short review is that I can control the camera from the phone while seeing a preview of what the camera can see, I can transfer JPEGs to the phone for immediate sharing and I can also add the GPS location from the phone to the files on the camera.

    Hi Mark
    I just switched from Canon Dslr to Sony mirrorless A7RIII lately, and i noticed if i press AF-ON button the LCD and the EVF as well shows dizzy noisy picture until i press the expo button then its getting clear. My question is if its normal or not?

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This will depend on a number of other camera settings. If the EVF is set up for a fast refresh rate to track rapidly moving subjects the resolution will drop and the image may appear 'noisy' in low ambient light. If you have Anti-Flicker set to On this will also drop the resolution of the Finder and it should be turned off when you are not using this setting. I have an upcoming 6 day trip dog sledding above the arctic circle in Norway and Sweden. Temps can intermittently hit -40c. Any input on using the camera at these temps? I would love to pack it with me for the trip. Note it would be exposed to these temps for a consistent 6 day period.

      Old Sergeant - I know a photographer who used a camera at these temperatures over extended periods of time to shoot a time Lapse commercial for Hyundai. His solution was to attach heat packs to the camera (the sort of one's sold to put in your pockets to keep your hands warm). It must have worked out for him as the commercial was a big success for Hyundai.

Your video tutorials have been a great help to get me accustomed with Sony system. Now, I have a question for you and if you can clarify it will be great. For wildlife, both birds and mammals, how good a combination is a7riii and 200 600? a7riii gives us the flexibility to leverage the APS-C mode to great use and also to crop, but from AF tracking stand point and low light capabilities stand point will it be good with this pairing.

      Check to see if you have your camera set to adjust exposure in 1/2 stop increments instead of 0.5 EV increments. It is adjusted in the Exposure step menu (tab 10 on my A7RIII). Mark, I'm considering trading my a9 for the a7rIII for a potential trip to Zimbabwe for the additional resolution since I print 30"x50". I am concerned about buffer depth, focus speed, focus tracking, and rolling shutter when using the electronic shutter. The fastest action I have shot is spinner dolphins in Hawaii, but that isn't the norm; birds are normally the fastest moving things I shoot. As an owner of both bodies, if you had to take one or the other on safari, which would you take? Thanks a lot.

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Focus speed and focus tracking is very very good. Buffer is good for 79 Raw images at 8fps (Continuous High). You are not recommended to use the electronic shutter for shooting action due to the effects of shutter distortion - all cameras other than the A9.

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many bird photographers choose the A7Rlll over the A9 if they are not prepared to carry the Canon 600mm F/4

    • @tedmanasa907
      @tedmanasa907 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark, thanks a lot. Why would birders use an A7RIII instead of an A9 if they aren’t carrying around a Canon 600mm f/4? Because panning that focal length creates too much angular motion and therefore distortion with the A7RIII ‘s electronic shutter?

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ted Manasa - they use it because of the freedom to crop more aggressively and they use the mechanical shutter at 8fps (Hi rather than Hi+ as Hi+ is not a live view). Panning with black out between frames makes it more difficult than the A9, which is why many of them use a sight mounted on the hotshoe to help keep the bird in the centre of the frame.

    Mark, what about the AF performance in low light dance photography with flash? I've read that the the AF-assist from flashes are still disabled. :(

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have a problem with AF performance with flash. Most of the time I am using off-camera flash where AF-Assist would be of no advantage. If using Flash on-camera in low ambient light I use wide aperture primes such as the f/1.4 35mm, the f/1.8 55m or 85mm (not the 1.4/85 which has a problem in low light) - this enables the camera to focus when it is very very dark without an AF-Assist lamp. The other option is simply stop down to f/8, choose manual Focus and approximate the distance - no problem. Some photographers rely on auto features that are not really necessary.
