If the whole bushing is ripped and the rack is moving around, you want to replace quickly. Yes, Scotty, that advice holds true for both cars and women.
I own a 2006 Accord Coupe and a 2007 Toyota Highlander. I plan to keep them both forever. Had to change the alternator in the Highlander, otherwise, both have been bullet proof. @@enriqueortiz5440 My sister got lucky with her 2003. Drove it 16 years no issues until the end when the rear blower fan for the A/C went out. My friends 2004 Pilot has over 250,000 miles on the original transmission.
I don’t know, but I had a 05’ Honda Pilot with 268k before I was given an 08’ Highlander with 120k by an elderly relative. I gave the pilot to another family member and it’s still going and pushing 300k. They’ve both got their strengths and weaknesses, but they’re both winners in my book.
I’ve got a base model 01 Tacoma with 275k hard pothole city miles and it runs perfectly. Recently changed the original clutch and the rear main seal while I was at it. I’ve changed the oil semi regularly and neglected it at times. Wheel bearings, calipers, shocks, bulbs, brake pedal sensor, one oxygen sensor and the master cylinder. I cleaned up the maf sensor and the intake. Runs like a dream. I just wish they hadn’t fancied and grown the Tacoma. The price has grown too much. So I recently bought a new base model frontier because it’s nice and simple, just as reliable and much cheaper. I wish I could’ve bought a brand new 1st gen Tacoma though. Honda trucks? They don’t make a truck as far as I’m concerned.
I agree with Scotty about the maintenance on the highlander vs pilot, reason why I say this is that the pilot has a timing belt with an interference motor that honda recomend to be changed every 7 years or 100k miles. If you don't change the belt you run a risk of destroying the engine. The highlander has a timing chain that never needs to be replaced. If you are a type a person that doesn't keep a vehicle very long then it doesn't matter what you buy.
I had a 1989 Honda Civic dx I purchase new in 89 it had 310000 miles on it when someone rear-ended me at a red light and totaled it. Or I believe that Honda was still be going.

Scotty, I've been watching your channel for years and I have to give you thanks and credit. I've learned so much from just watching your channel that when my 2007 Toyota Yaris with 242,000 miles on it broke down, I had enough confidence to DIAGNOSE and FIX IT! My alternator seized up and my serpentine belt broke. I went to the local junk yard and found a wrecked Yaris with a good alternator. I removed it (what a pain) then replaced it on mine with a new serpentine belt. With the (two belts...one broke after the first misdiagnose) and the OEM alternator from the junkyard was less than $60. I saved HUNDREDS of dollars on new parts and mechanics wages. This is the 3rd alternator on the car and the last time I remember it cost me $500 to replace it. Thanks again!
I like the manual transmission in a Honda a lot more than in my Toyita/Scion. Better throws. Slicker. I just ordered a shift kit. See if it makes it nicer to shift. Both are reliable options.
Super Dave we are considering switching to a highlander from our Edge Sport. Love the power and tech in the Ford but long term reliability concerns me.
They're both pretty good, I know people who have older vehicles of all kinds from each brand. Toyotas are not nearly as fun to drive, though. I tested both a Civic and a Corolla, and I hated the Corolla. The interior design was awful, and it didn't handle all that well
Toyota all the way and also better in car design than Honda. Toyota have better engine than Honda. I have Scion XB 2005 and got 250k no problem and 1989 Toyota Camry got 400k no problem. I got 2018 Toyota Camry with 30k no problem with the engine or transmission at all. I sold my 2005 Scion XB 250k and 1989 Toyota Camry for 2018 Toyota Camry and 2020 Toyota Corolla Sedan. People out there always criticized 2018-2019 Toyota Camry transmission have a problem because they dont know how to drive or how to brake in period the engine and the transmission properly. I have no problem at all no hestiation or jerky shifting at all like people complains out there. Toyota Thank you.
My dad was a pharmaceutical delivery and sales and drove Toyota tacoma 2001 ended up getting a free one after 999,980 miles same engine and rebuilt transmission. For our family Toyota for life
Hey Scotty, is a good dream garage: 1) Toyota Highlander (practical grocery getter/people transporter) 2) Toyota Tacoma or 4Runner TRD Pro (fun, off roader truck) 3) Honda Civic/Accord or Toyota Corolla/Camry (compact, daily driver)
One of my friends bought a fairly new Highlander...it had constant moisture problems with condensation continually forming on the windshield. After numerous trips to Toyota over a few years, he ended up getting rid of it!
Many people bring up Honda’s transmission issues, their wide spread major transmission issues were for like three years in the early 2000s, yet no one remembers Toyota’s sticky gas pedal issue (that killed people) for three years about 10 years ago
This is a trend with Toyota fans. They overlook all their faults like Frames that Rotted in Half and the Piston Ring issue. Those are no big deal. But Honda had a couple years of Transmission issues and they are labeled Junk by comparison.
Retired Toyota Svc Mgr here....Both good brands....Honda is a lighter built vehicle - not as solidly put together as Toyota..... Easy to see when you can rack/inspect/repair/recondition them....If you ever notice, you never see Toyota vehicles dosplayed in the used car sections of Honda dealers......2 reasons 1 - Honda forbids it, they don't want the side by side comparison 2 - Toyota owners don't/rarely switch to Hondas.....On the flip side, you will see Hondas on Toyota used car lots....
Being a younger guy, I can't drive a manual. :( I'd love to learn, but I don't know anyone that drives a manual to show me. Plus, it's hard to justify buying even an old beater with a manual just for the sake of knowing.
Just got a 2017 rav4. 2.5 inline 4 cyl., 6 speed transmission, 1 previous owner, no damage or accidents reported. I'm hoping it will last us quite a while.
My brother in law’s company service truck were all 03 Toyota pickup, with 350t or more miles , all are still working fine up to 2018 before they retired all those trucks.
2006 - 2019 Civic chain only ,bought a new one in 2008 [si ] zero issues ,well nearly should say .Drivers sun shield and some crappy spots of paint work .On the wife's Odyssey yeah both ,bought new same year as mine .Tranny rebuild due to zero oil in the thing ,timing belt 2 months back for the first time 245 thousand on clock burns no between every 4 thousand miles .
My 05 grand am had the same 3400 engine. I got rid of it because it became a rust bucket in need of a inner and outer rocker panels, new sub frame, brake lines struts ect. Engine was amazing, got rid of it before 200,000 km
I bought the pilot instead of the Highlander and although I haven't had an issues my wife's Camry seems better built. Given the choice again I would probably get the Highlander.
My mom just bought a brand new 2019 honda accord for $28,000 do u think it was a good buy? And what should we do to keep it running for ever? Any other advice?
Just simply common sense maintenance is all you need to do. Hondas last just as long as Toyotas with rountine maintenance. So change the oil on time, proper tire inflation, clean filter, etc. You do those little things that people so often neglect on their vehicles and you'll get more than enough car for your money. Hondas are legendary for it
@Issa Vibez The transmission problems come from people driving these cars hard and not allowing them to shift on time. I have a 1999 Accord V6 that I've had for 14 years. I've had NO SUCH PROBLEMS with my transmission because I don't floor it like some of these reckless drivers. If you drive it the right way it will last longer and most of them do. As for the oil dilution problems that's only on the Hondas with the smaller 1.5 liter turbo charged direct injection engines. The larger 2.5 liter engines and above do not have that problem. Besides that problem has been rectified because there's a new oil that's specifically made for the engines with the dilution issue. It's the 0W-16 oil. So problem solved, and to avoid it all together just don't buy those turbo charged engines with direct injection in the first place. Either way that doesn't change the fact that Honda is just as a reputable vehicle as Toyota and they have the history to back it
I bought a 2018 Highlander over the 2018 Pilot simply due to Toyota's Aisin 8 speed (reliable) and the 2GR-FKS 3.5 V6, which has a timing chain and port and direct injection (cleaner valves). Honda J35 uses a timing belt and direct injection only (potential for dirty valves).
I had a Toyota that had 270,000 and then I bapt it. Next car was a Mercedes and it didn't even last 180,000 without extra pricey repairs. Went back to Toyota thereafter and I'm currently sitting at 313,000 and still going strongly and smoothly. Can't easily argue with their quality.
I have a Honda Accord 2012 EXL Coupe 2.4L Wow. Got it when it was a year old with 32k miles. Now At 174k I’ve driven this thing up and down the coast. I’ve been good at changing the oil and transmission fluid and I’ve NEVER seen the “check engine” light. This car does have the “leather” arm rests on the door peeling off but otherwise it’s is SOLID in the interior. 2 dogs and all. I do need to do some maintenance here and there but that will lead this car to 300K miles. but I will be doing a inspection this weekend to see what needs to be done but wow. Buy a used V4 Honda and change the fluids and they will be bullet proof
I was in the same boat. We finally chose the Pilot AWD 6sp because we like the way it handles, better AWD system, and bit more room. I didn't have a comfy feeling with 9spd. Probably better deal in the Passport if U ok with it and don't need 3rd row. We posted the Odyssey for sale but everyone changed their mind and ending up selling the newer RAV4. (Before that I had CRV for 11yrs before they went CVT). The Toyotas does have better transmission with the simiulated shifter and I really like it driving up and down in West Coast moutains but strangely I actually feel much better handling curves in my Odyssey. And going 95mph is much more stable in the van as well.
To keep a 92-95 Civic from getting stolen remove the plug in the engine harness under the hood. Its just a plastic plug that doesn't seem to go to anything but it won't start without it. Then just pop it in whenever you need to use it.
I believe Honda and Toyota are so close in quality take your pick. I like the fact that Toyota has tried to stay away from cvt transmissions and turbos. But Honda’s are still great.
I have a crv and a camry.both are incredibly well made cars that handle great.i would choose toyota because the Camry I have has almost 400,000 miles and other than ordinary maintenance and a ac belt.the honda has been in the shop a few times but both run great.
I run the car maintenance TH-cam channel in Korea. I'm always learning such a great ideas on your channel. I hope we have a chance to be together. Thank you.
I drove my 83 Civic hatchback until the wheels came off , that's right 350,000 miles wheels feel off the frame infront of my house engine was still going strong I loved that car to this day only by Honda mowers lawn care and small car
I have a 2013 Rav. A/C died and the heated seats stay on. My 3 years older Accord with 3 times more kilometers not one problem. Hondas are better. Scotty shows his age as only geezers buy Toyotas
Scott, you have subscribers and audience outside the United States. Your suggestions are true in the US. But Japanese car parts are either expensive or not available in Europe or in other continents.
i loved my 97 Isuzu. I must've got lucky. I bought it at a tow auction for $400. Put 1000 into it. drove it from Ca to Ill. The My niece wrecked it. But it was a fun car.
We still have our 98 with 200,000 with a manual transmission looks new and drives new still. It sounds like whoever owned that 2004 didn't take care of it and abused it. ☹
Honda all the way. Remember, they made cars that cught the industrys attention. Acura nsx, honda s2000, acura integra type r, Acura tl type s. Hondas have always been more fun to drive, and have exceptional handling
Failed transmissions on both my Honda Civic at under 75,000. Failed alternator on Acura RDX at under 30,000 miles. Failed power steering pump on one of my aforementioned Civic at 80,000 miles. Never again would I buy a Honda.
I like both Toyota & Honda They are both more reliable than American made cars. I have a Honda crv with 350,000 and I put 500 miles per week on it. If I were to buy a truck it would be a Tundra
Imo, with Toyota you'll get the best value and lowest maintenance costs With Honda, you'll get similar value and low maintenance costs but slightly more performance Just depends on what you prefer You want the absolute lowest cost vehicle, go for the Toyota You want a little more performance with similar value and reliability, go for Honda That's why my current vehicle is a 2012 honda accord exl v6
I've had the hood flip on me while driving. It's definitely startling. It almost makes me want to have hood pins on all of my vehicles, but I don't want to be "that guy".

@@enriqueortiz5440 My sister got lucky with her 2003. Drove it 16 years no issues until the end when the rear blower fan for the A/C went out. My friends 2004 Pilot has over 250,000 miles on the original transmission.

What do you guys think of the 2020 Honda Pilot and the 2020 Toyota Highlander?
So happy you finally mentioned the Chevy Impala Scotty!
Ryan K He then went to the bathroom to wash his mouth out with soap!😂😂😂😂
Joel Spivak The 3800 Impalas before GM (early 2000’s) got bailed out were pretty great. I had a 2001 Impala 3.8 LS just sold it last week
Honda, in my book! '99 Civic going strong! Love that car!
First gen CRV 200,000 mile city drive
97 Honda Civic EX on 280,000+ just had to do minor work on it and still going strong
2008 Tundra 250K miles.
99 camry, 957000kms
2002 Acura TL 367,000
Yea, I had a 93 accord with 350,000 miles and no problems Ever! Until some one stole it

Sweet! I've got a 2012 Civic EX-L with 98,000 miles. Still a baby!
lowlife74 my Honda masters lawn mower just died one day, I changed the oil(or really just put oil in, there was barely any in it) and it started up and runs perfectly
I had an 89 Prelude Si, bought it brand new in 89, put 150k miles on it and sold it in 2002 because it’s basically a 2-seater and I needed a bigger car. Well, the guy I sold it to still drives it in 2020, about 300k miles on it. Doesn’t look so good but original motor and auto trans.

Scotty,
I've been watching your channel for years and I have to give you thanks and credit.
Both are reliable options.
just bought a 2019 Highlander, could not be more happy with a SUV......this thing is solid
Super Dave we are considering switching to a highlander from our Edge Sport. Love the power and tech in the Ford but long term reliability concerns me.
Honda for cars. Toyota for trucks.
Honda for motorcycles.
Depends, that's only if it has a manual then Honda is better if everyone used manuals but no we don't like to have a gear slip in a dying honda
Honda for civics, Toyota for all other models besides the corolla
Toyota for Highlander, Honda for Passport
I just got a 2022 passport and I like the drive but could have used more upgrades
We have a Honda City 2006 model that has 450,000 miles on it. Fourteen years of no problems and my dad drives it to this day.

They're both pretty good, I know people who have older vehicles of all kinds from each brand. Toyotas are not nearly as fun to drive, though. I tested both a Civic and a Corolla, and I hated the Corolla. The interior design was awful, and it didn't handle all that well
I had a 14 year old Odyssey with over 270,000 miles. Wifey has a '91 Accord with over 400,000. Honda has pretty good reliability.

Hey Scotty, is a good dream garage:
1) Toyota Highlander (practical grocery getter/people transporter)
2) Toyota Tacoma or 4Runner TRD Pro (fun, off roader truck)
3) Honda Civic/Accord or Toyota Corolla/Camry (compact, daily driver)
I don’t even need to watch this since I already know what Scotty is going to say!
What was he gonna say
One of my friends bought a fairly new Highlander...it had constant moisture problems with condensation continually forming on the windshield. After numerous trips to Toyota over a few years, he ended up getting rid of it!
I've found that Toyotas age slower than Hondas, especially the paint and A/C. Toyota never failed me.
Hey Scotty, thanks for the video and have a great weekend 👍
Retired Toyota Svc Mgr here....Both good brands....Honda is a lighter built vehicle - not as solidly put together as Toyota..... Easy to see when you can rack/inspect/repair/recondition them....If you ever notice, you never see Toyota vehicles dosplayed in the used car sections of Honda dealers......2 reasons 1 - Honda forbids it, they don't want the side by side comparison 2 - Toyota owners don't/rarely switch to Hondas.....On the flip side, you will see Hondas on Toyota used car lots....
The best anti theft system is a manual transmission, a lot of young kids cant drive one.
But car thieves are mostly adults...
Such a stupid comment.
@@zureai modern problems require modern solutions.
Being a younger guy, I can't drive a manual. :( I'd love to learn, but I don't know anyone that drives a manual to show me. Plus, it's hard to justify buying even an old beater with a manual just for the sake of knowing.
If it's a Honda, an auto is a better deterrent. Most theives target manuals.

The weakest link in Honda's are the bloody timing belts and transmissions.

Honda. Hell, styling alone Honda wins...

Toyota Highlander is superior to the Pilot. It's beautiful also...
For passenger cars Honda is great; for Trucks & SUVs Toyota is the safer choice [ and the cars are good too ] ; that is what I got from this
I was in the same boat.
I see Toyota isn't late with their payments.. 🤣
I have owned both Toyotas and Hondas, In the long run Toyota was much cheaper to maintain than Honda.
I believe Honda and Toyota are so close in quality take your pick. I like the fact that Toyota has tried to stay away from cvt transmissions and turbos. But Honda’s are still great.
