    Last time I dead lifted I hurt my back doing sets of 245 lbs. I was wearing sneakers not, not setting up properly with my feet, grip, taking the slack out, no weight belt, and not driving like in a leg press with my legs. Thank you. I just repped 315 5x after recovering from that injury and it didnt bother me at all. Felt like I could keep going. I was nervous of the excruciating nerve pain in my lower back again, but went for it and I couldn't be happier. I'm planning to be smarter about my deadlifts and continue to use your research to aid me in preventing long term injury. Thanks for all your hard work that has impacted my life.

      2. Just because someone can do something doesn't mean they understand it. Take a good football player vs a good coach.
      3. If you think he's natty and 8th in the world at lifting anything I've got some news for you.
      4. You sound like a hick. I'm not "talking shit". I'm pointing out his intro is crigey and arrogant as hell. A PhD and a big squat have nothing to do with that.

    Dr. Layne Norton is the truth. People can throw shade all they want at the end of the day he's a smart dude with credentials from left to right and a flat out beast. Doctorate degree in nutritional science, world record holding powerlifter, pro-bodybuilder and so forth. I like how he keeps it 100% and backs up his opinion with actual science not just hear say or bro talk. I'm grateful for his programming and I thank him for his dedication. My big 3 lifts are sitting raw right now at 505lbs bench press, 700lbs squat and 750lbs deadlift all from following his advice in the gym along with hard work.

    i don't deadlift anymore, but when i did, i much preferred the touch and go than waiting between reps... i did higher rep ranges (never lower than six, most sets leading up to it in the 8-10 plus range), the thing is deadlifts are HARD and i have only a certain amount of work that my body is capable of in one set... let's say that amount is 20 seconds of work (don't know exactly, never measured)... whether i wait between reps or i don't, i won't be able to work longer than that with the maximum weight i can move... so by going without pause i can get an extra rep or 2 in that set... you don't have to bounce the weight at the bottom... in fact all i do is touch the plates to such a light degree that the weight never stops burdening my back and legs (never unloads)... FOR ME PERSONALLY it was a great body builder move... that's A LOT OF WORK with heavy(relatively) weight and no rest... it got me in shape QUICK compared to other exercises

    Not being a hater, but judging from this video Layne reaaalllly doesn't have the great of a deadlift technique. He get's a huge amount of thoracic rounding and even some in the lumbar region too (mega bad). This is NOT how you deadlift - cervical/emphasized kyphosis of the upper spine is viable (and used effectively by numerous elite lifters) but anything lower down than that has a series degrading effect on the cartridge plates that separate the spinal vertebrae. Continued lifting in this fashion dramatically increases the risk of a one-way trip to snap city, no question about it . Read basically any literature anywhere on the subject if you want clarification of this.

    • @faridabuid7523
      @faridabuid7523 9 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      +Jack Parkinson Yet I still haven't met a single strong Powerlifter who got hurt rounding his back. For some people getting somewhat rounded provides better leverages and intra abdominal pressure, I'm like that too. Most Powerlifters pull with rounded backs (thoracic and lumbar) for years and never get injuries from that. Is there more risk? Perhaps. It should only be done once your back is strong enough to handle it, I started doing it once I could pull 500 and haven't looked back ever since. In my opinion (and most likely the opinion of a lot of world record holding Powerlifters) it's okay to round whatever part of your spine as long as it's not in complete end range flexion and it's properly braced. Layne has been rounding his back for years now, over a decade, when exactly is his back gonna snap? Why aren't most world record holders in wheelchairs? It's always the guy pulling

      +Jack Parkinson the dude is over hand deadliftings over 500lbs. whatever he is doing is clearly working. And as said earlier a lot of competitive lifters round their backs, but they have so much muscle mass that helps reduce injury.

    I feel somewhat stupid passing along advice on a Layne Norton video.....but I think the explanation of the sumo is pretty bare bones, wihch isn't great because I think it's a more technical lift. There's more than just "Spread the floor and lockout"
    My change would be to make the Sumo a 2 part lift - Spread the floor to break the ground and from that point focus on snapping the knees in and lock them out - then pull back to finish the lift by squeezing the glutes. Locking out the hips too early like as mentioned will leave you in a terrible position that will be almost impossible to lockout with.

    Deadlift is not a back workout though. It's a full body lift that should be mainly aimed at the hamstrings and glutes.

    • @conman1395
      @conman1395 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Kek you're doing it wrong if that's the main area you're activating. Either that or your lower back isn't as strong as it should be. The primary movers should be your leg's posterior chain.

    • @johnalvares9808
      @johnalvares9808 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @dickjohnson5025
      @dickjohnson5025 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct, it is a compound lift, BUT the primary antagonists are lumbar, glutes and hams (i.e. Posterior Chain). You can do deads during back day or leg day, either is fine, but you shouldn't mix squats and deads.

    • @tannermaxwell7321
      @tannermaxwell7321 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      have a spotter use a wooden rod as a ruler - there is a "yo Elliot" video about this.. this guy is actually full of crap.. i've dead-lifted 600lbs raw and 99% of it is not socks, slippers and belts, -- i've never given a shsh about that - it is grip and technique. he spends 15s talking about technique and 5m talking about slippers -- whaaa? . I don't care who you are a) most people have an imbalance with their glutes /hamstring / lower back - (the triple muscle pairing that does the work ) - they have an imbalance simply based on physical proportions God gave them - so learn yours and work within it, and b) if you push 500lbs it'll be the grip that gives you the most hassle. buy a captains of crush gripper and chalk it up baby

    • @con_boy
      @con_boy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Nathaniel Watkins it depends on your build.. long body people are doing more of a squat (I belong to this group, it's harder for this group, my gut is compressed when I drive up, my knees are over 20 degrees bent).. short body people are doing more of a straight leg.. u gotta know who you are. a good rule of thumb is where the bar sits when ur upright. for me the bar is by my balls so that's very high and means I have short arms.. whereas my mate is half was down his quad.. it's not a big deal.. typically you are naturally a squatter (long body) or a deadlifter (long levers) but I do deadlifts BECAUSE I find squatting easy

My current best it 210kg on deadlift but never in my life have I took slack outta the bar or engaged my lats. God knows how I have never gained a serious injury but it probably explains why my lower back felt so fatigued on when I decide to go heavy. I feel quite embarrassed now thinking about it. Thanks for the great video I look forward to using your tips during my future deadlift sessions.

    • @faridabuid7523

      RebirthFitness anybody who pulls conventional should wear deadlift slippers in my opinion. For sumo you need a shoe that has a thin sole but also provides some sort of side support for your ankle not to roll/slip. Some good choices are wrestling shoes, SABO deadlift shoes, Metal shoes (the ones that Dan Green has), etc.

    If form is a problem i suggest rack pulls , i have had back surgery i find that rack pulls are a lot better .i still deadlift with good form but i never go over 315 on DL , over 315 i rack pull , i am all natural at 57 years of age i tried a lot of thing all turn out to be bad for my health ,now i just use omega -3's and a multivitamin and whey protein to fill in between meals 3 full meals 2 protein shakes by the way i do old school workouts full body i use to use a splits but ran in to recovery issues , full body gives me the time i need to recover 3 day , squats , beach, Overhead press, DL both kinds , pull up , chins, t-bar row and other rows , biceps curls all kinds , triceps pushdowns , dips, skull crushers , close grip bench press for triceps, calf raise seated and standing , i don't do all the exercises in one day i split them up over a 3 day workout , 4 sets of heavy 5 to 8 reps , 4 to 5 sets 8 to 10 medium, 2 to 3 sets of 15 reps light day. compound movement are my bread and butter , if you never tried a full body tried it , Old school lifer wasn't wrong you can build good mass and muscle with full body , If you don't think so check out JaRon fit and leroy colbert on youtube. LIft hard and be safe , DO it right for longevity.

    hey guys! what does "pulling the slack out of the bar" mean? thanks

    • @joshhardy188
      @joshhardy188 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +Gergely Sárfi As in pulling the bar under enough tension that the moment you start the lift the bar comes up too. All bars (especially an old bar with wear and tear) have a small amount of play in them such minor as bends/run out, slight radial play on the bearings (if they have them), plus theres a small clearance between the inside diameter of the plates and the outside diameter of the bar ends.
      Next time you have a bar on the floor thats loaded up with plates, give the bar a jiggle up and down and you'll feel the play in it!
