It was held up in 44 and shown at first only overseas to the US Armed Forces. It was released to the general public in 1946. Another film that got held up was "Devotion" with Ida Lupino and Olivia De Havilland. About the Bronte sisters, IIRC.

The old movies were great. Stanwyck was a fantastic actress . My Reputation was one of her best and I always liked Lucille Watson who played everybody's Mom or Grandmom.
This was one Stanwyck's favorite films. I like Watson too. She could play the harridan and then a moment later make you love her. Check her out in "Watch On The Rhine", which she did on Broadway and whcih got her her only Oscar nomination. She's wonderful! Steve

It's a "Bett Davis" type vehicle. She was smart to do it after having played the ultimate murderess in " Double Indemnity:". If you liked her in this type of role, try a later romance she did called ; " All I Desire". ('53). Lovely at the holidays.
Always preferred Eve in movies rather than TV shows, Miss Brooks, mother's in law. One of her best was the Lady Wants Mink, William Demerest was her used car salesman/owner husband. Great little movie, Mrs Cleaver from lv it to beaver, Robert Shayne, Inspector Henderson from Superman. Too many more to list !!
I agree. I like her best as a supporting character. Check out Nora Prentiss with Ann Sheridan and Zachary Scott, she plays another interesting friend role like in this one and "Mildred Pierce", only a little bit more acrebic. She was vastly underrated and I think suffered from typcasting. Best; Steve
I could never understand why George Brent always seemed to be the man that women fell for in the movie plots of the late 30's and 40's. He is rather stodgy looking, uninteresting, pompous, stuffy and bland. It seems to me that there were so many more interesting and more handsome men that could have played his parts.
Well, he was quite the ladies man at the studio and had affairs with pracically all of them. Bette Davis, who had a big affair with him, once said to Geraldine Fitzgerald; " You know Gerri, I think you're the only woman at Warners who hasn't had George. "

Most certainly a Christmas movie (that can be watched any time of year) and TCM is NOT playing it this year. So disappointed.
