Akira is THE film. Phenomenal first pick on your part. It had a profound impact on myself. Every youth should watch it. The manga to me, is even better than the film (my favourite manga/graphic novel of all time). The greater philosophical implications, combined with stronger exposition, makes it an even more profound experience in my opinion. I can't believe you have the full colourized release of the manga!
You do a great service for the current generation by stoking their appetite with all this awesome content from days gone by. Your unbridled enthusiasm that you exhibit in every video on your channel is nothing short of infectious.
Keep up the great work Johnny, you represent us Canucks well. I always look forward to watching your content every week.

Much respect, man. 80s/90s anime is the best IMO. So many groundbreaking films that changed the way I looked at animation forever. For me the nostalgia comes from films such as Tekkaman Blade, Bubblegum Crisis, Cutie Honey, Devil Hunter Yoko, Gunsmith Cats, and Plastic Little to name a few.

I gotta toss in one of my favorites....Vampire Hunter D. Absolutely adored it growing up. Also kinda nice to have this video since it gave me some new stuff to check out that I honestly knew fuck all about previously \m/

The original one was a letdown for me. I got into anime in the late 90´s. I watched the trailer for Bloodlust and got the DVD for the original and it hasn´t stand the test of time at all. However, Bloodlust is AMAZING. Not just a great anime/horror/action movie but a great movie overall.

    1.Princess Mononoke
    2.Perfect Blue
    3.Castle Of Cagliostro
    4.Nausicaa
    5.Tokyo Godfathers
    6.CowBoy Bebop The Movie
    7.Spirited Away
    8.Roujin Z
    9.Neon Genesis Evangelion 2.22
10.One Piece: Adventures in Alabasta “The Desert Princess a/t Pirates”
Wrote lots of stuff about these movies, so here we go:
You’ll see lots of the same movies everywhere and my list isn’t much different in many regards, but the Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon, Watanabe, Anno and Otomo movies are simply the cream of the crop. There’s no way anyone can deny it ;-) Mononoke is absolutely my most favorite Ghibli/Miyazaki movie. The story, the world, Joe Hisaishi’s music, the voice acting, the art, the characters, the CGI....everything is just so epic. Can’t wait for it’s blu-ray release…..I’m really counting the days! :-p
Perfect Blue is almost my no.1, because it’s just something entirely different, done with so much style and finesse. It made a really a big impact on me when I first saw this. Just seeing such a deep story like this done in animation (who knew that they could do something like this in animation, I sure as hell didn’t back then), literally blew of my socks off.
Castle of Cagaliostro is just complete fun….and with a very interesting story that really spoke to my imagination as a kid. That big castle with all the secret doors, secret rooms, dungeons, the complex waterways Lupin swims through to reach the castle…..all the mystery…and then that big fight in the clock tower at the end. Great stuff and still one of my favorites, plus it holds up so well even though it’s quite old. Nausicaa comes very close to Mononoke and I love it for all the same reasons you mentioned in your episode.
Tokyo Godfathers is probably the most fun you’ll ever have with a Satoshi Kon movie. His other movies are masterpieces as well, but they can be rather hard to swallow sometimes. Tokyo Godfather is a much easier watch, but it still has that briljant touch that only Kon movies had. Plus great, GREAT characters; there are lots of live-action movies out there that don’t feel as human as this anime can be at times. Cowboy Bebop: The Movie is here, because it is the perfect movie counterpart to the tv-series. It has everything a Cowboy Bebop movie should have with a bigger budget and with even better animation. Sure, the stories in the tv-series are better, but as a movie it has a lot of the things we know and love about the series.
Roujin Z has a special place in my heart. It might be strange that I put this before Akira, but for me it’s the better of the two. This Otomo story just speaks more to me then Akira’s. It has a totally outrageous and weird story concept, but this is an anime…..so we can expect a little bit of kookiness here and there.
We all know and love the Evangelion series (I expect). But the 2.22 movie really caught me by surprise. It was just sooo epic and really blew me away…I love it so much (haven’t seen 3.33 yet though, so I don’t know how it compares). It’s like the Empire Strikes Back of the Evangelion saga for me.
The One Piece movie just had to be in here, because the Alabasta Arc is such a fantastic part of the One Piece world. Sure…the tv-series version is better and with a much more detailed story. But this has all the epicness that a movie version brings with it (like with Cowboy Bebop). Plus…I just f**kin’ love One Piece and it’s characters.

I've been hoping you'd do this episode for a long time. We seem to share a somewhat similar taste in anime. Also I am SO glad Honneamise was on your list. 1) LUPIN III: THE CASLTE OF CAGLIOSTRO
    2)GHOST IN THE SHELL
    3) ROYAL SPACE FORCE: THE WINGS OF HONNEAMISE

    8) THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME
    9) AKIRA
    10) A NIGHT ON THE GALACTIC RAILROAD
(Honorable mentions include VAMPIRE HUNTER D: BLOODLUST, MILLENNIUM ACTRESS, THE WOLF CHILDREN, and PATLABOR 2.)
Here are my top 10 favorite Studio Ghibli films.

    2) LAPUTA: CASTLE IN THE SKY
    3) WHISPER OF THE HEART
    4) MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO

OMG Great list, man! I'm so glad you put Project A-ko on the list! It opened the doors for so many people in the anime industry. Artists like Kia Asamiya and Atsuko Nakajima to voice actors like Megumi Hayashibara (her career started here) and Emi Shinohara (Sailor Jupiter). Plus, Shuichi Ikeda, the voice of Char, lends his voice for a female parody of that same character! And let's not forget the character Mari... It's the fun factor trivia stuff that makes this so great. With the change in copyright infringement laws, I doubt something like this could be made today. I will definitely check out Arion! Old school is the best school!

Great fucking video, Johnny! I really enjoyed your picks and your love for these films come alive so well through your enthusiasm! I think top tens about anime films are one of the most "better" concepts to build off off. I just think that other people's love for the genre will encourage them to not "hate" on your list, but make them want to share their own nostalgic picks and overall we'll all gain a lot more knowledge about hidden gems and why certain films need to be recognized.

Agreed that Otomo's drawing skills are godly. I too was completely floored by his architectural designs, his vehicles designs, etc etc. no matter the "camera angle" (or point of view) of each panel, everything is always drawn perfectly in perspective and feels solid. the guy single-handedly attracted my attention to anime with the Akira manga. The movie is really good but still pales in comparison to the manga.
Also for all the canadians on here : does anyone remember the very first iteration of "Teletoon at Night", in Teletoon's first year I think? Man that was edgy back then! every saturday night they had an anime movie and we got treated to many great ones : Wings of Honneamise, Ninja Scroll, Patlabor... all great movies I still watch. Man that was an exciting time for television for a pre-teen like I was at the time! They also had these great stop-motion animation bumpers that were slightly disturbing and creepy. that really gave the program an extra dose of character, a creepy and cool aura. I'm so nostalgic towards that era, it was so good :'(

Fantastic list, and includes a lot of my all-time favourites as well. I APPLAUDED when you included Project A-Ko (especially when you mentioned its influence in AP's Ninja High School) and Wings of Honneamise in there - they are a big part of why I'm a fan of anime. And of course Akira blew me away with the detail in art and and ground-breaking animation, as well as the stellar soundtrack and fantastically crafted story adaptation compared to the absolutely HUGE one in the manga.
Sadly, I haven't seen Nausicaa out of all the Ghibli films (my favourite out of those is Laputa) or any of the Macross films (was never really into that or Gundam), and I only know Dirty Pair from the Toren Smith and Adam Warren comics from Eclipse and Dark Horse.
A couple of my favourite anime films has to be Ghost in the Shell:Innocence, but that may be because I felt it was such a MASSIVE improvement over the first GitS film, which was just okay. Also, I loved the first Mobile Police Patlabor film for the compelling story and the fine balance of seriousness, whimsy and action in the tone (the following two were a bit too 'heavy' for me). Both are manga adaptations by Mamoru Oshii, who has a really polished and metallic (if at times very minimalist) style in his work.
Again, great list, Johnny - will definitely try to seek out Nausicaa and Arion.

It's funny how a lot of your titles are almost the exact same for myself. Of course they're not the same but I know most of the titles you talked about. I'm about 43 and I think we are about the same age. From some of your other videos I think youre from Canada, I'm from Los Angeles, but back in those days that magical moment when anime invaded the Americas and introduced a whole generation to Japan's art. I remember asking my dad to buy me the VHS tape of Wings of Honneamise for like $90 dollars! And that was in the 1980's! Even though it was difficult to find it was truly magical when you found those gems that are still awesome today (Galaxy Express 999, Macross, etc.). Thanks for sharing your memories. Brought some of my own back as well.

This video is great. It's probably your best yet. Your love and enthusiasm for this subject makes me love anime myself. I really enjoy it but am completely oblivious to many of these films and many series in general. There are many big animes from the 70's, 80's and 90's I've never even heard of or just recently (Harlock). I will definitely check out some of the movies on your list. I've seen a few but like I said, never even heard of many of them. Thanks for this video. More videos like this!

I really respect the fact you put Akira over Macross DYRL. DYRL is probably my favorite anime film ever, but I to this day can not get over the artistry that Katsuhiro Otomo has, he's by far my favorite mangaka artist ever. I truly feel that movie deserves the top spot. It's such a wonderfully detailed film, all of his art is a feast. Great pick!

    • @VascusGaming
      @VascusGaming 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

***** Start with Macross Do You Remember Love since it's more of a refined version of SDF Macross, then I'd recommend Macross Zero (a prequel to SDF Macross set during the Unification Wars) , Macross Plus, Macross Frontier and Macross Delta.
Macross II is non canon, and Macross 7 is sort of the ugly duckling of the series, I only really liked it for the music.
Honestly, Robtech the Macross Saga was awesome when I was a kid, but I can't in good faith recommend it over the orignal Macross series. Robotech is three animes all haphazardly pasted together and re-dubbed into a singular storyline. If that sounds like a mess, you'd be right.

      @jldp24 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Aleksandros robotech macross saga is the ultimate..the voice actors..the robotech theme by ulpo minucci was god like. What jm saying is ...is tht macross with the minucci soundtrack and voice actors in ebglish were absolutely unmatched. The rest of robotech fails..harmony gold fails. Original macross should be untouched. Wil die with me as one of my favourite things in this world

Thanks for some recommendations I'll be sure to check them out, I really dig the anime videos hope to see more preferably on some of those art books you got there.

Yeeeeah! Akira! Rightful #1! (watched it again last week.) I just commented on your Top 10 Films about how there was no anime, until I saw this in the 'Up next' section. I'm going to watch some of these for sure! Venus & Macross first. I love a mature/seinen/dark theme, personally. I expected GITS, since it influenced even the Matrix, but that was mid-90s & your list is hardcore 80s. Thanx, Johnny.
Edit: I felt Nausicaa was pretty much a spiritual pre-cursor to Mononoke. They're both commentary on industry vs environment, but Mononoke had more glitz! I really tried to watch Nausicaa for a long time during the period of my life when Mononoke was my #1. When I finally did, I felt underwhelmed because Mononoke was already so amazing.. I should rewatch again someday, it's got more of an emotional edge to it, if I remember correctly. Ghibli never fails. But I disliked Totoro... Heh.

Some of my favorites (many of these could be number 1, depending on my mood).
1.Akira (Amazing hand-drawn animation that is yet to be surpassed. People complain about the story, but I look at this film more as a mood piece. The mood is one of impending doom, and I think this is hard to pull off in animation. From the moment the film starts, your transported into the nightmarish Neo-Tokyo until it's destruction).
2.Spirited Away (Miyazaki is not only a brilliant artist, but a brilliant storyteller)
    3.Ghost In The Shell
    4.Perfect Blue
    5. My OCD is going nuts trying to decide on my favorites, so I'm going to stop right here.

I remember finally getting that perfect box set Animeigo released on Macross TV. I had to preorder it back 2001. it was so awesome to finally have the full non-Robotech version of that show after Streamline Pics never finished that "Perfect Collection" on VHS in the 90's.
