HappyConsoleGamer I'll keep an eye out for it. currently getting ready for convention in AZ at the end of the month. it will be like 120 outside so my face will melt off,but I'll try to keep an eye out for anything interesting
HappyConsoleGamer you're too awesome man. You have the knowledge and storytelling ability to put my passion into words. I have to show your videos like this to my mates!! Haha. It gets them as hyped as me for the greatness of these anime/games. Anyways, thanks again. Your videos are pretty much my favourite things to watch for nostalgia/hype/knowledge/comfort reasons
Thanks for these recommendations, John! I just wish that Macross/Southern Cross/Mospeada weren't so damn EXPENSIVE. Also, on Amazon Prime Video in the US, you can watch all three with your Prime Video subscription.
I just love these old school anime videos, since no one else talks about these (at least not in high quality videos like this). Sometimes you say 'I could go on about this, but I won't', no PLEASE DO. Ramble on endlessly. We love hearing you talk about them. I'd say select less shows and movies per part and just talk to your hearts content if that's what it takes. Anyway, thanks for being awesome as always.
I do enjoy a lot of new anime, but the anime of 1980s and 90s has a more human and charming feeling to them. You can see the flaws and the pencil/paint strokes of the artist. Mazinger Z, Armored Trooper Votoms, Fist of the Northstar, Getter Robo and Hajime no Ippo are some of my favorites.
Yeah and I feel alot of them are much darker/grittier. If you compare iron blooded orphans (trying to be gritty) to zeta gundam (actually really gritty) there is no comparison.
I have to tell you mate, i love the way that all your vids come from your personal life, sharing your childhood memories and telling us your stories we love that mate keep it up!
Man, you always have the right timing for this recomendation videos. I just finished Bubblegum Crisis and was looking for something equally awesome. Thanks!
Right out the gate with Black Magic M66. I bought that for my friend for his birthday on vhs in the 90's, and we watched it until the tape was unwatchable, and nobody I've met since has heard of it. Same with Project A-Ko. Top tier, sir.
Yay you finally talked about Patlabor, my favorite anime! I agree with your view. Patlabor is not about robot but story and characters. Actually my favorite episode of TV series doesn't even contain any mech scene (in this episode, the members of the labor team just wait for food delivery that they ordered...). My favorite Patlabor is The Movie 2 that also doesn't contain many mech scenes but I absolutely love it. The music, the atmosphere... just beautiful.
Great episode and love for Macross Plus. I found your channel years ago not for gaming but while searching macross on YT. You had just done an episode about Macross and your gold book etc. Completely agree with everything you said about Macross plus and still watch it to this day. Love Mospeada too. Really enjoyed this one.
Important and cool thing about Macross Plus that can get overlooked at times is it was the directorial debut of Shinichiro Watanabe who went on to direct Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo (and more of course) and the first series with a Soundtrack fully by Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Conplex, Wolfs rain, etc). Not just a great series but an important one as well.
I love it when you talk about anime, Johnny! I guess I'm a bit of an old soul who really loves the charm of old school anime and always love to hear your recomendations and how enthusiastic you are for all of these shows and games!
Love these anime recommendations Johnny! I really only watch anime that you are into and suggest because I find it too hard to find elsewhere and I really love the older stuff that you are into. Wings of Mayonaese or whatever the hell its called was awesome!
I've gotten back into watching anime recently, checking out more modern stuff, but I grew up on 80s-90s anime, so this video definitely resonates with me. It's amazing to recall how niche it was, and how mainstream it became.
I come back to this video series every few years to jot down a few new titles to check out. When I first watched it, I haven’t watched any of them. Now I think I’m at 75%.
Thank you so much for this Johnny. I will humbly admit I have only watched Cardcaptor Sakura when growing up in Spain but otherwise I haven't seen ANY anime whatsoever. All of the knowledge you share is enriching me so much!. Thank you!.
I've still never gotten the chance to watch Gal Force but somehow ended up with the Famicom Disc game in my collection. Speaking of recommendations, did you ever get around to watching Twilight of the Dark Master?
Genocyber, Angel Cop, Dominion Tank Police, Bubblegum Crisis, Devil Man, Legend of the Dragon Kings, Cyber City Oedo 808, 3x3 Eyes are some of my favourites.
Bro, as usual your anime picks are spot on!...Black Magic M-66...Macross Plus -both brilliant! Do you recall an OVA called Maddox-01:Metal Skin Panic?... Seems really hard to find.
Black Magic M66, well familiar with it as the old fart that i am :) Got the VHS,The DVD and the Manga of Black Magic M66, glad to see it get some love, it still holds up and i still enjoy it after all this time. I can't deny how much of an impact Project A-Ko has had, it's been quite hard to ignore and so evident, however it did not have that influence on me myself but i saw it and it had an impact on other peoples art, i certainly liked it and it had an impact on me in another way but not when it came to my artstyle or what i wanted to create. I got into Anime a bit earlier, the first one i saw was back around 83 and from there on i saw more throughout the eighties and did not get to A-ko until the probably around the very start of the 90'ts. My influence was more Go nagai, Leiji Matsumoto, Shotaro Ishinomori and people like that and then the more ultra violent stuff and obscure Anime came in around the start of the 90'ts when i started hunting for bootleg tapes and saved up money for expensive imports :D Yes why the hell have we not gotten an official real release of Arion! It's a crime :) I still have my old early VHS tapes of Gall Force so yes i remember it well Johnny, i pretty much remember all of these old forgotten moldy and wonderful animes that had a real soul and aura of passion and REAL hard work behind it :) Maross Plus is excellent, what an achievement it was and still is. I like everything Patlabor, all good stuff in my anime book and i like that it is slow and takes it's time building the story and atmosphere :) I been meaning to watch Escaflowne again, also have not seen it since about the time it came out, very good series. Always great to hear some talk and love about some good old anime it reminds me of my own past and my love and passion for this sort of stuff. Great video Johnny, keep the love and passion alive brother!
holy crap I've been watching anime that you have mentioned in your last anime video and movies and I really enjoy them. Such a coincidence you come up with a part 2
That Scope dog tee! thankyou for more recommendations previous ones have blown my mind. recently saw all of mayazaki's future boy Conan, life changing, could not recommend it enough.
I got most of the U.S. Rendition anime VHS lineup last year and it's a sweet ass colection of work : Black Magic M-66, Appleseed, Gunbuster, Dangaioh, Iczer One... Killer stuff!
Black magic M66...One of the first official subtitled tapes I bought...though I had the bootleg a few years before. I even found a glow in the dark t-shirt of the robot....awesome film.
Black magic, I always saw that advertised on my old anime vhs tapes I got from the market. Only one stall in my entire city had them and they only had about 3 or 4 new ones every few months. Had to go with my grandparents when I was 3 years old lol
Oh my god, Johnny! I love Project A-Ko so much (as evident by my totally anime-inspired avatar you see on the left)! I recognized the DVD case before you even picked it up, even at an odd angle relative to the camera. That movie is so effed-up. I love how a high school drama slowly evolves into the greatest anime fight scene of all time. It starts with fists and ends with planes, tanks, and spaceships. I love it!!!! Oh, one of my favorite movies ever. Bravo, sir.
Wow most of these anime titles I have already seen as I bought a bunch of old VHS tapes of anime shows from a local movie store that was closing down :D I also have every OVA/Movie released for Patlabor! I love this show!! I can't wait to get a copy of the liveaction movie!! Awesome video Johnny! Thanks for sharing!
Damn right thanks Johnny! Have not heard of at least half of these animes and it's so fucking enjoyable seeing how passionate you are and how much you truly care about this shit. Much love \m/ by the way what's your background music?
i grew up in Brazil in the 90s and amines were a craze there! great amines such as Saint Seiya (my favourite anime EVER!!), Sharuto, Sailor Moon, Yu Yu Hakusho, etc were quite mainstream and everybody loved them! This is the first time I see your channel and already subscribbled! You gave nice suggestions here. Keep up the good work! P.S By the way you are a cute pie! 😉
Project A-ko was originally an entry in the hardcore Cream Lemon hentai series (hence the suggestive relationship between A-ko, B-ko and C-ko), but the production team saw its potential to be more of a fun and wacky adventure, and just ran with that instead. I've only seen the first entry of Gall Force, which was pretty cool sci-fi, but gets reaaally weird by the end. My brother loves Captain Tylor. I have to watch it sometime, but he highly recommends it. If you like light-hearted, theatrical adventure, it's supposed to be a great introduction to 90's anime. Captain Tylor is still published from Nozomi (Right Stuf), so you can still buy it pretty easily from them. I picked up both of those Patlabor movie boxsets for $10 each. Apparently they had flooded the market with copies and had too much stock on hand, so the publisher wound up selling the sets discounted to distributors throughout the country. I lucked out on the timing when I picked it up. They recently released blu-rays of it, along with the OVA and TV series. Also, an animation expo event in Japan recently released a cool 10 minute Patlabor "Reboot" animation a few months back. It's not available for viewing online anymore, but you can see the trailer for it here: th-cam.com/video/0OJSDCIWaPs/w-d-xo.html The Escaflowne blu-ray is already out. They had this AMAZING trailer for the release (with a new dub) that's freaking incredible to watch: th-cam.com/video/rua5DnhBh3Q/w-d-xo.html Classic show, with some awesome presentation. Old school anime is awesome.
So funny Johnny, most of the anime you've shown here that I do have is still on VHS in crates at my house. I also have tons of LD's including Arcadia of My Youth (a Captain Harlock movie.) Macross Plus was HUGE for me in 1996 when I 1st bought it and it led me to buy the Sharon Apple CD and well as the official OST. Love triangles are a prerequisite in Macross series'. :)
Gary Hobbesworth If you area fan of Guyver, definitely give Baoh a viewing. It came a few years before Guyver and Guyver took some inspiration from it but it is good in it's own right. They only made a 50 minute OVA as far as anime goes but it's one of my favorites.
I'll always remembe the music of Project A-Ko and the opening scene to the first movie. I'm pretty sure it was the first anime that I ever watched and I was instantly hooked.
Just a heads up to any Canadian anime fans in the comments. If you have a valid Library card, you can rent digital streamed copies of some of the anime Johnny has mentioned previously, completely for free, on the "Hoopla Digital" service. Their selection of anime is limited, but they change it up from time to time. In previous months, they've had things like: Captain Tylor, Star Blazers, Ghost in the Shell, Macross Plus and Street Fighter Alpha The Animation. As of writing this, you can now borrow: Otaku No Video, Bubblegum Crisis (as well as Bubblegum Crash, and the spin-off series A.D. Police Files), Trigun: Badlands, Riding Bean, among others.
thanks for this info on then topic. i dont know much about anime but i have always had an interest, well since robotech and again later in the 90's. anyways i will look into the titles you talked about in this video. i got some of the stuff you mentioned in the previous video on the topic you posted a while back
One can not simply mention The Vision of Escaflowne without mentioning the music by Yoko Kanno and Hajime Mizoguchi. (although my favourite is the movie soundtrack, I can't recommend the movie)
Glorious haven't finished the Video Yet, but I noticed the big box as "The Irresponsible Captain Tylor" freaken love that show, good Choice mate :D Also there is an OVA for 10 extra episodes at the end to tie up the story.
I recommend City Hunter, been watching recently and it's very good, old school detective/crime series from 88', with a lot of inspiration from Lupin the III, and an awesome ED.
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam is one of those anime's where you watch for the characters and forget about the robots at times ... and it has an end that will rip your guts out.. seriously as for Gundam its the most under rated
I had Escaflowne on VHS it was the very first version recorded from a local tv network that aired animes. The later releases were butchered to death so I gave up on re-watching it for years and years now. I as well wait on the bluray editions to see if everything is original in there and getting then those to finally re-watch everything in original form.
I had watched about 90% of those (but some were never released here in UK) I whole heartily agree with you about Project AKo such a classic (Black Magic M-66 is also great) Escaflowne is still one of my favourites (I had imported the DVDs from USA before they were released here in the UK) Some of my other favourites from back in the day are Dominion Tank Police & 3x3 Eyes ^_^
HappyConsoleGamer, I think you'd really like a new anime added to Netflix called High Score Girl. It's about two kids who like to frequent the shady Japanese arcades and also talk quite a bit about PC Engine. It's just a good anime about the love of video games.
To many to mention really. Great video sounds so cliche but seriously it was a great video. Thank you Johnny. Battle Angel and Riding Bean and Devil hunter Yohko.
I remember Escaflowne being on Fox Kids Saturday mornings for about 3 or 4 weeks, they didn't even air the first episode because of how violent it was, someone must have just seen animation and mechs and thought it was meant for kids, good times.
Some of my favorite 90s anime: • Black Jack (Drama) • Berserk (Mature Action) • Flame of Recca (Action) • Escaflowne (Mecha) • Yu Yu Hakusho (Action) • Hunter x Hunter (Action) • Trigun (Action) - Seconded • Now and Then, Here and There (Sci-Fi Drama) Also FLCL, which started in 2000 but it's one of my favorites ever so ye.
I wish Netflix or Crunchyroll had old animes to watch in their libraries... I'm really interested in old animes but can't find them without being in low quality. I can't order DVD's either because I'm from Brazil , and importation is a no no here.
Thank you soo much I really like this I really like older style anime somtimes better than new ones I started watching anime when i was younger in the 00's I think i was 6 years old but only saw a few but now I got back into it a few years back love it.
I'm 22 and love this old stuff, not in a hipster way I legit love anime from this era and even before (I own manga from the 40s) you seen tomorrow's Joe? It's really good.
From the top of my head I would always recommend (without giving an entire wash list) 3x3 Eyes, the ORIGINAL Record of Lodoss War, Noir, Serial Experiments LAIN, Blue Gender, DT Eightron, The original Guyver, and Jin-Roh.
Trigun was re-released & improved from the old release with better video quality, remixed audio in 5.1(both tracks) & original OP's since each OP had different video. Still waiting for a blu-ray remaster if it ever happens.
Don't worry I will do a part 3 for sure! too much to mention!
HappyConsoleGamer I'll keep an eye out for it. currently getting ready for convention in AZ at the end of the month. it will be like 120 outside so my face will melt off,but I'll try to keep an eye out for anything interesting

It gets them as hyped as me for the greatness of these anime/games. Anyways, thanks again. Your videos are pretty much my favourite things to watch for nostalgia/hype/knowledge/comfort reasons
I cant wait! I really want to know if I should check out Robotech or Macross, Mospeda and Southern Cross in their original forms.
Did you ever watch yu yu hakusho or g gundam?
Thanks for these recommendations, John! I just wish that Macross/Southern Cross/Mospeada weren't so damn EXPENSIVE. Also, on Amazon Prime Video in the US, you can watch all three with your Prime Video subscription.

Anime and Video Games are the best things to ever bless this earth, besides Oxygen.
Dante's Anime&Games I completely agree..
I only watch movies and anime and also play video games on my free time.
and pizza
Water, actually.
Until the mid 2000's when anime got shit.
AuthorityCat Well life wouldn't exist without it so you got me there.
Char Aznable and Gundam
Of course, but I'm to humble to mention my own series ;^)
I agree I prefer the old berserk compared to the new movies for that same reason
I remember going to Suncoast and paying 30-40 $ per DVD for 3-4 episodes of Vision of Escaflowne back in the day. Ahh the "Good ole' days" lol.
Suncoast..now I haven't heard that name in many years.
sexymuthafuxxxa I miss that place.
TriforceRich I read that in Obi-wan Kanobi's voice from A New Hope lol
Before that download button!
lol
I loved both Captain Taylor and Trigun growing up, another great episode, thanks for doing a second part!
Man, Ben Dunn's Ninja High School- I used to read it in the early 90's. Gall Force is a great series too!
Man, you always have the right timing for this recomendation videos. I just finished Bubblegum Crisis and was looking for something equally awesome. Thanks!
Thanks for this! I've been looking to get into anime and your recommendations are much appreciated!
thanks for the recomendations, I have just added more 80s series to watch to my list.
Right out the gate with Black Magic M66. I bought that for my friend for his birthday on vhs in the 90's, and we watched it until the tape was unwatchable, and nobody I've met since has heard of it. Same with Project A-Ko. Top tier, sir.
any one remember Ronin Warriors!
TransKingFormers hell yeah! it always aired when I'm in school. the only time I could catch it was either a school holiday or during the summer.
I wish they would release it on Blu-ray.
i think its on crunchy roll or crackle i know its on a streaming service right now but i think its under the original name
th-cam.com/play/PLCF9FBB07D2DAB025.html
The dub is so awful. It definitely is a series I hope that gets a modern day revival.
Yay you finally talked about Patlabor, my favorite anime! I agree with your view. Patlabor is not about robot but story and characters. Kenichi Sonoda is a great humble man. Such a wonderful character designer.
Love these anime recommendations Johnny! I really only watch anime that you are into and suggest because I find it too hard to find elsewhere and I really love the older stuff that you are into. Wings of Mayonaese or whatever the hell its called was awesome!

I've still never gotten the chance to watch Gal Force but somehow ended up with the Famicom Disc game in my collection.
Speaking of recommendations, did you ever get around to watching Twilight of the Dark Master?
Thanks for this video. Between you and James Rolfe, I got a gang of films to watch.
@HappyConsoleGamer Escaflowne already got a Blu-Ray release late last year and it was redubbed as far as I know.
Connor Waltman If you backed it on Kickstarter you could get it with both dub tracks. The regular retail release only has new Dub.
I know.
Yeah I filmed this video 6 months ago just edited it now so I know for sure!
My taste is really simular to yours. Old anime rocks!
What about Martian Successor Nadesico? It's so cool, fantastic, humorous & dreamy!
Tell me about the old anime senpai
Escaflowne was one of the first anime I remember seeing! Nice to know that some people still remember that show.

Black MAgic M-66 was amazing thanks for taking me back so much nostalgia. I almost forgot about this movie!
I would say vampire hunter d and ninja scroll are must watch anime movies that are pretty old school now.
Oh my god, Johnny! I love Project A-Ko so much (as evident by my totally anime-inspired avatar you see on the left)! I recognized the DVD case before you even picked it up, even at an odd angle relative to the camera.

Whats up Johnny how is the weather in old canuckistan
nice, i love the episodes where you cover anime! good stuff, johnny!
man YOU really made my day with this. thank you for this video. i really really appreciate it. you are the best
You forgot to mention the soundtrack of project Ako and the documentary film ! Great episode !!!!!
Johnny you look like Vash the Stampede, you even have the same piercings !
Lardo LOVE AND PEACE !!
i grew up in Brazil in the 90s and amines were a craze there!

PROJECT A-KO!!
Love that one. One of the first anime I remember ever watching.
I already have a ton of anime backlogged I wanna watch, but I'll put these towards the top of the list. Johnny's opinion is one I value

Old school anime is awesome.
Have you seen Cosmo Police Justy? its a great OVA from 85.
There was a re-release of Black Magic on DVD not too long ago.
Patlabor 2 was awesome and it's directed by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the shell)
Finally got a day off to watch this!!!
Man again I am loving these recommendations.
Johnny as always you are a huge inspiration!!!
-David
So funny Johnny, most of the anime you've shown here that I do have is still on VHS in crates at my house. I also have tons of LD's including Arcadia of My Youth (a Captain Harlock movie.) Other great old school anime is BAOH, Record of Lodoss War and Bio Booster Armor Guyver.
I love all three versions of Guyver, even that odd live-action one haha the fight scenes are still good to this day.
I'm not familiar with BAOH, but Guyver and Record of Lodoss War are tragically overlooked.
2 live action movies and one OVA.

Good! Keep it up!
I watch all your episodes! It's incredibly cool! Continue in the same spirit! Sorry for my English, because I live in Russia!)
I'ma watch Trigun again! Thanks for the videos sir.
Johnny, do you know of the Urusie Yatsura movies? Especially 1 and 2. Also 3x3 Eyes and Guyver?

I watched this with my 14 year old girl friend. Blew my mind and made me a life long anime fan
just watched black magic 66 and I remember seeing it on my parents cable subscription either scifi channel or starz back in teh day
Glorious haven't finished the Video Yet, but I noticed the big box as "The Irresponsible Captain Tylor" freaken love that show, good Choice mate :D
Also there is an OVA for 10 extra episodes at the end to tie up the story.
It's all about Dennis The Menace, Street Sharks, Woody Wood Pecker, Thunder Cats. 🔥
You know its gonna be a good list when the dude busts out the physical OVAs.
I recommend City Hunter, been watching recently and it's very good, old school detective/crime series from 88', with a lot of inspiration from Lupin the III, and an awesome ED.
Black Magic M66 was probably the first anime I ever saw. I love that movie
My Recommendations - The Ultimate Teacher, Otaku no Video, Madox-01, Macross DYRL, Bubblegum Crisis 2032, Bubble Gum Crash, Riding Bean, Castle of Calistro, Ninja Scroll OVA.
I've never seen "Riding Bean", but I love "Gunsmith Cats". It's from the same guy, with similar characters.
Johnny knows what's up! Man, totally a guy I'd hang out with
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam is one of those anime's where you watch for the characters and forget about the robots at times ... and it has an end that will rip your guts out.. seriously as for Gundam its the most under rated
I had Escaflowne on VHS it was the very first version recorded from a local tv network that aired animes. The later releases were butchered to death so I gave up on re-watching it for years and years now. I as well wait on the bluray editions to see if everything is original in there and getting then those to finally re-watch everything in original form.
I love Project Ako still have it on VHS.
Macross Plus is amazing... I still have to check the long form OVA series version!
LOL happy to be part of the "old school crew."
Project A-Ko was the first anime I ever saw. I own it & pop it in from time to time. Great film.
"...thank god for TH-cam, i typed in black magic music and it was so cool to find that" - HCG
Thanks for the recommendation. I have a a question... How is Robman doing?
I was hoping you'd talk about Vision of Escaflowne. Have you watched the movie The Girl from Gaia? It is an excellent retelling of the show.
Some of my favorite 90s anime:
• Black Jack (Drama)
• Berserk (Mature Action)
• Flame of Recca (Action)
• Escaflowne (Mecha)
• Yu Yu Hakusho (Action)
• Hunter x Hunter (Action)
• Trigun (Action) - Seconded
• Now and Then, Here and There (Sci-Fi Drama)
Also FLCL, which started in 2000 but it's one of my favorites ever so ye.
this was needed Thanks!!
Use to watch Black Magic M66 on the sci-fi channel
It's really good.
now it's time for your modern anime favourite's!!
From the top of my head I would always recommend (without giving an entire wash list) 3x3 Eyes, the ORIGINAL Record of Lodoss War, Noir, Serial Experiments LAIN, Blue Gender, DT Eightron, The original Guyver, and Jin-Roh.
3x3 Eyes! yeah!!!! So good!
Trigun was re-released & improved from the old release with better video quality, remixed audio in 5.1(both tracks) & original OP's since each OP had different video. Still waiting for a blu-ray remaster if it ever happens.
