STORY
Atop a hill in France, we stumbled upon an unusual house that looked like something out of a witch's storybook.
Upon further investigation, we discovered that this house once belonged to the Sers family from France. It was constructed in the early 1900s by Mr. Sers as a residence for his wife and five children. After his passing, his daughter Bernadette transformed it into her creative retreat where she painted all of her masterpieces.
A few times each year, Bernadette traveled from Paris to this hidden house in the middle of nowhere to focus on her artistic pursuits. As the years went by, she gained a reputation as a renowned artist, her paintings were displayed in galleries all over France.
The house is overflowing with the artworks she created throughout her lifetime. Each room, each corner, holds a new chapter of her life story, told through her creations.
It's clear that she didn't come here alone; there are remnants of her husband and children scattered about. The reason for their absence and refusal to claim their belongings remains a mystery to us.
Sadly, Bernadette left this world at the young age of 71.
Join us on this journey as we bid farewell to this incredible woman and her enchanting witch house.

A castle hidden in the forest. This is definitely my dream.... Magnificent
I don't think living in a hidden place in the middle of a forest is safe, especially nowadays
It's not a palace but it is a charming house.
Unfortunately youre absolutely right...@@marina-id4yv

I just turned 70 year's old.
Because of technology I get to see that which was only in a book somewhere.
Now because you felt it important to share I get to see something I never thought I would ever see.
Thank you for posting
I think the house has been abandoned for some time. More than a decade in any case. Bernadette died in Paris on 20 April 2000. That alone would be 24 years. Who knows if she was still in the house in her last years. Thank you for sharing this video. The house is wonderful. Love your videos!
For being abandoned for the better part of 30 years, the house looks GREAT
No shit lol
Clothes pins and wash line.
As an artist and art historian, I am very moved by this visit to the vacation home of the artist Bernadette Sers. THANKS! Concerning the little paper notes everywhere, I believe that they were intended for the maintenance staff during the owners' absence (I am French speaking, the notes seem to be more instructions than reminders for a person suffering from senility). Regarding the dried plants in the small basket on the vanity in the 'girl's bedroom', it is most likely lavender. But how is it that antique dealers and booksellers have not raided this house filled with treasures linked to Bernadette's life (the Alexandre Bataille piano, the chests of drawers, the carved tablet with a head wearing a tricorn hat, the leather chairs, the cauldrons, the wooden hangers, the old map of Europe, the marble fireplaces, the cradle, the old newspapers from the time of the 2nd World War...)? And what about the sketchbooks and the very beautiful painting in the 'girl's bedroom'? Why hasn't anyone collected them to sell them in a gallery or put them up for auction???? I am saddened by the idea that all these relics of Bernadette's life are doomed to destruction...
I feel this way watching almost every video. That's why it's important to capture these on video for everyone to see. These guys go out on foot to search, they aren't doing a records search at the local govt office. And these property records would probably not be digitized either. If you can find information about the families online somehow, you still don't get home addresses or have any idea that their property was abandoned. Not the same as the US. Hopefully people who might use these types of vids to track down properties are the types of people that want to give back to communities although I imagine some really wealthy investors that don't care.
Obviously this guys took a los of the stuff
Not these guys.. very ethical.
A square plan house.. Very space efficient! Also popular in the United States of America. Our roof would not be as artistically pleasing!
That's the way I always feel about these abandoned houses with everything left behind. I feel like, at least let the stuff be donated, rather than left for decay. 😢
Imagine this charming home full of love and laughter!
The house looks like it's in decent shape. It probably wouldn't be hard to renovate it. What a shame no one is interested in saving it.
І доречі, чому не зробить пристойний музей?❤
У Франції ніби-то нема війни, то чому б не зробити щось новеньке у сфері культури на кшталт музею згадуваної художниці?...❤😮❤😢❤😊
The roof definitely needs work and that is the most cost actually because there are leaks, and it needs to be properly insulated, the electricity also likely needs updating to be up to code as well. The plumbing who knows what shape that is in.
Verdade q pena que somos pobres😅
We artists are sort of witchy. This episode really drew me in if you'll pardon the pun. So easily restored this house!
Omg, I fell in love with that house. And that photograph showed how beautiful it once was and can be again. I would purchase that house, renovate and come there when I need to get away from the states, if I could move there permanently. The view from the balcony window was amazing. I'm glad I clicked the title to your channel. Thank you so much for sharing the interior of that home. As you both were walking through it, I was amazed that nothing had been broken or destroyed by human hands. Had that house been in my state, everything would have been stolen, broken, trashed and vandalized. That's a house where time has stood still. I can imagine how beautiful it must have been when it was loved by the people who resided within those walls. Thanks again for your video. I'll be watching more. ❤
I’d move there before the war breaks out “officially”. States arent safe Under dem globalists.
Buy a house in Africa.
The lucky part is that this house was hidden by those trees and bushes in an camp land
I looked it up and Finland was created in 1917. Until you showed this map I never really thought about these things. I thought those countries were always there. So fascinating. I would love to do what you are doing.
That map is dated before WW1. There is Austria-Hungary, Iceland is part of Denmark, Poland under Germany and Russia ETC.
Я не хотіла б займатись тим чим ви, я хотіла б щоби цей палацовий будинок реставрували б як музей і лишили б у державній власності Франції під патронатом інспекцій культури...
My husband of 46 years can answer a lot of your questions. He knows all things historical and geographical. I counterbalance what he knows with my linguistic and cultural knowledge. I love the way you men commingle your knowledge bits with your desire to learn more!
You should inform the appropriate authorities about this house ASAP.
Vandalism of Mz. Bernadette’s treasures would be a national tragedy.
I think the authorities already know and the place is hidden from view. The guys did a fantastic job
Fake video
@@ad3222 There's always one and here you are 🤣
The time you take to show the rooms, furniture, paintings and drawings is exceptionally fascinating! Your fine camera work and intelligent conversation far exceeds other explorers! Thank you for your hard work and sharing this with us
I’m surprised in over a decade of abandonment it is not too vandalized. Is it protected somehow? Did you ask permission to enter? Abandoned but with owners (relatives) living far away? You explain and treat everything with respect. I love that. This is really enchanting. So much history. I love old things. I have strong Corsican ancestry and currently learning French. 💗 it’s a very nostalgic feeling knowing things come to an end, and there’s a last day to use your beloved things. Beautiful people’s energy impregnated in the house.
I'd love to buy her and fix her up again. What a house in which to grow old; just my garden, my books, tea and kitty cats. Maybe the occasional guest.
Do it!👏👏

That Alexandre Bataille piano is worth a FORTUNE!!!
Not really and not in that state.
I am in the US and could not find much information at all on the piano. I don't even play, but was, for some odd reason, quite taken with it. I could only find advertisements in French (which I had translated). I believe it was maybe 1850s or 1860s based on the style.
It's an EASEL in Bernadette's room. love your videos..THANK YOU!
I always feel sad whenever i see abandoned houses... we don't know the full story why the owners abandoned their house really. In 2019 Our family house was foreclosed by the bank because they tricked us and we are forced to leave and left our belongings we are going to get our stuffs back (as the bank said we can) we just need to find a new place to stay but covid hits us so we couldn't go back there in time but my father's brother buy the house demolished it and get all our stuffs they didn't even asked us if we want our stuff back, after that our family were not the same anymore. Oh and my aunt made fun of us in social media too.. how cruel.
😖🥺😞💪🙋♀️🙏
I'm so sorry.
Lol
😢❤ not sure why someone laughed 🤨😡😡 your story is very VERY sad. No one deserves to be treated like this. Much love from Portland Oregon, USA ❤

What you held was a rocking ink blotter (un tampon buvard, in French) used to absorb the fresh ink left by fountain pens. If you google it, you'll see lots of photos. You could unscrew the round part on top in order to remove the part below and change the blotting sheet (papier buvard, in French) when it was too stained. I'm from France, my grandfather had one like this on his desk, and my Dad had another one, both wooden - I loved using them when I was a young girl and wrote letters or homework with ink, because it felt so special and kind of romantic :) I wish I still had it... I've seen some made of semi-precious stone, and of metal like pewter. I still use blotting sheets when I write greeting cards and want the ink to dry quickly.
❤ From Rainier , WA USA. The line for hanging clothes is a clothes line and the pins are clothes pins. 😊 You can't be expected to know the English word for every item, but your English just gets better with every awesome video! Thank you for all your work.

A mi me dan algo de miedo 😱 😨 😐
А мені іноді складно відчувати енергії тих хто там жив... вони пішли у той світ зі своїми мріями і бажаннями... іноді доводиться виконувати частину їх бажань...

Hello, Lesley and Danny! I really enjoyed the exploration of such an interesting house! I love Bernadette's works of art , the design of her bedroom and all the family items. The object used to hold your painting still while painting is called an easel.
Thank you for sharing this emotional life story! ❤
The map is definitely pre-1917. Finland was ceded to Russia in 1809 and they declared independence in 1917, so anytime between those dates. My guess would be early 1900s, maybe?
Love the video, as always! 🥰
The bedroom with 3 beds reminds me of the 3 bears.
А мені попелюшку і двох доньок мачухи...
Beautiful home. I wish someone would restore this French-style historic home. I love all the architectural features of the home both inside and out. That small guitar looked like a "banjo". Thank you for sharing. Cheers.
Hello! Pozdrawiam z Polski! Wasze fimy przenoszą w czasie...Az wam zazdroszczę! Super ! Rubcie to dalej!
Even abandoned, the house, the furnitures, the paintings, the piano and many stuffs still looks great. Amazing.
Easle is what they put paintings on. I absolutely love that bedroom. Its french country through and through. Its like out of a fairytale
It is eggs. Danny cracks me up the way he always has to be the one with answers!
The dried flowers over the fireplace in the first room (and others) are a plant called Honesty...
The piano is an upright, not a grand piano - grand pianos are the horizontal ones used to give concerts on stage. Yes, it was a tambourine, and an acoustic guitar, probably half-size, built for a child. And Castanets.
The metal basket in the kitchen shaped like a bulb is for eggs. The other one could be for vegetables or for deep-frying.
The flowers in the basket on the dressing-table of what you called the little girl's bedroom are dried lavender, to make the room smell nice and help keep moths at bay.😮
I love the dynamics between you two haha how one is more easily impressed and the other more serious and reserved. I couldn't help but notice some chalk writings that may have been a product of vandalism such as the MURDER one on the door and COME WITH ME.
Greetings from North Carolina. The clips on the wire in the beginning of the video are called clothes pins. That plants on the piano are called money plants because they resemble coins. The appliances in the kitchen look very small from today’s standards. The kitchen and bathroom is very small, just enough room for a toilet. This is a true time capsule. What a shame that the beautiful paintings and wonderful memories are left to decay. I bet at one time that house was filled with people making lovely joyful memories. I love the shape of the house, I prefer to call it a dollhouse because I had one as a child that looked identical to this house. This a wonderful video, thank you for sharing it. ❤
Muito interessante seu comentário. Saudações do Brasil.
Acho que ele colocou como casa da bruxa por estar inserida na floresta. É tudo muito interessante. E concordo com você a casa parece de bonecas. Fiquei encantada.
Is this house available for sale?

The artist died in 2000. this i really enjoyed I love seeing paintings that people do you can replace a building but you can not replace a painting by a painter and how they did the painting fantastic story and find .

One of the crafted lamps you questioned from a Casato bottle isn't a liquor, it's an Italian red wine, Chianti. I use this brand of wine to add to my homemade Italian Spaghetti sauce, a wine my grandmother had in her household. The empty bottles also make cool candle holders set atop the dining room table for an Italian supper.
Her paintings were very popular. I remember seeing her work on greeting cards and posters. She was very talented and created some hauntingly lovely works of art.💕☺️🇨🇦
Hello from North Carolina, USA
I wish this one was longer😊 Much love from Michigan
One thing that used to happen, at least in France, during the 1960s , 70s , 80s - people used to loose their entire inheritances due to gambling addiction. My father knows at least 4 french men who inherited castles etc and lost everything in casinos or betting on horses, ended up homeless... That could be an important factor in understanding why so many properties have been abandoned precisely during those decades.
Thats just sad😢
this series should be on a tv channel..
Can’t quite tell how small the string instrument you thought was a guitar; if it’s small, it would be a ukelele - a small instrument that is played in America & Hawaii. Love the house!!
This was my thought as well
In the music room, on the desk, the item that rocks and looks like s stamp is called an ink blotter. They're used to absorb excess ink when using a fountain pen. Finland declared its independence from the Russian Empire on December 6, 1917, shortly after the Bolshevik Revolution.
Dried plant on fireplace is called a money tree. We have them here in the states. What a glorious old home. Thanks for the history too!!💚💙✨
Thank you for sharing!!!! Enjoy every minute of it!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This house is really nice. I hope someone brings it around. I hope they found happness with there lives. You two do such a nice job every time. Stay safe we will see you soon
Glass palettes are quite useful, easy to mix your colors and to scrape off clean. I made two for myself … I love them
The dried up flowers that were in several rooms are what we in the states call Money plants. Love your excursions. I worry that 1 day you'll fall in 1 of those holes!
Really love this house, it’s so beautiful. Thanks you guys for showing this to us. ❤️👍 I would love to live there. I wonder why her children didn’t come back to get their mother’s paintings, it is so sad they are left.

I follow you for a couple years now and I see you guys are developing more and more in the storytelling! I like that very much and I notice I am even more inclined to watch the video's. Keep up the work at capturing amazing stories before they disappear!
A very charming home! Sad all alone.
🏡🧡🙌
I couldn't help but notice the fact that even though this magnificent house in the middle of the forest was abandoned for so many years, someone hadn't discovered it and how they hadn't taken such valuable objects to sell given that they are historic, rare and expensive. Even those who like or work with antique furniture... If someone entered this house during this period of abandonment, it was someone who really, who has character, just passed by, perhaps stayed the night and continued on their way. Because I believe there are no security guards or cameras there. Unless you have a neighbor who takes care. The story is beautiful, the wonderful house full of arts and a stunning landscape... I would like to imagine how happy this family could be in this place. Thank you for the video!
She was Born July 25 1928 died April 13 2000 .she really did good paintings 🖼️
Hi guys! The dried flowers are called honesty and before they dry up they are a bright mauvey colour. To dried part used to be green with seeds inside and you wait till they go brown then you rub them to get the papery look and seeds fall out but can be planted
The small vase on the end of the mantel, you should check the signature. Just the quick glance of it I think it matches be Daum, or other well known glass maker from 100 years ago. I collect art glass
I agree that a person with dementia would have notes for themselves throughout the house.
I love this place, quite whimsical!
What a wonderful story book style house. Thanks for taking us along guys! you're the best!

I would guess that the house has been abandoned owing to inheritance issues: if all the heirs fail to agree on, say, selling the home, then the property is left to fall into decay.
We have watched Your Videos for hours. Thank You for Sharing Your Videos.
I really enjoyed your work. Both of you approach your discoveries with such respect, humility, wonder, appreciation, sensitivity and insight. Thank you so much. I'm suddenly your devoted fan. Men like you give women like me hope. ❤
I think if someone bought this house with an nice reformation keeping the old style and some of the furniture it would be amazing ❤
Magnificent indeed. I would love to move in and restore it back to life. Thank you for sharing this treasure. I noticed the word "murder" was carved into the door...perhaps there was a tragedy that unfolded there and that's why it stands abandoned.
I'm so proud of my French heritage. We were one of the best that ever did it. Not a huge château but still a darling of house
Saya sangat suka bagaimana anda mereview bagian halaman rumah terlebih dahulu❤😊👍
It was lavender in the little girls bedroom on her vanity! Her little bedroom is so special!
Hello from New York! To hang up your wet clothes outside you put them on a clothesline and secure them with clothespins. The round flowers that you say last forever are what we call Chinese money. The painting in the girls bedroom looked like that house…with the four chimneys and turret on top. The guitar looked like an acoustic but smaller. Thanks for the video…hello to Jordie!
29:15 these notes were probably left for visitors (the children, grandchildren, etc) who would come by when the owner of the house (the painter) wasn't around
Such a wonderful video, such a magical place! You gentlemen do a great job …thank you❤❤❤
Danny, we love you know so much and adds a lot to the visit. But we miss the emotional pauses Leslie gives us, he knows how to share the experience. He makes the visit ours too.
Yes, Leslie has a special gift when explaining and making you feel like you are right there with them. You complete him Danny.
I feel as though Danny just argued with Lesley through this video. Danny is very knowledgeable but I miss just Lesley’s explanation of things.
its like a folk art style, not sure what time period they were built but artsy folky cutesy . A very sweet house
This house is so charming! It looks like someone attempted to rehab it but gave up. Did y'all see the word "murder" written in English on the cupboard trim? Spooky. There was more graffiti in the hallway above the door frame but I couldn't make it out. Such a shame people are so inconsiderate.
The house can be rehabilitated. They are special companies for that.
In the attic, you found newspapers called Les Aigles. It was about aviation. A well-known newspaper during and after ww2.
The piano, but I am not sure, is from an expensive range.
Clothespins for hanging laundry..hello from Locust Grove, Georgia USA
Seems like it was abandoned around the same time when the stock markets crashed back in 2008. And considering Bernadette's love for New York the family might have invested heavily in stocks and ended up with no money. The house was probably in need of major repairs and had to abandon their projects and hoped to come back to it later. They could easily sell this property and I'm sure somebody would fix it up but I imagine it's been in the family for so long it would hurt too much to give it away.
Maybe one day someone will eventually make it their second or main home again.
What a beautiful and cozy house. It is just charming. This is 1 of my favorites ❤. Thanks for sharing 👍 😊 ❤❤.
