Thank you! It’s been some nice weather out there I hobbled around before and tidied up those out of control tomatoes. Regretting it now but hoping I can be back out there soon
On the issue of compost or soil, I refuse to buy it anymore. We don't make enough either. So my last bed was just layers and layers (and layers!) of leaves, grass clippings, homemade compost, sugar cane mulch and cow manure with rock dust and one enormous bag of Searles premium potting mix to almost just 'top dress it' - it's been the most fertile bed we've had! I actually stockpile leaves during autumn in a chicken wire surround to top up beds this way during the year too 👍 It saves a bucket on compost that I'm always disappointed by.
It’s a very common problem. If we buy anything it’s mushroom compost and cow manure and we mix that together to make that top layer and underneath it’s just garden scraps. They have been the best beds here too. They do drop a bit but it doesn’t affect anything else. We also use a lot of the chicken run deep litter for new beds, which was once mulch, garden scraps and lawn clippings.
yes to the wildflower garden and another great video thanks. We've been busy in our garden pulling out somethings to make room for the coming season and expanding our gardens
Love your garden. I'm in Hervey Bay. Our garlic and onions did not do well at all. My onions completely failed. I hope that ankle of yours heals up soon.
Yeah I am guessing the wetter than normal winter hasn't helped the garlic/onions, although I lost all my onions to rats this year. I did plant some more seeds but I think it's too late for them to do anything now. And thanks re the ankle. It is still looking quite nasty.
Centenary Landscaping at Darra (West side sorry) have a range UltraGrow soils which they claim has a very high concentration of bio-inoculants creating a ‘living organism’. I haven’t tried it yet and can’t find any reviews but thought it worth mentioning. The premium one is $199/tonne. I hope your ankle gets better soon. Makes you appreciate your mobility when you haven’t it. 🤣
Just binge watching your content & saw you were asking about GOOD compost. I’ve recently filled my raised beds with quality soil from Red Soil Organics in Mooloo. They delivered to my front door as we ordered 5 cubes as it was recommended from my local organic garden group (I live near Bundy). They were amazing & I know you’d love their product as they use biodynamic techniques to inoculate the soil. Thank you for your amazing content! I’m hoping you’ll be able to add more videos, if you’re still able to, as you were right… there isn’t much info for subtropical veggie gardens online.
Thank you for the tour. I'm so jealous! But thanks for the super inspiration. I live in Tewantin, so lots should grow. Thanks again. [Hope your ankle mends soon]. SUBSCRIBED.
Yeah I have looked into it, there are a few rules, you have to apply as well - I think from memory it was plants no higher than 70cm, no hard infrastructure eg. garden beds and I just have to get neighbour sign off - which shouldn't be too hard as we only have 1 because we're surrounded by park.
Omg thank u... i just found ur channel an it's so good to hear another queenslander speak haha im a bit of a hermit an ive just realised I must be watching way too many American gardening channels ...crikey.. on a more serious note, I see ur experimenting with different tomatoes, do u have a fav yet of the large style ones in this climate? im just north of u near maryborough an have an absolute abundance of cherry tomatoes nearly all year round but cant find the same consistency in anything else yet ...maybe the cherries have set the bar too high i dunno.... oh an if u want a good flower for ur front garden put zinnas in, they grow really well need no care an the combinations of colours from cross pollination that occur each season is truely amazing... cheers an keep up the good work
Thanks for stopping by! Re Tomatoes, it’s hard to go by cherries for us especially over the warm/wet months so we try to grow the bigger ones over winter. I do have favourites - Roma style I love Sam Marzano. Big beef steak ones mortgage lifter, tropic, black Krim is also good here. We’re trialling Scorpio and a few determinate ones - burney gem and Florida basket this year that have been given good ratings for humid climates. For midsize I love pink Thai egg and also tigerella.
Ahh perfect i shall try some if not all of them in the future ... I appreciate ur ability to thoroughly convey information its a very good skill to have ...thanks for sharing 😀
Thank you for the tour! Prompted me to start planning ahead for Spring. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Oh interesting, I wonder if they just add the inoculants or also test it for the right guys in there? So hard to know what you’re getting

Thanks for watching, yeah it's a good time of year for us right now. Not looking forward to another wet summer though.
Make sure you check with council before planting the nature strip, some of them can be a pain in the rear end.

And re the zinnias I have them self seeding around the place, a few summers ago my front garden was just a sea of them. They are very good!
We are growing the bigger tomatoes this spring because we had so much failure from that rain in May 🙄
