Love of Dirt
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 มี.ค. 2018
Hi I am Nicki, I am on a mission to grow as much food as possible in our regular suburban block.
We live in the Subtropical climate in Australia (Just north of Brisbane) so our growing conditions are quite unique and often at times challenging.
Our growing style is a mix of many modalities- we have no dig beds, raised beds, pots and containers and aquaponics, but we are very much an organic micro farm.
In 2020 we started to curate a collection of subtropical friendly plants and now grow and supply our seeds to other growers in the Australian subtropics.

That's a great setup I've seen so many of these bathtub worm farm setups this has got to be the most aesthetic and functional one
You like our screen door lid? 😂 it works well
Awesome and I’m sure they moved to a different location in your garden 👍👍. Have a super weekend hope it’s warm, Ali 🌞🇨🇦
I’d say so, they don’t hang around if the conditions aren’t right and the garden is right there
I reckon chopping up the food for them is the ONLY way to go!! Especially in Brisbane.
Yeah they churn through it when you do. Less risk of soldier flies finding it. They can have my compost bin but I don’t want them heating up the worm farm.
If you are still having issues with your worm bath tub, I follow a channel called plant obsessed. I’ve been following her wedge method in the dual 50 gallon plastic bin. I have had great success with shredded cardboard soaked in blended vegetable/fruit/plant matter pre composted. I started with around 3000 worms and they have basically doubled in volume. I feed frozen scraps every two weeks and the tub is just one continuous production line from the feeding end to the finished end.
I’ll check it out, thanks! This one worked really well, I just didn’t feed them for over 18 months. Be good to have it up and running again.
@@loveofdirt yeah I enjoy looking in the worm farm every couple of weeks, it’s amazing how much work they do. Pick up my first fully established bee hive tomorrow. Very excited
She's good
@@aussieallrounder6018 definitely. I get mesmerised watching her tend to the worm bins. 👍🏼
Great video. I also use tomahooks. They are a fantastic way to trellis tomatoes. I also use them for cucumbers some times. I am in Central NSW and we battle fruit fly with our tomatoes in summer. This year I am growing some of my tomatoes in a netted area. I hope it helps! 😀
I am sure it will, I usually net the entire bed with cherry tomatoes.
I wish I'd started my zucchini earlier! I'm worried it's going to be too hot for everything very soon. I'm pleased to have found someone local'ish to follow. (QLD is soo big!) Thanks 😊
Yeah I am happy I chucked some seeds in July for my zucchini but having said that the August one is catching up in growth. I’ll have them coming out of my ears soon enough.
@loveofdirt the first year I grew them, years ago back in the UK. I had no idea how prolific they were, I supplied all my neighbours, and my poor son still won't eat them anymore and he's 30 now haha.
@@rho1360 hahaha zucchini trauma
Just found your channel. A Hervey Bayer here, so subtropical 😅 I’ve planted 50 tomato plants last month. Hoping for a big harvest later in spring. It’s hopeless here in Herveybay through summer. Toooo hot, humid and bugs lols
Whoa! That’s a lot of tomatoes, are you planning on canning?
Awesome great to find more Aussie content… I’m in north east NSW so also subtropical and just stating so learning a lot from you thanks
Thanks for watching 😊 glad you’re finding them helpful
I live on the Gold Coast and have only just started vegetable gardening. Your videos are a wonderful resource as I learn. Thank you.
Glad you find them helpful!
G'day mate Why did you pull your garlic out so soon And where are you located Thanks Tim
I was waiting for this comment, surprised it didn’t come up earlier TBH. It’s glenlarge subtropical variety it takes 6 months to grow unlike your other standard varieties that take around 8-9. Plant March harvest September. We’re in SEQLD, it’s the only variety we’ve successfully grown here and if you leave it any longer the cloves break off.
I also started in the can o worms too and now have a bath tub and I’m about to start a second bathtub. Handy having a neighbour who does house renovations and needs somewhere to dispose of old bathtubs 😁
Definitely handy when you get them for free.
I love your channel! Your content is so relatable being here in SEQ. Keep up the great videos! 🐞🐌🐛
Thank you ☺️
Tomatoes are looking great! Can't wait to get ours in the ground but it's a bit cooler here in Melbourne!
Yeah it’s Melbourne cup day for you guys isn’t it?
Hi there. I'm on the Sunshine Coast and wondering if I can grow Feijoas, my all time 2nd favourite after mangoes. What do you reckon my chances are - too hot and humid?
I’ve personally not grown them but I’ve seen them about. They do attract fruit fly though
Surprised at how much you jammed into that corn, lettuce, bean etc bed. How will they all grow with density like that ? Clearly you are confident in this. The sweet potato cutting came from where ? A bed still holding some ? I grew in ground and took lot out. Interested in where you " stored" your vine ? Thanks.
Yeah I always have them popping up! And yeah I plant very densely to optimise space, that bed actually isn’t as full as others I do 😂 but the lettuce will be done before the corn gets going and the beans will hang over the edge.
Does anybody have any tips for dealing with the dreaded QFF!
Check out my video on preparing the onslaught of bugs - it has my fruit fly tips.
@loveofdirt very informative thanks. Annoying they banned the thing that works, I'll persevere though.
That heat wave totally sucked!!
Yep!
I have got to try this.
Yeah I think they are the better option.
Nicki this is my TH-cam channel showing my progress. Not as flash as your channel but it’s a record of my progress. th-cam.com/video/m3ZmKw08TxA/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Hello Nicki, fellow North Brisbane gardener here. Just found your channel and am enjoying your content. I’ve embarked on a garden on my 3/4 acre using permaculture principles. Really looking forward to seeing what a local grows.
Nice!
@@loveofdirt I originally worked in raised beds but I wasn’t very successful. This time I’m digging swales and filling with wood chips for my pathways. I’ve been amazed at how many mushrooms pop up as a result. I am also using low dig. I compost everything, have a bathtub worm farm and I’m in the process of getting both native and European bee hives. I buy most of my seeds from Happy Valley seeds, I’m still working out the best way to get the best germination and have had some success and some failures. I’m planting as many flowers as I can. So far Cornflowers, Zinnias, Cosmos, snapdragons and sunflowers have been my most successful. I’ve had Chickens before and intend on getting them again when I can afford to build a decent coop.
That’s awesome you’ve had luck with swales! We have tree roots getting into everything so it’s raised beds/wicking beds and aquaponics for us. I’d love to get bees but our block is too small for council regulations. We will be getting native bees hopefully this year, just waiting for a fence to be built. And our coop is falling down so we need to redo that.
@@loveofdirt yeah native bees are awesome, I’ll be putting a couple of hive in the garden. As for the European bees I have to build a small fence at the bottom corner of my property to keep my inquisitive boxers out so they don’t get stung. It’s been good watching your channel as you are following a similar path as me in the same climate, only a little further along the journey. Keep up the good work
@@loveofdirt by the look of the size of your yard you should be able to keep at least one bee hive. Any block over 600m2 you can keep bees. Both Brisbane and Moreton shires are pretty much the same from what I can see.
What variety of garlic did you grow, thanks. I’m in Logan so it’s great to see the success you’ve had with your garden in our region.
Glenlarge
I'd love to know what your watering system is all about. I see the brown tubing in the bed, and just curious about how you set that up?
Ok I’ll do a video :) a few people have asked the same question now.
Just ordered some seeds from you after being motivated by this video. Where to put them? My garden is still full of winter vegetables but will tuck them in somewhere. In sub tropical NSW so find your information a perfect guide. Thank you
I feel like I am always trying to decide where to put stuff!
Enjoyed immensely. Will be a regular viewer 🎉
Thank you ☺️
My first time seeing one of your videos. Some great tips in there and sone timely reminders for my garden👌 Thanjs for sharing ☺️ I wish I was organised enough (and healthy enough) to be planting out a bed every month! I'm inland Qld, dry climate with frosts in winter. But tomatoes do best here in the cooler weather, before temps get too hot. I have some small varieties in pots on my verandah that are beginning to bear fruit. Fruit fly is forever annoying, but I stick to only a small number of plants and bag as many fruit as I can so I don't need to destroy as much affected fruit. Last summer my health was too poor to keep up with watering the garden. And it has started deteriorating again so I'm keeping things as low maintenance as possible this year and trying not to get too attached to anything. Great to see what you are starting and planting out in yiur subtropical climate!
Have you tried wicking beds? I think they do well in dry hot and I find them more hands off. Setup is a pain though. I don’t normally do tomatoes over summer too, usually one cherry and that’s it.
@@loveofdirt I have done them on a small scale in the past. Unfortunately too much effort for me to manage these days.
Yeah fair enough, their setup is full on.
I think it’s cool that you have a monthly bed 👍. My tomatoes are not ripening as they did last year even with all our heat. 😂😂 they went wild I gave up trimming. Great update thank you for sharing, Ali 🌞 SW 🇨🇦
I am sure I’ll get to that point on the trimming front 😂 shame they haven’t been ripening. I hear that a lot from people in colder climates.
@@loveofdirt strangely enough it’s been high 2’s to low 30’s c here for months we are in a mass drought with maybe 2 days of rain June July and Aug and now Sept but it could also do too dry and hot for them, who’d have thought that was a thing 🤦♀️ (Langley BC 🇨🇦)
Great reminders & motivation for w.end ahead👌
Thanks!
that recent week of heat activated way to many bugs and I was already battling grubs and rats on my cherry tomotos. on the plus side all the seeds I got from you last week have sprouted cheers
It certainly has! I think I even saw some pumpkin beetles today, don’t normally see those until a little later in the year.
I have good seed starting success with this that I have found works best for me in Central Queensland, after much trial and error... 1 part sieved worm castings (I just cycle a tray in my worm hotel for this purpose) 2 parts sieved compost 3 parts vermiculite (I buy 100L bag from elders rural supplies for $35 bucks ish)
That’s similar to me but I add a bit of coco coir, and at the moment my worm farm is out of action. Time to get it up and going again I think 🪱
Love your trellis set up for your tomatoes...I guess it's back to Bunnings for me.
😂 story of my life but I don’t think they sell the tomahooks and trellis clips, I had to get mine from active vista in Tassie
Looking great. I planted early with a heat mat this year as I want to harvest before it gets too hot. We will see if that works for me.
Awesome, what did you plant and when? I kinda wish I did that with my capsicums. Having said that my bed isn’t ready for them yet anyway.
@@loveofdirt capsicum was the most necessary. I also planted pumpkins, zucchini, cucumbers and golden midget watermelon. Planted them in the first week of August. As soon as they were 50% up, I transferred them to under a grow light of it was cold and overcast or morning sun if it was shining. I will certainly be doing it again. Cheers.
Yeah it’s a good plan, might do the same next year 🪴
We're in SEQ. After last year v mild "Winter", we rolled the dice and sowed honeybees, tigerella, black cherry and roma seeds in April on heated pad under led grow light in the garage. After transplanting in July, they've survived well and are producing heavily now. It was another warm winter! (quite wet too). My thinking now is to consider it as the "coolest spring"😁 In July sowed sungold and more romas. The plan is to have succession romas and constant supply of cherry toms🤩 Time to start the chillies now... The overwintered jalopenos, serranos and anaheims all have blooms on them now😎
Yeah I normally do my big heirloom tomatoes over winter, less disease/pests. It’s more starting the new batch of capsicums.
Looking good. Well done 😊
Thank you!
Garden looks lush and abundant. Go girl🌈🌻🌈. I’ve just got a load of tuckeroo mulch ie more leaf than chips...do you use it on beds immediately or wait ...if so, how long? I was thinking to make paths between beds with it. Lettuce...I’ve had success by putting different thicknesses of black shade cloth over it to hold it back/protect from the sun. I even used thick drawer liner plastic (with holes). That delayed it so it was harvested a few weeks after the lighter shade cloth. ..great to stagger the crop. I’ve no irrigation and I note each of your beds has it. Not a clue on how to do it. Have you or can you do a video on how to install it. Thanks 😁
I’ve not heard of that mulch before. I usually use sugar cane on beds and wood chip on paths around fruit trees. If mulching I usually go straight in unless I am waiting for seeds. I always add a bit of organic xtra (slow release fertiliser) and water in with seaweed extract. We’ll bring that shade cloth out for sure later in the season. As for irrigation someone else asked about this, I have in-depth instructions of how I do it inside dirt lovers but I might do a quick video on the setup, it’s pretty simple.
I'm pretty much doing the same with my seeds. They're no good sitting in a box.
I don’t know why I am still holding onto some, I really do need to clear them out.
I planted everything at the wrong time and all together in pots . haha I might actually do a few things right next , lolol
Oh no! What did you plant at the wrong time?
@@loveofdirt Almost everything , hahaha I am still learning what month to plant what , lol Mostly cabbage and things like that
Cabbage might be ok but you'll be battling with bugs :)
@@loveofdirt I have them in a cage , I was told it was too late because of the heat.. not the case? I'm in brissy
I find cabbage aren’t too bad, they do take forever though, if you can keep the water/nutrients up to them they should be fine.
We did the same here in SW Canada 🇨🇦 it was no cooler May and June but just went straight to heat, it was still 32c yesterday 🥵. Beds look amazing and the bees will love the brassica flowers. Stay cool, Ali 🌞🇨🇦
32c there would feel like 40c here that’s crazy!
I'm so impressed with your garlic! Glen Large? I think we missed spring and went straight into summer. Blimey! You are a goddess! I'm definitely gunna get me some of those fruit fly traps. Great clip. Cheers, Andy
Yep glenlarge it’s the only one we’ve had success with here, not our best but better than the past few years.
Seedlings I'd been fighting to keep warm in Toowoomba suddenly bolted to leggy and falling over. So I guess I'm starting that again. Thankfully only a few flowers.
Oh that’s disappointing. I did notice a lot of my rocket was starting to bolt this afternoon too.
You could try putting some PVC pipe around your paw paw trunk when it’s fruiting to stop possums climbing them 🤔 It worked for our mango tree but it was in the open with nothing else around
I think they jump on it from the roof, it’s like the direct path from their nest to our roof.
Hi nicki, all looking there. Have you ever tried growing cassava. It grows well over summer and doesn't take up much space. The verigated type is a great looking plant and can be found and ross creek tropical at certain times. Cheers
I feel like I have but gave up as we didn’t use it, I might be thinking of QLD arrowroot though.
Your garden is looking good 👏🏽 I agree with you, we skipped spring & went straight into summer 😅 (we’re just north of you). Thanks for your tip about the fruit fly trap as I ordered one over the weekend. Hope it arrives soon. Thanks for your great update.
Oh great, let us know if it works for you!
It's so good to get a back yard garden channel for Brisbane suburbs. I didn't get pineapples either but I got a heavy crop of Mandarins and Lemonades. Also Mulberries are cropping heavily. My bananas have done absolutely nothing for over a year. No ground crops this year though. I'm a lazy gardener lol. Thanks for a very helpful channel. I appreciate how much work goes into it.
Maybe the wetter winters threw the pineapples off? We haven’t committed to a lot of trees yet as we’re moving stuff around all the time, can’t wait to increase the citrus trees. Thanks for watching.
@@loveofdirt Thank you too 😊
I was in chermside bananas never did well now I am palm beach on a hill they grow absolutely crazy same as paw paw and pineapples
I haven’t had issues with bananas, we got two big ones during winter. Pawpaw I’ve struggled with, I think it is the location though
@@loveofdirt Location for me too, I think. My nanies get a lot of arvo shade so I'm going to replant the suckers into a more full sun position. I usually get volunteer pawpaw but they've been quiet as well. Just got to keep trying, I guess lol
Which variety of sweet potato do you grow please Mine were the vines in the same space as yours, they kept going every where Just wondering how you managed the vines Thanks
I am not sure what the varieties are specifically, I have 2 types though. One is standard orange, the other is purple skin, white flesh. They do require ‘maintenance’ so they don’t take over, lots of relocating when they surface in the wrong spots. I’ve found these little raised beds are good for keeping them in control, I usually cut any bits off that try to escape.
I've had great success with purple skin/white flesh here in Brisbane. I think that's the best for our conditions. Plus it tastes really good
Last year was the first time growing it, we’ve always had success with the yellow ones and I agree it’s nicer tasting. I’ll have to test out which performs better this year .
@@loveofdirt did u get many please
I didn't weigh them, but I filled 2 x 65L pots. I did weight them when we did a 1x1 lasagne bed and we got about 13kgs from that.
This is awesome please make videos of how they’re going. Also do you think it’s too late to plant these in September? Seems like it’s a lot hotter now. Reckon most of them will still last?
Update is coming today ☺️ Yes you could do this in September (right up to January) - just ditch the row of carrots.
I have bromage seeds germinate so I planted them everywhere along with your flower seeds I purchased. Only been in our house 4 months and everything has grown beautifully 😊
You know I totally forgot about it borage! I need to get some in. So glad to hear that re the seeds :)
😮 looking much more organised bet you feel better 💐 😊
It needs another clean up now!
Just subscribed cheers Gold Coast
Thank you!
I lost every single blue cornflower as it bloomed one year, after 3 weeks I spotted the culprit and was rewarded by 7 juvenile bowerbirds taking up my bird bath all spring. Now I plant them all the time in hopes they come back 😁
I’d be planting all the blue things 😂
Good stuff 😊😊😊
Thank you ☺️
