My Mum passed away yesterday and I listened to this song flat out on my kitchen floor singing at the top of my lungs volume at 10 bawling my eyes out.
And now I’ll be ok.
💙
My God the writing on this song is extraordinary. If you can’t feel the deep love of all that is human in these words then you’re on the wrong side of the grass.
She is such an incredible songwriter, and a beautiful singer. And a really nice, cool human being.
At 73 still on the right side of the grass and listening
This is one of the Finest comments I have ever read 🙏🙏God Bless You
She wrote it to her kids😊
@@monalove7255
I believe you are thinking of Humble and Kind , she wrote that to her kids 💜💜
“And I’m older now then he was then.”
What a great line
than
Buried my momma today....thanks for the words
"Time is a thief, pain is a gift..."
Powerful.

At 63 and grappling with age this hit home hard. What a great song and i love that house and barn and land as well. Looking back can often be far too painful, but this song eased it a little..thanks
your soul is still young.. we all have that in common.. we still feel young when our fav song comes on.. or we see old movies... keep laughing and dance and stay young at heart and 63 is still so young really when you think about it...❤
@@ladeacarr4245 Thank you ..that was very thoughtful...I try and think young at least... when I complain about getting old it's just because I don't feel 20 still...lol...I still get out and doing stuff... I ture with a classic band occasionally,,still ride my motorcycle, and still work hard.
But thanks for the encouragement as well.
This is something I stress about in m head now and I worry sometimes for my mental health once I am “a senior citizen” (not necessarily per the age just when I am there, but the general ages) think mentally, one never feel different from their mental self at/around 25 years just more wise, worn, and forgetful. My anxiety is because Alzheimer’s is rampant through my recent family line, both parents families. I can’t think on it too long as it is almost crippling in some ways for me.
Forgetting it all. I just can’t
@@hannuhlynn My grandfather suffered dementia My dad never lived long enough to have developed it ,,he died at my current age ... (even odd to say that to myself right now).from prostate cancer caught to late .
I lost my mom this last year,, Mortality is always looming but i don't let it stop me at all just it crops up here and there..Just noticing i can't just do the things i used to.. hurt my back picking up a pencil and was like "WHaT THE F man!" just a dam pencil..lol.
Yeah one can't let that anxiety take one over too so i hear ya...OH by the way just watched video all about dementia patients and chronic sinus infections. once cleared the infections they actually with the right chemical therapy reversed it in some patients.
Seems there's a chemical marker inside the brains of these patients that they traced down to what was being released by these fungus and bacterial infections in the sinuous. I suffered debilitating migraines for years from it..nothing worked antibiotics just ruined my gut.. What i stumbled upon by accident that worked was plain old Iodine in saline solution...For the past 6 months i have actually felt better than i had in the last 3 years. (plus long haul covid fatigue)
Cilantro juice helps rid the toxins so i juice it occasionally (learned that from welding) leaches heavy metals from your nerve system...
Anyway .. Life is what it is and i try and embrace the old age as long as i can stay healthy as possible.
My daddy just hit 80, and this sums up our life. Enjoy your years, you have several left. 💕
Lori McKenna is an absolute treasure straight from heaven. I love ALL her songs
Time is a thief, pain is a gift
The past is the past, it is what it is
Every line on your face tells a story somebody knows
That's just how it goes
You live long enough and the people you love get old
Time is a theif and I'm 74. Don't know how many years I have left, but I will keep listening to this song
"....and you still think he's 45 and he still thinks that you're a kid..." 😓
That is a a hell of a lyric. Wow.
It's hard to realize people are getting older when you see them all the time. Then one day, they are old. And I can't figure out how that happened.
When a song gives you goosebumps, you know it's good.
Babies grow up and houses get sold... so simple yet it hits like a rock
"Every line on your face is a story that somebody knows"
I couldn't stop crying the first time I heard tis song. I'm 17, and now that I'm coming to the point in which I'm going to college soon, I'm trying to be grateful for all the times that I'm reminded I'm still a kid. I just wish I realized how quickly time went by at a younger age.
Hey Kate, same here. Where did all the time go? After several spins of this song, I'm noticing the lines on my parents' faces more and more.
If you want to explore Lori's music, I suggest these tracks for you: "The Tree" & "The Way Back Home". All the best with college! 👩🎓
Wait until you wake up at 31 and remember this song, reflect on where you’ve gotten to and remember the moments you can’t get back. Enjoy it. Be a kid. Don’t take the next 17 for granted. Make a life just like he did.
Just remember this song at 73 you have a long life to live
@@hannuhlynn Waking up at 73
I so wish I would’ve spent much more quality time with those who have passed before me. I should’ve asked all kinds of questions and taken all kinds of notes. Looking back now, in my early 50s, it’s those people I miss most.
I'm 59 now.....it went by so fast....
Like the wink of an eye.
My mom sent me this song and man it hits home. With my father passed away and my brothers and I all grown up I can relate to this on so many levels. Love you momma and to father I hope your watching down on us with a big smile.
Pain is a gift and so is this song.
For me, growing up, there were no pickups, side roads, cigarettes or whiskey. So why is it every time I hear this song my eyes fill with tears? It's because Lori McKenna is a genius, that's why. Heard "People Get Old" on CBC Radio two days a go and I can't stop playing it.
Bc it was written from the heart. That's why it hits you there.
You are correct....it's a
a universal experience
I am the same way. So good.
66 today. And, I really do feel 45-ish. My children really are grown. And, as Lori says, 'it is what it is'. Blessed to be alive and married to Donna for the past 42 years. On April 21 / just like every day of my life / I look to the sky and I thank God and my parents for this incredible gift of life they've given to me. Shine on Grandma Moon.
Someone peeling onions in here?!
This song gave me the major feels too
I’ve got tears in my eyes. Thank you so much for this beautiful song.
So do I 💯
I don’t why I have never heard of Lori McKenna before. But today, I watched an interview that Ashley McBryde did in Scotland and she mentioned her as one of her influences. Now, I see why. This song brought to tears and that’s usually one of many indicators of a good country song. So thank you Ashley for turning me on to some fantastic country music throughout your interview.
She is a wonderful singer, songwriter, and composer. I just love everything she does.
You don't get writing like this in country very often anymore. what a breathe of fresh air!
It's interesting how every person can relate to this song in some way or another.
It happens to everyone.
Yea We all get old. Didn't think so when I was 20. Now I'm 73 and have outlived my parents by 10 years. We all get old.
My folks are 68 this year and I'm expecting my first and this song is just so perfect.
Thank you for acknowledging what no one on demographically driven playlists ever would admit.
Yes, especially when those songs preach a “live fast die young” mentality.
Well said, Mary.
Just heard this on the radio today - never heard it before. Had to listen again because the lyrics hit. At work and need to focus but DAMN!
" Every line on your face tells a Story somebody knows" ..........Man
Still listening to this at 74
This couldn't describe my dad any better. Such a beautiful song. I'd like to dedicate it to my own beautiful father. Thank you so much for stirring up such wonderful memories of my childhood.

Today is the first time I heard this song. It's a big winter storm here but my heart is warm now. This is a song I can see, and hear, and feel ... it's beautiful like a spring day. Thank you, Lori McKenna.
One of the best ever. I think of my kids, grandkids, and parents every time I hear it. Thanks, Lori!
Yup can,t back time
I cry every time I hear this song and I can't wait to hear it again.
It is pure and beautiful
Keep coming back and cry
One of the prettiest songs ever written. Thank you
Everytime l think she has written the best song ,she writes another one.
this is such a .... I don't even have words to describe this. It freezes you in time and makes you really think. I've had my fair share of stories. when I was younger I always said to myself that I will never be like my parents when I grow up in a resentful way. I am 25 now and maybe not old enough to say I have evolved but every now and then I find myself doing things that my parents always do. the lyrics "You'll be walking down the hallway turning off every light switch" just hits home so hard. I love my parents and I will be glad to turn out to be even one tenth of the kind, loving and devoted people they are. Thank you Lori for the emotional journey you have taken us through.
Lori McKenna is such an incredible singer-songwriter. Her voice & these *words*-these *words*! Doesn’t get better.
Wow! Now that song is something to be proud of. A true musical masterpiece/ treasure!
Turning 40 this year. This really hits the spot.😭
Breath of fresh air, what a songwriter, she's fantastic
First time hearing this and it reached deep, damn. This is an amazing song. Paint a lifetime in 3 minutes. Now this is country music. Wow.
It truly is. The masters George, Merle and others would be proud of this one.
Mrs. McKenna has been my hero for 20 years... Rock on!
Mine too! 1997!

"Someone said, "Youth is wasted on the young"
I spilled every last drop of time that summer in the sun
My daddy had a Timex watch
Cigarette in his hand and a mouthful of scotch
Spinnin' me around like a tilt-a-whirl on his arm
Houses need paint, winters bring snow
Kids, come on in before your supper gets cold
Collection plates and daddy's billfold
And that's how it goes
You live long enough, people get old
I sat up right beside him in the cabin of that truck
Goin' thirty miles-an-hour down a side road talkin' 'bout the fish we caught
And I'm older now than he was then
If I could go back in time, I would in a second
To his beat-up blue jeans and a t-shirt with the sleeves cut off
Houses need paint, winters bring snow
Kids growin' up and sneekin' out the window
Hittin' every small-town dirt road
And that's how it goes
You live long enough and people get old
Yeah, people get old
Daddy keeps busy in the aftenoons playin' cards by himself
And he shouldn't be shovelin' that first snow, but you know he won't take the help
Full of pride and love, he don't say too much but hell, he never did
And you still think he's forty-five and he still thinks that you're a kid
One day you'll find yourself sayin' the things that he said
You'll be walkin' down the hallway, turnin' off every light switch
When you twirl your kids in your arms
Before you know it, it won't take too long
They'll be runnin' off makin' a life just like you did
Houses need paint, winters bring snow
Nothin' says "love" like a band of gold
Babies grow up and houses get sold
And that's how it goes
Time is a thief, pain is a gift
The past is the past, it is what it is
Every line on your face tells a story somebody knows
That's just how it goes
You live long enough and the people you love get old"
💛 thankyou for your such soul-deep and beyond beautiful lyrics lori.
The words touch the right places . Beautiful poem, beautiful song
I always heard it as
"spinning me around like he could tilt the world on his own..."
could be wrong, but that's how I hear it.

Just listened to this for the first time. Wow! Wiping my tears off my face. Thanks for a beautiful song.
this song is so ridiculously slept on
What a song, makes me miss my Dad. Gone 11 months ago tomorrow. ❤️
Still coming back to this song. Her references to her Dad really hit home. 🙏🏻
The best songwriter that’s ever lived in my time. Her empathy and knack for storytelling, truly connecting with life experiences is incomparable. Love her so much. Has been my favorite for a decade and I hope she keeps writing for many more.
Oh, my goodness, what a lovely and true song. It should be sung right next to John Prine's "Hello, in There, Hello." Sets me to crying for sure.
I heard this for the first time when she played it live at the Ryman. Blown away and this video does it justice. Feel it to the bone!
Masterful storytelling and delivery of a simple, powerful message. Great work Lori!
This is a gem. Thank You, Lori.

Lori is brilliant. Oh, she shined at Merlefest. She was probably the best I ever heard at the CABIN stage. Great writer, performer, musician.
What a beautiful song! I'm going to spend the day trying to learn it on the guitar.
Turning 60 in August...I'm a Grandmother now....great song Lori...

i'm pretty hard on women in folk & country music but Lori hit gold with this one. going in my hiking folk where only the best goes
Absolutely wonderful. Your voice is so special
REALLY good songwriting, execution, production. Stunningly heartfelt without being schmaltzy or fake.
This song hurts. I'm all choked up trying to type this.
Just keep true to yourself. I'm old but not gone
Beautiful. Storytelling at it's finest!

Cant stop time All we have is memories
Finally. A country song.
Thanks “Aaronland” for this treasure!
Amazing songwriting. The best thing from Stoughton since the Town Spa.
Beautiful lyrics.
Wonderful song about the truths of life, as I'm knocking on the door of 50, I think about this stuff everyday.
Fees like all here are feeling - this was written from Lori’s heart but it’s also written from mine.
“Talking about the fish we caught” was my childhood especially topped with
“To his beat up blue jeans and t shirt with the sleeves cut off” … my dad is 60 this year and still … this is his wardrobe for the GA weather.
I’m already finding myself “turning off every light switch” which is amazing to hear from her as this is a running joke with my immediate family - my dad has he grew into what his dad before him was. The lights are the specific point of the joke.
Thank you Lori. I can’t say how grateful I am for this song and your talent.
Keep your dad in your heart. I'm 73 and don't know how much longer I have in this world. We all get old and then we are gone
time is a thief - youth is wasted on the young....
...man this song breaks my heart. Seeing how people and I get old does.
Wow, this song really hits hard after losing my mom 4 months ago 😢
Just live her in your heart and she will never die
