I restore furniture as a hobby so I tend to watch a lot of restoration video's. I have watched a number of your videos and I am saddened to say that you have really let yourself down with this one. You do tend to stretch the truth in your video titles quite a bit. You showed no respect to this item. You hammered and banged and scraped and twisted. Instead of removing something gently, such as the hinge pin, you tried your hardest to beat the pin into a pretzel.
I will give you props for doing something you love and, in the end, have a passably good item you can sell at the local flee market. But please stop using the term "Restoration" because your items are anything but but restored.
Why bothering using paint stripper, sandblasting and countless of hour of work, and than angle grinding and ruin it at all?
Not to mention spray painting directly on the surface without using a proper primer and watersanding it first.
Appreciate the effort, but this is not restoration, it's "patching up" work.
exactly what i wanted to say + he already scratched it all, should had add rubber grommets, not that it matters, the paint job is tribble, could have gotten the same results with a pressure washer and a spry can, and it would take me 10 min to do so
Very lazy "restoration"...half assed job all round.
I hate to criticize but you are correct... hearing that freshly painted surface scrape along the bench sent shivers up my spine, scraping the old paint off with a metal tool. This is basically a clean and repaint, wouldn't call it a restoration to it's former glory.

This was more destroying fine piece of equipment, just thorough cleaning would be sufficient. Watching this was pain!

Disassembling, half-assed cleaning and reassembling is about all this dude is adequate at. Better people, like TysyTube, perform better work than this clown.

I’ve watched many other restoration videos and by far this was my first with you and I have never seen someone so careless with their work, all that sliding and scraping your finished product all over that rough surface.

when you'll get better at restoring, restore this again. take your time, think about it, think again, take your time again and do it.
No one minds watching someone learn and taking time to develop skills, but when you claim things like ‘AMAZING’ outcome’ when it’s clear that you don’t yet have the skills in restoration then don’t be surprised when people are critical.
Also the camera is good but the sounds of scraping, hammering, scratching etc are overbearing.
I think he confuses the word "amazing." I believe he means "shit."

A very callous, and reckless disassembly. Too hasty, nothing here was methodological. I regret watching it. A restoral dictates that the item has to appear in its original condition when new. This was nothing of the kind. Disappointing to say the least.
Hello,
Good restoration in general but you missed some details that could improve your final result.
First, bluing the screw or some rustproof treatment on them.
Second polish the glass
Third paint the inner part of the lamp with something reflective for example silver paint
Fourth the cable fitting should be improved adding a cable gland with waterproof gasket/oring.
In general it's good but only for exhibition.
If you want to put it outside i suggest you to introduce this kind of treatment next time.

I agree with the other comments, doesn't seem thorough especially when you started sandblasting when one of the label plates was still attached...
Totally agree.
BUT. At least he sandblasted. Most of these restoration channels don't sandblast to clean up old items, even though that clearly is the proper tool for the job.
This guys channel fails in logic, common sense, skill and talent.

@@dwayneglover1799 I don’t disagree with you on that but I would’ve preferred if he had stayed true to its original manufacture paint colour and not red and black also when they’re painting back then they wouldn’t have like a glossy kind of finish they would have more like a matte finish

Was a bit surprised that the inside didn’t get a reflective / chrome spray over to increase the light output. But always opportunity to add that later.

No Idea what you smoked, but it must have been good stuff ! Reasonable result, though.
Less aggressiveness. More caress. The process is more valuable than the result. Thus the result will reflect the process.

Exactly. 5 minutes after painting it you already scuffed up and damaged it in several places. Maybe be more careful next time

Mixed feelings on this one. Nice restore but should have kept the hammer tone green paint
Should have repaired the socket, earthed the lamp maybe, chrome plated the inside of the parabolic reflector and made sure the new bulb was at the focal point. Other details missed were thoroughly cleaning and polishing all the bolts, nuts and washers and the wire of the latches. The colours you chose were ludicrous.

Stopped watching when you viciously hammered that hinge pin with a drift ! Geezus ! Surprised you didn't shear off both hinge ears from the light bucket casting. Too aggressive ! Project is probably a mess at the end ? ! !

I always wonder how many of these restorations are genuine. A perfectly good lamp, axe, or whatever is thrown into a bucket of battery acid for a week, and then 'restored'.

Grinder marks, sharp screwdiver blade & scraper, unprotected pliers? That's gonna leave a mark ! Primer/Surfacer would be a help. Hammertone paint, like the original, is in a spray can nowadays....
...And then put back in the same busted ass light socket, instead of attempting to find a useable replacement.
That scraping sound gave me the same vibe as fingernails on a board

One would think that by the time you launch a TH-cam channel, it may be wise to know your tools. I've seen 14 of this guys videos and it seems he watched a couple of TysyTube videos and said "shit, I can do that."

Not so much restored as cleaned! Replacing a broken light fitting??? Also, always put pivot pins in from the top, that way even if you lose the split pin it won't fall out, and maybe a coat of silver on the inside of the light might have helped??

To be fair, no restoration work was done here. this is a cleanup job, and not a good one at that. its a shame; such a nice light.

This was not the best. Start from the beginning. Use the right tools for the job. Practice on less valuable items first. Plenty of videos on youtube showing good ways to do a restoration. Take your time. Try at least to do each stage in the correct manner. Note never ever, ever blow your own trumpet on youtube. You will be shot down in flames. Some of the men and women watching would and could of made a masterpiece out of that lamp. Having said that. Don`t give up. keep at it. practice makes perfect. Oh and never make mistakes with electrics like earthing things. I was a Registered Ford technician for many years. I Remember watching so called mechanics do much worse restoration and servicing on cars. That Made what you have done look like Michelangelo's sistine chapel. Like I say practice. Thank you anyway for the video. Thank you for not hurling abuse back at our comments. 99% of people only want you to do well. Good luck with your next videos. Bad paintjob, no primer, no sanding. Glas not polished. Screws an washers look old. I would have paint the inside white. I don't like the result. I give it 2 out of 5 points. And why sandblasting and then grinding machine???

It appears you are new to the TH-cam restoration scene. People expect perfection, good acoustics, ASMR, quality fittings, innovation, and little surprises along the way.
I would give this a 5 (considering this Is my level competence) out of 10.
I suppose you can say there is room for improvement. I have subscribed to hopefully see someone get better in this genre over time.
Good luck - don’t be too disappointed by a lot of the harsh comments, this is a form of art/entertainment/relaxation for people and they have high demands. Also consider your completion out there, Tysy, hand tool, restore it, ...... the list goes on. Unless you have a real pretty face, you better make your work speak for itself.

Not wrong. There were paint runs, uneven finish due to no filler used, nor was paint wet sanded, washers should have been used in some spots (resulting in scratched paint during re-assembly), no consideration for finishing the fasteners (heat treat, polish, etc.)...I could probably find more issues if I bothered to watch more, but I had a feeling this was going to be bad, so I used my arrow keys to skip a lot. Glad I did. This guy even has a channel logo that seems to copy mymechanics, to a degree. This channel won't last, just a cheap facsimile of known good restorers.
He probably had not done one these before its 100% better than he got it and its not like its going to be shown in a museum in front of judges and it has to be 100 % correct and will never be out in the elements so step off the dudes nuts he is not rich like you for all this useless extra bullshit that nobody is going to notice anyway unless you left it out and then people will reply and point out what you did wrong

2. Цвет. Конечно, у каждого свой вкус, но хотя бы молотковой...
3. Изнутри, белым цветом, было бы шикарно. Для рассеивания.

First right tool for the taks, not to forget parts to clean and grease. Painting without primer useless. Paint should be high temperature resistant. This is no restoration however nearly acceptable cleaning.
The outer casing would make a cool helmet for a Halloween costume 🙃
This is the "Bull in a China Shop" approach to "Restoring".
Consider "Fixin' It Up" instead of "restoration".

This is not a restoration, it is just a recycled lamp now. For a collector it lost its value, so it is now a nice lamp, I wonder why you painted it red , it is so far of its original color. Btw why did you not fixed the broken socket

I can never figure out why people use chemical solvents and then sandblast. You do know what a media blaster is for, right? No primer before paint, reusing the original hardware and the broken edison shell. And for fuck's sake GROUND THAT THING. D-

Not a bad restore. It looked good at the end.
I personally like to leave a bit of a story in an item, leave a few scratches and dents so the item can tell it's story, so I would have skipped the grinding and painted directly after the sand blasting, but that is just my personal thing.
This old light really did come up nicely.

First pin you knocked out you mushroomed and had to grind off lol. Missed the spring washer off the swivel clamp. Bad paint job, some scraped off. Dear me...
The amazing outcome is, it was horrendous. From the very beginning of the video with that audio, first thing I did was turn it off. And the paint job, a child in primary school could do better.
I couldn't get though the whole video that metallic echoing sound every time he moved a part. Gave me a headache.

Nice video, but fix your audio. I think you have the camera on the table and every move you make with the light the sound transmits through the table making it loud and booming. Put the camera on a tripod or put a pad under it to isolate the camera from the table acoustically.
