EICR faults and tripping RCDs (08)

- Filmed during the heatwave of July 2019 this week is all about fault finding and testing. The EICR had a lot of damaged accessories and even a painted consumer unit. The RCD tripping in the nursery was down to a faulty washing machine and a couple of faulty sockets.

AS USUAL GUYS THIS VIDEO IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY AND NOT TO BE TAKEN AS ANY KIND OF TRAINING OR EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATION. AT ALL TIMES I AM IN FULL CONTROL OF THE INSTALLATION AND THERE IS NEVER ANY RISK TO PERSONS OR EQUIPMENT. ELECTRICITY SHOULD BE GIVEN THE FULL RESPECT IT DESERVES.
Hi , I did laugh at the dreaded rcd tripping just as your packing up, like you said I’ve had it happened so many times, nothing worse in the game than intermittent tripping 🙈🙈🙈.
But then the pure joy when you actually find the fault!
Great content cheers
Been watching your videos for about 12 months been a subscriber for the last 6 months, really like the fact that the environments you work in are similar to me i.e. very real!!! I
Thanks Steve. Yes as you can see it's not all glamour and brand new installs on my channel. I try to keep it real and show what happens from a spark who vlogs through the day. What's your background are you working in the domestic world?
@@JBE Yep working in Domestic (I was working in the Telecoms and IT but spent far too much time away from home and had moved off the tools and into management). I was an Electrical apprentice many moons ago in South East London and that was all in the commercial environment! Re took several of my C&G's last year to bring my qualifications back up to date! Meeting with the NICEIC in a couple of weeks so I can start to certify my own work! Luckily the company I am working with the chap there is a qualified supervisor, which has helped greatly! Really like your channel was a big fan of Bundy's channel too but since he got the his new unit, it seems to have lost a bit of the reality! Love being back on the tools!!!
Love the Mancunian humor (I live in the states now so have to spell accordingly no “ou”s in words). Safety is key you are saving lives with your work, keep doing that. Standards have to be maintained.
Great video. We’ve all had those rubber glove days!
I'm not sure what's worse; the state of that rental property or the pre-1984 plugtop that's passed goodness knows how many PAT tests! Still, win-win with the ice cream!
I didn't know who was older me or the plug? Ice cream is always a good call when it's a million degrees outside.
A special brew flavoured ice lolly would have been better.........if you know you know
I have known PAT testers who have done "visual PAT tests" on items which are inaccessible to them so make of that what you will...
@@stateofmind91 I carry out a visual PAT test every time I make a brew.
@@stateofmind91 I took off the back of a plug to rob the fuse and the two screws holding the flex in place - PAT man still passed it lol
Thank you for the time and effort you put in your videos.
That paper light fitting is from ikea. They state only to be used with led lamps.
I'm a maintenance manager with an electrical background. In my early maintenance days, I'd tell people why circuits were tripping out due to dodgy large appliances. Fridges in bars, ice machines etc. I'd unplug them and put a "DO NOT USE" label on the thing. Then I'd get an out of hours call about it on the same day only to find it'd been plugged in again by the next shift thus causing the same problem. My rules now: Will it pass the PAT? No? Chop the cable. Have I proven that it's faulty by recreating the fault and tripping the RCD? Chop the cable. Does that iron/hairdryer/whatever look like it's gonna cause problems or be a danger? Chop the cable and bin it. I know it's different on private sites but landlords tend to be understanding when you tell them that it's going to cost a few hundred quid to call me back out to unplug something.
Nice viewing, good work and fault finding. Yes place the sleeving on the armour conductors by all means so easy to do. Maybe the other end worth looking at too as often small things are a measure of how well an installation can be. I have a Veto bag too
Mr Beck...Underrated moment right here: 0:17 - Mortal Kombat fan over here :-)
Great video you deserve more subscribers!
Thank you and yes I'd obviously welcome more subscribers to the channel. For the moment though I'll just rely on the 2 or 3 I have to share it as far and as wide as possible.
My God, people are paying rent to live in a deathtrap like that ??!??!?!?!? Good video mate, first time watcher, won't be the last.
My experience is that a lot of "modifications" are carried out without the knowledge of the landlords.
Yes some tenants decide they want something different or they are capable of doing something and don’t ask permission from the landlord. Then call he’ll out of the landlord when anyone sees what they’ve tried to dodge themselves.
Love your humor, great vid lol...
Great vid mate 👍🏻👍🏻 Not the best way to get ya van clean though however that’s a whole different story 👍🏻
Take the machine! Properly made me laugh 😂😂😂
Yes the old wood screw face fixings nice
Nice job
What a grotty nursery.
Really Good video, like the way you keep it solely about electrics, some other electrician you tubers (not mentioning no names) seem to talk to much about irrelevant crap and it’s like a video log of their whole day and don’t keep it real and about electrics, sure they think they are on reality tv 🤔
I try to keep it based around the electrical industry and the wider world just outside it, which will include tools, tips, hacks, reviews and general techniques.
You are most likely referring to the electrician ( not naming no names ) with a "camera crew" thinking he is on a reality show? That one? 😉😂
Superb job sir .
They need to have a clean of that utility room while they're at it.
Haha yeah, it should be safe and spotless in there.
What was the IP rating of the batten light you replaced in the bathroom?
I'd say the heating element of the washing machine is at fault. Our dishwasher exhibited similar RCD tripping and it was the element that had a ground fault as the outer layer of the element had cracked.
Great video how much you charge for call out
Your too kind, tip even though they left the bird poo. Thanks for the video.
Hi mate love the videos.
What’s the paperwork storage thing for your van seats. And were do I get one from.thanks in advance 👍🏻
Whiteboxuk They're on TH-cam, Instagram and Twitter I think. I'll be doing a full review of it soon on here along with some other gear I use.
J Beck Electrical thankyou emailed them for info.
nice vid only 1 thing my isolation ocd is going off lol was worried you would touch the live parts on show at times sleeve no i would use some tape tho as iam not touching the circuit that way i,e disconnecting and re terminating
When an appliance fails the test in my neck of the woods, the cord is cut off by the tester. In that laundry situation I would have chopped off the plug.
Thanks
Put a bit of heat shrink around them as your there or at least some tape, but then again where do you stop?
I could of spent a couple of hours putting things half right here but as I said that's not what I'm there for. If I get the EICR job for the place I'll pull it to bits more then.
As a father it breaks my heart to think of children being in a house like that or anyone for that matter
Me too man. Some people simply shouldn't have children if all they're going to do is abuse and neglect them.
I would have cut the washing machine cable off near to the machine itself, so they cant reconnect it. Prob the heating elements IR is breaking down (if it only trips when its running), or the filter caps on the input (If its tripping all the time) having said that, i have found fridges and washers with crushed flexes that has broken down the IR. Filthy hole you went to considering it's a nursery Yuk! I wouldn't eat those ice pops either pmsl :-)
Armored cables when they are not sleeved up correctly and I'm there to do work elsewhere but I have the cover off I just stick some tape on them saves me disconnecting them that first house you were in looks like most of the houses i go in working for the council.
For situations like these, maybe take the fuse out and also use a plug lock out box and give the key to the responsible party, also put a nice big sign on the front of the washer saying "Do not use". Maybe a bit extreme but if your customer is stupid enough to bypass all of these measures and ignore them then...
What gets my goat is how much money these nurseries make and yet how much would it cost for a couple of new appliances (That probably get hammered daily)? The dryer for example is the wrong type, that hose should go outside through a vent. So how hard would it be for them to replace with a condensing type? Also who in gods name fitted the plug? No cord grip, bare wires everywhere and it looks like it was from the 70's!!!
*I* am from the 70s and take offence :P
To quote Bette Davis: "What a dump".
Hi, thanks for the video. I'm retired and working as an electricians's mate as a hobby. I'm studying C& G in my own time for the sake of it! When you do the initial IR test on the rings are you not supposed to remove loads before testing? Also the final repaired reading was about 3 mega ohms......would you be happy with that? Any advice would be appreciated.
GrumpyGrampa In all cases of insulation resistance testing of an in use existing installation, I'll always try to unplug all loads/appliances and anything plugged In. However, it's not always possible to do such things if there's no access. The test I carried out was between line and cpc of the faulty circuit at 250V. With this installation being probably over 30 years old and the IR reading being over 1M Ohm I was happy with the results. You'll see on the next day when I was called back, I managed to get the readings up to 23.5M Ohms after unplugging more old loads and various extension leads.
@@JBE Thanks for taking the time to reply......appreciated
If the appliance is faulty once you have told the customer and the situation where there is a few employees reccomend cutting the plug top off the appliance.
Is that Lightbowne Rd by any chance? Great videos by the way !
Guess again..
Are you working in Aleppo?
Thats the problem with appliances. Certain heating elements or pumps etc are only switched on at certain stages in the cycle. For example a freezer defrosts every few hours or a washing machine runs at different speeds and has a drain solenoid etc etc etc etc How do you work around that with intermittent RCD trips.
How did you know it was the washer did you do insulation resistance across the plug terminals and get a bad reading on
Live to earth
Yes, I didn't investigate too much but I believe it's an older washer that the company has had for years and just kept throwing parts at it. They have a new one in there now all running smoothly 😎👍
Little bit of tape if I was in a good mood 😁
It happened to me once and the bastard I worked for put the neutrals in the wrong neutral bar
Should have taken/cut the plug off the washing machine. You should have swapped the W/M plug for the drier plug instead of using your extension one.

why would you wear gloves, can never figure it out (Steve Lav)
😂 how frustrating, good video though 👍
Very and thank you. The heat didn't help at all 😰
I would have sleeved the swa with the correct colours and cut the plug off that washer.
Then they can’t use it.
...or like the one I've just been called out to. Water ingress!
Perfectly honest. I wouldnt add sleeving.
Plug looks like it was put on with a butter knife!
I cut the plug off as close as I can to the faulty item
I would of cut the plug off
Why don’t people clean ffs??!
IME, plugging two current-heavy appliances into one socket is asking for trouble.
Ffs dude, run away or work in a hazmat suit all day. A fire is the best thing that can happen to that pad. Fucking pepper pig is a hair dryer so just tell them it won’t work with the power off😂
Sometimes, you just have to get on with the job and pretend not to see things 👀🙈🙉🙊
EICR , is a C0 throughout 😏🙈🤣, leaving the house you should’ve sang the Jaws movie classic ,
Fair well adieu, you fair Spanish ladies 😱😱🙈🙈🤣🤣, TH-cam it 😜👍
Plugging in faulty washer, can't fix stupid
Raiden 😂😂😂
