After 8 years in the U.S. Air Force I decided to get out, and here are the reasons why. Check out my upcoming video on all the reasons why I JOINED the Air Force to get both sides of the story :)
Dude, I did 8 years--started out as jet engine mechanic, and finished as an Instructor Flight Engineer. Made the hard choice, and have had success. I have an MBA, and am now a Doctor. Floor it when you find yourself in uncertainty. "The only way out is through."
@@livinfreewithak If you need any advice, I'm more than happy to chat. I'm also a cofounder of a company that helps Veterans transition. Don't worry, it's not a plug for the organization, just lending a helping hand to another Vet.
I did 20 years and retired, it was a different time and different Air Force. It's not the end of the journey just the start of a new one. Have a plan and push on. Good luck!
You hit the nail on the head. I’ve been stationed in Alaska for almost four years and I AM DONE. I am tired. I got my masters and second bachelors degree while enlisted and I am so thankful. The things I have seen and heard have left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I’m grateful for the bonds I’ve made but I have never been more ready to break free from some of these leaders who supposedly care. On a side note retired SMA Dailey came and spoke and said no beards because the American people like and expect the clean cut military appearance. He said now if it’s religious or shaving profile that’s fine. That rubbed me the wrong way. It’s always about the image and show .
Yeah shift work is tough...no exaggeration..as a Navy Nuclear Operator on the USS Carl Vinson we never slept the same schedule two nights in a row!! Our "watch" rotation was 5 on 10 off so you spent 1/3 time or 8 hrs average per day operating the nuclear plant constantly rotating shift!!. Then you had your "rate" I was an electrician so then I did preventive maintenance on switchgear, motors, generators, etc. then you had corrective maintenance cuz stuff broke. Then you had your quals for your next higher "watch", then we always ran drills to keep us well trained for nuclear casualties, then you had to clean, paint, and maintain material condition of the plant. Man do that on a 8 month Westpac...I did three in my six year career. 80 hours a week was a short week. 14-16 hours days were common. tough career choice! Ex Navy nukes in general do very well when they get out.
@@livinfreewithak Absolutely they did. They say Naval Nuclear Power School is the most intense mentally of any military rating. It was a good start to being able to handle Engineering at a Major University. I have a Master's degree and just retired from a 32 year career as both a Nuclear and Electrical Engineer. Compared to the Navy I made insane $$$. The navy tried to scare me when I got out with a wife and newborn...how was I to survive? Trust me most companies have better benefits than the military did, but the military never says that... I served I'm glad..but I totally agree I saw the military screw with good people unnecessarily. When in you are like government property, ok for some not for me. I'm sure you'll be fine!!!! ps my dad did 22 years in Strategic Air Command. Did 3 stints in South East Asia operating remote jungle radar stations. retired as a Master Sergeant in 1978.
Goid to hear. I had 4 years in big Army myself with a stay in Afghanistan. I hope you have a decent plan layed out. The economy and real estate market is going to crap right now but there are good opportunities out there if you know where to look.
Air Force Veteran here (1977-1981.). I'm with you about the jab. I, myself voluntarily took the COVID vaccine because I have some health conditions. But it was my choice to take the vaccine; no one made me do it. I think the military vaccine mandate was flat wrong. It's one thing for someone like me to choose to be a guinea pig; it's quite another for the government to force to be guinea pigs against their will. Thank you for your service and good luck to you!
I subscribed and liked just because of your mention of the jab. I lost my dream job as a Catholic High School History Teacher because of that and the mask mandates. I also left the military in 2012 for many of the same reasons as you now. Good luck to those on trying to get anything reinstated. I've found being able to get anything from the military or VA to be damned near impossible. It has made me bitter and skeptical of anything with the government.
I'm glad you liked the video and happy to have you here as a subscriber! Thanks for the comment! I'm so sorry that you lost your dream job. Too many Americans lost their livelihood and had life upside down, while gov continued to change their tune on masks, jab, distancing, etc. None of it was done correctly! I'll be doing more videos on how to navigate VA things like GI Bill and disability benefits, etc. Hope you enjoy!
@@livinfreewithak 12 years in. 10 years as a suicide prevention trainer. At this point the battle is between advocating for myself versus acceptance. As you know, the military is a machine, and going against it is extremely difficult and time consuming. Time away from family, time away from your current role. You seem happy to be out. I hope to share those feelings in the near future! Keep up the positive work!🙏🏽
I knew a guy who refused to take his Anthrax shot when he was slotted to go to Korea, got booted, I took mine. Army strong. Not scared of the COVID vaccine either, *having seen the hard science before taking it.* 98% percentile right here bud. In hindsight, we overreacted, but that wouldn't have been the hill I died on... Now imagine not finding out about "Stop Loss" and then shipping out a month before your ETS date. Army strong, I still deployed & served Honorably anyway. It wasn't a joy BTW, to say the least... I don't know man, sounds to me like it was more about you and not serving your country. Shift work? You had it easy bud. We'd train for weeks, 24/7, come back, then do it again. My last year was essentially a 24/7 operation. Yeah, raising a family doing that isn't the best idea. I always knew I wasn't going to make it a career. My brother and Grandfather were Air Force, the lack of PT shows, lol. It's ironic that you use the word "believe' when talking about chiropractic and acupuncture....get an inversion table and make sure you apply for VA Disability. Save yourself some money on pseudo scientific approaches. That's my advice.
The part where you're talking about taking the jab and not wanting to take it. And losing all your benefits your job and so on because of it. That wasn't just people in the military, that was people in all kinds of lines of work. People in the medical field with a very long long history of working in the medical field lost their job because of it. People in the police force could lose her job for not taking it hell some people who just worked at a factory could lose her job for not taking it. So although I fully agree with everything you said about it. It was not something that was only affecting military people.
You’re 100% correct! It was horribly pushed on so many industries. Doctors had their licenses threatened over it and California began threats of CPS cases against parents who didn’t give it to their kids. It definitely affected all people.
I think its a big difference being single and in the military vs having a fam. Shift work didn't bother me when I was a squid, but I was single. I could see it was hard on guys with families, especially small kids. Typical military story here, I was in a unit that deployed from japan out to ships when they went on their long 6 month cruises, or if special circumstances happened. I had just come off a deployment and was supposed to be at the bottom of the list. Christmas was nearing and some bs popped off involving NK and some ships were sent to park off their waters and look tough. I got deployed to that because the command made the decision that married guys shouldn't be deployed so close to Christmas. Was gone for 6 weeks, had leave cancelled, a sweet car purchase I was about to close fell through and it caused irreparable problems with my brand new gf. That was the trigger that made me decide hayl nah to re-enlisting. You mess with my hot chick fun time and ahm out lol.
Don’t ever mess with the car or the lady lol. But in all truth, I think they did you wrong. It’s definitely a challenge juggling manning issues and getting the mission done. That’s why I’ve long been an advocate of improving quality of life and not just going through the motions with mandatory fun as if that actually improves morale. You’re 100% right about single vs kids, that’s the huge factor. I would add, though, that many ppl get out because of things like what you mentioned and that’s a problem. We’ve gotta figure out how to make QoL better or we’ll never stop the “low manning”. Thanks for staring down Kimmy Jong for us lol
@@livinfreewithak Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor and Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II are the best though. But I know airplanes are super loud. Have you seen the show Master of the Air?
