or any closed product hahahaha, the only reason that i found viable is to play drafts or pre releases (with t2 spikes seems really nice to catch one event ), but thats it. Buying booster packs or other products, its not good. Much viable is to buy singles! with 1k dol you get many tier decks (including legacy ones).
I think that was the intent, if no youtuber bought and showed off the product everyone might be in the dark.
Imagine how much fun M30th would be if you could actually draft them with friends at a table top, or at a local game store, at $5-10 dollars a pack. That would have been a real way to honor MTG's 30th anniversary, such a shame greed ruined that.
Yea, and the best part about that is it would have tanked dual land prices. That would feel even better! 😏
damn, this hadn't crossed my mind, but this is so true. Somewhere in a parallel universe where the ethos of the world is not capitalism, they are celebrating Magic's anniversary by all the millions of players worldwide getting to experience what the first ever games of Magic were like, what those first few players saw. I'm sure that would have made Garfield happy too. P.S holy shit power creep is real xD
that was what i actually thought when they said - we want to give you all the chance of opening a black lotus..... this would have been THE draft set. Accessible, fun by itself and also giving good proxies to everyone who wants to play a little bit of legacy or vintage or even cedh - I would have gladly paid wizards for my proxies instead of a random manufacturer or my printer ink producer.... Now its just a mess

It's hard to believe WotC had the hubris to create and sell this product. I can be a whale at times and had this been $1000 for a complete set of these cards I might have gone for it. To sell it in 4 randomized booster packs like this with no guarantee of power or at least duals is a total slap in the face. Thanks for the video Kenji, at the very least you've confirmed all my worst assumptions of what this product is🙃

They're packs. Complete with (as far as we know) the original rarity weightings. If what I've heard is true, there were only a few hundred Black lotuses printed in the original alpha. I can totally imagine Wizards printing the same number (or even fewer) lotuses or pieces of power just to stoke artificial scarcity even more.
1. This should have been a full set of cards.
2. Even as a set it shouldn't have been priced any higher than the previous commemorative sets in the past.
3. If they wanted to do something SPECIAL for the 30th, why not track down as many of the original pieces of art as possible and do full high resolution scans with modern tech. Give us higher quality versions of the original artwork. Most of them were paintings, and I bet a lot are still in the possession of either wizards, the original artists, or in some private collections. Heck, a short article or documentary of their efforts to track down the paintings and request permission to do high-res scans would have been great for PR. Give the public at least a HINT that they're still willing to reach out and communicate with their fan base to make something for them.

I would have paid $1000 for a complete set of Beta in this 30th Anniversary style. If nothing else, could have left it sealed and seen if it moved in value come 5-10 years. But $1000 for four random packs!? Da fuq outta here with that.

Opened my first "Starter Box" in the fall of 1993. Rares included an alpha Mox Pearl and an alpha Nightmare. In those days, you had decks with both alpha and beta cards, and nobody used sleaves. Ended up with multiples of all power nine and full sets of duals, etc. Sold all of it by 1998. Hard to believe we were sitting around the table at 14 years old, playing with what would someday be hundreds of thousands of dollars of cards. Thanks for keeping MTG fun Numot, even if Wizards has a wonky approach!

They're not legal in sanctioned play, so yes, WotC selling randomized proxies only allowed for kitchen table games for 1k. At least they have a blue core.

It was $1000 for 4 packs of proxies. If you didn't think it was a waste and not worth it you were hoping to have it as an investment. I understand what he wanted to do but not buying it is much more of a powerful statement.

I've been playing since I was 10 years old in 95, but could never afford the original cards. This product I thought was going to be a cool way to experience opening the original cards if even by proxy form. What a slap in the face...
Was nice nostalgia remembering the feel of opening up beta/unlimited packs......but not for $1K proxy cards.

I gotta say this was the BEST 30th video I've seen. Not over the top, not anti Wizards/Hasbro. Definitely NOT worth $250 a pack. As someone who has played MTG since 1993, there was so much potential in this product. Had it been $9.99 a pack/99.99 collector booster, this woulda been one of the best fun draftable proxy product out there. Hasbro dropped the ball big time. If Hasbro is smart, they should rerelease these next year with WHITE borders in a white wrapper for 9.99 a pack and 99.99 collector booster. That would save face alot! Thanks for the awesome non biased view!!

@@bombarded15 They aren't tournament legal, but if you use sleeves and make sure whoever you're playing with is cool with proxies, you absolutely can play with them. It's a shit product, but they're not worth nothing and they're not non-playable.

For $1000, as packaging, I'd expect a leather box that you could use as a deck box for years to come.
Keep in mind people, you can buy several revised dual lands instead of gambling on proxies.

Everyone in the comments is being extremely nice to you. I'm a fan of yours too Kenji, but all I feel is a hollow emptiness inside. A disappointment that you gave Wizards $1000 dollars and helped contribute to the perpetuation of this terrible Wizard's product. This disappointment consumes me. Gnawing at me within like an entropic beast, withering away my feeling until I am naught but a husk of a creature only capable of playing mono-green decks and flunging with zero tactical insight. Soon, my mythic rank will crumble and I will be back down in bronze, cluelessly tapping lands for more mana than I need and allowing it to fade between stages to mana burn. Cramming cards into decks with 5 colour piles of "good stuff" and being unable to cast any of it before my opponent's turn one, turn two, and turn three plays all grind me down while I rope out my time drooling at the pretty pictures on the screen. When the last figments of my ego and mental cohesion have eroded, I will open my mouth and sing a song that ends the world, all because of your decision.
The retro land art was pretty cool though, that's always a nice get.
Oh man, I remember the amazing feeling of opening these packs when I first started playing as a kid. The cards had this distinct smell to them and made me so happy. I would do have those happy feelings back about anything.
I really don't like that you bought it. Sure, you say that it's a bad product but now you are one of the people making it so we will get more of this type of stuff.
Maybe this product is the full retro experience and the boosters are searched by WotC employees before boxing them?

When I opened those rares in 1993 it only cost me $3 a pack. Plus I was excited to have more cards.
I thought they were $1.99 a pack in 93. I remember Antiquities and Dark being $1.49 a pack. I miss the early days of MTG!
@@ObsessedCollector We were able to get the first batch of the Dark for $2 or $2.50 Fallen Empires were less then $1. Regular packs were about $3 for us
If anything, this reminds me how pure and cohesive mtg was originally. Nowadays, it’s too convoluted and the art is overdone

I had been desensitized by all the nonsense surrounding this product and WotC and Hasbro, but seeing Nummy open a pack, lay out all the cards, and ask whether it was worth $250 really drove home how shit this product is, even if it hadn’t been designed to celebrate the 30th anniversary of MTG. That it was just makes it so much worse. This is absolutely miserable
At a $1000 price tag there should be a guaranteed top 20 money card.

We have been seeing that for the last month and a half now. He didn’t need to do it. He’s part of the problem for supporting this shit.
Year later looking at about $450-$500 in value tops. Packs unopened still holding same value around $250. Retro cards going for good money pulling their weight here along withthe gauntlet. I always enjoy these regardless of what's opened.

This would’ve been a fantastic product if only the pricing were reasonable. Also all the cards should’ve been retro frame.
I think a lot of people don't realize how much this hurt the game. I started playing MTG from scratch at Dominaria United and was totally all in the game. Since this release along with the fact WoTC basically said they have no regrets and plan to just keep with the same formula I've already lost interest in the game. I know a few others who feel the same. If this was actually a good product for the players and not the 1% I would have been all in. It's sad because your draft videos, the Professor videos, CGB videos were all what got me into the game but WoTC is not a company I'd support. I don't blame you for buying it, I would find it incredibly hard to NOT buy this if MTG was a huge part of life.

I've never understood the idea of the reserve list....they've already limited most of the cards in Alpha Beta and Unlimited to a single format that not many ppls even play. To me it looks like theres legit no harm in reprinting older cards other than the price of them droping due to saturation

Hi and I'd like to say that I TOTALLY FEEL YOUR PAIN. I spent $1k as well, expecting a true trove of treasure.... was I duped!!!! I read stats later of odds of getting a lotus or a power 9, it was something like 1%!!!!!! I swear the sad thing is I think you got better cards than I did! I wanna set them on fire and mail them to the company lol can't believe I fell for it. At least perhaps we can recoup some loss and sell the empty box for a few hunnys???
