I 100% agree. 03 TMNT is my favorite version.
I liked that the 2012 version their eyes changed when they were serious. I am having trouble finishing the 2003 version because the final season switches to doing that as well as switches the art style

My head canon's always been that Splinter fashioned their masks from discarded t-shirts.
Yeah! I have a headcanon whers they started with the Uniform red Colouring but to tell themselves apart they made their coloured ones to tell each other apart.
Or, how about this one, they're each color variants of domesticated red eared sliders?

It gives them more personality 🙂 Mikey has the short bandana, Raph's bandana is ripped because of his pet bites and Donnie's bandana is slightly longer than Leo's one. I love the differences between them in this version. 👌Slight and perfect.
I found this while searching the reason why Mikey has shorter tails on his mask. It seems to me that I once saw an actual reason for this explained in one of the animated series (2012 Nickelodeon, I think). I thought he either got his mask tails shot off by the Krang, or cut off by Leonardo in a training near miss. But after a ton of searches, I can't find it anywhere. I was looking at this video and reading the comments to see if anyone else remembers that.

@@himremie5749 Over the years, the Turtles wore different styles of their bandanas, especially for their eyes as well.
Maybe I am old school, But I remain a fan of the Mirage comics headbands. I grew up on a steady diet of the original comics. Are you going to cover the Mighty Mutanimals? Think it is a trip that technically, they were the first superhero group to feature the death of all the members.
I will definitely get to it eventually. Stay tuned!
@@THEOLDTURTLEDEN While I do understand why having different colors help tell which one is which, having it all the same color lets them fool their enemies into thinking they duplicated, called Ninpō Bunshin no Jutsu, a technique used to prevent their enemies from knowing who they’re fighting.
The early incarnations by Mirage, Fred Wolf, Golden Harvest and 4Kids had the potential to do so, if they wanted to (but they chose not to), but it would be cool if they did, because when they share the same physique but different color, they can fool their enemies using different color paint for more effort. It is also why I’m not a fan of IDW, and, to an extent, Viacom, giving them different physical appearances, because it discards the potential of using this duplication method to fool their enemies. Ninjas are suppose to hide their identity, because if they look physically different, they’re identified immediately.
Definitely a fan of the classic look with the long ties. Gotta admit though, loving Raph’s new look in Rise, including the headband! 😜
The first movie pretty much got all the aspects downright PERFECT.

Thanks! I really enjoyed this focus on the turtles' costume design. I very much enjoy seeing all the different interpretations of the characters over the years. That's one of the aspects of TMNT that I love most: seeing how it evolves over time. Hopefully most people will greet the next live action iteration warmly. Best.

I like the 03 Turtles headbands the most, so I'd clearly go with the classic long-tailed headbands. The headbands covering the top of their heads are okay, too, I think, if they're kids, like the 03 toddlers. Those are just adorable 😍😍😇😍😍
As far as the movie for the headbands, gotta go with the classic long bandanna, possibly change it for mikey like in 2012.

Two things that always bugged me about the Turtles (being ninjas) are (1) why would they need masks at all and (2) why would they wear different colours..? While I admit it was often difficult to tell them apart in the old black-and-white comics when they weren't visibly holding weapons or addressing each other by name, a key to ninjitsu is being unable to identify individuals. Also, as ninjas (and non-humans), they should be wearing cloaks or disguises or something to cover up their mutant appearance when above ground. They did this more often in some of their early issues (They also very often took their masks off during downtime in the original comics, which makes sense too). But, of course it's all about looking cool as opposed to realism or practicality.
The long bands like in the early '00s cartoon and even the original film are too long...I know it looks pretty cool and is fun to draw like Batman's cape flowing in the wind but just seems impractical..should be somewhere between the short cartoon ones and the long stylisitc ones. One thing (prbably the only thing) I liked about the Michael-Bay Turtles is the fact that their masks looked homemade; like they were literally cut up T-shirts they found in the garbage somewhere...helps with the realism (although don't get me started on Donatello's nerd glasses or Leo's choice to wear samurai armour on top of his naturally-armoured shell)
The Answer To the 1st Part of your Comment is in the Turtle's Names. And it's also been Answered by you yourself. Part of the Reason why I dig the Bayverse Turtles
One thing I've been wondering lately is what the in-universe point of the masks/bandanas is. They're presumably not hiding their identities, since they don't usually socialize with anyone who doesn't already know they're vigilantes. Plus, they're giant, anthropomorphic turtles, and in most versions, there are only four of them in existence, so it's not like they wouldn't be immediately recognizable in a crowd anyway. Maybe Splinter had a hard time telling them apart while they were growing up, so he just got them into the habit of wearing the color-coded bandanas to make it easier. Of course, that doesn't work with any version where they all wear the same color, but it's something, at least.
It most likely is a way Splinter found of having them express their individuality and sense of self, while also having them permanently adhere to the ninja motif, to give them existential purpose.
Because they're giant anthropomorphic turtles, as you point out, they never had much of a chance to express their social image, and to measure their own value in society, as they wouldn't fit in.
So this is a relatively simple way of having them permanently show off something that displays taste, individuality, identity (as ninjas) and choice.
Splinter having them become "ninjas" in the behavioral and aesthetical sense has as much to do with the cool factor for us fans, as it has to do with teaching the Turtles about self-preservation and giving them some existential stability.
If they weren't ninjas, what would they be?

I like all the headbands the Turtles have had but I can't choose between The 2003 Headbands and The Mirage ones. I'm not huge the uniform red colouring but The different colours are iconic which I prefer.

I love 03 versions and 2012 versions headbands. 2012 headbands seem to fit more with the turtles personality. Like how Mikey is short cuz he the youngest of the group and raph look rough cuz he is the rough one.
My favorite is of course, the first live action movie's headbands (along with everything else from that movie).
The first movie actually made them look like reptile/human hybrids, they were very realistic and most importantly 3D.
I like the classic long tailed headbands myself better than any other headband they've had and I think in the " Ninja Turtles: Next Mutation series, they should have had Venus' headband maybe pink or yellow or something like that maybe you know senses she's a girl but for her senses she's a girl I do kinda like the whole braided headband thing!

I like the normal headbands with the long ties, but for Raph i am ok with the pirate style, because it suits him in my opinion.

One idea I have for my headcanon is Splinter as Yoshi found the turtles. Because he wanted to be an artist, he has paint and uses some to tell the turtles apart by painting the back of their shells. As the Turtles aged and mutated, the paint faded

Mine's is the bandana on the 2018 Donnie.
Only good thing from Next Mutation along with Venus, is the bandanas. They're different and they personalize the Turtles that you can tell who is who. For that reason, I also love Rise of the TMNT. That series also gives different body types to them. Even if as a series 2003 Turtles is the best, you can't differate them if you saw only the silhouettes of them.
I like the full head bandana on Raph, it feels like it suits him
I would say while 2003 Headband Style,the 2012 is the Best Version as the Colors are mor Vibrant while Personally and the Leght from Long and Short tells from Oldest to Youngest.
In the 2012 series each headband reflected the turtles personalities. Raph‘s headband is longer and more unkept and shredded. Leo and Donnie’s head bands are also long but are more well kept and clean. Mikey’s headband is the shortest.
The best show and best turtles ever were from 2003.
The shorter tie-offs always looked the neatest to me.

The original Comics in the beginning with the Red Bandanas had the short bows.
I like the colored ones and I prefer the 2012 versions including Mikey's short bow and I love the original 90s first film best. And the Black colored version from Dark Leo and also the end of the 2012 series for all of them were pure gold.

Classic masks with the long tails for me too, all the way. Also, I always thought it was interesting with that original Ninja Turtles manhole movie poster the way they looked more like plush toys than how they ended up looking in the final film. lol

I liked the long all red look. Old fan of the cartoon from the 80's. I think its because they all studied the Foot clan skills and all the weapons they utilize they've practiced with, just picking their particular favorite.

the reason behind "Pirate" or full head bands is they wanted to make the boys look as much like Wrestlers as they could. Nacho Libre/spandex, Hulk Hogan, Bret "Hitman" Hart...
I think the colours were also inspired by that. But they scratched it The reason 03 KID Turtles had them is to pay tribute to that idea
Long strands show self-control, i think, and they look awesome when they droop down. Hands down, i agree 1990 movie had the best versions. Dirty and ripped makes sense

I think it's best for them all to have the normal yet long headbands, no different pirate bands for some and such, i just want them to be consistent, atlho, maybe Mike could have the short band like 2012.
The long-tailed clasic mask, but aged and tattered, thats one of the few things I like of the "Michael bay turtles".
