A widowed farmer, with a brave but brutal military past, decides not to join up when the British arrive in 1776. However, when his son enlists and is later captured by the enemy, the former soldier must abandon his new-found pacifist principles in order to rescue his oldest child, and forms a regiment of Carolina patriots, whose guerrilla tactics prove pivotal to the US war effort.

Yeah they used a pincer movement, also known as a double envelopment. They lured the British into the killing fields at point blank range via tricking them into thinking they were retreating. By chasing after them, the Americans outflanked them and surrounded the British. Guilford Courthouse was more of a draw, but it proved that the British were not going to be able to keep advancing. Cornwallis retreated to Yorktown, where he hoped to be reinforced by sea and have an army sent to him from New York by Henry Clinton, who stubbornly refused to march from there to give aid. Once the French arrived and successfully cleared Chesapeake Bay of the British Navy, Cornwallis couldn’t escape by sea, and the reinforcements of Washington’s army from the north completely overwhelmed the remaining British Army forces besieged at Yorktown. They held out for a month before realizing the fight was lost. That’s when they surrendered.

Similar thing happened at the Battle Of Hastings centuries prior. English shield wall held tight and the Normans couldn't break it and when they fell back the Saxons tried charging after them. The feigned flight worked twice apparently and Harold lost both of his brothers who were told not to pursue the Normans.
It helped weaken the English forces and of course King Harold fell which ended the battle and changed world history.

The Japanese developed better strategy to offset the long reload of muzzleloaders. Each row would take turns firing while the other reloads to ensure a constant stream of shots. It was best demonstrated at the battle of Nagashino, which happened around 200 years before the revolution war.

    • @Tmb1112

@@OldToothbrush0210 yeah... that's not really a Japanese strategy. A ton of places came up with the same idea. Line infantry. It was used back with bowmen as well, long before guns were a thing. Like even Lord of the Rings they do it in the battle of Helm's Deep, where Aragorn has different lines fire at different times to make a constant firing of arrows. But with the weapons being so inaccurate, and militia being mostly untrained, and there not being that many men in the stretched-out line for them to have several rows of soldiers, line infantry strategy wouldn't have worked well for the militia here.

The reload time of the guns you're mentioning are completely different to this period, which in 200 years came a long way, and in the late 16th and early 17th century that is exactly the tactics used in Europe... ridiculous to use them at this point though.

Not entirely fiction. Benjamin Martin is based on a guy named Francis Marion (the swamp fox or the ghost in this movie) that lead successful guerilla movements throughout the south. Culminating in the battle of Cowpens, which the strategy in the final battle of the movie was based on. Tavington is based on a British officer named Bannister Tarleton, famously brutal dragoon known for killing soldiers after they surrendered. He returnes to England and served in parliament where he argued for the continuation of the slave trade into the nineteenth century.
A lot of the movie is silly, but I maintain it is not as inaccurate as people make it out to be. Most of the innacuracy is to do with race and slaves in the movie.

You should know that the validy of Taleton's reputation is still a matter of discussion. For example that case of his men butchering Colonial prisoners supposedly happened due to some of the Colonials faking surrender.

    • @colonelturmeric558

The movie misses out pretty much everything, hence why so many americans believe that it was a huge feat. In reality, there were so many factors to consider for the brits. Was more of a french, dutch and spanish achievement, and most brits had no stomach for the war at the time because the contemporary view was that american colonists were still british. The brits were also outnumbered, and funnily enough the americans weren’t guerilla masters. Washington wanted a european army, the british were more adept at irregular warfare. They had to be, because they had less men after the first year or so of the conflict. There’s a hell of a lot wrong with this film, the same as many “historical” films.

I know I'm a bit late to this... but yeah, when it comes to films like this, in order to truly get them right, you need the reenactors that know this stuff like the back of their hand. The Patriot is not a bad period piece by any stretch, but if you wanna reduce your costs, and use reenactors, you better be doing a true Historical Drama on the scale of Gettysburg, or you'll have a hard time convincing them.
The reason being is actually quite simple: If you make a film based on an actual conflict, and throw in events that didn't happen, the reenactors will ignore the casting call, because they know what's at stake when these films are made (how many people to this day believed the British burned a church full of civilians because of this film?). The men and women that do living history do it to make sure history isn't forgotten. And the best way to do it, is to show it. As it happened. With minimal breaks in disbelief.

Fun fact: The black soldiers among the british in fact are historically accurate. British recruited them with the promise of freedom, as they were often runaway slaves. And unlike the colonials, they kept that promise after the war.

    • @mr.s2005
      @mr.s2005 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hoe could the Americans lie about that when i never heard of them making a similar promise, and George washington opposed having black soldiers, though that didnt stop them. There was a division of free black soldiers in the continental army. George Washington was convicted by Hamilton to use them in the final assault on the Yorktown defenses...also, for the british supposed being so open minded about black soldiers on their side. They proved they weren't so thrilled about them when they murdered and cut to pieces a white officer for leading that particular continental divison.

Much is said about the historical inaccuracies of this movie in terms of “unbelievable” events. The funny part of Cowpens is that the real thing was even more dramatic than this scene. In reality, the militia feigned retreat all the way behind the Continental regulars and circled around to attack the British left. The regulars themselves feigned retreat for a short distance, only to turn around and fire into the British bayonet charge at point blank range. Meanwhile, Continental cavalry had been hiding behind the hill and came charging to the British right. It’s the only example of double-envelopment in the Revolutionary War.

"I have five great grandfathers" That's fairly impressive given you only 4 great grandfathers... There are some issues with the revolution for me but in particular the straw that broke the camels back was that the British banned any furhter movment to the West, Had they won there is at least a chance that the Genocide visited on the nartive Americans might not have happened. Similarly the taxation without representation argument is more nuanced then most Americans think it is given all the tax being raised in the Colonies was expressly intended to be spent within the Colonies not to enrich the British who where paying taxes and 1/6 of the defence budget was going on the protection of the 13 Colonies in 1771

    • @rustyrussell2537

I think they said this based on the Battle of the Cow pens.
During the battle there were three lines a small force of militia at the front, the second was a larger group of militia in a tree line, and at the third line was Contental Regulars, cavalry, and short artillery.
The first line fired twice then retreated to the second line. Now a militia force three times the size of first line shot twice again, inflicting heavy causalities to the British, then the militia fell back to third line and well you can probably guess what happened to the British that time.
The Cow Pens has been called the most perfect American victory.

Yes they promised many slaves freedom. It was sorta difficult because much of the south (where majority of slaves where) was loyalists to the British.

@@orotewilderness2913 And unlike the new USA actually kept that promise, many loyalists where generally given land in Canada, many US Black patriots where returned to slavery.

I can't imagine firing and just standing there for 30 seconds trying to reload. All the while the enemy has a clear shot a mere 50ft away..
