    Okay here’s the quick version: no it doesn’t hurt the motor, it’s normal when upgrading exhaust, the popping is from the unburnt fuel igniting in the hot exhaust. However there are some instances where the popping is a result of a bad tune or vacuum leak etc etc

      well..yes...thats the closest to the correct explanation ive read so far. yes, its unburnt fuel in the exhaust but, the reason is not because of too much fuel..its the opposite..the fuel air ratio is too lean, which results in high exhaust temps then as we deceleration and cut off air, the fuel mixture then becomes incomplete burned as it enters the hot exhaust pipe. thats why we need to richen the fuel air mixture ratio becomes less combustible as it cools the exhaust pipe temps aswell. another thing that causes popping are leaking exhaust donuts

      Actually the answer was in there, but it wasn't directly stated. If you having decel popping between 2 rpms (probably a bad EFI map or if you're running carbs you have a jet that is too big) then you are probably running too rich since the pop occurs when un-burnt fuel mixes with fresh (O2 rich) air in your exhaust and the temp is high enough to ignite it. Try decreasing your main and pilot jets (one at a time then checking it by riding and doing several decels).

    He explains why it happens, and where it happens, but never started a yes or no its not bad. Just because it happens in the exhaust doesn't mean that the fuel igniting in the exhaust won't cause some kind of reverse exhaust pressure that may hurt the valves or something. So what's the full answer Doc??

    • @PotatoeJoe69
      @PotatoeJoe69 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No it's not bad for the engine. It's unburnt fuel making it into the exhaust then igniting. Occasionally, a really piss poor tune can cause decel popping; but if that's causes by the tune, you're bike is probably gonna be running like shit all around, so it won't be a mystery.

    I have a 96 dyna with a stage 1 (CV carb). Had bad decel popping for quite a while and tried just about everything to get rid of it. Previous owner did the stage 1 and wasn't to sure if he did it right. A stock main jet is a 42. Already had a 45. Just for sh*ts and giggles I installed a 48 main jet. Wouldn't you know it, decel pop went away. Other things to look for is leaking intake gaskets and exhaust flange gaskets. For my bike it was starving for fuel.

    If you clutch in then there cannot be any decel pop as the engine is no longer being uses to decel the bike, so clutching in (as stated) and listening for the range at which the engine is popping is not correct, just decel and tell your tuner the gear and rev range you observe. I like most of your videos Doc as your usually spot on the money with diagnosis and explanation ,but this one not so much with this one, most of the comments are confused viewers maybe some clarification or a remake. Keep up the great videos

  • @PotatoeJoe69
    @PotatoeJoe69 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Fun fact; wrapping your exhaust with fiberglass wrap or titanium wrap can basically eliminate decel pop. The extra heat in the pipes makes any unburnt fuel vaporize, and the extra heat also causes better scavenging which prevents backflow of fresh air into the exhaust -- when then let's the heat properly evaporate any fuel without popping.
    But of course this has its limitations. If you're running 12" long shotgun pipes, you're gonna have decel pop no matter what you do.

    Since Doc didn't answer the question I'll take a go at it. Because the decel poping is taking place in the exhaust toward the end or tip end of the exhaust pipe, my answer would be that it depends on how short the exhaust pipes are. As with any motor as long as the combustion of unburned fuel is taking place outside of the exhaust manifold then the only damage that can occur would be to the exhaust pipe it's self, and even then I don't think that the detonation of unburnt fuel in the engine itself on the exhaust side will cause any harm. An example of this would be the 4 cylinder engine that Ford put in the Ford ranger it actually had eight spark plugs for four cylinders, four on the intake side and four on the exhaust side, so you could see with that engine you were having a second detonation of unburnt fuel inside the engine and Ford did this to improve admissions and also give better fuel mileage. This was the engine that was also used in the small Mitsubishi trucks that sold back in the '80s and we all know how dependable those little ranger and Mitsubishi trucks were.

Doc I really enjoy your commentary instructions and insight about Harleys, I was just watching your episode on decel popping, as someone who worked in high performance engine shops when I was younger and we had a Dino. I learned it's always better to put the bike in neutral and use the brakes instead of using the engine and transmission to slow it down whenever possible and the dyno operator said when you decel with the engine it makes it harder on the ring lands of the Pistons and I believe it

    For all you people who don't understand anything, he did answer the question. Decel pop is unburnt fuel in the exhaust igniting. Since the unburnt fuel went through the exhaust ports into the exhaust there is no harm done to the engine. It is actually a slight rich condition,which is way better than being lean. It's not rich enough to wash out the cylinders though. Now with fuel injected vehicles, fuel does not cut completely off when you close the throttle. The ecm let's a little bit of fuel to go through so engine breaking isn't so hard and to control the heat some. With some aftermarket tuners you can turn off fuel when you close the throttle.
    The is also another reason you can get Decel pop and that is from an exhaust leak. A excessive exhaust leak can burn up the exhaust valves because the exhaust is not evacuating far enough from the ports.
    I do take back my first statement and I'm too lazy to go back up to correct it. So the answer would be yes and no depending whatthe cause of the pop is

      It sounds like ass, my first bike was used and the popping was one of the reasons I got rid of it, the others were that the meat head that worked on it, messed up the electrical, causing lights to go out, and it the pipes were so hot that it burned anything that touched them, even if it were for a very short amount of time, through the heat shield. IDK why people like it, it makes your bike sound like you have no idea how to set your exhaust up. The dealer took the bike back for as much as I paid for it on trade and I got a Fat Bob, was a great decision.

    I have a 2003 1200 sportster it always pops in the exhaust with the original stock pipes on deceleration. It’s a normal condition on a carburetor bike there’s always some fuel going through the engine out the exhaust on deceleration. I think it sounds cool I’m definitely not trying to fix it. The engine on my bike runs excellent leaving it alone.

"Fresh air can be drawn back into the exhaust system, and the un-burnt fuel that comes out of the motor mixes with a higher temperature in the exhaust system, and detonation happens... as the un-burnt fuel is being burnt." That detonation is happening in the exhaust system, not in the motor.

    deceleration pop : after finding the RPM band where reverberation happens, "then your tuner can properly adjust the fuel at that setting". You did not expand details about the mechanics of reverb in the pipe. It seems a rich mixture with unburnt gas is the hot header is the "go-to" first thought, but running lean and too hot has been an explaination..one that seems counter-intuative..either case seems to have the same cause - unburnt fuel. Why is there unburnt fuel after a performance change? Other than changes in cam valve timing, or combustion head mods etc., does not too rich ( too much fuel to air) seem the first thing to check?

    I'm confused....Doc said when you're coming off the freeway pull in the clutch and monitor the decel popping as the RPM drops. On my bike I don't get any decel popping when the clutch is pulled in...it only happens when I'm in gear and I lay off the throttle and let the bike engine brake to slow down.

The recommendation from the tuner was to "if you are getting some popping during decel we generally richen that area slightly in the VE table as well as the decel enleanment". Can you explain why adding MORE fuel would reduce the decel pop?

    • @kimharbison5277
      @kimharbison5277 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've read the added fuel makes the mixture is too rich to burn in the headpipe. Between using the 'firecracker' settings and running an AutoTune session with the FP3 I've eliminated probably 95% of the popping on my Sportster.

    Very simply put if you experience backfire when decelerating either your engine is not tuned properly or your exhaust aperture is too large for the engines displacement, or a combination of the two. And for those that think it sounds"cool" you wouldn't know a properly tuned motor from a hardboiled egg.

    A lean decel pop can potentially cause damage over a period of time whereas a rich decel pop is only possibly harmful when installing new jugs and slugs during the break in period, ring washout. An easy way to tell if you’re too rich or lean is pay attention to what the engine does during certain temperatures and this should steer you in the right direction.
