These guys are/were awesome. Their debut album is superb. I can't believe that I never listened to them back in the day. Better late than never, I guess.
Check out the superb Blowin Free - Wishbone Ash video live version on you tube it's 7 minutes 59 seconds long Jane & recorded in Bristol UK. Incredible guitars .
@@sharpestjim maybe because of their twin leads they got a reputation of being a hard rock/heavy metal band because of all such bands who copied it, but they were never hard rock/heavy metal
You know, I used to get stoned morning, noon and night in the seventies. Now I just turned 70 and the music sounds just as great without the weed. Just me. ☮️✌️
Andy Powell was one of the first to adopt the Gibson Flying V as his guitar of choice. Must shunned them due to lack of ease playing while sitting. I recall talking with a High School friend following this original broadcast. Wishbone Ash were new to him. He said "They were really good and the guy had wishbone shaped guitar". I just had to chuckle.
Cool back line of amps. Love the bass player’s dual bi-amped system. Very early and original for him! An orange amp driving each of the reflex cabs and a Marshall driving the two horns for a dirty high end. Must have been a PRESENCE
This is a great performance. The dual lead guitars put the band ahead of the curve at the time. This is also an advert for Gibson guitars. Flying V and a Les Paul. I love Fenders but Gibsons have a style all their own.
Gibsons have a fuller sound because of the humbucking pickups and the gibson underrated tremolo is attached to the wood of the guitar, where the strat's vibrola is attached with springs
Yeah that would set you back for some fat cash. Love that early Gibson V but the pickups sound thin to me. Check out those huge old Orange amps in the background they are plugged into.
They're great. Listen to Blowin' Free from their album Argus. Phoenix is another popular song off their debut record. Wishbone Ash are known for their dual guitar harmony lines. Influential like Thim Lizzy in that respect. Their first four albums are solid RockNRoll Classics!! Enjoy their music 🎶 🎵 🎸 🎸
Wow !!! Jailbailt !!! What a fantastic post !!! This was one of the most unfair bands in the history of Rock, it has the weight of Led Zeppelin or The Who. Warm greetings from Brazil
Those guys are great! I hadn't heard of them before seeing them on The Midnight Special. I did a double take at the guy in the red jacket. Looked a lot like Reginald Dwight there.Hehe. I love discovering bands from the past! Thanks, TMS!😊💜
What an amazing hard rocking band, love Wishbone Ash this performance is fantastic, especially the grungy bass rhythm! The lead singer is pretty hunky love his voice too! That’s a very cool “walking the dog” beat if I’ve ever heard one… 🎸🎸🤘
QUE SAFRA BOA ESSA DE 1973 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Esse resgate historico é de encher os olhos e alimentar o coração, parabéns The Midnight Show! LONG LIVE 2 WISHBONE ASH!
Saw them in Youngstown Ohio in 1972 along with Quicksilver Messenger Service and Blue Oyster Cult, been a fan ever since, going to see Andy Powell's Wishbone Ash November in Frederick Maryland, can't wait
Wow thanks. A lost wishbone 70s vid from the original lineup! Now I wish the French TV show I know exists will surface from 1973...thanks again will all these gems
I hadn't heard of this band, I'll have to check them out! Also, that's gotta be the 4th drummer in overalls I've seen on this channel (Phil Collins being another). Was that just the drummer uniform of 1973?
Wearing overalls with no shirt was the style of you like R&R where bell bottom jeans if you liked disco in the mid to late 70’s. Hell… I remember wearing overalls in the early 80’s
@@curtisphilumalee1447I used to wear overalls with tube tops back then as a lady, had a pair of “Hang Ten” brand w/metal snaps & little 👣, we loved them. And painter pants, remember those?? 😊
Yep I forgot the painter pants era. Lmao yep. I had a petite gf that used to wear tube tops all the time in the summer. Funny story. I got pulled over in my VW bug by a cop. He thought she was topless and told her to cover up. End up giving her my shirt. Couple blocks down the road she was mad as hell took it off. Crazy memories and simple fun time in life.
@@curtisphilumalee1447 Haha, I’d be mad as all get out too if I were her, that’s a very crazy story! I drove a ‘68 bug my older brother gave me when he joined the army~Germany. Taught me how to drive a stick, it came with an 8 track-box of his tapes, was a happy 16yr old girl. They were fun to drive, especially in the snow~ice; engine in the back helped!
I was lucky enough to see them play live many times here in the UK Kitty ,a fantastic live band . Check out Live Dates from 1973 not a single overdub was added. Superb album
This Gibson from Ted Tuner has a bad tone and makes it sound like the pickups are bad. Despite that, Andy Powell's Flying V wasn't exactly as hot as he wears it either. I believe the sound check was not good. But the video is great. Thanks.
Saw them in 73 with the Climax Blues Band. Both bands were excellent
I saw the same tour , what a great time to be alive, also the Humble Pie and Foghat tour amongst many others , '73 was a killer year !
Nothing like the original lineup of Wishbone Ash!
*_My grandpa was (And still is) a huge fan of Wishbone Ash - He has all their albums, I really love "Phoenix" from their first Album ..._*
Jane, your grand dad has a very good taste concerning music🎼👍Greetings from France 🇫🇷 🌹

twin lead guitars for the win.

I never knew that Wishbone Ash was on The Midnight Special !!! " Jail Bait " is A great song !!!!
same with me, likewise Slade, Status Quo
FINALLY, great camera work showing all the musicians at the right time
Makes a bloody change, doesn't it !?

The head on top of the two Orange heads looks like a Hiwatt rather than a Marshall. Still, great sound!

me either
Time Was is my # 1 Wishbone Ash song, also from the Argus album.
Andy Powell and Ted Turner at one time we're voted as 2 of the top 10 most most important guitarists in rock history.
I saw these guys live back around 73-74 and they were great. Great musicians.
These guys are still putting out albums. Nice.
One of my favorite bands. I saw them open for Rush when I was stationed in Germany in the 80's. The original lineup by the way. Great show!
1973,I was 14! Have been a long time fan of W A., this is their best line. up ever. Has never been the same after Martin left! ❤from 🇫🇷 🌹
Or Ted Turner for that matter...
@@groundhog713 That's right !He was missed too !
this episode first aired only five days before the legend Bruce Lee had died.
Pretty amazing when you think about it: No pedalboards. No racks. Just guitar -> cable -> amp.

That bass! Love these guys. Saw them three times over the years. OG band my favorite.
That LP Custom the lead singer is playing looks pretty sweet!
Steve Upton doing his best Bill Oddie impression behind the kit there
Total garage band look, especially the foam padding covering the mic! Love it!!
Static electricity shock hurts like hell on the lips. I’d cover that up too.
That’s to block the “wind”, like Jimi Hendrix used in Maui, HI, 7/30/70 🙃

Saw them in concert back in the 1980s in Worthing, great stuff!
I saw them about this time, open for The Who. I've seen them several times since then‼🎸
One of my all time fave bands.
I was on Leave from Army. I saw this then !!
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell yeah !!!!!
Their album “Argus” is on my wish list, pretty please !!! 😍🤞
Saw them in 1975 at winterland San Francisco
It's definitely my go to song of theirs.
Phoenix, that is.
My band ❤

Saw them twice during this period, with Climax BB and again at the Sheboygan Armory (Wisconsin). Nice memory refresher
Starting at the 0:15 it sounds a lot like George Thorogood and the Destroyers, “One Bourbon, One Scotch and One Beer”
Very 'White Stripes' i love it
Raw high powered electric blues. Superb
Wow whatta generation it waz 70s rock man yeeeaaahhhhh
Awesome. ❤

Orange amps. Yeah!
Another rock song called Jail Bait? Nice 😎
Not sure what year this was,but their playing is so tight. Great stuff.
man these guys new how to play
Right you are.
And one or two Vocal Master cabinets for monitors Yeah, “What?”
WOW!......they got Elton John to play the flying V guitar! 🤪😝🤣😂
Twin lead guitars. Accept no substitute.
Wishbone Ash was far better at prog than with blues. (:
Left handed drummer!!!!

If ZZ Top shaved. And died virgins.
Probably their finest song..The BBC version from 1971 is a bit tighter, and Ted has a better sounding guitar.
Jail Bate? ha ha...I guess the name The Pedophiles was taken.
It’s Jail Bait and it’s not the name of the band .😂
Lowest common denominator boogie sludge
listening to this third class shitty blues, i can't believe how they managed to record such a masterpiece as argus
