It was pretty funny. In the real world cylinders are left all over the place. Most job sites are a disaster area at best, so finding a safe location is practically impossible.

The air test HAS to be done on the ground, clearly says it in the ACI book
Per ASTM C231, section 8.1.1 the bowl must be placed "on a flat, level, firm surface." This does not indicate it must be on the ground.
