      I read the earliest depictions of wrestling (not necessarily submissions) were Neolithic so one would assume that people have been doing this since before homosapiens evolved.

    Incredible coach very importantly points out that the sub won’t always work as we are all shaped differently. Too many egotistical coaches out there that say a sub will work no matter what. The other great thing is coach wants to have questions asked of him. Amazing work

      Thats the best smell test of if a dojo is BS or not. If they ask for questions, they believe in their system and know how to defend it and explain how it works. Those places That get offended by questions, they dont know the science behind what theyre teaching

      things go in trends. It's frustrating and a real shame-- I'm in a major city and there are exactly 0 catch/sub wrestling gyms but a bjj on every corner. Just wait a few years and hopefully it'll come around again.

    I havent told anyone at my BJJ clubs, but I am studying your materials. BJJers hate catch subs threat in ways you have no idea. When they ask me, what I do, I just say, its bjj, but another way to grapple.

    Wow that is slick, been a boxer and nak muay for 15 years and in Muay Thai we have BJJ classes that follow after our adult classes, anyone who's ever been to legitimate gym can attest to the overlap and how the programs are structured but out of those 15 years i've never seen anything like this during their trainings ... I'm seriously interested in learning Catch wrestling, if you ask me this is the dominate force of grappling, thank you for sharing this wisdom with all of us and i seriously hope there's more attention brought to this dark art.

    At 4:07 and 5:29, with the left leg around Bane's right arm, especially at 4:07, I've got the impression that he can work it into a toe hold while standing on the left leg in the right armpit using the forearm to crank down

    I usually go for a rolling toe hold from dela Riva, but tend to lose position once my training partners catch on to what I'm doing. I like this variation much more

    Coach Joel The techniques you teach and show here I really like good stuff I use it and it work brilliantly in BJJ classes in no gi although I wanna use it in GI classes as well...... and I know the IBJJF rules are weird and can’t do much there so I like NAGA or the GOOD FIGHT Let’s say I got more freedom to use it there!!!

    You can counter De la Riva with kneebar... and calf slicer if opponent crosses the legs, or take back.

    From England, not so far from the UK Snake Pit. Just came across the video. Great stuff, I teach Japanese Jujutsu so no floor butt scooting with worms 😂. On a side note, one of our students is the great grandson of Willian 'Pop' Charnock AKA Pop Saxon, who taught Billy Riley and I'm led to believe also Billy Robinson way back when.

      Thank you. Do you have any more bio info on William Charnock? He did train Billy Riley, but there was a fallout between them. Never heard anyone mention him as Pop Saxon. I know he was of Irish decent. Karl Gotch worked with him but not Billy Robinson. Any further info that you have on his story regarding who trained him, his birth date etc. would be amazing to learn.     I love catch wrestling! I trained with Erik Paulson for about two years in the early 90s. After the late 90s I only rolled with people every few years or so. But I remembered the catch mentality and really discombobulated Jujitsu guys with catch moves. The stuff is so great. Now I'm old, but working some of this stuff with my son. It is fun as heck!

    Is this actually safe to learn? Like the sparring that must follow instruction like this, is there much injury due to drilling leg locks/toe holds?

      Yes, it is no more dangerous than any other grappling art when instructed by competent coaches with the correct student to coach ratio. Ive never witnessed or personally experienced a higher number of injuries than I ever sustained in 22 years of BJJ & Judo. - Best regards - J. Bane

      Would be the same. Nothing here is based on size or strength as should any worthwhile grappling technique. However, big guy TECHNICAL moves work for everyone. Smaller guys moves don’t typically work the other way around. Size is definitely not an obstacle here with these counters to your opponent entangling him/herself.     Ur also in a perfect position for a rolling toe hold. as long as u fight off the hand grips first. & hook the opposite leg with your right leg as u roll to the side of the foot your applying the rolling toe hold with . 🤙🏼
