5.4 with the 3V was terrible, if you weren’t immediately on time with maintenance on the nose, you were screwed and even doing the maintenance you almost had a chance… If you’re buying one used go for the 4.6 hands down.
@@lowccperformance4059 As a long time F series guy, my heart will always sit with the 9th gen, followed by the 7th, then the 8th. THEN the 11th gen trucks. But yes. They're the best looking MODERN F150 for sure.
I actually own a lariat 04 4 door/ super crew I think he called it and maaan this just solved a bunch of my problems. Within the comments and the video 🤘🤘💪
Designed in the late 1990s, finished for approval in January of 2000, and finalized by exec management and Ford family in August of 2000 as the truck you see in this video. Came out 9 months behind schedule, in September of 2003. Takes a long time to design a vehicle.
And now nearly 20 years later for these earliest years of the generation, many of these trucks remain on the highways and job sites of America even despite the 5.4’s notorious reliability. That’s quite the pickup truck
And this is the thing people dont realize. When I got my 5.4 3V, I didnt notice how many of these trucks were on the road and now that I drive them, I'd see about 20 a day. I even talk with these Triton owners and talk about all the issues they have and we laugh about it. The engine might be bad if not taken care of but these trucks are still working. They aren't mall crawlers like many of the newer trucks you see on the road today. When I see them, they are hauling and labeled with what ever company owns them. Sure many are still not used as work trucks but we see them doing everything. What I want to see is how well the Triton 3V holds up in lighter trucks, like a 2022 F-150 which weights much less than my 07. Very good trucks AND they are still lookers with insane aftermarket support. I really wish Ford would bring back this body style.
But there was a manual available. They also left out the 4.2 v6. The v6 single cabs had the manual transmission or did those come back for 2005 and up?
They've already done that. They've been doing that with remanufactured ones for nearly a decade now. You literally can buy a reman for 5000 with a 7 year 1 million mile no fault warranty to it depending on where you buy it. Powertrain products.
Only bad if you don't maintain them. My friend has an 05 F-150 with the 5.4, and he has over 290k miles on it. The truck has been in his family since it was brand-new, and they've always changed the oil themselves every 6,000 miles.
@SaltLife There are people who took care of these vehicles, and did the maintenance and still had issues, you were one of the few that may have been better at maintenance and did it right on the nose… You also may have been lucky there are people who are loyal Ford owners, who have bough F150s for years and ended up having the issue with specifically this generation and engine. The 4.6 didn’t have this problem. Do you think those people didn’t do maintenance?
My super crew 4 door saved my life in a 70 mph Roll over crash caused by a careless driver of the other car , walked away without a scratch after going over 4 times down an embankment…
155000. Just changed the timing chains, cam phasers, and guides. Upgraded the oil pump to the Weller. Installed one piece spark plugs (Ec3). Runs like it did new. Best part? No monthly payment. God bless.
I agree. It's just shame the 4.6L was so underpowered and the 5.4L 3v had a few major design flaws. This generation with a modern 5.0L Coyote V8 and 6-Speed transmission would have been the perfect modern truck.
Common sense would tell you, not to expect a review on such an Escalade year. It had barely any changes for 2003, for them to waste time reviewing it. A Google search would highlight that.
@@lowccperformance4059 Exactly, why these questions are asked, doesn't make sense. I wouldn't ask for a 2005 F-150 review, because this one has it covered.
My only regret when buying it in used condition, was getting it from a generic dealership run by shysters; The only reason why I bought it, was because my folks have no intention of driving out of state, let alone to its borders when we were debating on getting another vehicle after I crashed my GMC Terrain. Suffice to say, my 2007 Ford F-150 XLT still works albeit it being in a state of disrepair and the frame is completely rotted beyond saving.
@@nathanmcdonald610 Exactly, I hate when idiots born yesterday don't take into account the past marketplace and factors at hand. I remember CBS oe NBC News in January 2003, doing a cover story of both LA and Detroit auto shows, being fascinated by how "luxurious" pickups had become and the 2004 F150 was front and center in their report piece. GM had to be ashamed. GM were just about finishing their own GMT900 interior design proposals for 2007 in secret at this time, while their current GMT800 had been eclipsed by this new truck and the 2004 Titan LE. The GMT800 interiors were trash from day 1 and the Escalade EXT was glitzed up trash as well. The '02 Ram interior easily overshot them, before regressing for 2006. It would take the next gen Ram to be class leading.
How naive, as it has nothing to do with the year you were even born. This aired in 2003, clearly not the year you were born. Judging by every retro review, it seems that you clueless dunces always see a model year and think it's literally when it hit the streets, even though that's rarely the case. All of us alive back then saw these '04 trucks prototype testing in camouflage back in 2001 and 2002, leaked online at the end of 2002 with no camo, and then fully revealed on stage in Detroit in January 2003. Already saw these trucks at Ford dealers by the fall of 2003, so 2004 ain't it. Try again. New cars come out months before the new year, for this to always be forgotten like it's rocket science. Everything coming out as NEW in *2004* (Jan-Dec 04) were *2005* models or prototype (preview) showings of *2006* models due next year in *2005* . Same old naive bs, over and over. Smfh
@@nathanmcdonald610 For someone who was 16 in 2004, you clearly don't remember much from that year. I saw this generation for the first time in December 2002 when it was leaked online before Christmas and later when it was revealed in January 2003 at Detroit International Auto Show. I don't see what it has to do with someone born in 2004, considering it was released the year before that anyway. 2004 was all about the 5th generation '05 Mustang and '05 GT(40). This truck wasn't new-new anymore. Anyone who is an alleged car enthusiast, should know better. Next year's model comes out the fall or summer before the new year starts. That's basic rule of thumb. It was actually slower than the previous (1997 - 2003) F-150's. This generation went from a 5.4L 2v to a 5.4L 3v design which actually gained it about 40hp and 15ftlbs of peak torque, but this generation also went from an open C-Channel frame to a fully boxed frame and gained about 1000lbs in total curb weight on average which completely negated the power increase for the 2004 model year. The 1997 - 2003 F-150's with the 5.4L 2v would regular do 0-60 in mid 8 second range which is blazing fast but for that time it was plenty quick and competitive for a full size pickup.
@texas tootin That’s because most of them had the 5.4 3V which was a piece of trash engine plagued with problems. The 4.6 which it also came with was an excellent bulletproof engine though.
@@2H2521 the 4.6 is certainly bulletproof but it has its own problems. Goes through belts like crazy, really underpowered, and a lot of plastic housings and such
The engine wasn't really lazy, it was on par with everything else at the time except the new for 2003 5.7L Hemi's that made 45hp more. The 5.4L made very similar power to the 5.6L used in the Nissan Titans at the time and outpowered the 5.3L GM trucks by a significant portion, in particular in low end torque. The real issue with this generation F-150 was it's curb weight and wide gear spacing in it's 4-Speed auto. The Hemi and 5.6L Titan's had the benefit of 5-Speed transmissions with closer ratios and while the Silverado's at the time we're still using a 4-Speed like the F-150 they we're also about 700lbs lighter than a comparable F-150 at the time. High curb weight plus wide spaced 4-Speed auto is what really killed this trucks performance. When they went to a 6-Speed auto in 2009 the 5.4L woke up significantly, but only continued on for two model years with the 6-Speed before it was replaced by the much more powerful 5.0L V8, Ecoboost and 6.2L V8.
@@nathanmcdonald610 I get what your saying. I mean in the sense of being engineered and manufactured, they added more internal parts (vct/vvt system) without upgrading the oiling system, from what I learned and experienced. The design is good on paper but it was simply executed poorly in the 5.4/4.6 3v era.
Actually by 2009 and 2010 they had pretty much fixed most of the issues that plagued the 5.4L and on top of that the 6-Speed really woke it up, but by 2011 the 5.0L, Ecoboost and 6.2L took the 5.4L's place.
Worst F-150 generation by far, this was a significant downgrade from the previous ones. They were decent if they had the 4.6, but pure trash if they had the 5.4 3V!

@Justin Hopper You’re exact right!
Crazy to think how far trucks have come. Now my f150 2.7 with half the displacement and 2 less cylinders makes more power than those trucks
The 2.7 would slaughter the 5.4 in a race and it gets probably 30% better economy

This was ford’s pinnacle. Great truck, good price. Today’s model, it’s just an ok truck at a huge price. The 5.4 v8 only lasted 100,000 miles before major repairs but all in all…
5.4 with the 3V was terrible, if you weren’t immediately on time with maintenance on the nose, you were screwed and even doing the maintenance you almost had a chance… If you’re buying one used go for the 4.6 hands down.
the 3 valve was the worst engine that they have put in these. I can't think of a worse one since ford trucks are usually really good!

20 years later the F-Series is still the best selling vehicle in the USA.. guess it's holding onto it's #1 spot
The start of the thickening of modern trucks
I'd argue that probably started with the 1994 Dodge Ram when the went for that daily driving a Semi appearance.
That truck looked very modern for a 2004 model
That’s a good design for 2004
Designed in the late 1990s, finished for approval in January of 2000, and finalized by exec management and Ford family in August of 2000 as the truck you see in this video.

They made up for it in 2011. Very happy with my 6.2L F150

For 2004 it was. Compared to anything GM or Dodge had in 04 this truck had hugely superior interior and build quality and material.
@@nathanmcdonald610 you ain’t that old your in your 30s
@@jmin8400 I'm confused as to why you're so triggered over me stating I felt old because the OP was born the year I got my drivers license. What does any of the rhetoric you've listed in your comment have to do with my comment about being 16 in 2004?

How about them weak 5.4s lol
9.9 seconds to 60? That’s sure slow.
😪😪
As a mechanic I have literally never worked on a single f150 of this gen that hasn’t been a complete piece of garbage
@texas tootin That’s because most of them had the 5.4 3V which was a piece of trash engine plagued with problems. The 4.6 which it also came with was an excellent bulletproof engine though.

Good truck, lazy engine.
😪😪
