09/10/1993. Bryant-Denny Stadium (Tuscaloosa, AL). The Vanderbilt Commodores (1-0) vs. the #11 Alabama Crimson Tide (1-0). Broadcast on Jefferson Pilot.
I'm not an Alabama fan, but I really liked this '94 team. It wasn't anywhere close to the most talented team they've had; but they were so good in the clutch, and a lot of fun to watch. It seemed like they barely beat everyone that year, in their wins... the only blemish on the record being a one point loss to Florida in the SEC championship game.
I remember watching this. These were Jefferson Pilot games of the week and they were always played at 12:30. I don't know if it was the early game times, but it always seemed Alabama would sleep walk through these games. The 94 team would always keep it way to close for comfort
It would have been tough for Gerry DiNardo to turn down LSU at the end of this season. But I thought he did an excellent job at Vanderbilt. His I-Bone offense at Colorado was special, and with a few athletes and a little patience, it could have been at Vanderbilt too. Yet, he is one of the few coaches to leave Vanderbilt for another job without a pink slip.
