Build a Better Rifle Connection // Building A Bridge Part 2

  • In this video, I discuss and demonstrate modern precision rifle techniques. I emphasize the importance of making a strong connection with the rifle, using a bipod effectively, and maintaining a consistent firing position. I also demonstrate techniques for improving recoil management, including proper indexing, using a rear bag, and building a consistent rifle bridge. The video concludes with a drill you can practice at 100 yards.

    The reason your vid is epic, is because its about fundamentals. The best scope, chassi, caliber etc will not shot for you. Thanks for putting in work. So we can learn.

    Appreciate you making this video. I admit that I was one of those individuals you called out when you were talking about not bridging the rifle, and only squeezing the rear bag to get my POA.
    Now I have something to practice on and make my corrections.

    Often people learn best from *seeing* what not to do, not just being *told* what not to do.
    At 16:40 you do just that, and that is absolutely the best part of the video for me from a teaching perspective.
    This video could be called, “The Breath is the Tell.” The tell being the giveaway in poker.
    Easily the best video I’ve seen on this subject.

    Hey Phil with recoil management and light rifles for hunting, if you were running a suppressor do you limit your caliber to aid in spotting shots or do you just manage the heavy recoil. That’s for the great drill.

    This technique looks great! From your last suggestion of getting the rifle as medial on my collar bone as possible and applying less cheek pressure I tightened my groups noticeably. But I continue to see my rifle hop to theft on every shot. I can't wait to try this technique and see the results. I'll keep you posted on the results.

    I got to put part1 and this vid in to practice today at the range. I purposely didn’t use my protektor model or game changer bags. It was the first time shooting this specific rifle where my poa did not shift and I didn’t have to do anything to be back on target. The amount of joy felt was uncanny. Thank you Phil!! Regardless, I still want to get out and take one of your precision courses sometime

    Thanks for the video Phil,
    Quick question regarding short LOP. Everyone in PRS are shortening their LOP these days since it’s easier to shoot positional and they are bringing the rifle more medial and away from the shoulder pocket. How does that translate into shooting prone and building the bridge. Do you prefer standard lop or shorter and where do you put the buttstock shooting prone, medial or pocket. Thank you

    • @velayo_0317
      @velayo_0317  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      This is a great and complex question. I have a multifaceted response and sending this over a message will not do it justice. I just have to do a video on it. Long story short, I prefer to set my LOP in the prone and adjust when I’m in positional with my body position to recreate my prone body/face mechanics.

    • @velayo_0317
      @velayo_0317  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I’ve found that heavier rifles, small cartridges require less rearward pressure (PRS style rifles) than lighter rifles, larger cartridges (hunting rifles). A good starting point for hunting rifles would be the weight of the rifle x 1.5 (so if it’s a 12 lb gun, try pulling 18 lbs). Again starting point until you find what works for you. If you pull too much and cause unnecessary muscle tension it is not repeatable nor sustainable in a position if that makes sense.

    I would love to see more videos on learning to shoot. Like a zero to hero series.
    I am a new shooter and am learning by myself. I am having a hard time finding a good series on how to shoot. My rifle is a Howa 1500 with an MDT stock. I reall'y don't know what I am doing but if I get 2 moa at 100 yards I had a good day. I really want to get this down to 1moa max reliably as I would like to be able to hunt up to 300 yards with confidence.
    Many of the issues such as barrel hopping up and to the left are some of the issues I have and after watching this I realised I am putting 2 much weight on the bag. Thanks for teaching my something new today. I will try to put this into practice my next day at the range.

  • @Rico11b
    @Rico11b หลายเดือนก่อน

    It's impossible to build the bridge and have the stock STAY in your pocket WITHOUT some loading against the bipod. You can't have ZERO pressure loading against the bipod, if you did the butt-stock would slip and drop instantly to the ground. Your bipod feet were also dragging on the concrete. That causes vibration and tiny hops on the feet making recoil management difficult. The legs of your bipod need to have enough travel to prevent the feet from being drug backwards during recoil. Just because a bipod costs a lot doesn't mean it works properly.

    • @velayo_0317
      @velayo_0317  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I don’t think I said you should have zero pressure loading the bipod. In the video, I said you shouldn’t need to drive your whole body weight into it to build a solid firing position. And I disagree and showed you it’s possible to manage recoil even with the rifle on concrete. Sure, there’s pressure being applied, but it’s not forward pressure.
