In the good old times ending 2005 we had many Busses with the Mercedes V8 engines on the markets, but now there are only inline 6 engines the y sounds like a vacuum cleaner....I can remember the times, when you can here different types of V8s in busses or trucks...from Mercedes, Scania, IVECO, Renault trucks with MackV8, SISU with Rolls-Royce engines and the good old Magirus-Deutz aircooled engines.....oooooohhhhh man....that was sooooo AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the past we bought a 96 Renault Magnum truck with the Mack V8...cuted the pipe and now it sounds brilliant and an old Mercedes truck from 1977 with an 12,5 litre V8....some big toys for old Kids;)And in the mean time we had only one V8 truck to work with....an 2012 Scania with only the 730hp 16.3 litre V8 that is now in production.....all this toys you can find on my channel :DI hope my english is good to understand ;) BR from Germany, Roger
Some of the older 6 pots had a great sound. Newer ones not so much. Nothing will come close to a v8 however. As for 4 pot diesels in buses, unless its a mini bus its a waste of time

.....hahaha....its wasn´t me,I was the cameraman! The Startingman was the father of the guy behind the bus....he was manual pumping the Diesel,because the fuelpressure was to low and the engine wasn´t starting....
Diesel Buddys at Geissler Transporte we have bigger busses with 350hp inline 6 and it still goes 110km/hr on the highway .... I think the model is Volvo 8900

This engine is very drivable and a usable powerband from 8-900 to 2000 rpm, and the tourqe curve feels really flat. Exactly the opposite to old Volvo D10 diesels with the non vastegate turbo where you needed to keep the revs above 1400 rpm.

For US viewers, just observe how low the engine is placed and pushed in the chassis instead of sitting on top of it.
for this Neoplan- Busses in Europe the placement of the V8 was absolutely normal!
