    I love how by the end of Dance the entire world is about ready to fall apart, with no Others needed. The drama in Kings Landing, the battle of Ice outside Winterfell , the battle of Fire in Mereen , the murder of Jon and the chaos that will follow afterwards at the Wall. Jon Con and fAegon tearing through Westeros....and then behind it all the Others ready to make their move.
    TWOW will be INSANE.

      This is why I'm not salty that George is taking his time. He's one man. TWoW is juggling like five major stories at once. All of them very interesting and can go a myriad of ways.

    • @coqui9879
      @coqui9879 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Vicious Zero I’m worried there’s too much going on in TWOW. I don’t understand how it’s possible for all of those stories to physically fit into one book, and that’s ignoring Dany’s story in the Dothraki Sea and whatever Arya and Sansa are going to do.

    • @Hot18Shot
      @Hot18Shot 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @@coqui9879 Yeah, it'd be hard to see how he could fit it all in one book, let's not forget;
      - Bran and Blood Raven
      - The Night's Watch and Jon's revival
      - Young Grif and Jon Con's probable demise
      - Stannis vs Ramsey
      - The fall of the Frey's / Northern Conspiracy
      - The Dornish Plot
      - The battle in Meeren
      - Little Robin's harem
      - Victarion
      - Euron and Old Town
      - Cersei and her inevitable loss of control in King's Landing
      - Tyrian's arc
      - Lady Stoneheart's revenge
      - Arya's arc
      - What's up with Patchface
      - How Jon's parentage affects all of Westeros
      - And, of course, The White Walkers
      Etc.
      There's just... So much. And George says he wants it to be only one book. It best be one helluva book then because you've got all these characters in all these continents with all their schemes. AND you have to make their successes and failures between one another make perfect sense.
      I know there's a video trying to shave off characters logically for the next book but even then he had trouble doing so. The best way would probably be to kill off the majority of characters in the first half of the book and get the rest where they need to be. I suspect ADofS to be a full flashforward, but I wonder if that gives more or less time in the story to wrap up these plotlines.
      Though I am optimistic we'll get a release date by the end of the year, I'd rather he be careful not to rush all of this. This is his magnum opus after all. In the end, I don't think how long we waited mattered, but the quality of the books that will stand in the decades to come.

    now I'm picturing a white haired, red eyed Jon next to his red eyed white wolf. They look and move like one being, connected and inseperable. Whatever Jon does, Ghost complements. Jon looks like a Ghost become flesh, and his demeanor reflects the change. He has this sharpened sense about him, more composed and watchful. (the visual change would also help convince people he actually died, because you can tell something drastic changed. This is not the same man that joined the nights watch)

    At the least Jon will be more ruthless when he returns, a piece of him will be chipped away, being murdered by his own brothers of the Night's Watch will no doubt have a profound impact and some of Ghost's wild animalistic nature may have rubbed off on him. All these factors will result in a distinct new incarnation of Jon Snow.
    On another note, remember in ADWD when Bran was warging Summer and meets the wolf that Varamyr Six Skins ended up in at the end of the prologue? When he locked eyes with it Bran knew that someone's mind dwelt within that wolf. By that point Varamyr was too far gone but there was still enough of a presence for Bran to notice. Moments like this further my belief in Jon residing within Ghost, and we definitely need 1 chapter from that strange PoV in TWOW.

    My theory is Mel is going to sacrifice Monster, Gillys baby
    The same as we're tricked into thinking (f)Arya was the important one in the Winterfell rescue (really it was Theon) we were tricked into thinking Mance son was the important one in the baby swap
    Why else does Gillys baby exist in the story? what role could he possibly have to play? why was Craster allowed to keep giving sons to the Others? the only reason that makes sense is Bloodraven needed one of Crasters babies himself eventually for a little magic

    The fact that on the show he was called "The white wolf" while being king may be taken from the idea that the people will start having about him while resurrected and being in part Ghost (A white wolf), so he will be more "Stark" since he will have Wolfblood and therefore being more irrational and savage. All attributes that people in the North always liked about the Starks.
    On the show he was called white wolf almost without a reason, since Ghost disappears for entire seasons...

    The moment I read this al those years ago, I cried... Because after Stannis, Jon's story was the most compelling to me. The 2 always in the shadow of a brother (stannis by Robert with his charmed and Jon with his Robert the heir of winterfell, while he is the bastard in the back) I truly hope Jon's ressurection will be keeping him almost exactly the same and ghost alive... After the show I thought maybe Jon will be bound to the north so his choice to stay with the wildlings is more of necessity than for will. After he completes his task he can't leave the lands of always winter.

    "I had bad dreams," Shireen told him. "About the dragons. They were coming to eat me".
    I never considered that Jon was the dragon, and that these dreams possibly foreshadowed Shireen being sacrificed to save him. I always thought if a dragon were to kill her it might be fAegon. My only question would be what other dragon is involved, because Shireen said "dragons", so there has to be one more.

      YES

    • @poseidonc1259
      @poseidonc1259 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Yes, I have been thinking more & more about the symbolism of The Trident River in this regard. Your question brings this to my mind again.
      Blue Fork, Green Fork, & Red Fork, all joining at (or near) The Ruby Ford, which is where Rhaegar Targaryen’s King’s Blood was spilt. The Ruby Ford is also just North of The Isle of Faces in The God’s Eye Lake, which is covered in Weirwood Trees.
      And as The Weirwood-man himself said:
      “Time is different for a tree than for a man. Sun and soil and water, these are the things a weirwood understands, not days and years and centuries. For men, time is a river. We are trapped in its flow, hurtling from past to present, always in the same direction. The lives of trees are different. They root and grow and die in one place, and that river does not move them. The oak is the acorn, the acorn is the oak.”
      -Lord Brynden Rivers (Bloodraven)
      “The Dragon must have three heads.”
      -Prince Rhaegar Targaryen
      The way that The Trident River is a confluence of 3 tributaries (Blue, Green, & Red Forks), Jon Snow’s resurrection could be the confluence of 3 magical forces, Blue-Ice, Green-Seer, Red-Fire Magic.

  • @MagnaMater2
    @MagnaMater2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Ah, my favourite topic - Thank you! :) - Jon is by heritage of BOTH sides mainly a Blackwood-warg. He's a wolfman. A new edition of Bloodraven. - I wouldn't mind if Jon stayed in Ghost for a long time and turned very wolfish. He was never very comfortable around humans and might be a lot happier being extra-smart-Ghost while his corpse is preserved in an ice-cell until the wall breaks. (If Euron gets a hold on Sams Horn, it might do so very quickly) - Though it might be, that Melisandre wakes his corpse by error trying to resurrect Stannis. But as it is, I could imagine the Wildlings - and the Giant would be completely ok, if a magical direwolf led them south, to aid Stannis. As a direwolf he can go directly for Ramsey's throat without cultural niceties and speeches. - But I wondered about Arya/Nymeria when Arya was stabbed in the Show, she might run off the Faceless Men to avenge Jon, and I somehow cannot see them taking that very kindly. - I would rate it a happy ending, if Ghost and Nymeria trotted back into the deep North to their kin after the end.
    If by a mixture of ice and fire magic his body manages to go back to a normal non-zombie-life he might go north with Val after all is finished, but I don't think she'll survive. I like the direwolf-end best, the zombie-lovestory would be... just urgh... gross...
    He might need a human body for a while to deal with Daenerys and Euron (not necessarily if the later turns into Cthulhu, in that case a Jon Twoskin and a very big dragon would be best, their godly battle-magic-rage could cause Volcanos and Earthquakes and Tsunamies and break the Neck and split Westeros) but... I'm no big fan of this either.
    Since Daenerys already had a relationship with a man whose main vocabulary was 'No' (mind as I read it, Jon's throat was slashed and just like Stonehart he might not be able to speak without perhaps Melisandres repair-necklace. Ghost is mute, so most likely is he.) she could even build a short romance on this... but I never shipped that aunt&nephew thing. Yes, she saw a blue rose grow from an ice-cell and since it's a plant growing from an icy seed it might be tree-magic, it might be 'true life' (from frozen sperm) and it would be perfect for dynastic purposes, but Daenerys is a conqueror and no breeding mare, so... most likely not. - Though it might need a baby to make a Lord Protector Bran 'Drogon' Stark in whatever is left of King's Landing - IS there anything left?... (behold, how I wriggle and twist and salto trying to fit the Show end in my argumentation...) Hm... for making Bran Lord Protector according to medievel usances he would need to be the closest male relative... otherwise the southern Lords would never have that, their royal blood is as good and old as that of the Starks, he can't be King, unless he uses Drogon's power and reigns by terror.
    By the way magical first-men bloodlines: Waymar Royce seems to be a cousin of Jon and the Starks and the Blackwoods. - Houses Royce and Waynwood and Templeton are in the run for the Stark-heritage in the North according to Lady Catelyn when Robb tried to appoint an heir for the North. - Only the Targaryen and Dayne-blood ran too thin in Royce, so he was iced.
    And what I missed: nobody talked about Jon and cousin 'steel-skin' Sansa. Steel and Ice with fiery hairs and fiery eyes might clash and fuse rather beautifully into a next generation. - THAT might be a reason for a regent Bran Stark (AND a perfect reason for Daenerys and Sansa getting really bitchy against each other.)

    Perhaps Jon could be like Varamyr Sixskins in the sense that his soul is divided between his own undead body and Ghost’s, and the only way to keep him from succumbing to the evil of whatever magic revives him is to keep Ghost alive to stay tethered to his soul, keeping it at least halfway in a living body, one that, while being an animal’s, is not corrupted by magic.

    Ghost as Jon's Soul jar-Quinn and Dave-you nailed it. And you're right
    This story is going to be gnarly once GRRM finishes Winds Of Winter.
    I still think Melisandre may sacrifice herself so Jon fulfills the prophecy. (use the breath /the fire of life resurrection. She may offer herself up instead of Shireen to ensure Jon becomes Azor Ahai).
    You may be right about Ghost the Wolf is sacrificed.
    A Jon/Ghost POV sounds light he'll level up as a warging fire/ice wight. juicy... served bloody and rare.

    It would be interesting if Lady Stoneheart acts as a sort of precedent for Jon's return. I mean, the northern lords might not believe that Jon died and was brought back because of the sheer absurdity of it all, but it they meet with the walking corpse of Catelyn before that....
    It could also serve as a sort of chalange for the ressurected Jon, having on one side the people that see him as a form of messiah but on the other side you have those that fear him as a second Stoneheart

    • @PedroLucas-mg5je
      @PedroLucas-mg5je 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And if Stoneheart crowns Jon King in the North instead of all the other Stark children (they must reunite in order for this scene to happen) in a room full of northern lords, I expect a reaction similar to when Rhaegar crowned Lyanna Queen of Love and Beauty in the Tourney of Harrenhal! (I even imagine Blackfish or Wyman Manderly having a similar reaction as Robert)

    @alexb3604 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Great job hitting all the most anticipated concepts from TWoW and this is surely near the top for myself and many others , in terms of Jon's resurrection. Excellent ideas as always , the semantics with the resurrection are certainly up for debate , will it be Fire or Ice magic that reanimates him ? both are in close proximity and both candidates , as suggested given Jon's location in the ice cells not only does that preserve him but becomes possible for the Others to control JS' body (most likely temporarily) , Greenseer magic is also a possibility as mentioned we just have not been given resurrection evidence via that specific medium. The main determining factors will be how long in-between his death and resurrection since we know that is significant , which exact magic does it and the unprecedented element of a warg being resurrected (including how long being in Ghost). Interesting stuff , i liked the mention of Jon who is the embodiment of the ASoIaF concept if somehow he comes sort of a fire wight / ice wight hybrid or an ice body with fiery animation.
    So many ways it can go , I do think Jon will leave the NW post-resurrection , might be one of the few things the show got right , perhaps via Stannis' authority or Robb's will or just of his own volition. Although the show certainly got wrong the lack of personal change with Jon's resurrection , we see all instances of such occurrences there is a cost and alteration , for us its just not clear how much with the amount of time , type of magic, being a warg / warging into Ghost and even being kept in an ice cell variables factor in. I do think there will be a physical change , possibly the white hair mentioned or even red ices but personality wise from either the time elapsed , the manner and / or the interim warging i do expect a more wolfish Jon. Which could manifest as more ruthless , harsh , driven , aggressive, more alpha and even more protective of his pack. Eagerly awaiting to see how this concept plays out in the books.

    • @gagstersps3
      @gagstersps3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think we mights see a resurrection that combines all three types of magic. Rheagar died on the trident where the red, blue, and green fork meets, with each river probably symbolizing the three types of magic. So you could say that he was given as a sacrifice to those magic powers. It would then be cool if his son was ressurected by all of these powers combined.
      Maybe Melisandre will do the fire ritual by sacrificing Ghost and Shireen or something, while Bran does some crazy stuff that he doesn't have control over (possibly sacrifices Bloodraven in the process), and then at the same time the Others will try to snatch Jon's body.

    • @alexb3604
      @alexb3604 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@gagstersps3 i like it , good catch with that symbolism , the three colors representing those magical types , the spot where Rhaegar died and this is Rhaegar's son we are dealing with . Jon is the embodiment of the Song of Ice & Fire with his bloodlines after all and as a warg he has old gods / Weirwoods predisposition and abilities , so he has all three elements at work already within him to a degree. Ntm being a rare warg (rare in comparison to the vast majority of characters in the universe) is already another wrinkle to this resurrection and JS being such an integral character with special bloodlines have to assume GRRM gives us something unique and different compared to the other resurrections we know about or have seen.
      Unlike the show resurrection i do agree it will likely be a ritual sacrifice of some kind (seemingly a fire one) given GRRM's prevalent magical cost principle that is well established in the books. Mel does seem the most likely candidate so fire wight is the most likely and she will provide the fire portion of this equation but as you say other elements / forces could converge. Maybe being temporarily wighted by the Others gives him the ice properties and Mel does the fire ritual after. Although maybe Bran or the Others are not needed to still facilitate your idea. Lets not forgot where this will be done , at the Wall , which is likely a combo of Ice magic and Weirwood / Greenseer magic already (via the CotF). The location itself could factor in with those other types of magic already at play beyond fire and again another unique aspect of resurrection occurring at one of those rare locations on Planetos with extremely heightened magic. The Wall we know has a Weirwood door (a strange anomaly at that) but there are also likely Weirwood roots and Weirwood wood used in its construction and of course looks to have some heavy Ice magic involved as well. The location itself has the multi-magic conditions already set , that coupled with his bloodlines (Ice & Fire) and warging (old gods ability) all give rise to the possibility you are suggesting with the fire aspect coming from likely a Fire magic ritual sacrifice done by a Fire magic / R'hllor priestess. You might be on to something there.

    • @gagstersps3
      @gagstersps3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@alexb3604 Yeah, it could very well be the wall just being a magical hinge of the world. I also believe that there is weirwood within the wall that gives it magical properties. I've also heard a theory that Mel's ritual will be at the weirwood north of the wall where Jon ans Sam said their vows, which also could include some green magic.

    • @alexb3604
      @alexb3604 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@gagstersps3 possible , although I have some doubts on that one.As far as we know Mel has not successfully done this before (unless i am forgetting something) , we saw the shadow babies but i do not believe any resurrections or heard her speak of any previous ones and she has remarked that she feels more power at / on the Wall. So Mel might feel she has a better chance of success doing this at the Wall given her feeling of heightened magic and the reader knowing how special a magical location the Wall is.
      Ntm she is wary of , does not trust or understand the Weirwoods , she urged Jon to burn them i believe , she already had Stannis burn the godswood at Storm's End and views them as dark evil magic . She might be convinced to go to the Weirwood where they took their vows but the power she feels at the Wall and her distrust for the Weirwoods has me a bit skeptical on that one. The Wall on top of being a magical hinge seems to be a combo of Ice and Weirwood / Old gods magics via the CotF , with a Weirwood door / gate , likely Weirwood wood and roots all within it so perhaps even unknowingly she will draw upon those other magics beyond Fire during the ritual. Plus there are numerous living Weirwoods in the forests north of the Wall , including the one Sam and Jon took their vows , in fairly close proximity to the Wall so maybe the ritual would draw upon them anyway with the Wall acting in sort of a beacon type manner.
      Either way i still think you are on to something , the symbolism , Jon already having elements of Ice , Fire and Old gods in his blood (Targ , Stark , warging ability) , and those magical elements will all be in and around the same area ; be it a convergence of Mel, Bran and the Others or perhaps more simply Mel using fire magic in a fire ritual sacrifice at the Wall which already encompasses Ice and Old gods magic.

    • @gagstersps3
      @gagstersps3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@alexb3604 I definitely think that any weirwood or ice magic that gets included in the ritual will be unintentional from Mel, as she is very much is all in for Rhollor. I think that big magical events like this typically will come together seemingly by coincidence. Parts of it will be Mel trying to revive Jon with fire magic, other parts can be Bran doing some greenseer stuff at the same time. It seems to me that Martin likes to create his characters' fates by weaving together different arcs that not necessarily are contextually obvious, but make more sense on a symbolic level.

Maybe the Walkers felt something special, alongside his brave behavior, like they did afterwards, when they possibly tested... Benjen. But what if instead they were trying to attract...Robb Stark? Maybe they captured Benjen to provoke a response and drive Robb north, like Osha said Robb should do, but he drove his sword into a lion's heart (Tywin), and so it broke. So now... a sacrifice and Azor Ahai shall be "reborn".

    Robin Hobb had a great take on that issue (preserving human consciousness in a wolf) in her Farseer Trilogy (spoiler, but the books have been out for over 20 years) - the main character is saved from prison and potential execution by connecting with his wolf via that universe's version of warging, dying, being buried, and then having the wolf release the consciousness back into the body (can't remember the details of how it was done, it's been a while) - but what I remember, is that afterward he had to spend a substantial amount of time learning back how to be a human, basically.

I think Jon should be resurrected by green magic methods and/or Melisandre magic. IIRC, Varamyr talks about how he pushes Haggon from his eagle. Jon's 'changing' appearance will take away from the fact that the whole possibility of him surviving to adulthood relied upon having the Stark look. Additionaly, as you said, Others looked for the 'Stark appearance' in Waymar, so it doesn't seem like they have some mythical abilities to discern Stark blood other then physical looks. Seems to me Jon having the Stark look is very important, it could be used in many ways (Robb's will, the Others looking for 'Stark' looking guy etc.), but the possibility of him changing that appearance is cool and hey that has happened before with Beric and LSH so who knows.
    P.S. I really wish you guys would dive more in Jon's story. You know, he is not the 'noble hero' boring cliche that he is in the show... Especially if Others are trying to get hold of Jon Snow's Spirit. Jon sees their culture because of this attempt of Others and is able to communicate with them, understand their language.

    Imagine that if Jon is resurrected with Shireen, he goes to Stannis to tell him. In the chamber he breaks down because the guilt of letting a child, Stannis' child, has broken him. Stannis thinks, and says something like "If I kill you, I'd be killing Shireen." Then he legitimizes Jon as his heir. Now Jon has Rob, Stannis, and Targ blood to make him the super king.

    To me I think the answer is in Jon’s arc. So far Jon has had to choose between the watch, his respect for the wildlings, and his dream of becoming Lord of Winterfell and a true Stark. In the last book we see him trying to choose all of the above following the pink letter and Jon gets killed for it. In my opinion, I see Jon having to become a member of another clan beyond the wall that is looked upon as evil: the white walkers. He will find the humanity in them and even though he doesn’t necessarily want it, Jon will have to give up the watch, the wildlings, and the Starks to save humanity. He will become a full fledged White Walker and save the seven kingdoms as a White Walker.

    There's a common question on whether Jon's body will be truly alive or animated but not functional like the other wights we've seen. One way i think this could work is through a Mirri Maz Dur style ritual where the strength of the wolf is compelled to enter the body of the man, like the horse with Drogo. That ritual completely restored his body but left his mind vacant.
    Ghost's body could be sacrificed and it's strength returned to Jon's body, while the spirit of man and wolf are forced into it too. The sacrifice for the spiritual transference would be Shireen, the physical Ghost. Going along with your speculation on how Jon would be against this sacrifice, perhaps Jon will try to prevent Shireen's sacrifice through Ghost and 'die' in the attempt.
    As for what it might be like having Ghost's conscious in Jon's POV, maybe Jon will still see Ghost as sort of a shadow/ghost lol. Perhaps Ghost will whisper truths to Jon like the weirwoods, he has all the symbolism,

      Highland Chicken, they are extinct so we have to go off archaeological evidence which of course is very helpful. I like the idea of Jon and Ghost becoming merged and Ghost being sacrificed in order to save Jon. He might be a lot like ghost at the start of things; silent, terrifying, and able to sense danger (numerous times throughout the series we’ve been shown this Dire-wolf ability). Remember, if Jon is in Ghost for too long he might be more Ghost than Jon if/when he returns. From a story telling perspective this is very much a Frankenstein’s monster/werewolf idea. Jon would need to overcome the monster/wolf within. Eventually as time goes on ghost’s soul will become more amiable and Jon may slowly return to his original self. Wolf Jon’s allegiances could be to The Wall (I think this unlikely as this seems more like a Jon allegiance than a Ghost allegiance), to reconnecting with his family (dire wolves are pack animals and can sense each other over great distances as seen in dire wolf dreams), or to killing the Bolton’s (werewolf hunters, Stark skinners, enemies of the the True North). Man, who put all this tin foil on my head?

    Thought: Thoros raised Beric, but he refused to even try Catelyn because it had been too long. But Beric raised her instead and lost his own resurrected state in the process.
    It would take some hella writing to get there, but it would be pretty cool if Jon’s resurrection comes through Cat abondoning her resurrected state like Beric did for her.

    This combination of resurrection stuff, and I think I heard this from you honestly, will preserve Jon's overall self, I think.
    What's interesting is that GRRM called Beric a 'fire wight', but we also hear that 'fire devours, and ice preserves'. Yet, the ice wights are not preserved, at all, to their former being, but Beric is. Thoughts?

    If Ghost merges with Jon, will he even speak at all, because it is a recurring thing how Ghost makes no sound.
    On another topic, if Jon is Azor Ahay, I think his sword will only burst into flames when he kills Daenerys and not before, either because she has a dragon heart or because Drogon burns him at the spot (I thought he would do that in the show).
