I think they suffer most with choruses. Because Scientist, Set Me Free and Killing Me Good are widely considered weak title tracks because they have weak, mid choruses. However I Can't Stop Me has one of Twice's best choruses and imo is just fantastic all around. Let's just hope they've improved because it's already recorded it seems. And bring us and Twice a really killer chorus.
I like the Killin' Me Good chorus, but it's definitely weaker than the other choruses on ZONE (except the song featuring 24kGoldn, the chorus there is weaker)
I still don't get why people don't like Set Me Free. It's probably the tt I liked the most on first listen. 😭 Both versions were in my top five most played songs of the year. I'm excited! Though I admittedly don't want another retro tt just because they've done so many... Leave that for the b sides if we really need them
I was thinking the exact same thing which is funny because I don't even remember what happened. I just remember everyone was angry at her, including me, and it has not faded lmao
I Can't Stop Me is amazing. That's the song that got me into Twice and still my favourite song from them to this day. I'm surprised to hear many fans despise the producers who did it.
ICSM and the whole Eyes Wide Open album are fantastic. I've been following Twice since Sixteen, the survival show that formed the group, but it wasn't until Eyes Wide Open that I felt like their music stood completely on its own and didn't need a Most Popular Girl Group buff to really make it great. And then they went on to one up EWO with Formula of Love and Between 1&2. Yeah, there are a lot of fans who are just bitter that Twice stopped performing as well on the Korean charts around this time, but I will just never understand why people would rather get a #1 on the charts if it means sacrificing the excellent discography they have built since 2020.
In terms of the album soundcape, I would love to see something similar to fromis_9's Unlock My World. Also, imagine them having a song with orchestral sounds that follows the vampire-esque thing that songs like Last Waltz and Funny Valentine have going on. And lastly, getting a song produced by MonoTree and another by Full8loom, maybe?
Yess to the vampire concept 🙏 the mood film trailer looks kind reminiscent to more & more, so I feel like it’s going to be a more refreshing, early spring vibe
"I would love to see something similar to fromis_9 unlock My world" Why?? Why?? Why would you like for Twice to make something similar to a failed group like fromis_9 ??!? 🤷
@@henrytenden Because Unlock My World was a pop perfection record that was kinda bright but mature at the same time, which would marry very well with Twice's musical and creative direction these past years. What does popularity have to do with that? It was a suggestion I made in accordance to what I think could fit Twice musically. If you don't like fromis_9 or that album, that's okay, we all have different preferences and tastes in what we enjoy in music. I'm kinda curious on what type of music you think Twice could do next. (And also, saying that x group is a failed artist, you need to give more context and examples of why do you think that. It's important in any argument to make people see where you are coming from, even if they don't agree)
@@henrytenden Unlock My World is one of the best kpop albums that came out last year (or ever for me personally). Just because the artists who recorded it aren't "popular" doesn't mean the songs can't be good.
My problem with lindgren songs is the missing character. TTT, Alcohol free and older twice songs sound so twice alike, like they were especially written for them, made for them. Set me free, ICSM and killin me good on the other hand sound so mainstream, so generic, like any other group could have sing these songs, I cannot hear Twice (if that makes sense). Don't get me wrong, I like all of their TT (especially Cry for me), it's just what I think about it.
yes Ive been seeing this!!! im not sure who produced their latest comeback but it really did have that bland pop vibe, while twice has been known to be honestly quite eccentric at times! I appreciate that they want to move beyond cute concepts and grow as a group but they have to figure out a way to do it that makes the songs not sound like they belong on the Walmart playlist😭
Talk That Talk (produced by Collapsedone) spent 30 weeks on Circle digital chart. While Scientist, SMF and KMG combined spent 27 weeks. There's just something about Lindgren's music that doesn't connect with the general public anymore
I agree. I know we love ICSM and Cry For Me but they had something special that was really appealing but also the time they came out was perfect. But Scientist, SMF, and KMG - all songs I do enjoy - did lack that it factor. I can easily see why they didn’t do well
here's a thing that some kpop fans either don't know or understand, lindgreen or other producers don't create sounds and music out of their ass, there's always an inspiration towards it which the companies will decide if they like it enough to keep it or not. the final decision is always on the company, if Twice has been releasing the same music/sound there's a reason about it that the company is trying to achieve.
@@nobo8636its more the company's fault for choosing that "mid" music, if a company keeps choosing said songs the producers will keep making them bc that's what the company wants
lindgren and the hub are two of the least creative/skilled producing teams in kpop 😭 genuinely don’t know how they keep getting called by these big companies
Lyre has some amazing songs tho? Like talk to me, sweet juice, etc… just cuz they made one disliked song (mitm, which I personally enjoy) doesn’t mean they suck
Lingren also produced Cry for Me, let's not forget. Literally my favorite Korean tt!!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾 My prediction is that this comeback will not be retro or at least not completely. Why? Well, many Onces have already pointed out the similarity between this album's (or is it for the pre-lease, I can't remember) concept film with the More & More comeback. With that in mind, I believe that Twice is ready to switch up their sound much in the same way that More & More was a unique and out of the ordinary sound for Twice at the time even after the switch to electro pop with Fancy/Feel Special. Additionally, and this is my personal interpretation, Ready to Be was the first comeback which I assume was planned and produced after Twice's contract renewal. I say RTB instead of Between 1&2, because B1&2 was released in late August while the contract renewal was offically announced July 12th. And even with the little knowledge I have about Twice's comeback schedule, I can definitively deduce that B1&2 was most likely conceptualized, songs recorded, and filming was done before the announcement. Are you with me so far? If this potential timeline is true then this further supports my theory that RTB is the first comeback planned and produced after Twice's renewal, especially since Moonlight Sunrise was released January 2023. My conclusion to this all is that RTB is the final chapter to Twice's retro era (as far as 0T9 is concerned cause idk abt Jihyo w KMG 🤷🏾♀️). I feel that one other interpretation of Set Me Free is Twice saying that they are not only just free to be (ready to be 😉) themselves and breakdown out of the barriers/pressures depicted in the MV, but also that with their new found freedom are now stepping into a new territory sonically. And similarly, I believe the tour also signifies the encapsulation of the retro era. Although technically the tour does extend past this comeback, so I could be wrong about that... Or I could be wrong about everything I just wrote, for which I will come back and edit my comment with a clown face emoji if I Got You or the title track is actually retro. 😅 Edit: Coming back to add to my comment in light of new information. The Dahyun spoiler (iykyk) shows that One Spark was recorded almost 2 years ago, so who knows when any of their comebacks are planned and produced. 🤷🏾♀️🙃🙈 I definitely don't.
I think you’re onto something! If anything, twice themselves may feel the need to transition into something new if they are about to start having korean comebacks only once a year from this point on Perhaps the lead single will have retro vibes, and the title for the album will take us somewhere else
I don't know anything about the Producers, but I do like Set Me Free and the album. I think since TWICE is maturing, their sound is more on the international side than the KPOP-sounding style. I enjoy listening to all the different genres that TWICE puts out. It's hard to please fans, to include K-Netz, especially when a song strays far from the KPOP sound. Whatever the case, I haven't heard or been disappointed yet in what they put out. I do buy their releases and support when I can via voting. Wishing them the best in the future.
What… I can’t stop me is literally iconic and I think the retro sound is a nice way to mature sonically without losing their somewhat bright, poppy image
yes I agree, that's def on the good side of what lidgren has done!!! some of their other tracks however......ICSM was very different stylistically in how the members sang the song, and I think that's what worked!! on some of the other tracks it seems as though they are trying to do that mature style but with the same vocal patterns and styles/tones that were used in their more cute concepts and it just ends up sounding very bland
Their first outings with Twice (ICSM and Cry For Me) were very successful and sounded great, however I can’t deny that a lot of Lindgren’s music can come off as very generic when put into the retro sound or groups that don’t have a super specific musical style (Twice, TXT, BTS). However if you give them a guideline, specific style, or collaborators they can produce some bangers (most recently The Girls by Blackpink).
Idk why the Hub is even being mentioned in these comments. Especially “The Hub’s music can come off as very generic…” have you listened to anything they’ve done for NMIXX? They don’t have a generic song in their catalogue.
@@antoniovin6750 tgats down to personal opinion but i mentioned Icsm and cry for me as some of their best work so when i say the girls is better than their work with twice for the most part, im obvi talking abt scientist and onward.
@@gasboy122 I didn’t word that part out well but I will say the hub are just technically not great producers, they don’t know how to properly do mixx pop to its potential and their songs are often terribly compressed, poorly mixed, and overall messy. And I’m someone who didn’t mind O.O and actually liked their other stuff with Nmixx personally despite the glaring flaws.
As an army who is big fan of twice too I wanted to add this context: lindgren has never actually produced for bts (or txt for that matter) they only have credits for melodies. Which is why we hate them bc they take the credit for doing literally the bare minimum without acknowledging the hard work of pdogg (bts’ actual producer) and the members. As for twice I do think the problem isn’t the producer duo but the repetitive sound (?) I do think it would benefit them to have someone fresh with new ideas to help with their current sound
how are they taking credit away exactly? by being credited for things they did as their job which they were hired for? melody is one of the foundations for a song, if it's so useless why won't pdogg do it then?? if I'm not missing any context it's the stupidest complaint I've ever heard
@@cynthiaowl6802op isn't completelt right, the reason why armys don't like lingren, specifically melanie is because she once posted about writing sweet night but basically didn't give tae credit as well for being a songwriter and she acted like a victim when armys called this out. i think that's what they meant by taking credit away
@@cynthiaowl6802 saying Namjoon is just a translator when he wrote the lyrics in korean and going on multiple interviews acting like she made bts🥴🥴 pls dont act dumb
Set me free isn't my favorite track, it was pretty mid for me until i watched the preform it as their concert opening-- changed my mind completely. I don't want to blame the retro sound for it not doing as well as the other tracks because a big factor to how it charted was they had a press tour in the U.S and didn't have as many promotions in SK, K-onces boycotted streaming, voting etc until the girls came back and then suddenly their numbers were better. The girls had to constantly send reassuring messages to K-onces and it was disappointing to see. For killin' me good, honestly I only like it because Jihyo preforms it well, if it wasn't for her performance quality and me already being a once, not sure if i would be listening to it if anyone else released it.
@@luancosta199I still remember how shock I am tbh but with NCT 127 instead (back in 2019 when they decided to focus on oversea promotion of Superhuman era). Fans who are willing to sabotage their favs in a straightforward way like this will always confuse me.

This just popped up on my recommended and I really like your video style! This was a great video on the discourse! As a seasoned ONCE, I definitely understand the hesitancy but I 100% agree with you that it's way more justified to be upset with the producers because of their behavior than the songs. With that being said, personally I just don't love their style in general of song production. I loved Cry for Me, but imo that was more because of the AMAZING performance both vocally and dance-wise we got from the girls! Either way I'm gonna support Twice, but I can see where people are coming from for sure!
Thank you!! Also I agree - the songs they produce are kind of hit or miss for me as well, but there are some like Cry For Me that I end up enjoying a lot But, I also think that’s the case for most producers haha - they can’t always make songs that people love universally
I don't mind Lindgren's production style but I just can't get past Melanie's racism and how she just keeps doubling down on how she wasn't in the wrong for her posts. Good video.
Can't stop me is my favorite song of 2020. And they also produced Cry for me which is a banger. I will just wait and see what they have to offer this time 😌
thisssssss theyre the ones who get to have the final say and to make the final edits!! idk the full production process but sometimes it seems like the og producer will send a demo in and have a decent idea of how they want it to go, but whoever is in charge at the company takes it a totally different direction in terms of vocals or concept/promotion. sometimes the songs feel so disjointed that I cant help but feel like there were some miscommunications in there somewhere
For me my biggest gripe with Lindgren is Melanie's blatant racism. It's genuinely disgusting the shit she says and I really wish the industry would shun them for it but as always these companies are only interested in profit and don't care about what type of people they enable.
i love set me free 😭 it's one of my favorite tt's from twice and the styling was top tier. i'm not super drawn to the retro sound but i'm not against it so long as there's a good hook. only thing i pray they won't do is say "lindgren" at the beginning again - that's the part of the song that always threw me off with set me free, it's giving "jyp" whisper vibes
I didnt really know which song they produced for who, I only know them from online discussions about unprofessional online behaviour and that they worked with different kpop groups. But I have seen recently so many artists dragged and the behaviour from producers and people they work with used against themselves. Honestly its probably nothing new (given what behaviour and info comes out about people behind the scenes years later) but now with social media its way easier to find some weird comments somebody posted somewhere. Like that the recent selina gomez drama, she started dating benny blanco and people found a interview clip from him allegetly shading her when he worked with junstin on a song and now they are dragging him and her for being with him in her Instagram comments. I am kind of convinced at this point media training could prevent half of these incidents alone
I will leave my trust to the twice Members to decide what music they feel is right for them that they want to perform. Behind the scene's decisions are none of my business and I'm sure all the Ladies of Twice know what is right for them and their Once family, so I place all my Trust with them I would Love to see one whole album that Twice would write and produce all the songs for because Twice is extremely talented
Same! I know Chaeyoung has produced a song in the past, and twice are incredible songwriters - I would love to see a project that is primarily or completely made by the members themselves!
Taste of Love album was written fully by the members except the title track (which was written by JYP himself), but they didn't compose or arrange any of the songs.
Lindgren missed with set me free, but he also dunked with cry for me and I can’t stop me, so I don’t see the hate. Not every composer can be as good as Shim Eunji.
If you're gonna hate them, do it based on their behaviour. Support Twice no matter what. Who cares if they're not doing that well in the Korean charts when they're smashing it globally. They were just on a worldwide tour! Isn't that something we should celebrate or does only their achievements in korea matter?
people's problem with lindgren is 100% set me free... i cant stop me is one of twice's best and most onces agree. That being said i don't think twice should be so focused on performing super well in Korea anymore, they went international a long time ago by now and doing well in korea is great but honestly i cant stop me is a massive song internationally, over 500 million views etc... Melon doesn't have the same impact to measure a groups success anymore.
I can't even say anything cuz most people dislike my fave twice track. More & More is difficult as heck to perform and it blows my mind Everytime I see them do it.
I think the main reason Once hate lindgren is because of Scientist and Killing me good. If you analyse those song well, you will see that none of them had that magic twice touch (I really don’t know how to explain it, the killing part? Or that touch that make the song special and unique as Twice always do) … It was so stale and basic… I can’t stop me is a masterpiece, but we can also see how stale the instrumental is, the beat is the same for all the verses, chorus, post-chorus and even the rap bridge So I kinda get why SOME onces wants different producers because they need new type of sounds that shows Twice’s uniqueness…. Compare how Scientist, Killing Me Good, Set Me free etc is to their other releases like Talk That Talk, The Feels, Alcohol Free and we see those missing things those Once are talking about It’s not about the retro vibes (ex: Cry for me was very good) but more about how they handle it
Can I just say I really appreciate how you showcased your points. Thank you for not just taking a subjective take on this. As someone with some experience in pitching demos for the industry...and I have to word this carefully.. It's as you said 9/10 it's the company picking how the song sounds. Companies will send out leads with a general guide line of what they are looking for as well as reference tracks for what they want it to sound similar to. There is the rare occasion a company will like a song submitted to the point they don't care if it fits the lead or not, but that is very rare. I think your 2nd point is very valid on not wanting to support a production team based off of how they portray themselves outside of their productions. That being said... a lot of favorite K-pop hits were made by some not so great people.. and it's just something we have to put up with unfortunately. Anyways, thank you for the good video and I look forward to watching some of your other videos!
Thank you, and thank you so much for your insights as well! It’s pretty nice to be able to hear a perspective from someone with experience in the producer field - would you mind if I pinned this comment?
Set me free is soooo good I’ve listened to twice’s popular song but it was set me free that made me listen to all their songs. Set me free also made me start taking kpop dance classes bc I was obsessed with it and wanted to learn the choreography.
For those who dont know: Twice global success which was mentioned in the video (2019) was when Twice (had been) working with Korean Producers (which was mainly the Black Eyed Pilseung). I think the fans are kinda disappointed that they love the members so much and want to support them but the songs Twice promotes are no longer KPOP. Now the songs sound like rejected western song from a decade ago. Im a western fan music my self and I heard lots of leaked demo from 2010 and it basically sounds like every westerner produced kpop somgs.
i agree their songs have not been what i used to enjoy from them for years. happy to see their success, but i feel like their new (especially the english) western sounding tts should be bsides or singles, but not main song of an album
yeah I think jype and their producers have been not hitting it right, theyre trying to make twice a more mature group(rightfully) but refuse to change some things production wise that kinda just sound very generic
@@neveratinygoldilocks well I mean Black Eyed Pilseunh can also produce for mature soloist like Chungha (Roller coaster and Gotta Go) not to mention StayC So Bad is very mature sounding. They should just go back to KPOP. NMIXX is full of talented persons but JYPE forced them to promote western sounding musics since their debut, hence their mediocre success.
Aw man, as someone newer to kpop and got my first TWICE album because of hearing songs like Set Me Free and I Can't Stop Me, that bandwagoning effect is making me question how refined my tastes are 😅
Haha sometimes I feel the same way! Honestly, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the songs themselves, just more so the retro style isn’t for everyone nowadays. Especially after the massive retro trend that hit kpop in 2020
I love all of the songs they wrote for Twice... I'm a huge fan of Scientist which most of the general fanbase hated 😂 and that's fine! Taste is subjective 😊
I'm not a ONCE myself, but I understand the struggle because, when you analyze Lindgren's work in Kpop, there's a trend, beyond styling, but in the production style itself: They doesn't create a soundscape with layers to keep discovering things across the (hopefully) multiple listens to a song, but what you see/listen is what you get, and that could work for the immediate charts, but not for making an impact. More than "Set Me Free", listen to "Killing Me Good" by Jihyo, another TT with Lindgren production: don't you think it sounds like Jihyo is restrained and not in the fullest of her vocal ability? don't you think the song relays a little too much in the bass line to keep it grooving (this happens too in Set Me Free? So yeah, there's a musical explanation to why Lindgern production sounds lackluster, and in a universe where you have Twice and Twice members, where the extravagance and playful sounds are something usual, to have this almost soulless production style is something of a missed opportunity.
u worded this so perfectly😭😭i dont think the songs are horrible but theyre just not interesting at all its just very boring music. even with songs that id call "bad" i can usually find some crazy things in the production that i can acknowledge took time and effort, but these songs are just so plain, like nothing to even go back and listen to
YESSSSSS THIS IS IT!!! ive been saying that something is just different, like theyre throwing away some elements of old twice and keeping others and that it just isn't meshing, but I think this is prob the biggest contributor!! the production is so so simple at times, so things that used to stand out in twice's older and more complex-production tracks(such as the iconic long high notes, etc) now just sound like any 2010s girl group song!! they have these great talented members of the group(quite a few of whom have really unique vocal tones and great singing ability) yet they really don't take advantage of that and almost just shove them into the "this is the way girl group members sing and these are the ranges of notes they can sing in" etc and its just weirddd
100% agree with your take. Twice are in a position to choose these songs, and they probably chose based on which they liked and which they thought would do the best sales-wise. Some of the lindgren produced tracks were great in my opinion. I really liked Jihyo's Killin me good. I thought it was miles ahead of Nayeon's PoP that's for sure.
with killin me good, jihyo had tons of creative control over choosing and planning out her album and i genuinely thought it was an amazing solo, arguably in my opinion better than pop although i know thats controversial. what makes me sad is that it's one of the best eps ever and had poor commerical success. all the songs are fantastic and so jihyo. they showcase her in such a great way yet it performed poorly and it honestly devastates me bcs jihyo put her soul in that truly :/ zone honestly deserved sm better. i know knetz are impossible to please and are very fickle but gosh does it make me sad ngl.. also i just think the retro style and trend is just so out. to be frank, it was out by 2021 and it just doesnt represent twice when i think post 2018-19. i want twice to progress and if they're going to do retro, they need to expand further. sonically i'd rather have twice release music with more cohesion like zone or tol, but still maintain a sound that fits THEM. i feel like theyre in an awkward spot and i just hope this cb promises a better future. i also hope conceptually it stays solid. moonlight sunrise was quite great and i loved the visuals of it, but smf made no sense. from the teasers so far, everything seems promising but so did smf so im hesitant. with smf, they made it seem like it was a song in jail with the cuff choreo at the fanmeet and the outside of a prison(??) almost. then there was the makeup removal teaser which couldve been so amazing and set a bar but the mv comes and it's just like. completely random. the outfits are just trendy "y2k" fits, they're dancing on a planet, they're wearing rlly fancy dressess backstage one minute, they're watching the mv, they're jumping, etc. it felt so uncorrelated and unlike twice. i know this rant doesnt add much to the discussion but i just hope things are more solid and truly twice this time. theyre in a point of their career where they can pretty much do anything but i want them to play it safe while also making smart descisions
I personally loved Set Me Free and ICSM is like my fave Twice tt to date. That being said tho, I am that weirdo that prefers the more mature side of Twice. I like some of their early stuff but there is few songs I absolutely cannot stand (and noone better accuse me of hating cute concepts because I thrive with them, I just need to enjoy the song). It was always my problem because I would like every other Twice release before but since Fancy they constantly release bangers and it makes me happy that I can love their songs so much.
I really don’t care much for producers, but if they going to have Twice do another retro song, then that isn’t a good idea. I kinda wanna see Twice do something like Fromis_9 menow or something similar
@@jxstadri I normally try to avoid listening to teasers because JYP tends to spoil too much of the song for my liking 😭 but I’ll be happy with whatever sound it is because it’s twice in the end
4:50 I remember this. Armys were already pissed that BTS wasn't being taken seriously as artist by the American media but then here she goes describing Joon as a "translator" and not one of the lyricist on the song 🙃. She had multiple articles painting her as "the person behind BTS success " and not one interview or article was made to look into the members artistic process. We do NOT fw her at all.
I loved Set me free, I can't stop me is a bop I like to go back any time and I thought other people feel the same... if a huge part of the hate that goes to the producers is "it didn't do that well in korean chart" then it's pretty stupid...
Watching Lyre Music Group’s channel, they reacted to Itzy’s latest comeback and they said the company gave Lyre and other producers a prompt to the types of music they wanted. Attacking the producers isn’t fair.
I can’t stop me and cry for me are my two favourite twice tracks. But my issue is just how similar twices releases sound nowadays. The past year of twice has completely blended together for me. INCLUDING jihyo’s solo debut which is a shame because the other songs on her album were fantastic. And I really disliked how cookie cutter moonlight sunrise was. I like it when twice carves out their own sound rather than pandering to the most recent trends. Even with one spark I didn’t mind it but I want non repetitive main choruses. Let the refrain be whatever idc but give me something please
I am a ONCE and I understand ONCEs. The thing is, Lindgren made Cry For Me, one of my fave TWICE songs ever, however I feel like Ryan Tedder is more of “the core”. I Can’t Stop Me is also a great work of Lindgren. However, I don’t think they have really nailed other songs. Most of their recent songs for me do not have a wow and replay factor (Scientist literally surpassed Signal as my least replayed TWICE comeback, and then Set Me Free again surpassed Scientist, which I dropped after 3-4 days, THE FIRST TIME EVER IN TWICE HISTORY OF TITLES). I do like Jihyo’s Killin’ Me Good, but it does not seem like it did very well charting wise. I want producers like BEP (Fancy, Likey, TT, Cheer Up, Like Ooh-Ahh), David Amber (Heart Shaker and Yes Or Yes), Ryan Tedder (Cry For Me), Collapsedone (The Feels, Talk That Talk) and even JYP (Signal, What Is Love, Feel Special, Alcohol-Free). I feel like they produce very quality songs that are catchy and replayable. Lindgren is good for certain songs, but I believe that it is now time that TWICE need someone new. Or a good old producer.
Disclaimer: This might be a long a comment (lol). Firstly, great video as always, Choujimi! I really appreciate your insights on this subject matter. For me, personally, although I don't think I'm a fan of the Lindgren producers as people due to what I know of them and their internet history; I do think it's unfair to hate on them for the music the companies choose to use from them (no rhyme intended), as you said. I personally separate the producers from their production. For me, a TWICE track is a TWICE track and if I love it, I love it. I love their B-Side "Icon", in my opinion, it's great. But I don't excuse the producers' abhorrent actions online. For me, I think it's separating the production from those who produced it and still finding enjoyment, really above all finding enjoyment in what TWICE is releasing next. I hope that makes sense? Lol. Also, I could've sworn it said January 2nd on the Instagram post (lol). Was I the only one? My ONCE mind was playing tricks on me. Once again, great video, and this comment is too long. So, yea, stay safe and keep up the great work, Choujimi! :D
I don’t mind long comments at all, I appreciate it haha! Also, I agree! There’s nothing we as fans can really do about this besides looking forward to the group’s releases, so in the end, it’s probably best to just focus on the music
Set Me Free is my favorite Twice TT after Feel Special and I love every single song they've produced for Twice. People simply can't move on from Twice's cute concept era and they're still pressed.
@@choujimi Yeah, I could see why people would call it basic if you compared to some of Twice's other releases, but I really liked the vibe of it when it came out. It's one of those songs to me no matter how much I listen to it, it never gets old. It's like a breath of fresh air whenever I hear it.
Wait people don’t like scientist, I can’t stop me, and killing me good? That’s actually so crazy because scientist is one of my favorite songs and I can’t stop me and killing me good are really good songs!
I love Scientist too, but it's heavily hated by the fanbase. I had no idea about I Can't Stop Me or Set Me Free though, those songs are fucking excellent.
I'm confused because I thought I can't stop me was one of the most loved song from their discography. Set me free is in my top 10 and Scientist did bring a little bit the bubblegum they had before. There's nothing to complain about these tracks 🤔. They produced "Cry for me" too, which was pretty successful and loved. I really think Onces make a big deal for nothing here.
Ohhhh I needed this, cause when I’m just casually listening to a song for example “I Want That” by (G)I-DLE or “SCIENTIST” and then at the start the “li-li-lindgren” I’m like “whyyyyy? what is this? I thought this only was in some Twice Songs? I wanna know what that is..because it is a little mystery to me”
It is called a producer tag i believe? Lindgren isnt the only one that do this, idk exactly the name, but in nmixx tank or chaeyeon’s hush rush the INCOMIIINGGG is also a producer tag! Idk why they do that though
As someone who listens to quite a bit of jpop, as soon as I heard the “li-li-lindgren” in more than one song I knew it was a producer tag. A bunch of famous jpop/vocaloid producers have one that they put close to the intro of a song they do
I can admit that all of the songs that Lindgren has produced kids sound the same beat and sample vibe-wise. I’d say the most unique sounding song they’ve produced is I CANT STOP ME which is a great song
imagine disliking songs just because of charts... kpop stans have gone crazy over numbers, now they're basing their opinions on a song on how good or bad it performed in the charts 💀
I think most people really like those songs out of the lindgren tracks 😭 it’s just the other less-liked songs that give CFM and ICSM a bad name by association
Lindgren produced some of my fave kpop songs, but idk much about music producing and stuff all ik is if the song sounds good to me ill like it. But ig i like Lindgren music lol
personally, i feel, for the most part, that most if not all producers who work with kpop have both good and bad songs. Even producers people say they hate like the hub and the lindgren couple. That's just how it is when you're in any creative industry. No one puts out masterpiece songs that everyone universally loves and that's okay. Even the producers I tend to like in kpop (one example being ollounder/leez pairing) i can name some songs that i feel they could have done better/ aren't to my taste. And I think taste is a big part of this too because I personally like a good amount of the songs the lindgren pair have done for twice. To each their own! On another note, while I don't condone the things they, especially Melanie, have said, the way certain people focus on them and not other producers kinda makes this whole thing seem silly to me. For example, Ryan Jhun (which mind you i do like a good amount of the songs he makes!) had his own controversary with what he said online esp toward female idols, yet for the most part (the only time i saw it was addressed was when bugaboo was active and people wanted something to say about them/ryan), people just.... ignore/dismiss it just because he makes good songs. (even though he once again has songs that i feel are bad lol) it really just comes down to if a producer makes good songs, then we can look the other way. meanwhile, if they make "bad" songs, then we can focus more on their crimes. hold them accountable and not like them, go right ahead, but i'm going to wonder if you apply those things to other producers in the industry. Producers are just like anyone else. They make good and bad art and might not be the best of people. You can criticize the songs (heck, i encourage it, it allows these producers to make better work!), but if you just pan a producer based on one or two songs, they really aren't going to get better lol anyways, im not usually a commenter but I just had a personal thought to share with this one, since i also saw something similar happen recently when the nmixx tracklist was submitted for review and the hub was on it and fans were saying similar things too (personally I am excited considering the title is partly done by strong dragon who makes really good songs for verivery, who are one of my ults! and i really liked sonar so im not too worried about the hub lol), love your videos btw
I definitely agree! We also don’t know how constricting kpop companies can be when asking producers to make songs in a very specific style - it may lead producers to creating songs that are outside of the musical space their comfortable in, which leads them to making even more divisive songs for kpop fans It’s also a good point to stay consistent with criticism of the producers as public figures even when they’re making songs that people like. You’re right that most of these discussions start to rise up *only* when producers start making songs that people don’t like 😭
Yes to all of these points! From what I heard, what people dislike about the hub as producers is that they tend to have badly mixed tracks, and after listening to both O.O and Dice, I can understand why, though I don't follow any groups that they majorly produced ir listened to the majority of the songs they produced, so I can't talk about them in depth the same way I could about 3Racha or Leez/ollounder (I do like Girls by aespa though) At the end, like you said , as a lot of things related to art, liking or disliking a producer is largely subjective and comes down to your personal taste. Most of the time I don't even know who produced a track, only the artist that released it
@@albarr953 no i totally get the criticism as i did not get o.o at all until much recently! they have been working with verivery for some time (through strong dragon i believe since they are now the hub too) and i really like their work there hence why i tend to not hate them like others might. (although i will still give them lashes for songs like ven para........ but that had much more going on than just mixing for that one because the lyrics were messy and only the 2nd verse and bridge were good) also yes exactly! if its a more well known producer/ they made a song i really love then i might know them offhand when i see them credited on a tracklist, but for the most part, i'm the same way. and on the other hand, even if i do recognize a producer and have sound references in mind, kpop is very diverse genre wise, i tend to not put too much stock in it because companies want different things/genres and producers might do something different also hi fellow leez/ollounder enthusiast!
I love the retro feel of their more recent songs, I think it fits their concept way better than the older girl crush stuff they did early on. Don't get me wrong I still like their early tracks, but when they started getting into 80s synth-pop I listened to way more TWICE. O+T=
so what im taking from this video is my fave twice songs are songs the fandom hates 🤣😭 im a casual fan of twice so idk what is going on in the fandom lol but i lovedd i cant stop me and cry for me. looking forward to the next comeback!
Now that I'm on this new account, TH-cam is feeding me tons of videos I already saw months ago because it thinks I just subscribed a couple days ago. Just dropping by to marvel once more at how insanely this video blew up. There is absolutely no way to predict what videos are going to go viral. 😂
I know 😭 the absolute last video I was expecting to ever do well considering it was kind of niche, but it unleashed a fandom-wide problem with these producers I guess lol
Since there is no Lindgren on this album I think it's safe to say that JYPE finally got the message that retro is not the way to go anymore. It was cute in 2020, it isn't anymore in 2024. I btw don't associate Lindgren with their declining chart success in SK, but they produced some of my least liked songs in Twice's discography, so hearing that they're all produced by the same producers makes sense.
if the twice songs produced by lindgren doing poorly on the korean music charts is not a coincidence, it's probably the boycotting of the song because it is made by lindgren the reason why it's not doing well..
I’ve never really cared that much about which producers produce which songs for the groups I listen to, and I think it’s a little unfair to write off a comeback/hate it before release because of a producer you don’t like. Personally I enjoyed SMF more than some of even their better charting recent comebacks like alcohol free, and whether or not a song charts well to me personally is irrelevant. It’s the music I’m after and the performances. Listing the lindgren produced and non-lindgren produced comebacks recently was really interesting though, and something I’d never have noticed. Was interesting to see how the lindgren ones (perhaps besides ICSM) were ALL less popular and less well received than basically all the non-lindgren ones. Hardly seems like a coincidence to me, especially given that comebacks have flip flopped between the two producers, and the popularity has changed in the same way. At the end of the day though as you said it isn’t their fault given that it’s the company and members that have to be happy with and approve the songs, so if they’re happy with the direction they’re going, then I will be too.
It's wild that they originally worked with bts, were so hated by fans that the company stopped using them for bts songs, and then got their claws into twice where they were again incredibly hated by fans
They never really did much for bts anyways they only wrote very small parts of some of the melodies like the "oh my my my oh my my my" that still had to be reworked by bts and rheir inhouse team but acted as if they produced whole songs and wrote the lyrics lol also from what i remember tbey didn't work on many bts songs, it all started with bwl in 2019 (if I'm not misremembering) and lastly, as of now, worked with them in 2021
I personally like their production style, but I’m really apprehensive against Melanie. As an ARMY, I can’t just forget about the whole discourse regarding Sweet Night, Taehyung and her writing credits. I can’t stand her since 😵💫
Cool vid. I would suggest adding background instrumentals at a low volume . Don't know if you've have done so in past vids but its just something I thought would make your videos better.👍👍
I just realized that the li-li-lindgren is the signature for a literal producer named lindgren and I know everyone probably already knew this but that blew my mind a bit lol
i love love LOVE the songs Lindgren apparently has produced for twice. However, learning about their history troubles me. Why does kpop allow these people to continue producing for them when they can easily find better talent somewhere else???

I think they suffer most with choruses. Because Scientist, Set Me Free and Killing Me Good are widely considered weak title tracks because they have weak, mid choruses. However I Can't Stop Me has one of Twice's best choruses and imo is just fantastic all around. Let's just hope they've improved because it's already recorded it seems. And bring us and Twice a really killer chorus.
I like the Killin' Me Good chorus, but it's definitely weaker than the other choruses on ZONE (except the song featuring 24kGoldn, the chorus there is weaker)

Also me, I too became a once since ICSM Era and I love Eyes Wide Album soo much ever in Kpop!!! ❤❤❤
I've literally never seen someone not like I Can't Stop Me. It's even loved a lot by non-Onces
"I would love to see something similar to fromis_9 unlock My world"
Why??
SO TRUE!!! THEY SHOULD HONESTLY PLAGARIZE THE WHOLE ALBUM
Very well said! that's how I think about them too, I thought every song they produced for Twice was missing the "Twice element" as well.
yes Ive been seeing this!!! im not sure who produced their latest comeback but it really did have that bland pop vibe, while twice has been known to be honestly quite eccentric at times!
There's just something about Lindgren's music that doesn't connect with the general public anymore
also POP did better than any lindgren track
I agree. I know we love ICSM and Cry For Me but they had something special that was really appealing but also the time they came out was perfect. But Scientist, SMF, and KMG - all songs I do enjoy - did lack that it factor. I can easily see why they didn’t do well
@@mlskippop really gave us that classic Twice sound we’ve been missing for years now tbh

here's a thing that some kpop fans either don't know or understand, lindgreen or other producers don't create sounds and music out of their ass, there's always an inspiration towards it which the companies will decide if they like it enough to keep it or not. the final decision is always on the company, if Twice has been releasing the same music/sound there's a reason about it that the company is trying to achieve.
Thank you for introducing real world realities to the conversation!
The company clearly doesn’t know what their audience wants
@nobo8636 and how is that the producer's fault?
@@popcornbutterr did I say it’s the producers fault? Now that you have brought it up, the producers fault is making mid music

Lingren also produced Cry for Me, let's not forget. Literally my favorite Korean tt!!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾
My prediction is that this comeback will not be retro or at least not completely.
😅
Edit: Coming back to add to my comment in light of new information. The Dahyun spoiler (iykyk) shows that One Spark was recorded almost 2 years ago, so who knows when any of their comebacks are planned and produced. 🤷🏾♀️🙃🙈 I definitely don't.
I think you’re onto something! If anything, twice themselves may feel the need to transition into something new if they are about to start having korean comebacks only once a year from this point on
Perhaps the lead single will have retro vibes, and the title for the album will take us somewhere else
Damn
The chorus is mid, only the verses hit.

I really don't think the girls is a banger compared to icsm

When you hear “Li-li-lindgren” you know a good song is coming. And it sounds really sexy.

I don't want to blame the retro sound for it not doing as well as the other tracks because a big factor to how it charted was they had a press tour in the U.S and didn't have as many promotions in SK, K-onces boycotted streaming, voting etc until the girls came back and then suddenly their numbers were better.

I lovve more & more it was so misunderstood 😭
More & More is iconic AF thank you LOL
I kinda blame that era for Jeongyeon's condition... The album is really great though, gotta listen to it again someday
set me free became my favourite twice song on the first listen. i had no idea people didn’t like it:(
they produced Helicopter by CLC, it's super art
I am a huger sucker for retro sounds so that was what mainly drew me into TWICE, but I get that it's not as marketeable as other sounds
I think the main reason Once hate lindgren is because of Scientist and Killing me good. If you analyse those song well, you will see that none of them had that magic twice touch (I really don’t know how to explain it, the killing part? Or that touch that make the song special and unique as Twice always do) … It was so stale and basic…
I can’t stop me is a masterpiece, but we can also see how stale the instrumental is, the beat is the same for all the verses, chorus, post-chorus and even the rap bridge
So I kinda get why SOME onces wants different producers because they need new type of sounds that shows Twice’s uniqueness….
Compare how Scientist, Killing Me Good, Set Me free etc is to their other releases like Talk That Talk, The Feels, Alcohol Free and we see those missing things those Once are talking about
It’s not about the retro vibes (ex: Cry for me was very good) but more about how they handle it
Can I just say I really appreciate how you showcased your points.
I love Set Me Free and every other Lindgren kpop production, The Girls I love
I really don’t care much for producers, but if they going to have Twice do another retro song, then that isn’t a good idea. I kinda wanna see Twice do something like Fromis_9 menow or something similar
Yess twice doing a song like menow would be so great!
But honestly, from the snippet we got for I Got You it doesn‘t really sound retro at all
@@jxstadri I normally try to avoid listening to teasers because JYP tends to spoil too much of the song for my liking 😭 but I’ll be happy with whatever sound it is because it’s twice in the end
@@choujimi Yea I noticed that but I just had to listen to it, all I can say it‘s got beautiful vocals on it!
What? Are Onces really thinking I Can't Stop Me and Cry For Me are bad songs? That's wild😅, they might bothbe in my top 5 Twice songs ever.
Same! I really like those songs too 😭
I think people are more appreciative of ICSM and Cry for Me, but so many people dislike Set Me Free 😭
Also ICON, one of the hard hitting b-side track from Twice
5:11 goddamn i just looked at her old tweets and they're so much worse than what i was anticipating 😭
I love their recent TTs just as much as old ones, Lindgren or not. But scientist.☠️ Scientist is something i will never be able to forgive.
Attacking the producers isn’t fair.
lindgren produced songs are a hit or miss.. but mainly misses lol.
BEP and David Amber are so classic kpop... I miss them
i just make the link beetween all those mysterious "lindgreen" that i can hear on some kpop song oh so it's them...
I really liked Scientist. That's one of my favorite newer tt of Twice's.
Me too! I know a lot of people complained that it was a little too basic, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing by any means 😭
@@choujimi Yeah, I could see why people would call it basic if you compared to some of Twice's other releases, but I really liked the vibe of it when it came out. It's one of those songs to me no matter how much I listen to it, it never gets old. It's like a breath of fresh air whenever I hear it.
I swear they say every new title track is their worst title track ever since Scientist….
Korean title track***
I CAN'T STOP ME and CRY FOR ME is one of my fav Lindgren work ❤
the only song that i didn’t like all that much was the scientist but i love the other songs they produced i had no idea they didn’t perform very well
Wait people don’t like scientist, I can’t stop me, and killing me good? That’s actually so crazy because scientist is one of my favorite songs and I can’t stop me and killing me good are really good songs!
Same...
I respect some onces not liking those songs, but a lot of them make those songs to be the WORST out of all... (they're not THAT bad 😭)
@OnceUBellieve Agreed! 🥲😭
Honestly, though, I also thought that I Can't Stop Me was loved by the fanbase...
@@BetaKima oh..thank youuu
@@BetaKima The INCOMING producer tag is by Dem Jointz, most notable for his SM songs
As someone who listens to quite a bit of jpop, as soon as I heard the “li-li-lindgren” in more than one song I knew it was a producer tag. A bunch of famous jpop/vocaloid producers have one that they put close to the intro of a song they do
@@hyper123100 right! Even though im not very familiar with sm groups besides rv and aespa, I’ve heard them in GOT step back
I can admit that all of the songs that Lindgren has produced kids sound the same beat and sample vibe-wise. I’d say the most unique sounding song they’ve produced is I CANT STOP ME which is a great song
I really had no idea people didnt like set me free
imagine disliking songs just because of charts... kpop stans have gone crazy over numbers, now they're basing their opinions on a song on how good or bad it performed in the charts 💀
yall my all time favs of twice are literally cry for me and i cant stop me i do not understand 😭
I feel the same way haha 😭 I really liked the girls song they did for blackpink, and ICSM as well
@@choujimi loll, i also love the songs they made for TXT
Melanie I think also made a lot of weird ass tweets taking full credit for a song, where 90% of the members participated in
WHO TF SAID I HATE LINDGREN TWICE'S SONGS?! NO I DO NOT?? THEY ARE BOPS WTF
personally, i feel, for the most part, that most if not all producers who work with kpop have both good and bad songs.
You can criticize the songs (heck, i encourage it, it allows these producers to make better work!), but if you just pan a producer based on one or two songs, they really aren't going to get better lol
anyways, im not usually a commenter but I just had a personal thought to share with this one, since i also saw something similar happen recently when the nmixx tracklist was submitted for review and the hub was on it and fans were saying similar things too (personally I am excited considering the title is partly done by strong dragon who makes really good songs for verivery, who are one of my ults! and i really liked sonar so im not too worried about the hub lol), love your videos btw
I definitely agree! We also don’t know how constricting kpop companies can be when asking producers to make songs in a very specific style - it may lead producers to creating songs that are outside of the musical space their comfortable in, which leads them to making even more divisive songs for kpop fans
It’s also a good point to stay consistent with criticism of the producers as public figures even when they’re making songs that people like. You’re right that most of these discussions start to rise up *only* when producers start making songs that people don’t like 😭
Yes to all of these points!
From what I heard, what people dislike about the hub as producers is that they tend to have badly mixed tracks, and after listening to both O.O and Dice, I can understand why, though I don't follow any groups that they majorly produced ir listened to the majority of the songs they produced, so I can't talk about them in depth the same way I could about 3Racha or Leez/ollounder (I do like Girls by aespa though)
At the end, like you said , as a lot of things related to art, liking or disliking a producer is largely subjective and comes down to your personal taste.
(although i will still give them lashes for songs like ven para........ but that had much more going on than just mixing for that one because the lyrics were messy and only the 2nd verse and bridge were good)
also yes exactly! if its a more well known producer/ they made a song i really love then i might know them offhand when i see them credited on a tracklist, but for the most part, i'm the same way. and on the other hand, even if i do recognize a producer and have sound references in mind, kpop is very diverse genre wise, i tend to not put too much stock in it because companies want different things/genres and producers might do something different
also hi fellow leez/ollounder enthusiast!
In most cases, Kpop idols don't get to choose the title tracks, the label does.
I will love to hear a twice song produced by someone like Dem Jointz, but sadly, that's not happening anytime soon
Thank you for including closed captions :))
if they make anything like ICSM or CFM it's going to be a hit. they also make really good b-sides most of the time. so i'm pretty excited.
They never really did much for bts anyways they only wrote very small parts of some of the melodies like the "oh my my my oh my my my" that still had to be reworked by bts and rheir inhouse team but acted as if they produced whole songs and wrote the lyrics lol
also from what i remember tbey didn't work on many bts songs, it all started with bwl in 2019 (if I'm not misremembering) and lastly, as of now, worked with them in 2021
I personally like their production style, but I’m really apprehensive against Melanie. As an ARMY, I can’t just forget about the whole discourse regarding Sweet Night, Taehyung and her writing credits. I can’t stand her since 😵💫
i personally love all of their song that their have made because it their songs are such upbeat and a fast tempo
Cool vid. I would suggest adding background instrumentals at a low volume . Don't know if you've have done so in past vids but its just something I thought would make your videos better.👍👍
I just realized that the li-li-lindgren
is the signature for a literal producer named lindgren and I know everyone probably already knew this but that blew my mind a bit lol
WHAT???? SET ME FREE IT'S SO FCKIN GOOD
