So many great books on this list. Shelly, I’m glad you made this video and I hope you will tackle even older best picture book lists. Sydney Smith’s Small in the City is my hands down favourite here. His moody ink and watercolour matches the somber tone of the story and the pacing is just perfect. It’s a picture book for humans of any age.
Lindy, that's a bit of a conundrum because my library doesn't have some of the oldest books though I could try and go about the route of an interlibrary loan. Small in the City does have a cohesion that's just lovely.
Picture books are incredible. Love to see the illustrations and the way they can capture kids and adults alike. The Boring Book is definitely interesting. 😊💙
Hey Shelly, thanks for the shout out and great to see you checking out other years. Unfortunately, I’m having trouble watching the video, it keeps freezing and buffering. It doesn’t happen on other videos of yours or others and I’ve tried multiple times. I’ll check back later to see if it will work for me.
Yay! It worked and was wonderful! The nice thing about this is it helps put the Caldecott Medal into an international perspective in regards to what others are doing around the world. If you ever get the chance, each year in March or April the International Children’s Book Fair is held in Bologna, Italy. There’s a huge juried exhibition of children’s book illustration of original artwork. Art and exhibitions are huge throughout the whole fair as that’s what transcends language and everyone is there selling the international rights for publication. Some of the big children’s book awards are also announced there. Closer to home in NYC, each fall The Society of Illustrators holds an exhibition of juried art by US produced children’s book illustrators. It called The Original Art, or OA, and this year’s exhibit opens on October 26. They also have copies of all the books from which the art is drawn from. I would go there and sit for hours reading and building my collection development list for picture books.
Wonderful video, Shelly! Your analysis of the books is always so fascinating - thank you so much for sharing them. I really loved Small in the City. Your top three look excellent and I’ll have to seek them out. Is the original list ranked? If so, how does it compare to yours?
The original list isn’t ranked. I think it’s about proving a platform to celebrate a bunch of different and beautiful picture books. ☺️ Small in the City is a great one!
Ohhh neon style! I like that one a lot too. Though the Canadian is inherently cool 😇 Ohh boring book #1, didn’t see that coming either. The top two seem very cute.
