  • IFR vs VFR comparison. What are these Flight Rules and Why is it important to understand when to use VFR and when IFR.
There are two main categories that set up the rules of airplanes operations:
Visual Flight Rules (VFR): To be followed when flying Visually,
Instrument Flight Rules (IFR): To be followed when flying looking at the instruments only.
The IFR regulations are in place to make sure that an airplane can be safely operated when the Pilot cannot maintain visual contact with the surrounding obstacles.
Since the inception of these rules, the safety of Flight Operations has improved drastically.
Flying IFR, without the right instruments, when there is no visibility is practically impossible.
A Pilot that is inside a cloud must trust 100% of the instruments, no matter what.
When into a cloud, the Pilot's senses are distorted.
    A classic example is…
The Pilot thinks and feels he is going straight but the instrument tells him that the Airplane is turning.
I had this feeling many times during my IFR training. I can tell you was not easy to go against my senses.
However, with practice and experience, it becomes quite manageable.
That’s why in order to be IFR compliant the Aircraft and the Pilot need to be qualified.
Almost all the Commercial Air Transport Operations are conducted in IFR. This is so because IFR is a more precise and predictable Flight Operation.
VFR flights are made mostly by Private Pilots or Commercial Pilots involved in specific operations such as Skydiving, Air Photography, etc.
The Instrument Flight Rules flights follow very specific routes for departure, en route, and arrival.
So, it is a lot easier, for the Air Traffic Controller, to manage an efficient flow of traffic.
The VFR (Visual Flight Rules) flights have to overfly specific waypoints called ''gates'' when leaving or entering the airspace.
However the VFR pilots decide how to go to the ''gate'', there is no specific route for them.
IFR flights are allowed under IMC and VMC.
VFR flights are only allowed under VMC.
What are these VMC and IMC?
IMC and VMC are specific meteorological conditions that define if the pilot can fly VFR or has to fly IFR.
These Meteorological conditions are based on the Visibility and separation of the Aeroplane from the cloud.
This means that when IMC, Instrument Meteorological Conditions, are present the pilots are only allowed to fly IFR.
In IMC the Visibility and the Clouds base are such, that is not safe to fly using the outside visual references.
