You did a master job with those pots Stuart. I once saw an amp tech, once sprayed deoxit, use the side of the hand and sweep across all the pot shafts turning them all at once. Saves a little time turning instead of turning them one at a time. Just a little trick.
@@stuartukguitarampguy5830 , and if you see those stock marshall tubes in the video, you can notice that they have stapeled plates, like the new JJEL34II, and not solder ones like the regular JJEL34.
I'm relatively certain that those are Shuguang EL34's. Contrary to my usual beliefs, I think they are awesome EL34's for Marshall amps because they distort kind of early, have a bite to them, and good dynamic range. One of the only Chinese made power tubes I would recommend.
Yes I'm sure you're right. Isn;t that the factory that burned down 2 years ago and they still haven;t gotten back into production? Serious shortage of valves worldwide right now.
High C!oud Cnect, I had some glass bottle Shuguang 6L6's that came in an '53 Gibson GA75 I bought. Wow they did sound good! But the base loosened on one. After some trail and error I found a Sylvania that matched the remaining one but, I'd like to find another pair of glass bottle Shugaungs.
The JJ E34L works fine in my 100W Plexi Reissue. I’ve never tried the regular EL34 JJ‘s, i have no experience with that. The new Marshall Valves could be a Tung Sol product.
Hi you dont need to use your bias meter with an amp that has 1ohm (or a resistor to ground) to monitor the current. It can false the reading. In the 2000’ marshall bought tubes from svetlana (now i think they are out of business). For the new tubes i dont know. Where do you buy your tubes ? Thanks
Hi Jean-Pierre. You are not correct when you say the bias meter will give a flase reading if there is a 1 ohm cathode resistor in place. It won't. It will read correcetly. I always just use the bias meter as it's easier than messing around trying to find the resistor (if fitted, which is VERY rare) and clipping on with a voltmeter etc. I get my valves from ampvalves.co.uk but they mainly sell JJ. If I want a different brand I usually use Watford valves. All the best.
Hi there. A guy at work is offering me a JCM900 combo which he had just had repaired when a power tube blew along with a couple of the fuses. Are EL34s interchangeable with 5881 tubes as my local music store sold me them possibly by mistake?
Question is, if one leaves the amp on standby for long periods of time, considering the voltage was pretty high when you turned the amp on, would that cause the valves to break?
Hi there are two issues here. If you leave an amp on for a long period (e.g. several days there's definitely a risk of damage. But its nothing to do with the voltage as you menioned. All the best
It's funny, but a while ago I put a JJ ecc823 on my DSL and after a few days it cut in the same way and in the same place as those el34, I think it's a matter of internal dilation
100 watt Marshall's sometimes don't like JJ due to high voltage. But blown HT plus bad valves usually means Bias problem or just dead valves in my experience.
Nah, I'm not buying that. Actually only after watching the video again did I see MY label on the valve replacements. SO I did it last time! I'm suspicious of this one, not totally sure what's gone on here.
@@stuartukguitarampguy5830 who knows.. It's all good now though. Sometimes people say something to hide the fact that they broke it themselves, I've seen that many times as well. Maybe it was run hot and put away somewhere cold and the valves shattered due to temparature shock? Anyway.. I like watching these videos, it makes me happy to see that there are more people out there wanting to fix things rather that throw it away for another one.
I have this amp but it was in storage for over 10 years. It switches on but after a while the sound starts spluttering so I think the valves have gone but I want to sell it and can't decide on selling the amp as is for cheaper or getting the valves changed and then selling. It is otherwise in good condition. Any advice?
Hi Peter. The problem is, it may not be the valves and so you will have wasted a lot of money for no return. Also valves are higely expensive right now. They do not deteriorate in storage, so my view is that if it worked ok 10 years ago, it won;t be the valves. Do you have an amp tech near you?
@@stuartukguitarampguy5830 ah thank you for the advice and yes it worked fine playing gigs before it went into storage, it was bought maybe 20 years ago and used on and off for 10 years, then went into storage, when I got it from the loft, it was dusty but in good condition, it powers on fine and the guitar sounds okay through it for a while but after warming up and playing for a couple of minutes, then the sounds starts spluttering and cuts out very briefly and they comes back up and so on. I have no use for the amp and just wanted to sell it but was thinking to sell as is even just for parts etc. I’d have to check locally as it’s very heavy as you know so wouldn’t want to post it anywhere. Thanks again
How about Hot tubes going into the cold fast. They crack from thermal shock, then get turned on without vacuum and you get that nice frosty on the bulb. Just another bit to clog up the file cabinet for ya. :) I haven't actually seen such nice breaks. I would have to try to put some led s in them and glue em or something. :)
When you said that it was dropped from a height, the only thing I can think was that it was probably during black sabbath tour a drunk and drugged Ozzie Osbourne threw it out of the Beverly Hills hotel
People don't give you the straight truth, or they don't know because they just managed to score the amp for a couple hundred and didn't want to ask questions. That amp was 100% hit or dropped, or it went from very hot to very cold, very quickly. JJEL34's should take 500 volts all day long, and if they were overheating, the red lettering turns to brown rather quickly. Not the case here, not a tube fault.
Ah yes, the JJ El34's SHOULD be able to take that voltage. I think they're actually rated at 800V BUT... I can assure you they fail repeatedly in Marshall 100W amps. Most amp techs know not to fit JJ standard EL34 to 100W Marshalls. I've seen them flash over right before my eyes! Apparently the JJ EL34B is better and was actually created to solve this problem - which they know about.
I am hearing more and more bad stories with JJ's tubes. "Uncle Doug" and "Brad's guitar garage" have not good things to say about these. I am skipping that brand now.
Hi. A close friend of mine runs ampvalves and sells tens of thousands of JJ. In general they seem very good and very few problems. My own inout is that I would not use standard JJ EL34 in 100W Marshalls. They can;t quite take it and you'll get some failres eventuially. Other than that, they're agood brand.

Those stock marshall powertubes were JJEL34II, and those are a copy of the RFT old tubes, and they are great sounding tubes.
Ah, interesting thanks Rodrigo

Hi I think the JCM900 is supposed to have EL34. I'm pretty sure you can put 5881 in but you would need to rebias. Ideally, though, use EL34.

Good job. Maybe someone put in these JJs without adjusting the bias and they simply overheated.

Yes I use them quite often.
Remember when they had fuses you could actually access from the back panel, and you could bias them from there too penny pinching Marshall
