    The saw blade is already tempered to be springy. As for the plasma cutter taking out the temper, yes a little on the edges where the pattern was cut, but it did not affect the whole body of the blade. Obviously you people do not own a plasma cutter. This is the beauty of this project the material is already tempered to flex which is excellent for the machete, and there is no forging involved or heat treating. Believe me that machete has the proper temper already built in, it is not ruined. Nice job, and great looking machete, I really also liked the handle.

    I have no need for a machete anymore, but the craftsmanship in that handle is pleasing to the eye. I love the brass inserts, I always believed they were there to reduce the vibration through the wooden handle when slashing and to help with the balance.

    Backyard blacksmith here. Or I don't know, been doing it for 6 years, can I call myself something else yet?
    Just wanted to say, those old sawblades make some of the best knives, and they keep a straight razor edge for a long time. I've cut them out like you have, and have forge welded them in softer steel billets to get that keen edge but with a thicker blade. If you can find some that are a bit pitted with a good layer of patina, they make beautiful little blades that have an ancient look about em.
    Great work man, love your vids.

    I just stumbled onto the DiResta vidoes a couple days ago, took me until today to realize there is more than one DiResta making them. I don't have a workshop so doubt I'll ever try one of these projets but it is fascinating to watch these just the same.
    Anyway, I have listened to many TH-cam how-to videos, and the DiResta videos have by far the best narrations! Keep up the good work!

  • @fakiirification
    @fakiirification 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jimmy, look up some info about heat treating hardenable steel. I've seen you make a few bladed tools, and they are beautiful. But the blades will never hold an edge properly without retempering after plasma cutting. hardening and tempering Is not too entirely difficult to do with all the resources you have at your disposal, and you would be left with both a fully functional as well as beautiful tool in the end. Not criticizing at all, just offering a bit of advice, as a fellow tool restorer/repurpose-er. Keep up the art!

    Jimmy, I also have the Beaumont KMG. Just a suggestion here: Remove the metal 2 inch roller on the top of the platen and replace it with a 2 inch contact wheel. Makes for a much better grinding wheel. Second, invest in a 9 inch disk sander (variable speed and reversible) It is so much better when grinding the handles!

    @jimmydiresta - you should try making your own micarta and use that for knife/tool handles. Using the bandsaw to shape it will create super tight patterns if you layer your micarta using different colored materials

      Völundr Frey No use of a right is a stupid decision. Even when that decision seems to affect others negatively(this is not the case in the video, however), excercising ones rights is still an admirable thing on its own. A right not excersised is a right lost

      You can make many things with only the basics.I make filleting knives from modern hardpoint saws(sandvik 244 etc),which have gone blunt.They are easy to cut the outline with a grinder,and then work down with various blades and pads.I use recycled wood for the handles,pins etc,and due to their thin springy construction,they are the ideal thickness,and can be ground very sharp with an oilstone.It's a good way to start

    I have to laugh, for when I took shop class in High School my shop teacher would be livid and yell at anyone that used a drill press without clamping down the piece being drilled because of the chance it could catch on the drill bit and spin around enough it could tear someone's fingers off. He would show us a picture of someone's broken fingers to illustrate.

    Even if the saw was hardened, it's obvious the plasma cutting alone ruined the temper. The blade right now is totally useless.

    I just can't appreciate it without any form of heat treating applied to the blade. That soft spring metal won't hold an edge well, especially after being cut with a plasma cutter. :< It looks nice though.

    • @jeremymartin3482
      @jeremymartin3482 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Machete blades don't need to be sharp, it's good if they are but they don't need to be. And have you ever tried to heat treat a sword, it's not easy!

    • @UberDoyle
      @UberDoyle 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I did once. It snapped in half and I ended up with a really odd knife... I'd pay money to have it back though.

    • @anthonysillato5091
      @anthonysillato5091 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      UberDoyle He dosnt need to heat treat it because he made it from a saw blade. Because he didnt heat or anneal the blade it was still martensitic, or hardened. Judging by the pettina/light rust on the blade and the age of it it is good quality, old school carbon steel, which is the best for blade making.

    • @MrAndrewmcgibbon
      @MrAndrewmcgibbon 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Anthony Sillato He cut the blade out with a plasma cutter. that's about 3000 F on a steel that will start to go soft at about 350F

      +Gilvin Yeah, classic case of looks cool and that's what is important. I remember getting my ass chewed out as a young man learning to sharpen wood axes and rolled over shovels/picks by making them too sharp...had to learn that a razor edge on a heavy cutter is actually counter productive.

    Hey Jimmy,
    Goes without saying that you are a true badass and an experienced craftsman/artist. Not quite sure what all the fuss is about: that old saw is made from QUALITY steel, and is perfect for repurposing into a machete! Aaaaaaaaand the saw is still functional. Anywho, love your stuff, always entertaining, educational, and inspirational. Please keep em comin!
    Ps.....not too many of us "cat men" out there, gotta love the pussy! Go Spike!

      +jimmydiresta A little wobbly, and that's what you want in an old fashioned amazon machete, from one forest loving knife-maker to another, could use a little heat treating, but, nonetheless, lovely machete, love the brass on softwood. Was it pine?

    Oh, man. I NEED that belt sander. I have nowhere to put it, but I could save so much time with that thing. Also, do you have multiple band saws for metal, wood, tight curves, straight lines, or do you just change blades? I love the sheer number of abrasives you end up using in this project. So real. My wife is every bit as confused about my need for dozens of abrasive materials of different types and grades (oh, and clamps-never enough clamps), as I am about her need for skin care products. [try responding-I changed a setting that might have fixed it]

    I know that this machete can cut through some firewood with ease, properly better than a store bought one. I can even see Jason Voorhees using this in a Friday the 13th movie. You did an amazing job, and a sawblade is a good choice for blade material.
