  • **I WENT BACK TO TRASH ISLAND 1 YEAR LATER, YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT CHANGE: • Return to Trash Island... **
Trash Island is now 75 metres (250 foot) bigger than when I visited. And STILL growing.
It was one of the strangest places I've ever been to but it is far from a common site on the earth. Many landfills this size and bigger exist all over the planet as an end-point to our waste... But as eluded to in the video these poisonous and toxic places directly affect the environment in detrimental ways. It seems so crude that the answer to unwanted waste is to bundle it all together and dump it in one spot.
In a rudimental way I think that if companies could find financial value in trash and waste then a cleaner environment would happen rapidly. From small schemes such as returning plastic and glass bottles for cash* to companies creating waste solutions that integrate into the culture of society. Of course there are industrial practices including: electro filter, active carbon and potassium filter, quench, HCl-washer, SO2-washer, bottom ash-grating, etc in existence to harvest the waste for valuable materials but this exists in an industrial capacity and at the very endpoint. Surely there's something that can be done before it gets this far?
*Aware this scheme occurs in other countries but not in UK
